Celebrities Speak :

Anil Biswas ( Music Director )

Ham aas lagaye baitthe hain...                  tum vaada karke bhool gaye...                     ya soorat aake dikha jao...                          ya keh do hamko yaad na kar...

" Mukesh came to me," says Anil Biswas, "wanting to be second Kundanlal Saigal. He had just heard Naushad record in the voice of Saigal, 'jab dil hi toot gaya' for Shahjahan". So he studiedly cast him in the mould of K.L. Saigal through this song. "Having done that, and on proving a hit, I told Mukesh that we had both proved our point that we could do a Saigal. Now we had, I told him, to prove that Mukesh was Mukesh, the genuine product, not just an imitation of Sai- gal. I had myself cast Mukesh in the Saigal format, and now, I myself brought him out of it with 'jeevan sapna toot gaya', even getting him to sing, in his own distinct voice in the same Anokha Pyar, a snatch of 'yaad rakhna chaand taaron is suhani raat ko'." The raag was darbari, year 1945 and the song brought a still relatively unknown Mukesh to the altar of public fame. On his death in 1976, Anil Biswas said that he lost one of his sons.

Noushad ( Music Director )

Dil se mita ulfat ka nishaan...              tujhse hamara pyaar kahan...                pyaar ka naata tod yahin...                    geet adhoora chhod yahin...                  main bhi na gaaun tu bhi na ga...

Was it then Anil Biswas who made Mukesh with "Anokha Pyar"? Biswas certainly put him through his first vocal steps, but then, in the very year in which he claims to have brought Mukesh out of his Saigal trance, Naushad argues that it was he who performed this feat on Dilip Kumar. This is how Naushad argues it came about. Mukesh, says Naushad, had a major drinking problem in his formative years as a singer. "One day," says Naushad, "I caught him drunk during the daytime in Kardar Studios. And I told him: 'Mukeshchand, you've already proved that you can do a Sai- gal. What is it you are now out to prove - that you can out-do Saigal in the matter of drinking too?'" The shot went home. From that point, Mukesh took a firm grip on himself. "He was in tears," says Naushad, "as I offered to demonstrate that he had a voice identifiably his own - that he didn't need to imitate Saigal, or any other singer, to prove his vocal credentials."

Raj Kapoor ( Actor )

Ek Din Bik Jayega Mati Ke Mole.
Jag Mein Rah Jayenge, Pyare Tere Bol.
Duje Ke Hontho Ko Dekar Apne Geet...
Koi Nishani Chod, Phir Duniya Se Gol...
Ek Din Bik Jayega...

There was Mukesh - my soul, my voice, I was a mere body. It was he who sang to the hearts of the people all over the world, not me. Raj Kapoor was an image, just a carcass of flesh and bones. When he died, it was destroyed. I felt, there goes my breath, there goes my soul. I know what went away from me. There was a void, a vacuum and then I had to get over it and go on. This is the price an artist pays.

Long Live Mukesh   -   Long Live His Sangeet.

Lata Mangeshkar ( Co. Singer )

Hothon pe sachchai rahti hai....               jahan dil mein safai rahti hai....                   hum us desh ke washi hain...                   hum us desh ke washi hain....                     jis desh mein ganga bahti hai....

To millions of his fans around the globe Mukesh was a singer of memorable film songs . To me he was much more ! one of the few whose I respected like an elder brother .
In an age when even a little success distorts a person's perspective , Mukesh , despite international fame , was a very humble man . He has left behind him memories of greatness , both as a human being and as a singer .

Singers sincere silent salute .

Asha Bhonsle ( Co. Singer )

Vo subah kabhi to aayegi...                      jab ambar jhoom ke nachega....               jab dharti naghme gayengi....                     vo subah kabhi to aayegi....

I used to like him very much because his Hindi was excellent. It was very clear and his pronuncation was excellent. No one could match that. We are Maharashtrians and I think my Hindi has improved because of him. His voice had a speciality. He never imitated anyone, he was an original. Jaane kahan gaye woh din from Mera Naam Joker is one of his classics. Ram kare aisa ho jaye is also worth remembering.

