Post A Well-known Voice Ishmeet Singh (1989 - 2008)

Ishmeet Singh (1989 - 2008) was a well-known Voice of India contestant and playback singer.. He died on 29 July 2008.

Ludhiana, November 24

What a culmination to Gurpurab celebrations! Ishmeet Singh was crowned the Voice of India tonight. The daylong celebrations, full of kirtan and langar, ended with high-pitch music, dance and crackers bursting all around — marking the victory of Ishmeet.

While the televised show was almost an hour-and-a-half late in announcing the results, Ishmeet’s friends and family present at the Mumbai grand finale sent SMSes back home at 10 pm announcing his victory.

Ishmeet Singh, a second year student, who handled the flak coming from the judges, showed his mettle as he proceeded towards the finals. In his last visit to the city, just before the finals, Ishmeet had promised: “I will surprise every one with my choice of songs and I am sure even the judges will praise me. I am going to sing A R Rehman.”

All through the grand finale, Ishmeet, dressed in a golden coat followed by a white formal suit, maintained his confidence. Ishmeet came to the fore during the pre-finals held at Ludhiana.

Jubilant Dr Charan Kamal Singh and Raminder Kaur, uncle and aunt of Ishmeet, said: “We never even for once felt that he would not win. Ishmeet is already all over the world. So many companies want him to be their brand ambassador and all these offers came before the title. Now that he has the title, it is even better.”

Harminder Singh, Ishmeet’s fan, said, “This is our victory. It is the victory of the Punjabis. Ishmeet had proved his talent by singing flawlessly.”

November 22, 2007

Meet Ishmeet Singh, a talented young man from Ludhiana, Punjab, who gave up his studies, went against his parent's wishes and took a huge risk to follow his dreams.

And lucky for Ishmeet, the risk paid off. From thousands and thousands of hopeful singers, Ishmeet stands apart as one of the two finalists of the television reality show, Star's Voice of India.

Barely two days away from the grand finale, Ishmeet spends most of his time in riaaz. But he took some time out to speak to us about about his journey so far.

Tell us about yourself.

I come from a simple middle class background. There's my mother, dad and my elder sister, Sumeet.

Everyone sings in my family. My dad is a great singer, so are my chachaji and his children. So I have been singing from very young. But it was in my ninth class that I really got into singing Hindi songs.

When did you realise that singing was your passion?

In my ninth class, every student was asked to sing a song. When I sang, my teacher, Jagdeet Kaur, told me that I have a very good voice. She told me that I would go very far because of my singing.

Are you a trained singer?

I've had basic training. I've learned a lot from my dad. I learned singing Hindi songs from him.

How did you enter VOI? Tell us about your auditions.

I saw it on television. I learnt that they were holding auditions for the new season of Voice of India and I wanted to try out for it. But my family was against it. They wanted me to complete my studies. I couldn't do both, as my studies take up all my time. So I had to reason with my mother to let me at least go for the audition. She told me that even if I was selected, I couldn't continue because my studies were very important.

I auditioned in Delhi and was selected. From thousands of hopefuls, only 39 were selected. Then it was down to 33 and finally 12. But still my mother was asking me to give it up and return home.

I requested her to just let me try, dekhte hain kaha tak pahuch sakhta hoon (see how far I could go). In the end, my relatives had to intervene and convince my parents.

Now that you've reached the finals, you're already a big star. What do they feel now?

They're very proud of me. So is everybody else. I have made a name for myself and my family. Because of this show and what I've achieved, we have moved up from a simple middle class life to a very respectable standard. The kind of people I'm meeting, and the life I'm leading right now is only because of this show.

What is the source of inspiration for your music?

Initially, it was just my dad. He taught me everything. Then I started following Mohammad Rafiji. I'm big fan of Shaan and Sonu Nigam [Images]; I follow their singing very closely.

Do you get nervous before every performance? Do you have any ritual that you do to calm yourself down?

Earlier, I would get very nervous. But now, I have got used to performing in front of an audience. But no matter what, before every performance, I chant Wahe Guru on my Simone Mala; it's the beaded mala that I always wear on my wrist.

