A Journey Of An Eight-year-old Boy 'Tahaan'
'Tahaan' - is a fable-like journey of the eponymous eight-year-old boy, whose life revolves around the pursuit to find real purpose in his little world. Tahaan (Purav Bhandara) lives with his grandfather (Victor Banerjee), his mother Haba (Sarika) and older sister Zoya (Sana Shaikh,) in the serene meadows of Kashmir. They all live in the hope that someday Tahaan's father, who's been missing for over three years, will return.
The death of his grandfather leads the local moneylender Lalaji and his manager Kuka (Rahul Khanna) to take away the assets of the family, including their pet donkey Birbal, against repayment of a pending loan. Now, life for Tahaan is his pastures. For Tahaan, bringing his favourite donkey Birbal back home becomes the sole purpose in life.
After various efforts at money-making, Tahaan approaches Lalaji with the prospect of regaining his lost asset but is devastated to learn that an old man Subhan Darr (Anupam Kher) has bought Birbal and taken him across the mountains... the same mountains from where Tahaan's father never returned.
But Tahaan sums up courage and chases after Subhan. The prophetic old man doesn't befriend Tahaan at first sight but slowly warms up to this energetic and determined soul whose love for Birbal is paramount. But at the end of the journey, Tahaan is further disheartened when Subhan gifts Birbal to his orphaned eight-year-old nephew, and even the long-time helper of Subhan called Zafar (Rahul Bose), cannot be of any assistance to poor Tahaan. On his way back home, Tahaan finally encounters a teenage lad ldrees, who convinces him that his efforts would never be sufficient to get Birbal back. Instead, he promises to get Birbal back for a favors. All Tahaan will have to do is carry a package across the mountains on his next journey. Seeing Tahaan's eagerness, ldrees hands him a grenade. He tells him that when the time is right he will be told what is to be done.
Tahaan sets off on his second journey with Subhan and Zafar, the grenade and package tucked away under Birbal's saddle. What is the price that Tahaan will have to pay for Birbal? And how far will he go to save his only meaning in life?
Tahaan is now at a crossroad where his ultimate decision would determine his fate... "Will he get Birbal back?"

Speaking to the media, one of the two music directors of the film Taufique Qureshi said that a lot of original Kashmiri music has been used in the film. "I have used original Kashmiri music in the film which has been recorded in Kashmir. I have used a lot of instruments like Santoor, Rebab and Tumbaknari and many Kashmiri folk artists have also sung in the film. I have tried improving this music without distorting the original essence and I hope that you will enjoy it," said Qureshi.
National award winning actress Sarika is fascinated by the film's background score who said it was too nice and soothing to hear. “I feel that the background score composed by Taufique in the film is fabulous. It is very Kashmiri and soothing to hear and you don't feel that an orchestra comprising 50 musicians is used to compose the music of the film Tahaan. It is very nice," said Sarika.

'Tahaan' - Bollywood film puts spotlight on life in Kashmir | ‘Tahaan' opened in Indian cinemas on September 5, at a time when Kashmir is beset by some of the biggest protests in two decades against India's rule in the Himalayan region. But when director Santosh Sivan filmed its idyllic vistas in December, Kashmir was enjoying a period of relative calm. | By Tony Tharakan -NEW DELHI |
A new Bollywood film set in Indian Kashmir depicts life in the troubled region through the story of a boy's search for his beloved donkey, a departure from the industry's conflict-based, nationalist approach. ‘Tahaan' opened in Indian cinemas on September 5, at a time when Kashmir is beset by some of the biggest protests in two decades against India's rule in the Himalayan region. But when director Santosh Sivan filmed its idyllic vistas in December, Kashmir was enjoying a period of relative calm. "People joked - any time it will snow now, just like peace. They compare it with that," Sivan told Reuters in an interview. In the past, Bollywood's offerings on Kashmir have generally been populist, patriotic fare which cast neighboring Pakistan and menacing Muslim extremists as the villains, and the Indian security forces as heroes. In contrast, ‘Tahaan' does not directly depict militancy or violence in the region, dealing with these issues from the point of view of its eight-year-old protagonist, Tahaan, who embarks on a quest to bring back his donkey Birbal after it is sold to repay a loan. The boy's journey across the snowy landscape is fraught with danger, including an encounter with a teenager who promises to help him get the donkey - but only if Tahaan carries a grenade and a package to the other side of the mountains. "You are really not trying to glorify violence or graphically show it for a thrill. It is seen through this kid's viewpoint," Sivan said. Sivan has fond memories of the shoot in Kashmir and the local villagers who were eager to be part of the film - working for the crew or acting as extras. Many Kashmiris, weary of fighting and bombs, were happy to see cameras rolling again in the region. "All the women and children would come and look at what's happening - smiling, cheering, pointing out, discovering things," Sivan said. "The ambience was pretty much there, at the same time we also had very good security." Perhaps the biggest worry was not of a bomb attack - but where to find a donkey for the role of Birbal. The crew found it hard to procure a donkey in a region where mules are plentiful. They did find one eventually, but only after a trek to a distant village. For now, Sivan has no plans to shoot another film in Kashmir and is gearing up for a project with Hollywood actor John Malkovich. But he does not see this year's troubles as a reason to shun the region. "I don't think I'll be afraid to go there. I feel I can go back any time. I have lots of people who are friends there."

