Aamir, Madhavan & Sharman In 3 Idiot
`We've written Aamir's funeral song' 3 Idiots' director Raju Hirani, composer Shantanu Moitra and lyricist Swanand Kirkire chat about the making of the film's music It was a `chowkidaar's' late night rounds that inspired the philosophy behind 3 Idiots and its music. n the area where director Rajkumar Hirani lived, in his hometown Nagpur, a watchman would walk around the entire night to ensure the safety of residents. "He would hit his stick on the ground and shout out `Jaagte raho'", remembers Hirani. "And occasionally, just so that everyone slept peacefully, he would shout out `All is well!'" Simple philosophy "But of course, robberies would still take place when we slept, but at least we slept in peace," Hirani smiles. "That formed the basic philosophy of the movie and our title song -that even if there are problems in life, just fool your heart into thinking that all is well, so you can face the situation more bravely."
As the music of 3 Idiots burns the airwaves, Hirani and the composer and lyricist for his movie, Shantanu Moitra and Swanand Kirkire, are a jovial trio. "You can call us the 3 idiots," laughs Kirkire, as the three banter over composing music with a campus feel for the `young' movie. Hirani laughs, "We may look old to you, but we are all young at heart." "It's a very important film for us, since this is the first time we have come up with such `young' music," says Moitra, who's worked with Kirkire as a team on several movies before, including Hirani's Lage Raho Munnabhai. "The philosophy behind the music is simple because it's about common people like you and me," says Hirani. "That's the brief I had given to these guys -- to give it a campus and buddy feel. The entire music of the film was made with the same vibe as well. "Shantanu would just pick the guitar and start humming during sessions when I'd discuss the script with them. I find it strange when people say `ek love song chahiye' or `ek item number chahiye'. To create a sound that's not heard before takes its time." Back to college Creating the music for 3 Idiots was a complete team effort, and the trio reveal how the lyrics and music were born out of brainstorming sessions. "Someone would come up with an idea, and that would trigger another idea in someone else, and eventually, we'd get a song," explains Kirkire.
"For `All izz well', we heard a song that had a hen's cock-a-doodle-do sound and from that I remember a cartoon I had seen about a chick looking at an omelette and saying, "Is that you brother?" he laughs. "That's how the lines, `Murki kya jaane ande ka kya hoga? Life milegi ya tawe par fry hoga? Koi na jaane apna future kya hoga' came up."
Even in the rest of the song and music, the carefree attitude of the college students, and the young vibe has been exemplified by the use of whistles during songs, bisleri bottles and bowls used as percussion instruments and completely wacky lines. "All our college music influences fused together in the songs," says Moitra. "While Raju and Kirkire's influences were songs like `Kisi ki muskurahaton pe ho nisaar' (Anari), mine were Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel's songs about the same thing in a different language." Funeral song While `Zoobi doobi' and `Give me some sunshine' are all part of the same philosophy, the trio laugh about a song `Behti hawa sa tha woh' they call "Aamir's funeral song." Laughs Hirani, "I can't reveal when and why the song comes in a movie, but we had a running joke about how this song will be played on all channels after Aamir dies. Aamir got so fed up that he'd say, "Kamino! Main abhi zinda hoon! Mere marne ki tayyari kyun kar rahe ho!" "That's the kind of fun we had during the movie," laughs Kirkire. "You may think Vidhu or Raju or Aamir are perfectionists, but at our hearts, we are all kids, and the music of the movie has taken back to those days."

Three heroes, three a**** -- really, was there a better way to live up to the film's title? Rajkumar Hirani got these buttock-shaped stools especially made for his film, and then seated his heroes in such a way that we know who's who just by haircuts and posture. And such nice colours. By Kunal M Shah Posted On Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 02:13:36 AM | | Raju Hirani | Aamir Khan |
Raju Hirani and Aamir Khan have been getting along during the making of 3 Idiots… so far. Given Aamir’s reputation as a controlling actor, there were bound to be creative differences. The first crack has appeared as Aamir has disagreed with Raju Hirani over the promos that the latter has selected. The actor is convinced of his views, but Raju isn’t budging either. It seems like a clash of egos is in the offing as both, the actor and the director, have proved their creative mettle.