What is the hardest part about this competition?

Singing is the easy part. Impressing the audience is difficult. In the end, it all comes down to them.

What has been the most memorable moment for you up till now?

Every moment, every day has been memorable. Since the day this experience has started, every moment has been so special. It has changed my life, and for the better.

There are eliminations in every round. Was there a point when you thought, 'I'm next to go'?

Oh yes, every time! You can do your best, put everything into your performance, but after that, it's no longer in your hands. It's up to the audience and their votes.

You're up against Harshat in the finals. What is your take on him?

Harshat is very talented. Bahoot achcha gata hain (he sings very well). You know, we both have come so far. Coming so far in the competition is a great achievement in itself. It doesn't matter who is voted the final winner. If one wins and the other is voted second, it doesn't mean he is the loser. We've come so far -- there's nothing to lose anymore. We are both winners.

Is singing something you want to do for the rest of your life?

I will go back to studies first. It's what my parents want from me. But yes, I also want to continue singing. People know me because of my voice. I have made a name because of my singing so I don't think I'm going to give it up.

Ishmeet Singh

The 2007 winner of Star Voice of India is a big fan of Shaan, and is enjoying his time on the new show.

"I liked the concept of the show and am enjoying it with my new friends," he says, adding, "Everything is unexpected. You may get good comments but you still face the danger zone because of SMS voting. So, yes, the results depend on the viewers' votes."

Meanwhile, the singer is very excited about his first album. "It will be out in July with different kind of songs -- hip hop, bhangra and remixes. My devotional album Gurbani -- Satgur Tumre Kaaj Saware has got good response in India as well as abroad," he adds.

The brand ambassador for the Punjab State Lottery is also excited about his movie career. "I will be acting and singing in two Punjabi films after this show. I'm also in talks with two Bollywood directors for playback singing. As far as singing in concerned, I don't mind singing in any language. After this show, I will go on a world tour with Voice of India participants Rakhi Sawant and Shaanbhaiya."

Ishmeet Singh, winner of Star Voice of India of 2007 was found dead on Tuesday evening. He had drowned in a swimming pool at a hotel in the Maldives. Ishmeet was 19 years old and was said to have a very bright future. He had gone to the Maldives for a concert.

Ishmeet was one of the most talented guys in the Voice of India contest on Star Plus and defeated Harshit Saxena from Lucknow in the finals. After his win, he was in the process of recording his own album and had only recently recorded a song under the guidance of music director Lalit Pandit (of Jatin-Lalit fame). Ishmeet was a talented singer from Ludhiana, who had given up his studies and gone against his parents wishes to participate in the Voice of India contest.

Lalit Pandit, one of the judges in the Voice of India contest, says, "It is extremely sad as apart from being a very talented singer, he was also an extremely nice and caring boy. He was just in the process of recording with his album. Alka Yagnikji gave me the bad news just now, and it has shaken me completely. He was hardly only 19 years old."

Reminiscing about the show, Voice of India, Pandit adds, "I have Ishmeet's family as well and they are very nice people. His sister used to come on the show regularly. Both of them used to come to my house regularly for guidance. I still remember how he sang my songs like `Mujhe raat din' (Sangarsh) and `Chand sifarish jo karta' (Fanaa). He was brilliant and all his notes were in place. He had a brilliant future and it's extremely sad. I pray to God to give strength to his family in their moment of grief."

Sr creative director, Star, Anupama Mandloi, says, "We are all shocked at this news.  We don't have complete information yet as we too are getting all the details in bits and pieces. All we know is that he has drowned accidentally in a swimming pool. He was there for a concert along with couple of others like Vyom of Chote Ustad and Arunima who was also a part of Voice of India. He died before the concert. We are in the process of getting rest of the details."

Mandloi further says, "I have just spoken to his father and obviously they are completely distraught over the completely unexpected and unfortunate incident."

Prime Minister 'shocked' by Ishmeet's death

July 30, 2008

Ishmeet Singh

The news of Voice of India 2007 winner Ishmeet Singh's tragic death was greeted with shock and disbelief on Wednesday.