Re: A Journey Of An Eight-year-old Boy 'Tahaan'
'Zero Bridge' - Frank film looks at daily life in troubled Kashmir | By Mike Collett-White -VENICE A new film set in Indian Kashmir seeks to go beyond stereotypes of the troubled region as either the idyllic backdrop to Bollywood movies or the subject of news reports and documentaries into the violence. ‘Zero Bridge', by U.S.-born Tariq Tapa in his directorial debut, is a low-key, partly-improvised drama about a rebellious Kashmiri teenager who turns to petty crime in Srinagar, the summer capital of the Indian part of the divided region. Dilawar, who lives with an illiterate uncle after his mother abandoned him, meets an attractive older woman Bani, and is faced with a dilemma when he realizes that in stealing her passport he has jeopardized her freedom and future happiness. The film maker, whose father is a Kashmiri Muslim, believes that in portraying the day-today challenges and frustrations of people living in Srinagar, his film could prove more political than any documentary or news bulletin. "If you could come to care about them by the end of the film then I think that that was in a way a more political act than (what) a wellmeaning documentary could achieve," Tapa told reporters on August 30 in Venice, where ‘Zero Bridge' screened outside the main film festival competition. "You are just humanizing people who for so long have been marginalized to an issue or to an exotic location." Both India and Pakistan claim Kashmir in full but rule in parts, and two of three wars between them were sparked by the dispute. Tens of thousands have also been killed there since armed revolt against New Delhi's rule broke out in 1989. India accuses Pakistan of sponsoring militant groups based in Pakistan fighting for Muslimmajority Kashmir's independence or merger with Pakistan. Pakistan denies the charge, but says it provides moral support for groups it sees as "freedom fighters". This month has seen some of the largest pro independence demonstrations in Kashmir in almost 20 years, and although ‘Zero Bridge' does not directly portray any unrest, it shows how years of violence and poverty can affect the local population. Security is intrusive, the wheels of justice turn painfully slowly and many young people dream of leaving Kashmir for a better life. The film also addresses the issue of how many unmarried women are denied basic rights by their families. "The violence is what makes the headlines, but most people's daily lives have to do with being frustrated and terribly inconvenienced to the point that it just wears on them," Tapa said. "They come to expect as a matter of routine that they are going to be detained." His own experiences shooting ‘Zero Bridge' in 2006 and 2007 reflect the level of suspicion in Kashmir. One of the offices he set up in Srinagar during the making of the film was attacked by an angry mob, incensed when they heard rumors that a foreigner was making a pornographic film. He fled one attack on the back of a stranger's motorcycle, and was later detained by police investigating the claims about his project. Tapa spent weeks trying to iron out the misunderstandings. The director, who first visited Kashmir as a boy when his father took him to see relatives there before the visits stopped in 1989, cast his cousin in the main role of Dilawar and based Bani's tragic tale on another relative's real experiences. |

