'I am being paid very well for Waar Parriwar'

April 22, 2008

After judging a reality danceshow, Urmila Matondkar will host a reality music show, called Waar Parriwar. The show will replace Ambar Dhara.

Waar Parriwar will have families competing with each other. Two members from India's first singing family, Usha and Hridaynath Mangeshkar, will be the resident gurus, who will train the participants. One of the judges will be music composer Ismail Darbar and his wife Ayesha.

Urmila gives Rajul Hegde the details about Waar Parriwar.

What drew you to this show?

To be honest, I never thought of anchoring a show. Anchoring needs a lot of commitment. When I was offered this show, I liked the concept -- that is, music. I don't think there is anyone who cannot relate to music. I have been exposed to different kinds of Marathi and Hindi music, classical music and English songs, since childhood. The idea of different families coming together and performing in a musical atmosphere sounded very interesting.

But I took up this show because of Gajendra Singh. He has established himself with his popularshows.

Does music run in your family?

Yes. My mother's brother is a very good singer. My grandfather took up classical singing lessons and learnt to play the harmonium. Until now, we have bee singing only in parties. Now, it will be on screen. I have taken a daring step and hope the viewers will not run away from me (laughs).

Urmila with the participants of the showIs anchoring tough?

Being a host is about being able to communicate and build up a rapport with the audience. I am who I am today because people have appreciated my work. I don't come from a filmi background. If I have survived for so long, there must be something in me. Let's hope viewers like me as a host.

What will be your level of participation in the show?

As of now, for the first two episodes, there is a script. In the days to come, it will get more personal.

Is it a talent hunt show?

Yes. Whether the participants are professionals is a big question mark. Some of them are singers, who have learned music and some are natural singers. On the whole, they are all very good singers.

You judged the reality show, Jhalak Dhikla Jaa earlier. How was the experience?

It was fantastic! The channel told me that I was the one who was the most complimented. The participants and audience looked up to me. Even Prachi Desai 's [who won Jhalka Dikhla Jaa] mother told me I was very good at the balancing act. And that was quite difficult. I had people of my age in the show. I was in the middle of a very delicate situation, as I couldn't hurt  their egos. I had to say things without being candy-flossy.

One didn't have any written lines there. It is one's own personality that speaks.

You were disappointed with the results of Jhalak Dikhla Jaa.

That was my opinion. I felt Sandya Mridul was very talented and hardworking. But eventually, the audience decides the winner.

Film stars are now making a beeline for television. Any comments?

Everybody is doing their own thing, choosing what interests them. There are different kinds of audiences and they will decide what they want to watch. I cannot speak for others but I enjoyed being on Jhalak. Television is a medium where you connect with viewers instantly.

How will you balance your films and television?

Right now, I am shooting only for Karzzzz.

Waar Parriwar will have 34 episodes and will require my dates for three months only. From August, I will start shooting for films again.

Earlier, you were seen in masala films, but recently, you're doing other kinds of films.

Life becomes interesting when you try different kind of roles. I take up films that I can relate to, and what I am convinced about. I take up roles that I have not portrayed before. [Director] Satish Kaushik feels I should act in commercial films because I am wasting time doing other kinds of films.

How good is the money in reality shows?

Are you asking how much I am being paid for this show? I am being paid very well (laughs).

Waar Parriwar will premiere on April 28. Watch the show on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 pm on Sony Entertainment Television.

TELLY POINTS - Doodh ka dude
Janaki Viswanathan

10 Ka Dum promo, Sony TV Woman yells at milkman for watery milk. Doodhwala gives a long, painful story.. by the way, doodhwala is Salman Khan.

Cut to Khan in a suit. He smugly announces, "Mere saath nahin khela toh kya khela?" Really, now.