Mo. Rafi ( Co. Singer )

Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya...

" Once, while Rafi Sahab and Noushad Sahab were discussing a song, They were informed that Mukesh had breathed his last in America. Rafi Sahab was stunned. The only words which he uttered were:" Hai kitna achha gayak, kitna achha insaan, kitna pyaara saathi chala gaya ! "

O. P. Naiyyar ( Music Dir. )
Chal Akela Chal Akela...

Mukesh is a handsome,well dressed,and well educated
man.He has pleasant manners. His style of singing is
distinctive and his own. After hearing him sing "Mein
tho ek kwab hoon"from "Himalay ki god mein" tuned by
Kalyanji and Anandji,I went to a dealer's and
purchased the record. It is my strong belief that no
othersinger can do justice to this song as Mukesh has
done. Moreover, I think it is the best song of 1965,
the best sung, best composed, and best written.

Impression and expression :

One of the classic true stories of musicdom concerns a top-notch classical vocalist, playback singer Mukesh and veteran music director Kalyanji. The singer was leaving the composer's music room after a sitting when the classical luminary entered for a social call. After Mukesh departed, this worthy told Kalyanjibhai, "Look at the irony! What does that man know about classical raag and sur? And he drives a Mercedes and I have to travel by bus!"

Kalyanjibhai beckoned the man to sit next to him and asked him to sing Chandan sa badan chanchal chitwan along with the harmonium. The classical singer sang the line, with excessive murki as per his training.

Kalyanjibhai again explained to him the exact notes. Try as he might, the classical maestro could not get the requisite straight and heart-touching rendition needed for this Saraswatichandra classic. Gently, the composer drove home his point by telling him, Ab aap ko pataa chalaa ke woh Mercedes main kyoon ghoomte hain? (Do you now realise why he drives a Mercedes?)

Mukesh was probably the least classically-accomplished among our master-singers, but he has an amazing 90 per cent success record among his songs. According to industry insiders, even K.L. Saigal, Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar were far from highly-trained.

Music is an art first and a craft last, and emotional expression will always win over attempts at calculated impressions.

Post Re: Mukesh Chand Mathur

An article...

MUKESH : The legend

                         EK DIN BEEK JAYEGA
                         MAATI KE MOL
                         JAG ME RAHE JAYENGE
                         YAARE TERE BOL

Mukesh Chandra Mathur was born on 22nd July, 1923, in a small middle class
family in Delhi. He was interested in acting and singing right from childhood
and was a great fan and admirer of Kundan Lal Saigal.

In spite of the fact that he only studied till the 10th grade (metric exam),
he was able to obtain a good job as an assistant surveyor in the department
of public works, where he worked for seven months.

However fate had other plans for him. His younger brother parmeshwaridas
recalls that in 1940 Mukesh had recorded some non filmi songs in Delhi.

Then, Mukesh like scores of other young people before and after him,
arrived in Bombay with the hope of becoming a movie star. He stayed with
his relative who was the famous actor Motilal.

With Motilal's help, Mukesh got a role as an actor in the film
'Nirdosh' (1941). Then in 1941-42 he acted in the films 'Dukh-Sukh' and
'Aadab Arz'. He also acted in some other films that did not complete.
Years later, he was to act again in the film 'Aah' (1953).

His debut as a singer came in the film 'Nirdosh'. The song was "Dil hi
buja hua ho to...". Then in 1944 he followed with a duet with singer
Kusum for the film 'Us paar'. The song was "Jara boli ri ho...". In
1945 he sang with Khursheed "Badariya baras gayi us paar..." for the
film 'Murti'. By this time he had established a small place for himself
in the hearts of his audience.

Then came an important mile-stone in his life. The year was 1945 and Anil
Biswas asked him to record a song for the film 'Pehli Nazar'. The raag was
darbari and the song "Dil jalta hai to jalne de..."  brought a still
relatively unknown Mukesh to the altar of public fame.

A legend was born and in the coming decades the golden voice of this young
22 year lad would be heard across the entire nation and spread far beyond
its boundaries.

By 1948, the streets of the sub continent were humming with his songs from
Aag, Anokhi Ada, Mela, Veena, Vidha.

