Freida Pinto

Slumdog Millionaire star Freida Pinto is now being feted as a modern 'Helen of Troy' by Vanity Fair magazine, which is conducting a poll to find the world's most beautiful woman.

The magazine has given out a list of 19 names, out of which one will be adjudged the world's most beautiful woman. Although names of Hollywood superstars like Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman are missing, Freida has found a place on the list.

'Of the billions of women on this planet, only 19, we believe, could start wars. These modern-day Helens of Troy come from both hemispheres and include legends and ingenues,' said the magazine.

Check out the other contenders for the title.

Hollywood music composers Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore and Danny Elfman have been impressed by the score Rahman has composed. They made some genuinely warm comments about Rahman's music.

Freida Pinto

Freida Pinto (born October 18, 1984) is an Indian actress and professional model, best known for her performance as Latika in her debut film Slumdog Millionaire, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2009. Pinto won a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Freida Pinto was born in Mumbai to Sylvia Pinto, a principal of St. John’s Universal High School (Goregaon), and Frederick Pinto, a senior branch manager at the Bank of Baroda. Freida Pinto's father is from Neerude and mother from Derebail, both towns in Mangalore. Her elder sister Sharon Pinto is an associate producer on the NDTV news channel.

Pinto studied at Carmel of St. Joseph School in Malad and completed her Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Literature from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. She currently resides in Malad, a suburb of Mumbai.

She is also trained in different forms of Indian classical dance as well as Salsa.

In an interview, Pinto stated that although she is "completely pure Indian", some of her ancestors were probably from Portuguese background, which explains the origin of her surname Pinto.

Before starring in Slumdog Millionaire, Pinto anchored the international travel show, Full Circle on Zee International Asia Pacific in English between 2006-08. Pinto was also featured in several television and print advertisements for products such as Wrigley's Chewing Gum, Škoda, Vodafone India, Airtel, and DeBeers. Pinto modeled for four years and appeared in runway shows and magazine covers. She learned acting from The Barry John's Acting Studio in Andheri and was trained by her mentor Barry John. After six months of auditions, she received a call to audition for Slumdog Millionaire. Pinto auditioned for Danny Boyle and was short-listed and finally selected to star in Slumdog Millionaire.

Pinto made her film debut in 2008. Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on a game show and exceeds people's expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials. In the movie, Pinto played the role of Latika, the girl with whom Jamal (Dev Patel) is in love. At the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, the movie won the Cadillac People's Choice Award. At the 2009 Golden Globe Awards, the movie won four awards. Pinto herself was nominated for "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" at the 2009 BAFTA Awards, and won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture alongside ten other cast members from Slumdog Millionaire.
Pinto has been cast in Woody Allen's next film set in London. Other cast members include Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Naomi Watts, and Nicole Kidman. Shooting for the film starts in July 2009.

Freida Pinto threatens Gwyneth Paltrow

Oscar winning actor Gwyneth Paltrow is scared that “Slumdog Millionaire” actor Freida Pinto will steal her 1 million pounds-a-year contract with Estee Lauder.

fpinto

Paltrow replaced Elizabeth Hurley in 2005 as the younger and fresher face of Estee Lauder cosmetics. She is now afraid that Pinto will upstage her, reports dailymail.co.uk.

A source said: “Gwyneth makes millions through her sponsorship deals and it’s her commercial work that’s keeping her rich. The news that Estee Lauder is in talks with Freida caught her by complete surprise. Losing the Estee Lauder deal would be a huge blow to Gwyneth. She’s waiting for an exact outline of what Freida will be doing for the brand and hoping she won’t be sidelined

Catapulted to stardom by the box office success and Oscar sweep of Slumdog Millionaire, Freida Pinto has become a known name and face worldwide. Meanwhile, particularly in Spain, where Freida has appeared in a few magazines, she is reportedly being mistaken by movie buffs as a Spaniard.

But the fact remains she is our own Mumbai girl.

Sexy necklines this summer

Freida Pinto

Before Slumdog Millionaire, Freida Pinto was a nobody. Now, the girl is capturing everybody's attention. It helps too that she has a unique sense of style.

Walking the red carpet with Freida Pinto
May 18, 2009 |

Ashvin Kumar, son of noted fashion designer Ritu Kumar, turned feature film director with The Forest. Based on saving nature, the film has been showcased at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. His earlier short film The Terrorist bagged an Oscar nomination.

Ashvin, seen here with Manisha Koirala and mom Ritu Kumar, writes in his experiences at Cannes.

Our apartment looks out to the Cot D' Azure the brilliant blue Mediterranean sea, with huge luxury yachts floating all over it. I love the weather in Cannes! It's great to be back here after an absence of two years. And we have a film in the market -- even better!

It's my parents' first time in Cannes. They were going to be in Europe this week so have come down to check out what it is that I do. A day was spent showing them around, they look stunned. I think they're really soaking in the festive atmosphere and are already talking about coming back next year. It's a good idea, if we get a whole possy of people we can rent a villa outside somewhere and make a week of it.

We went to meet our distributors Non Stop Sales, on the Scandanavian Terrace, where I am poaching their internet connection and writing this from. The India pavilion was inaugurated yesterday. Abhishek Bachchan, Manisha Koirala, Deepti Naval, Bobby and Versha Bedi, Mr Hinduja, Tannishtha Chatterjee attended.

I ran from that to the screening of The Forest. A good attendance. And this morning I was given the good news that we've sold the film to four countries already. It's a great beginning to a Cannes in recession! We're going to announce those sales to the trades here in Cannes (Variety/Screen International) and expect there to be more interest in the film for the second screening.

I got tickets to the red carpet for this evenings film -- kicking around Cannes for four years helps in knowing where to procure these things. We dressed up in bandhgallas and I found myself walking with Freida Pinto. Mom and she got into a conversation and I became the tourist on the red-carpet taking pictures. Her costumes for Slumdog Millionaire are from the Ritu Kumar Label line, and they spoke about that and her new wardrobe.

A wonderful meal followed, fillet minion, meat that good should be eaten every night. And a fabulous bottle of Provencal red. Following that a volley of parties. First the Marche du film party on the Miramar beach, where I met my friend Gueido, a distributor from Argentina. A real eccentric. The party was thinning out by the time we got there. But the Champagne was great. Then a place called Bauli (not in Haryana) where we met up with Manisha Koirala and some friends. Went mental on the dance floor, and called it a night around 2 am -- from which I am still suffering as I write this.

All in all a great start to Cannes.