Re: A Journey Of An Eight-year-old Boy 'Tahaan'
New Delhi, September 03, 2008 Actress Sarika plays the mother of an eight-year-old boy in the troubled Kashmir Valley in her forthcoming film Tahaan and she says that it highlights how conflicts impact children's minds and their lives. Directed by Santosh Sivan, the movie is set in Kashmir and narrates the story of the young boy Tahaan and his quest across the mountains to find his donkey friend Birbal. "It is a very simple script like Santosh Sivan's earlier works Malli and Halo. It's a very happy film but at the same time it is very scary because it is a reality that whatever conflicts happen in life it affects children. You only realise it later. We are also addressing an issue with the film," Sarika told IANS in an interview. Talking about her role in Tahaan, she said: "My role is that of a half-widow who is waiting for her husband to come back. She is sad, but she doesn't show. She has a child who goes to school and he has a donkey. The story is actually about the little boy and his (donkey) friend Birbal. Contrary to the current unrest in Jammu and Kashmir that was sparked by the allotment and subsequent revocation of 40 hectares of land to the Amarnath shrine board, Sarika revealed that they didn't face any troubles while shooting in the valley. "We were a very small unit of around 20 members and the people there are very cooperative. The womenfolk in Kashmir are amazing," said Sarika, who was here to promote the film that releases Friday. The actress made her comeback to films in 2006 with an issue-related film called Sacred Evil. She was then seen in Parzania based on the Gujarat riots of 2002 that won her a National Award for Best Actress. "I kept away from the arc lights because I didn't feel like doing films," said the actress who has also featured in films like Manorama Six Feet Under and Bheja Fry. Asked if she had a special inclination towards issue-based films, Sarika said: "I don't get attracted to subjects that are issue-based. My career is not going to be issue-based. It is the script that attracts me. "It has to be an intelligent script and if the script works, a film works and when a film works, the actors work. After all I also have a duty towards the audience to inform them." During her sabbatical from the big screen, Sarika was involved in costume and sound designing for films. She bagged the National Film Award for Best Costume Design for her ex-husband's historical film Hey Ram in 2000. The actress, however, says going back to designing is a complete no-no. "I had designed costumes for 37 films, but now there's no way I'm doing it as you have to meet a lot of individual demands. I've also done some sound designing for a few films and if ever I do anything in designing again, I might do some sound work apart from films if I feel like but no costume designing," she said. Sarika will next be seen in Hari Puttar, Kacha Limbu and Shoebite and she admits that she likes working with children. "I love working with kids. But the kids must be disciplined. In fact, I am playing the role of a mother in three films." Sarika also thinks that it is high time that children are given their due share of recognition in films. "I think that by virtue of age we do not recognise children as co-stars but as child actors. A co-star is always a co-star no matter what the age," she asserted. Sarika's daughter Shruti Haasan is making her acting debut opposite R. Madhavan in Nishikant Kamat's yet-to-be-titled film, but Sarika refused to talk about it. "Ask me only about my films and co-stars. I'm here to promote my film Tahaan," she said.

Re: A Journey Of An Eight-year-old Boy 'Tahaan'
Bollywood director Santosh Sivan is ready with his new directorial venture Tahaan, a fable about an eight-year-old boy and his donkey. Speaking to the media Sivan said that he thought of making this film after reading a report in a newspaper. “I thought of making it (the newspaper report) into a film but may be making it into a way that it's like a fable with morals and things like that but unlike moral it has a lot of surprises. But basically it’s about a journey of a boy who goes to find his donkey back and through his journey he meet all these interesting characters and it’s a very big tussle for the boy to go and get his donkey back. So during this event there are so many things that happen,” said Sivan. On being asked why did he choose Kashmir as the backdrop, Sivan said, “It’s (the setting of the film) about something that you can relate to because it is a place like Kashmir which is always in the news for conflict and in today’s world people relate to such things all over the world. So it has a universal appeal too.” The film that is produced under the banner of 'I Dream Productions' has been extensively shot at picturesque town Pahalgaam in Jammu and Kashmir. It stars Purav Bhandare, Rahul Bose, Anupam Kher, Sarika, Victor Banerjee and Rahul Khanna. Award winning director Sivan is best known for films Asoka, The Terrorist and Before the Rains. Tahaan is a fable-like journey of the eponymous eight-year-old boy, whose life revolves around the pursuit to find real purpose in his little world. The film is slated for September 5 release.