In 1949, came another mile-stone in his life. In the studios of the great
actor Prithviraj Kapoor (the father of Raj, Shashi and Shammi Kapoor) there
were two young musicians shanker and Jaikishen. The young Raj Kapoor asked
them to provide music for his own films. Shanker-Jaikishen asked Mukesh to
sing for them and the films 'Aawara' and 'Shree 420' spread the voice of
Mukesh all the way to Russia where in the streets of Moscow you could hear
people singing "Aawara hoon..." and "Mera joota hai japani...".

Raj Kapoor who was a successful commercial film producer knew that the success
of a hindi film was influenced by the quality of it's songs. Besides he also
had a personal interest in music. He would review every tune with Shanker
or Jaikishen and his personal approval was needed before a tune was selected
for final recording. Raj Kapoor was present at the studio during the
recording of all his songs, personally cheering the orchestra. The result
of such dedication can be seen years later when every new generation freshly
discovers the gems that lie embedded on the sound-tracks of such movies as Aah,
Aawara, Barsaat, Shree 420, Anadi, Jis desh me ganga behti hai, sangam, Mera
Naam Joker and many more. With the success of Raj Kapoor was intertwined the
success of Mukesh.

Among the other recent music directors for whom Mukesh sang a good number of
his songs were Laxmikant Payrelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Salil Chowdhury, Usha
Khanna.

S.D. Burman who was a true professional would not typically use a singer if
his voice did not match the actor in the movie. However on occasions when he
needed a singer for a song that was to play in the background he did not
hesitate to turn to Mukesh. Two such occasions are "Chalri sajni ab kya
soche..." and "O Jane wale ho sake to laut ke aana...". from 'Bombai ka Babu'
and 'Bandini'. He also had a Mukesh song in the film 'Barud' and 'Dr Vidha'.

His son R.D. Burman used the voice of Mukesh in the following films,
Challia (new), Chandi Sona, Dharam Karam, Phir Kab Milogi, Hangama, Teesra
Kaun, Raja Rani, Karma, Kati Patang, Mukti, Naukri.

O.P Nayyar amongst all music directors had the lowest personal opinion of
Mukesh. He could not understand the appeal of Mukesh. On one occassion he
experimented with Mukesh when he asked him to sing for the film 'Sambandh'.
As was the custom in those days the songs of the film started playing on
the radio before the film was released. As the song "Chal akela Chal akela.."
was heard, post cards with requests started pouring in at the local radio
stations and the song went on to become a hit. The popularity of this song
surprised O.P. Nayyar. He was not expecting it. This went on to become the
only popular and hit song from 'Sambandh' even when the movie had some other
good songs. Other films in which O.P. Nayyar had a Mukesh song were
Ek Baar Muskurado, Miss Coca Cola.

Another music director was Khaiyyam. The lyrics of Khwaja Ahmed Abbas,
Khaiyyam's music and Mukesh's voice created some master pieces for the film
'Phir Subah Hogi'. Years later Khaiyyam was to bring back the voice of Mukesh
in the film 'Kabhie Kabhie'.

In 1965 he lend his voice for the film 'Choti choti baaten' based upon the
life story of Motilal. This was Motilals last film.

It was the songs that were based on the serious ragas darbari and yaman
that the dard of Mukesh's voice and the power of the raag itself came
together to produce some classic songs. An example would be the song
"Aasoon bhari hai ye jeevan ki rahe...." based on raag yaman.

In 1946 he had married a young gujarati girl Saral. This love marriage
had resulted in two boys, Nitin and Manish, and three girls, Rita, Nalini
and Nimitra.

In 1974 he received a National award for the song "Kahi baar yoon bhi dekha
hai..." sung in the film 'Rajinigandha' and the music director was Salil
Chowdhury.

Two years later on the 27th of August 1976, Mukesh died of a heart attack
in Detroit while on an American tour.

Ten years later in 1986, the citizens of Bombay erected a statue of Mukesh
near his residence where Napansea Road and Warden Road intersect. The
intersection was named Mukesh Chowk.