The conscientious Raju Hirani and an equally dignified Aamir Khan did not get into a verbal disagreement, but Aamir quietly left the office as he was entirely unmoved by the promo selection. The clash may lead to problems with the promotions as Aamir now remains unavailable to the film’s unit.
Our source said, “There were three promos cut for the first look. The selected promo will be incorporated with the release of London Dreams on October 30. One promo was unanimously rejected by the three strong-headed guys, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, director Raju Hirani and actor Aamir Khan. The promos which Aamir preferred showed the film as it is, while Raju wanted to show the spirit of the film in its first look. Raju was not in favour of the promo which was cut on Aamir’s behest. So, when Raju said that he wanted to use the promo that he has finalised, Aamir tried to reason with him for close to 45 minutes. Aamir then realised that Raju wasn’t going to change his decision. An irate Aamir just left the office. The creative difference happened on Sunday at Vidhu’s Bandra office and Aamir has not visited them since, although the unit has been calling him. There was also a promotional event planned for Oct 29 for the unveiling of the first look of the film. But no one knows if it will happen now.”
The source further said, “Not many directors have the guts to stand up for their ideas in front of a star like Aamir Khan and put their foot down saying that they want something their own way. Aamir might be upset right now, but we are sure that his respect for Raju will bring him around. However, right now all’s not well.”
Aamir Khan and Raju Hirani remained unavailable for comment.

'I miss my Ghajini body' Patcy N in Mumbai
Aamir Khan looks good with Kareena Kapoor; the new promos of 3 Idiots' song Zoobie Doobie prove that. And when the actors promoted the number at a press meet, they looked very comfortable with each other. Aamir tells Patcy N what to expect from the song, and the Rajkumar Hirani film. Read on. You have crossed 40. But you're still playing a college student. When this film was offered to me, I had told Raju (Rajkumar Hirani) and Vinod (Vidhu Vinod Chopra, producer) that they were taking a dangerous decision; that I won't be able to play a college student. But Raju told me that the character Rancho was like me. We argued a lot on this. But I had liked the story. Plus, Raju and I wanted to work with each other. Two days before the shoot started in Bangalore, I even called Raju and Vinod and told them that they could change their decision. But they didn't want to. Raju told me that when I did Sarfarosh, nobody thought I could pull off the role of an ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police), or that I could play a tapori in Rangeela. Nobody thought I could play a villager in Lagaan or have a physique like that in Ghajini. So he said that I had taken up these challenges in the past, and should take up another challenge. Plus, I had already worked on my body to look younger and leaner. It's a challenge for an actor to do different kinds of characters like playing an 80 year old man or a woman. So I have taken up the challenge now and will wait for the audience reaction.

'When I do a film, I get into it completely' How do you manage to look younger day by day? When I do a film, I get involved completely. I can't explain how I do it. When I was offered Ghajini, (director) Murgadoss told me that I should look. I wondered how I would achieve that kind of a body within a year. It was impossible. But when I started, something started happening in my head and I started getting transformed. Do you miss your Ghajini body? Yes I do. I had worked very hard for it. But I had to change for this role in 3 Idiots, so I had to lose all the muscle. When I get free, I will start exercising again. 'I think I am friendlier with Kareena' This is the first time you are working with Kareena. What do you think of her as an actor? She is wonderful. My experience of working with her has been outstanding. First of all, she is very beautiful to look at. So you don't get tired working the whole day with her. The day passes with ease. Besides that, she has a lovely personality -- she is warm and friendly. She is a talented and spontaneous actress. I have liked her work all along and have been wanting to work with her. You have worked with her sister Karisma as well. How would you compare them? I met Kareena in 1993 when I was shooting for Andaz Apna Apna with Karisma. She was about 10 years old then. Working with both Karisma and Kareena has been very good; both are extremely professional. But I think I am friendlier with Kareena. 