Among those who could not believe that the 19-year old singer drowned in a swimming pool in the Maldives was Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was shocked and saddened by the news. ''Dr Singh shares the grief of his parents and fans,'' a PMO spokesman said.

The music industry also could not get over the fact that the budding singer was no more. The Ludhiana-based singer was on a promotional tour to promote a music label with which he had signed a contract when he met with the fatal accident.

'Ishmeet was like a child to me and I can't still believe that he is no longer with us. I feel choked thinking about it and am trying hard to overcome my grief,' Radioandmusic.com quoted a stunned Gajendra Singh, who produced Star Voice of India.

'We have been together for almost two years now and have shared the same room as a part of the show. Although we were the final contenders in VOI, there was no sense of competition and we were like brothers. I remember him as a guy who used to love net surfing and ate a lot of pizzas!' the website quoted Harsh*t Saxena, who was the second runner-up in Voice of India, as saying. Both Harsh*t and Ishmeet were also a part of the recently concluded reality show, Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar.

Another contestant of Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, Himani Kapoor recalled Ishmeet as 'a reserved and humble guy, who had a smile on his face, come what may.'

Shaan speaks on Ishmeet

Singer Shaan, who hosted the first season of Voice Of India had met Ishmeet in Kolkata 15 days prior to his untimely demise. Shaan says that Ishmeet was an amazing personal who will be sorely missed.

Shaan%20&%20Ishmeet%20Singh

He says, “He had that spark in him. He was a very well balanced person with no attitude problems. He was very jovial, had a good sense of humour and never took things the wrong way, even though the judges on the show and the media didn’t always favour him. He respected the judges even if they were harsh on him.”

Shaan recalls how Ishmeet had promised to try his hand on classical music. Shaan reveals, “Ishmeet promised me that after the finale he would try to sing semi-classical songs and he kept to his promise. He wanted to settle down in Mumbai, take authentic training lessons and also take up some computer courses. His voice was magical and he was a very positive person.”

Shaan recalls their last meeting. He says, “We met in Kolkatta for the second season of Voice Of India. I had asked Ishmeet to give us his VOI trophy as we wanted to keep that on one of the tables as a central part of the show. But Ishmeet wanted to hold on to the trophy and said that there was still a lot of time till the new winner was announced. For him we cancelled our plan to highlight the trophy. I also recall how excited he was to meet Sonu Nigam!”

About Ishmeet’s sad demise Shaan says, “Even I do not know how to swim and nowadays in all resorts you will find 50% of people in a pool who do not know anything about swimming but still swim in pool and sea. He was never careless or brash but in Maldives it is always thrill to go in to water. It was matter of destiny.”

Shaan however is quick to dismiss that any foul play took place. He says, “Some people are saying that it was conspiracy and someone wanted to kill him but this is wrong, He never misbehaved so why would anyone have any personal problems with him. Let the man’s soul rest in peace.”

Voice of India 2007, died in Maldives

Ishmeet Singh, winner of the popular Star Plus reality show Voice of India 2007, died in Maldives on Tuesday evening. He drowned in the swimming pool of his hotel Chaaya Island Dhonveli in North Male.

The 19-year-old singer from Punjab had arrived at Male on the morning of June 29, to perform at a promotional event to be held on August 1.

It may be recalled that Ishmeet was among the top two finalists on Amul Star Voice of India and was crowned the winner on November 24, 2007, beating Harsh*t Saxena. He was also one of the contestants of Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, a singing reality show on Star Plus and represented the Champions team. He was eliminated on June 20, 2008.

Lata Mangeshkar, whom Ishmeet and Harsh*t had met as contestants and who gave away the winner's trophy, recalled Ishmeet as a sweet fellow. She said, "I feel very sad. He'd come to meet me, sang for me, and I had nudged him to pay a little more attention to classical training. He'd told me, 'Mein ek din aapko bahot bada ban ke dikhaoonga' (one day I'll make a big name for myself)," Lata told a TV channel.

Farah Khan, judge on Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar , said, "He was a gentleman, never saying anything bad about any contestant. Once I was having a late dinner in the studio and he sat beside me, sharing my food. He told me, 'You have so many fans. I'd never thought I would one day eat sitting side by side with you.' I still can't believe he's dead."

