Has highest opening for Indian film in North America
Christmas has once again brought happy tidings for Aamir Khan. His latest film, "Three Idiots," directed by Rajkumar Hirani, opened in North America to a "phenomenal harvest," grossing over $2.14 million in North America, a press release said.
The film had the highest opening for an Indian film in North America, the release said, and was No. 12 in the Top 15 movies during the Christmas weekend.
The film raked in $1 million in the United Arab Emirates, $700,000 in the United Kingdom, $300,000 in Australia and New Zealand and $310,000 in the rest of the world, the release said.
The film, a big screen adaptation of author Chetan Bhagat's "Five Point Someone," has so far netted $20 million in its opening weekend, worldwide.
"3 Idiots" has surpassed Khan's last Christmas release, "Ghajini," in box office collections. With a growing demand for the movie, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra and distributor Reliance BIG Pictures have decided to add 12 more prints in the U.S. market by Jan. 1.
Reliance Big Pictures has released the film in 2126 screens worldwide including 366 screens overseas the widest release for any Indian film so far, the release said.
The film has also set new records in ticket sales in towns and cities across the world. In just 4 days the film has grossed over an astounding Rs 100 crores worldwide.
According to various news reports, the film continues to draw record crowds and is setting new benchmarks for Bollywood films.
" Response has been overwhelming from all over the world," producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra was quoted in the release.
" Aamir, Raju and I knew from the responses earlier on that people liked the film but this is something else.
"We have got reports from places like Australia that they have reduced `Avatar' shows and increased ours," said Chopra in a statement.
Amit Khanna, Chairman of Reliance Big Entertainment said, "We are privileged to have been associated with 3 idiots and its immensely talented team led by Vinod, Amir and Raju.
"The ramp-up to Rs. 100 crores in 4 days is phenomenal and are confident that the film will continue to blaze new records in the weeks to come"