Eye to eye ¦ Kuchh Iss Tara, Sony TV 9 pm Guess the Kutumb (hate-turns-to-love) plot works. Long-haired bloke is on the phone, bitching about his wife's best friend. Suddenly, his eyes start watering. "Aargh, it's allergy," he hisses.

Seconds later, long-haired realises he's crying.. because he's actually in love with his biwi's friend. Oho, would someone just get him a haircut. Faaast! Goofy yeh mohabbat ¦ Jaane Tu… Jaane Na teaser, 9XM Empty candle-lit studio. The lights come on and there's a guy standing with his back to the camera. Muscular back, unnaturally still.

Minutes pass. Chirpy girl walks in, humming, Jaane tu… Muscled-backwala turns to look at her with a goofy grin. Guess what? He was posing in front of a cut-out poster. Cute. Woman to woman ¦ Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Star Plus, 3 pm Matriarch's an imposter.. but you know that already. She calls up Vamp to wish her a happy birthday. Then they plot and plot and plot.

Vamp comes up with the most amazingly brilliant mother of all ideas.. in a moment of weakness, imposter mom sighs, "I love you!" Heavens, did you hear what I did? Now that would be the twist of the century. Judge kidding ¦ Waar Parrivar, Sony TV 8 pm Twelve families of three singers each. Hostess Urmila Matondkar makes all the right sounds for every performance. Cut to the ‘live' band.

Hey, that guitarist has been around since the Antakshari days of Annu Kapoor and Durga Jasraj. Still bobs his head up and down the same way.

Cut to judge Ismail Darbar.. nods or shakes his head for every performance. Finally he says, "Tough job for whoever will be the judge." Oops.. who's he then?

Urmila talks about her hefty paycheck for ‘Waar Parivaar’

With Telly stars now receiving star treatment not just from fans, but also from the Bollywood fraternity, looks like our Bollywood superstars have no inhibitions taking a dive in the tube, and Urmila happens to just one of them.

When Urmila was asked for her reasons to host the show‘Waar Parivaar’ the actress was quite candid as she replied, “I can tell you for sure that Sony is paying me a fabulous amount of money.”

Urmila has tried her luck with singing with Asha Bhosle and in fact, she even wore a judge’s hat for ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ and Urmi was seen expressing her opinions to contestants by crooning the songs herself.

The actress shares that singing is in her roots as her grandfather and uncle are both classical singers so hosting the music show on Sony has just given her a chance to reconnect with her ‘Parivaar’.

I was not gaining anything by hosting this boring show

Sneha Pant who hosted the special episode on Wednesday called Waar Parriwar tashan has now been replaced. The ex-VJ Ishita Arun has been roped in to play host. This came as a surprise to many as Sneha had done just six episodes when the axe fell on her.

We called up Gajendra to know the details, “Sneha is a nice girl but she was not able to relate with the audience. Besides I needed a more experienced host so I chose Ishita,” says Gajendra.

We also called up Sneha to know her side of the story. “I was in shock when one day I received a call from the production house saying that you don’t need to come as we are changing the format of the show,” stated Sneha.

“I don’t have any problem with the production house or channel. But this behaviour of Sai Baba production hurts me as it was very unprofessional. Gajendra and I share a good rapport but after my exit from the show he did not even call me once. In fact he made someone else call me saying that they did not want me to shoot hence forth,” she adds.

Do you feel cheated? “Well I do but it’s not entirely their fault. Even I wanted to be on TV. Gajendra was never present at the shoot so when he saw the footage he was unhappy. He kept telling me he wanted this or that to be changed but never helped me. I was not gaining anything by hosting this boring show,” thunders Sneha.

So you say you have gained nothing from this show? “I gained nothing but lost so many big opportunities. But now as I’m not any more with Waar Parriwar I can concentrate on singing. I’m planning to go for a world tour and if I was still hosting then I would have missed this opportunity. I think what ever happened was for good and I’ve no regrets about anything,” concludes Sneha.

We do hope that Sneha gets to sing a better tune next time.