Playback singers Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik, who are also judges on music reality shows, have expressed shock at Ishmeet's death. "It's shocking. It's a cruel thing that has happened to him. I still can't believe it," said Yagnik.

Ishmeet's mother sadly recalled that she wanted her 'Bablu beta' to become a CA. She also informed that he used to hate water as a kid.

Harsh*t Saxena, Amul Star Voice of India runner up, said, "He was like a brother to me. I cannot even comment on what has happened. I cannot believe that he is no longer with us."

Meanwhile, it was reported in Star News late in the evening that all Sikh schools in Delhi would remain closed on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 in the wake of the unfortunate incident.

Obituary - Singer, Ishmeet Singh, ‘Voice of India', 19, dies
LUDHIANA/MALE

Singing sensation Ishmeet Singh's body was consigned to the flames in Ludhiana on July 31 as tens of thousands of mourners braved a stampede-like situation to bid farewell to the ‘Voice of India' whose journey to stardom was cut short by a mysterious death.

Even as Bollywood celebrities like Abhijeet, Mika and Shreya Ghoshal descended to Ludhiana to pay their last respects to the 19-year-old singer, who many predicted had the makings of a star crooner, commoners also turned up in force, virtually bringing this industrial city to a standstill.

As the singer's body made its way to the cremation grounds, security personnel and close relatives had to appeal to the crowds with folded hands to give way.

The singer, who drowned in a swimming pool in the Maldives on July 29, had become so popular in just a few months that his funeral was televised live by some TV news channels.

Many noted that his face looked as composed as it used to be when he was on stage in the midst of tight situations during the ‘Voice of India' reality contest last year.

When singer Abhijeet embraced a shattered Gurpinder Singh, Ishmeet's father, there was hardly an eye that did not glisten with tears. The pyre was lit by Gurpinder Singh amidst the Sikh religious cry ‘Bole so nihal Sat Sri Akal'and shouts of Ishmeet Amar Rahe (Long live Ishmeet).

Gajendra Singh, the man behind most of the successful realities shows on Indian TV, includ ing ‘Voice of India', popular Punjabi singers Hans Raj Hans and Harbhajan Mann, Ishmeet's co-contestants and several others also turned up for the cremation.

Earlier, as the body made its last journey from his home to the cremation ground on July 27, commoners and celebrities turned up in force to bid a tearful farewell to the ‘Voice of India' singing contest winner organized by STAR TV.

Mystery still surrounds his death in the swimming pool at a Maldives hotel, but that he was much loved was evident from the presence of thousands of mourners, among them Bollywood singers and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.

Residents of Ludhiana could not help but remember how they had turned out with drums, crackers and sweets to celebrate Singh's ascent as the winner of the ‘Voice of India' show in November that had millions hooked.

Shops in the area remained closed for the second day as a mark of respect to Singh.

Earlier in the morning, as the reality show singer lay in a glass coffin at his modest residence in Male, people known and unknown to him came for a last glimpse of the youth who had risen from among them to become a star.

Ishmeet's family were inconsolable even as scores of mourners kept pouring in. They sat beside his body even as preparations for the last rites were being made amidst religious hymns and chants of ‘Satnam Wahe Guru'.

Doctors at the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana said that preliminary autopsy results showed Singhhad died of drowning on July 29 evening.

"The preliminary cause of Ishmeet Singh's death is drowning. His viscera has been sent to Patiala for further chemical examination. If there is any additional cause of death, it will be declared later," senior medical officer Harvinder Singh told reporters.

The 19-year-old singer had gone to the Maldives for a promotional event with the music company with which he had a contract. Singhleft Mumbai on July 29 morning for the Maldives, where he was to perform on August 1.

Maldives' national newspaper Haveeru quoted officials from the Chaaya Dhonveli Beach Resort as saying that Singh had drowned between 5.15 p.m. and 5.20 p.m. in July 29 in the hotel's swimming pool.