Today the statue still stands and around it on the street corners, paan shops,
small restaurants, apartments and the general hustle and bustle of Bombay
you can still hear the golden voice floating in the air from those countless
radios and cassette players.

KISI KE AASOON O ME MUSKURAYENGE

Mukesh

No other singer was capable of projecting emotions in their raw, unfurnished state the way he could. His was a voice that could on one hand be deeply melancholic and on the other hand exude a profoundly innocent and mellifluous sweetness.

Mukesh Chand MathurMotilal brought him to Bombay, kept him in his own house and arranged for Pandit Jaganath Prasad to groom him. Mukesh even did a Hindi Film during this period as hero, Nirdosh, 1941 but it flopped.

His first break in films came in 1945 under the baton of Anil Biswas in the film "Pehla Nazar". The raag was Darbari and the song was "Dil jalta hai to jalne de", picturized on Motilal. Though a huge hit, admittedly it sounded as if the young man was just another K.L. Saigal imitator. It was under Naushad with Mela, 1948 and particularly Andaaz, 1949, that Mukesh finally discovered his own style. Andaaz, 1949 was a major triumph for Mukesh.

Mukesh was a favourite of all music directors. He sang for almost all the great and not-so-great music directors of the yesteryears and produced masterpieces for them. But it was his partnership with the duo of Shankar-Jaikishen that produced the maximum number of hits. The inimitable team of Mukesh-Raj Kapoor-SJ-Shailendra-Hasrat Jaipuri were responsible for producing one memorable hit after another for almost two and a half decades starting from Barsaat in 1949. It is said the Mukesh-Raj Kapoor was an alliance made in heaven. The Mukesh-RK combination gave new dimensions to popular Hindi music. It flourished during a period which is often called the Golden Age of Hindi film music and the standards were raised to dizzying heights which were seldom touched before or thereafter. The partnership started with Aag, 1948 where Raj`s feelings of despondency and despair were vividly caught by Mukesh in Ram Ganguly`s composition Zinda hoon is tarah, and ended with R.D. Burman`s Ek din bik jayega in the film Dharam Karam. In its course was an endless list of hits figuring among them being the evergreen songs of Awaara and Shri 420, arguably the two films that brought the greatest international fame and glory to Indian music. From foot-tappers like Mera joota hai Japani, Shree 420 to satires like Kisi ki muskurahaton pe ho nissar, Anadi, from melancholy strains of Jaane Kahan gaye woh din, Mera Naam Joker to songs depicting the truth of life like Woh Subah kabhi to aayegi, Phie subah hogi, the emotions conveyed by the depth and intonation of the voice of this master-singer was unparalleled.

Another music director who utilized Mukesh to the fullest was the great Salil Chowdhury. And it was this mutual admiration for each other`s music that led to evergreen hits like Suhana Safar, Madhumati, Nain Hamare, Annadata, Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye, Anand, Kai baar yun bhi dekha hai, Rajnigandha and of course the unforgettable Zindagi Khwab hai, Jaagte Raho". S.D. Burman was a true professional who would not typically use a singer, however talented he may be, if his voice did not match the situation in the movie. And Dada Burman would often turn only to Mukesh whenever he needed a song to be played in the background. Two such examples are Chal ri sajni and O Jaanewale ho sake to laut ke aana.

Mukesh also teamed up with Khayyam in Phir Subah Hogi. Sahir Ludhianvi`s lucid poetry combined with Khayyam`s scores to produce superb musical masterpieces. It fills one`s heart with hope, aspiration and longing as he listens to a soulful Mukesh in Woh subah kabhi to aayegi. Years later in 1976, few months before the death of the singer, Khayyam brought back the golden voice in Kabhie Kabhie to produce the unforgettable Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hain and Main pal do pal ka shair hoon.

He was not proficient in classical numbers, but it was the innocence of his voice that made simple compositions stand out from the other. It was this simplicity that fills one`s eyes with tears as he listens to Sajanwa behri ho gaye hamar or Jaaoon kahan bata ei dil. O.P. Nayaar, it is said, did not think very highly about him. But even he was stunned by the popularity of his apparently simple composition of Chal akela chal akela. Unparalleled in tragic numbers, Mukesh was equally good in fun songs like Awaara Hoon, Mera joota hai Japani, Dum dum diga diga or Kehta hai Joker.