'I take marketing very seriously' Last updated on: November 13, 2009 You are promoting each song for 3 Idiots, unlike actors who promote the entire film. Are you feeling insecure? No, I'm not. Every film has its own requirement. I take marketing very seriously because I believe that if we have put in all our effort to make a film, why not put in effort to promote it too? Ghajini had a different strategy because it was a different kind of a film. Likewise, Taare Zameen Par was different. Zoobie Doobie has different looks. Did you have any inputs? I did whatever the director said. Raju has conceived this song. I was doubtful whether it would work initially but Raju was very confident. He broke the scenes in his mind and has done a wonderful job in it. He wanted a fairytale feel for the song because it's from Kareena's point of view. Everything in the song is happening in Kareena's head. Image: Sharman Joshi, Aamir Khan and R Madhavan in All Izz Well song in 3 Idiots

Re: Aamir, Madhavan & Sharman In 3 Idiot
The song has dance steps that reminds one of the steps actors like Shashi Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor would do earlier. There is a line in the song, 'Jaise filmo main hota hai ho raha hai hoobahoo.' So Raju wanted us to go back to the cinema in the earlier days. We tried to imitate Shammi Kapoor's Oh Haseena Zulfon Wali (Teesri Manzil) dance, where he dances in a white tuxedo. You have tried to imitate Boman Irani in the song too. Boman is a wonderful actor and a great co-star. I had to copy him for a few seconds. I'm not a very good mimic but when Raju told me to act like Boman, I said I would try. I think I have done a good job. Udit Narayan usually sings for you but nowadays Sonu Nigam has been singing for you. When will Udit sing for you again? Soon, I hope. I'm really fond of him. He has always sung some great songs for me. Who sings for me is a decision directors take; I cannot be involved in that. But Sonu is a wonderful singer. Sonu and Shreya Ghosal have brought a lot of pep, zing and energy to the song. Kareena is busy promoting 3 Idiots; when will she have time for Kurbaan, releasing November 20? I feel right now, we should promote Kurbaan more because I'm looking forward to it. I wish Saif (Ali Khan) and Kareena all the best for that film. I want it to be a big success. Re: Aamir, Madhavan & Sharman In 3 Idiot
3 Idiots: Short 'n' sweet soundtrackNovember 11, 2009 A soundtrack is like an opening batsman, one expects it to begin on an impressive note serving as a happy indication of things to come. And so every time an anticipated film's music hits the racks, everyone hopes the final product will be directly proportional to its fabulous melody. That this is hardly ever the case hasn't diminished one's enthusiasm in the least bit. Director Rajkumar Hirani borrows a whiff of an idea from Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone to cast 40-30something actors like Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi as first-year engineering students in his eagerly awaited 3 Idiots. The young caper also stars Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani. The droll promo has generated tremendous interest as has the curiosity about the novel promotion techniques mandatory to an Aamir flick.
The music, composed by Shantanu Moitra (Parineeta, Yahaan , Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi, Lage Raho Munnabhai) against Swanand Kirkire's penmanship, isn't stuff instant chartbusters are made of but stands unique for its palpable freshness and nonconformity. There are songs which are not necessarily mellifluous but catch on nevertheless owing to their everyman appeal. The good-humoured All izz well with its whistle away your woes approach, falls in that category. Performed with boyish, animated vigor by Sonu Nigam, Shaan and Kirkire, All izz well doesn't have the sleekness or spunk of Pathshala (Rang De Basanti). Instead it plays out with the callow fervor and pedestrian bounce of Samjho ho hi gaya (Lage Raho Munnabhai). All izz well comes in a remix version as well.
Akin to his earlier composition, Aane chaar aane, Moitra paints an old world charm and sublime drama around Behti hawa sat ha woh while celebrating (and recalling) a happy-go-lucky, dynamic attitude of its protagonist. The smooth quality of Shaan's baritone perfectly conveys an awed state of mind in the poetic, idealistic workings of this leisurely-paced number. Suraj Jagan and Sharman Joshi crib and croon for a break from a humdrum, competitive existence to grow up all over again in the loosely rebellious riffs of Give me some sunshine. While there are enough songs blaming chemistry laboratories for their miserable conditions, Give me some sunshine is mostly a monotonous whiner with Joshi pitching in bits of grumpy rap every now and then. The track doesn't possess enough punch or humour to truly hit home or heart.
Heightened sentimentality is a Sonu Nigam specialty. The singer uses this prowess with restrain and emphasis, alternately, to produce the high-pitched, emotion-packed Jaane nahi denge.