Indo-Asian News Service
Chandigarh, August 22, 2008

Fans of Ishmeet Singh, the 19-year-old singing contest winner who died July 29 in the Maldives, will now be able to hear his only attempt at playback singing with the release of the music album of forthcoming Punjabi movie Sat Sri Akal.

"Ishmeet has sung a shabad (religious song) in the movie. My heart is full of sorrow and sympathy while saying that it is his first and last playback for any film. He was a promising singer with a unique soothing touch in his voice," Arvinderjit Singh, writer of the movie, said here Wednesday at the launch of the album.

Ishmeet, from Punjab's industrial city of Ludhiana, shot into limelight after winning the first Voice of India title in November 2007. His sudden death due to drowning in a swimming pool shocked his fans, thousands of whom turned out for his funeral.

"Ishmeet has done a great job and we consider the shabad sung by him the unique selling proposition (USP) of our movie with its immaculate composition and lyrics," said Arvinderjit Singh, who is also the chief trustee of the Mata Triptaji Charitable Trust, which has co-produced the movie.

"Sat Sri Akal revolves around traditional values, love, sentiments and immense fait in god. It shows the various pilgrimage places like Sri Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar, Sri Bangla Sahib in Delhi and Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded," said Singh.

Another special thing about Sat Sri Akal is that the lead role is played by a turbaned Sikh, Manpreet Singh, which is very rare.

"There is still a long way to go before our cinema accepts a turbaned Sikh as a hero in any movie. There is a widespread perception that Sikh guys are ideally suited only for the roles of a comedian or of a truck driver or a taxi driver," said Manpreet.

The Ishmeet I Knew

August 12, 2008

Shweta Subramanaim

Even two weeks after 19-year old singer, Ishmeet Singh passed away, his friends cannot get over the talented Amul Star Voice of India winner.

Shweta Subramanaim, an Indian Canadian playback singer, who made an appearance in Voice of India, knew Ishmeet closely before he drowned in the Maldives.

She re-lives Ishmeet's memory.

The first time I met Ishmeet, I asked him the meaning of his name. 'Ishwaar ka meet houn -- Ishmeet, aur jo Ishwar ka meet hota hai woh sabka meet hota hain [I'm God's friend and a friend of God is everyone's friend],' he explained. Ironically and sadly, my dear friend Ishmeet is no longer amongst us.Every day I sleep by pacifying myself that he could not have asked for a safer abode than going back to God.Ishmeet was a simple and modest person with huge dreams to become a playback singer. He always told me that he did this for his family and himself.

When I met him during the training sessions at Voice of India, he was very quiet and kept to himself. He was unlike other contestants, who would play pranks and crack jokes. Ishmeet always kept his focus on music. But he cherished his few close friends like Karishma, Bhanu, Priyani and me.

Ishmeet The first song that I remember him singing was Chand Sifarish (Fanaa). He was a huge fan of Shaan, which was evident from the songs he selected for the competition.

I remember how he was feeling unusually low one day. I asked him what was wrong, and he said 'Mummy papa ki bahut yaad aa rahi hai aur mujhe pataa nahi hai ki main is competition mein kahaan tak pahchoonga. [I miss my parents, and I'm not sure how far I will reach in this competition].

He told me that he put his education on hold and rebelled against his parents' wishes to be part of this competition.Becoming an established singer was his dream and music meant everything to him -- winning Voice of India meant everything to him. And he was very determined.

During the finale, the whole country was caught between the singing sensations from Uttar Pradesh [Harshit Saxena] and Punjab.

I remember Ishmeet telling me that his family and the whole of Punjab did everything possible to make sure that he won the title.Voting stalls with huge banners with Ishmeet's photograph were put in front of gurudwaras and even rikshawallahs with a cell phone was encouraged to vote for Ishmeet.

I was keen to see whether fame and adulation would steal the friendship Ishmeet and I shared.Obviously, after winning the title, Ishmeet got swamped with shows and projects and it was almost impossible to get a hold of him.

One fine day I received a call from Ishmeet and his first words were 'Arrey yaar tum doston ko bhool hi jaati ho [You forget your friends].'