From Raj Kapoor to Amitabh Bachchan, from "Aag" to "Kabhi Kabhi", Mukesh came full circle. Yet Mukesh himself was never in search of a hero. He was an amazingly humble person, who would sing for any music director or any hero. He had the gift of transforming simple compositions into all-time greats as is seen in Sardar Malik`s Saaranga teri yaad mein.

In 1974, he received the National Award for the Kahin baar yun bhi dekha hai from Rajnigandha. His last song was Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal from Satyam Shivam Sundaram in June 1976. Immediately after on 27th August, 1976, the great singer breathed his last of a sudden heart attack in Detroit, while on a tour of the U.S.

Mukesh could have sing classical song too..

It is 30 years since he passed away, leaving a void in the music world of Bollywood. Yet, Mukesh's mellifluous voice still casts a spell on listeners, emitting the fragrance of romance for some or drowning others in the depths of melancholy.

Mukesh Chand Mathur alias Zoravar Chand, who sang innumerable songs for legendary Bollywood showman Raj Kapoor, passed away Aug 27, 1976, following a cardiac arrest in Detroit, US, where he had gone for a concert.

Raj Kapoor is said to have remarked that "he had lost his soul" in Mukesh's passing away - a testimony to the extremely popular combination of Raj-Mukesh-Shankar Jaikishen (music directors) that produced timeless classics for generations of Hindi film music connoisseurs.

Lata Mangeshkar, living legend of Bollywood playback singing and a close friend of Mukesh, cherishes the moments spent with her Mukesh 'Bhaiyya' (elder brother) even today.

"'Jaane Kahan Gaye Woh Din' ('Mera Naam Joker', 1970) remains my favourite song of Mukesh bhaiyya (brother)," Lata told IANS.

"The reason the song is my favourite is because it perfectly expresses my longing for the yesteryears where singing in films was a totally different thing from what it is today," the 77-year-old Bharat Ratna awardee said.

Indeed, the nightingale's yearning is typical as she shared a very close relationship with Mukesh. She accompanied his son Nitin Mukesh when Mukesh's body was brought back to india from Detroit and still remembers the day of the funeral when almost the entire industry turned out to pay tribute to him.

"I first met him in 1947 and almost immediately struck a chord. He was much senior to me - both in age as well as profession - and yet he insisted on calling me 'didi' (elder sister)," Lata reminisced.

"There was no particular reason for this. Everyone one in my family used to call me didi. So he also took it up. But it's amazing that he never addressed me as 'Lata' till the end," she said.

Mukesh, who along with the versatile Mohammad Rafi and the rebellious Kishore Kumar was considered one among the finest and most popular playback singers of Bollywood, has sung some of the most melodious and evergreen duets with Lata.

The naughty "Dum Bhar Jo Udhar Munh Phere" ("Awara", 1951), the romantic "Jaane Na Nazar" ("Aah", 1953), the effervescent "Dil Tadap Tadap" ("Madumati", 1958), the gloriously patriotic "Aa Ab Laut Laut Chalein" ("Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai", 1960) are just a few of the examples one could quote.

Born on July 22, 1923, in Delhi, the "man with the golden voice" was first noticed by Motilal - a popular actor of his times and a distant relative of Mukesh - when he sang at his sister's wedding.

In the beginning Mukesh was considered more an actor than a singer, thanks to his good looks. Soon he was seen in the 1941 flop "Nirdosh".

He got his first break as a playback singer in "Pehli Nazar" (1945) in which he took people by surprise by almost imitating the legendary singer actor K.L. Saigal - who was in the throes of alcoholism by then - in "Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De" - incidentally picturised on Motilal himself.

"Mukesh bhaiyya was as enamoured by Saigal-saab as we all were. But although he began his career singing in the Saigal style, he soon developed his own identity," Lata noted.

"Mukesh bhaiyya was also proud of the fact that he had met Saigal-saab once. I know for a fact that he (Mukesh) even had for himself a harmonium used by Saigal-saab," she said.