In almost every second soundtrack, romance is the running theme of the songs. Not 3 Idiots. In fact the only time Moitra makes a gooey exception, it's for the 1960s-flavoured rain ditty, Zoobi doobi. Nigam and Shreya Ghosal [ Images ] tic tac to the semi-rock and roll beats of Moitra's upbeat, whimsical creation. It's catchy, alright. Moreover, the prospect of watching Aamir and Kareena jive to its beats reads like bonus. This one comes in a fast-paced remixed avatar too.
Like I earlier mentioned, 3 Idiots isn't for the ready-steady-go listener. But if you pay this short 'n' sweet soundtrack some extra bit of attention, its curious tunes are bound to grow on you.

Faridkot (Punjab), Dec 20 (PTI) With a curly mop, a French beard and flashing a golden smile, Aamir Khan disguised himself as a documentary filmmaker to attend a pre-wedding ceremony in a village here. The actor, who is making surprise appearances in different cities to promote his upcoming film '3 Idiots', wore sunglasses and sported an artificial golden teeth while participating in the haldi ceremony of the bride last evening, spending more than two hours in the household. "The bride's family was not able to recognise him but when he revealed himself there was lot of excitement and hysteria in the house," said the groom, Gurjeet Singh. The 44-year-old actor later revealed himself and danced with the members of the bride's family.

Re: Aamir, Madhavan & Sharman In 3 Idiot
Campus and camaraderie SUDHISH KAMATH Friday, Dec 25, 2009 | Madhavan revisits his student days in 3 Idiots, which hits the screens today. sudhish kamath catches up with the actor |
tale of friendship Madhavan, Aamir Khan and Sharman Joshi in 3 Idiots “Have expectations from the film, folks. You will still be pleasantly surprised,” Madhavan tweeted a fortnight ago after watching the much-awaited film of the year, Rajkumar Hirani's 3 Idiots. His excitement has only grown manifold since. “Butterfly in stomach time. Don't know if I love it or hate it,” @ActorMadhavan posted earlier this week on the eve of previews for the media. We start the interview with the basics. How much of Chetan Bhagat's “Five Point Someone” finally made its way into 3 Idiots (the makers bought the rights to the book)? “Dramatically different,” he insists. “If you go there expecting ‘Five Point Someone', it will be the wrong expectation to have." Isn't Aamir playing Ryan, so that would make him Hari or Alok. “It's completely changed. You can't pin point the characters anymore. Aamir's is the lead role... he's the narrator of the film.” We dig more. “3 Idiots is about the best of friends and their journey of finding one of the ‘Idiots' and it's also an internal journey of how they've come to the positions they are in.” More Rang De Basanti magic? “Yes, you will find similar chemistry and camaraderie between friends but the true superstar of the film would be Mr. Rajkumar Hirani. The performances are so good that you will feel it's even more real than life. Especially, the romance.” Rajkumar Hirani does have the flair for lacing comedy with heavy-duty drama effortlessly. “I have not been able to describe the film. I don't think I have seen a film like this before. It's a story told from the heart to the heart. It's simple not complicated, and as they say, most beautiful things are simple. He makes you laugh and cry at will.” Madhavan is so much in awe of the film that he refuses to single out what was in it for him as an actor. “Just being part of it was one wholesome experience. This film belongs to everybody. As an actor, if I successfully pull off the role of the student...” We interrupt. Aamir has been playing student since 1988. Madhavan too started his film career playing a student a decade ago... Did the actors find it odd to continue to play students? “I knew that I had to play an engineering student. I looked at 75 photographs of students with Rajkumar Hirani. Like I did for Aayitha Ezhuthu, I decided to work on my look. Many of the guys in IIT were geeky-looking with glasses, they had no hairstyle as such, some of them were balding, I realised when I looked at photographs. They didn't have a six-pack, they were intelligent people with very normal bodies. I looked at my face and realised that the innocence was missing. I had to get rid of experience. So I went back to the photographs of my student days. I had puppy fat on the face when I was in college. It wasn't Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It was a realistic film and we had to be lost among the students. I got glasses to sit on the cheek and did the screen test.” A screen test? “It has such a stunning resemblance to my real life story. Raju could not comprehend why I was laughing when I heard it for the first time. So I told him, ‘Let me do a screen test, so that both of us know exactly where we are.' When we finished the screen test, he had tears in his eyes. He asked me how did I know the character. He had just taken a page out of my life.” What about Tamil? Now that Madhavan has shifted base to Mumbai and cut down on his Tamil films, does he have plans to come back at all? “Now, I am completely exhausted. I need to take a break. After Evano Oruvan and Yaavarum Nalam and this, I can't go back to doing mundane stuff. So I will wait for the right film. Hopefully, it will be a film by Vikram Kumar who made 13B ( Yaavarum Nalam in Tamil) and that will take at least six months of scripting.” Besides, as an actor, he has an action-packed 2010 with four Hindi releases after 3 Idiots. “I have Teen Patti, Tanu Weds Manu and two untitled films, including one with Kangna Ranaut.”