That was certainly an ice-breaker. We started talking again, refreshing our Voice of India memories and the way our lives changed since then. As we were talking, I asked Ishmeet where in Mumbai he was staying. To my surprise, he lived in the same complex as me! I still remember that phone call.We couldn't stop laughing about how we had no clue that both of us lived in the same complex and never ran into each other. As soon as we realised how close we were, we ran out of our respective apartments and met up. We had so much to catch up on.

Ishmeet proved his friendship to me in many different ways.I once asked him to sing for a wedding reception and he happily came over. He even posed for photographs with the guests, and signed autographs.

I will always cherish the dinners we had together, the walks along Juhu beach, our endless conversations about his family, his passion for music...He was a gem.

I know the world will miss Ishmeet's warm, down-to-earth, soft-spoken personality.

As told to A Ganesh Nadar

'Rest in peace', friends wish Ishmeet on birthday

Monday, September 01, 2008

NEW DELHI: "Happy Birthday to you! Many girlfriends to you" - one of the many wishes that the winner of "Voice of India" Ishmeet Singh would have got from his friends had he been alive for his 20th birthday Tuesday.

ishmeet"May your soul rest in peace" - is the wish they have for him now.

Ishmeet, who won music reality show "Amul Star Voice of India" in 2007, drowned July 29 in a swimming pool in Maldives where he had gone to perform.

Bhangra pop king Daler Mehndi expressed confidence that had Ishmeet stayed on he would have definitely carved a niche for himself in the competitive Bollywood industry.

"It was very difficult to overcome the sadness of Ishmeet's death. At such a young age, he earned so much name and fame. He became a singing sensation. Despite his Punjabi background, he used to sing any song easily without the Punjabi accent," Mehndi told IANS.

Remembered as a "wonderful", "down-to-earth" and "sincere" person by the Indian music industry, Ishmeet not only went on to become a beacon of light for the Sikh community when he won the contest, he was also a source of inspiration for a horde of young and aspiring singers.

The news of his demise brought sorrow not only to his family, but the entire state of Punjab, his native state. The nation also mourned his death.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal even presented a cheque of Rs.1.1 million, a citation and a shawl to Ishmeet's parents as a mark of honour at a state-level function to mark the country's 62nd Independence Day.

Badal has announced the opening of an international level music academy in Ludhiana in his memory.

Ishmeet's only attempt at playback singing of forthcoming Punjabi movie "Sat Sri Akal" was released in Chandigarh recently. Expressing grief that he could not attend the cremation ceremony, Mehndi added: "He was a very down-to-earth and simple person. He died very young. I am sure that had he not passed away so early, he would have built a strong foothold in Bollywood as he had a different voice and a versatile style of singing."

Ishmeet's good friend and co-contestant Sumitra Iyer became nostalgic when asked to share her experience with Ishmeet. She said: "If he had been around, I am sure there would have been a grand celebration at his home because he was not at his home to celebrate his 19th birthday. I try not to think too much about the tragedy. It is traumatic. I always want to remember him for his smiling face."

"I hope his parents get the courage and the strength to overcome the loss of their son. I believe he is still with us and that we should continue to feel his presence in our hearts," she added. She said all the contestants of the show had got together and celebrated Ishmeet's 19th birthday last year.

"Ishmeet used to take time to mix up with people. I remember we were together on his last birthday. After cutting the cake, he was cutting one slice each for both his parents. This one is for my mother , This for my father , he said. We had captured it all on camera. He was very excited but used to miss his mother a lot," Sumitra said.

Toshi Sabri, another contestant on the show, is planning to go to Ludhiana to meet Ishmeet's parents. "I wanted things to settle down a bit after his death and then meet them. He was a very nice singer and an equally good person," Toshi said.

After being crowned the "Voice of India", Ishmeet also participated in another music reality show "Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar". However, he was eliminated from the show. Prajakta Shukre, his co-participant from the contest, found herself at a loss of words on being told it was Ishmeet's birthday Sep 2.

"I just wish that wherever he is, he should be happy. I hope god gives his family the strength to come to terms with his death. I sincerely hope that Ishmeet comes back to them in some form or the other," Prajakta said.