His voice characterised by a slight nasal tone, Mukesh was almost always considered for light and breezy songs, ranging from the happy-go-lucky "Awara Hoon" ("Awara", 1951), the lovelorn "Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai" ("Yehudi", 1958) or the tramp-like "Kisi Ki Muskurahaton Pe Ho Nissar" ("Anari", 1959) and "Mera Joota Hai Japani" ("Shri 420", 1955).

However, when it came to more complex and classically-inclined songs like "Ae Bhai Zara Dekh Ke Chalo" ("Mera Naam Joker", 1970) or a "Dil Ke Jharokhe Mein" ("Brahmachari", 1968), Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey were always the choice.

"The problem is that Mukesh bhaiyya was never tried for complex and classically oriented songs because of stereotyping. It is not that he did not have the capability," Lata observed.

"Classical music-wise, the best trained was Manna-da, who was trained under his own uncle - the legendary K.C. Dey. Rafi-saab also was trained classically. But very few recognised Mukesh bhaiyya for his classical background," she said.

"I cannot say with full authority. But I feel he (Mukesh) could have sung complex songs too if given a chance because I know he used to do regular riyaaz (practise) along with his son Nitin, under a teacher," she noted.

Scores of singers, including son Nitin, tried their luck in the industry by adapting the Mukesh-style of singing but failed to make a mark.

"God blesses only a few with the original talent. The others will remain just that - copies. Mr. (Sudesh) Bhonsle succeed to a certain extent in carving a niche for himself, but that's about it," Lata said.

But for the purists and the connoisseurs today - confounded by a bewildering array of remixes of old classics - nothing less than the original refrains of Mukesh would do.

As Lata said, one can only remember Mukesh and recall his "Jane Kahan Gaye Woh Din" (Where have those days gone?).

Post Re: Mukesh Chand Mathur

''Singing is a beautiful hobby, but a painful profession"—Mukesh

Article by Lata Khubchandani

The date: August 27. The place: Detroit, USA. Mukesh Chand Mathur, or simply Mukesh --as he was known to millions of fans -- breathed his last on this day in 1976. At that time, Mukesh was touring the US with Lata Mangeshkar and others, giving stage performances.

One of 11 children, Mukesh was fond of music right from his childhood. He was discovered by actor Motilal who heard him sing at his sister's baraat. Impressed by the young Mukesh's voice, Motilal invited him to Bombay. That was in 1940.

Motilal looked after the young boy while Mukesh trained under Pt Jagannath Prasad. He started his career with Nirdosh in 1941 in which he sang and acted.

But it was in 1945 that the audience sat up and took note of him-- when he sang Dil jalta hai to jalne de in Pehli Nazar. Mukesh, who worshipped K L Saigal, near perfect take-off on his idol with this song.

There was no looking back after that. The pathos in his voice was eminently suitable for the tragic films which the Indian audience simply loved in those days. In 1948, Naushad Ali got Mukesh to sing Bhoolne wale yaad na aa, in 1949 the same music composer gave him Tu kahe agar, Jhoom jhoom ke naacho aaj, Tute na dil toote na, Hum aaj kahin dil kho baithe for the Dilip Kumar starrer Andaz.

The film was a big hit and Mukesh came to be identified with Kumar, though he had sung for Raj Kapoor in 1948 in Aag. The Raj Kapoor-Mukesh team later created celluloid history as the two became synonymous with each other.

From 1949 onwards, the duo gave us memorable songs such as Chhod gaye baalam, Zinda hoon is tarah, Awara hoon, Raat andheri door savera, Mera naam Raju, Mera joota hai japani. The songs from Mera Naam Joker are also among the all-time favourites of Hindi cinema.

Mukesh was often described as a singer whose range was limited to melancholic numbers. But what one often tends to overlook is the fact that he was equally adept at singing bhajans. Pita maat sahayak, Sur ki gati main kya janoo or Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas are examples of his virtuosity.

In 1946 he met and married a Gujarati girl named Bachchi. Since he was a Mathur Kayasth, there was stiff opposition from her family forcing them to elope. It was Motilal who gave away the bride. Around the same time, Mukesh's career also reached its peak.