Re: Aamir, Madhavan & Sharman In 3 Idiot
Aamir Khan who? Tour guide hasn't heard of the star MUMBAI As one of Bollywood's most recognized faces, superstar Aamir Khan is not accustomed to drawing blank looks at the mention of his name. A tour guide in southern India's temple town of Mahabalipuram took Khan by surprise when he admitted to never even having heard of the actor. "I asked him if he had heard of Shah Rukh Khan, he said no. I asked him if he knew Aamir Khan, but he just shook his head. "That is when I realized that I had gone through the trouble of wearing a wig, and false teeth for someone who wouldn't have recognized me anyway," Khan said. The 44-year-old actor recently undertook a whirlwind trip round the country to promote his latest film `3 Idiots'. Khan was in disguise most of the time as part of a contest that was part of the promotions. "I asked him if he watched Hindi movies, but he said he didn't. He said the only Hindi movie he had watched was one with Dharmendra, and therefore the only Hindi film hero he knew was Dharmendra. He had absolutely no idea of any Hindi films," Khan told reporters. The actor invited the guide to Mumbai for the film's premiere, saying it made him realism that his status as a Bollywood film star didn't always guarantee him instant recognition. Khan toured Benaras, Punjab, Kolkata and Gujarat in two weeks, almost always in a different disguise, and challenged fans to guess where he would be going next. `3 Idiots', which stars Khan along with Sharman Joshi, R. Madhavan and Kareena Kapoor released on December 25.
Khan plays an engineering student in the film, which has been directed by Raj Kumar Hirani. "I am not sure what kind of effect this kind of promotion will have on the prospects of the film. In fact I am not even sure it will affect the prospects of the film at all. But I do know that it has been a personal journey for me," the actor said.

Re: Aamir, Madhavan & Sharman In 3 Idiot
'I want everyone to watch my film'Last updated on: December 24, 2009
Aamir Khan employs a different marketing strategy for each of his films, and they never fail to work. To promote this Friday's release 3 Idiots, Aamir 'disappeared' for a couple of days and traveled all over India in various disguises. Three days before the film's release, Aamir made his appearance again, and spoke at length about his memorable experiences and India tour. Patcy N took notes: Whose idea was this 'disappearing act'?
Mine. But it was implemented by many people. They had a code name for me called Phantom and the operation was called Operation Spiderman. We started preparing for it four months in advance.
How was your journey? It was very exciting. I had an amazing experience in every state -- from Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. I met many people and learnt about their problems, aspirations and day-to-day issues. This game had different layers. Firstly, it was a marketing strategy for 3 Idiots, as it is connected to the story. In the film, my character Rancho disappears and his friends have to search for him. So we thought we should market the film in such a way that I go missing and my audience goes searching for me. Wherever I went, I made friends and gifted them gold rings. I have invited them to the premiere of 3 Idiots. Secondly, it was only a marketing strategy. I wanted to connect with common people. Usually, when I visit the different parts of India, people know me and treat me like an actor. But here, nobody recognised me. People treated me like a common man and that was a new experience for me. The third layer of this trip was that I wanted to throw light on certain issues in the country. I went to Chanderi in Madhya Pradesh, a place where weavers live. Two years ago, I heard it was a dying profession and that they were running into losses. I wanted to highlight their problems and request people to wear hand-woven clothes as much as possible. Likewise, I wanted to highlight the problem of education. So I went to Gujarat where the education system is good. There is free education in small schools up to Standard Seven. How much of this will help the film? I don't know that. But I liked the idea and its various layers. Image: Aamir Khan Photographs: Pradeep Bandekar