Above all, he was a good human being, always concerned for others, always willing to help newcomers, often singing without any fee when the composer couldn't afford him. When he saw that his son Nitin was inclined towards music, he encouraged him. But he also had a word of caution: 'singing is a beautiful hobby, but a painful profession,' Mukesh told him.

He had seen the heartache, the pain, the difficulties and sometimes rejection and knew that it required a kind of dedication that young people may not have. Says Nitin, "I don't claim to have the sort of dedication that he had. He would wake up at 5 in the morning -- even if he had gone to bed just 15 minutes earlier -- and do his riyaz for a couple of hours. Then he'd go for a walk to Hanging Gardens. I think he had befriended every flower in the garden."

Mukesh arrived in the golden era of music. There were songwriters like Shailendra, Kaifi Azmi, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Shakeel Badayuni, composers like Naushad, Khayyam, S D Burman, singers like Mohammad Rafi, Talat Mahmood, Manna Dey.

According to Nitin, Mukesh loved Lata and Geeta Dutt. There were times he started crying when he heard Lata sing. Initially, he used to call her by her name but later he started calling her 'didi.' "When she protested saying he was older, Mukesh replied, 'we all look up to you because of your art and I want everyone to call you 'didi'. He also adored Rafisaab and Kishore Kumar. He was never one to hold back praise for anyone," says the proud son.

Mukesh received the Filmfare award four times -- for Sab kuch seekha humne (Anari), Gangaram ki samajh mein na aaye (Pehchan), Jai bolo beimaan (Beimaan) and Kabhi kabhi (Kabhi Kabhi) -- the last being in 1976, the year he passed away. He had also received the National award the year before.

Nitin recalls his father's generosity. "When we went on tours," says Nitin, "We used to be put up in the best hotels while the accompanying musicians were put up in the less expensive ones. He said since the organisers couldn't put up everyone in expensive suites, it would be easier for us to shift to their hotel. So we used to go and stay with the musicians. He taught us discipline by being disciplined himself."

There were times when Mukesh faced financial adversities, but he never let it affect his children. Nitin narrates an incident. "When I went to college, all my friends had a car, so I wanted a car too. I told my mother and she told papa. He immediately gave me the keys of his own Fiat," he recalls.

Nitin was thrilled about it and used the car for some days, before realising that his father was travelling by bus. "I was upset and told him 'why don't you buy a new car?' And he said, 'I can't afford two cars, and you must have a car, so you use this.' When I protested, he told me 'I'd like you to have a car when you can afford one.' After that the car didn't matter to me," states Nitin.

Mukesh himself wasn't highly educated, so he was keen that his children got good degrees. He sent Nitin to the London School of Economics, but he returned after a while. "When I came back, I must have shattered his dreams and caused him embarrassment, but all he said was, 'yes, I know you want to sing and now I'm sure you'll take it seriously,' " says Nitin.

He was with his father on the tour to the US when Mukesh passed away. "He had a heart problem, but was cheerful throughout the tour. I remember it was raksha bandhan day, we were in Washington and he sent me off to sightsee while he secretly went to visit a doctor. I did not know this, but he needed a bypass surgery. But he had a commitment to the organisers of the tour and took the doctor's permission to sing for this tour," recounts Nitin.

Mukesh asked his son to sing on this tour. Once, after Nitin got a thunderous ovation, there were tears streaming down his face. He told Lata Mangeshkar, "Mujhe lagta hai ki Nitin dal roti kama lega" (I think Nitin will be able to earn his bread and butter).

Says Nitin, "On August 26, we reached Detroit. The next day, we had a show. He got up early and went for a shower but came out panting. I called Lataji and an ambulance took him to the hospital. He was wheeled into the emergency ward and that was the last time I saw him. I brought him back to India on August 30 on the same plane in which he was booked as a passenger."

Mukesh became quite well known after his songs of Andaz. His song " Tu kahe agar" is regarded as his best song from this movie. But there was another song that was not included in the movie and so this song failed to appear in records. But this song " kyun pheri nazar" to my mind would have become the biggest hit of the movie if only it had been included in the movie.
