FOUR BEFORE

PERFORMING BEFORE the Ballad King takes some doing but this pack of four seemed primed to give him a feel of Indian energy. "It's our responsibility to prepare the stage for Bryan by lifting the crowd's spirit to the optimum level and give Bryan a feel of Indian music," says Jimmy Felix of the Channel V's Aasma band, which performed before Bryan Adams in Delhi and Bangalore. Jimmy plays guitar and keyboards besides lending his voice and considers Adams and Remo Fernandes as his inspiration. "We have grown up listening to them, it was a privilege to play in his presence."

"We performed "Chandu Ke Chacha", which has been accepted well across the country and two more dance numbers from the album to give the concerts a rocking start," informs an excited Neeti Mohan, a product of Miranda House. Neeti is trained in classical music and has groomed her dancing skills under Ashley Lobo. "VIVA's success was the inspiration. As I was performing dance and singing all through my studies, I was not overawed by the task at all. The only difference was the magnitude of the crowd."

Talking about their selection out of 15000 candidates, Sangeet Haldipur, who is also deft at guitar apprises, "Channel V was not just looking for singers. Besides three judges to evaluate our singing talent, there were senior people, who were constantly keeping an eye on our stamina, dancing skills, attitude and visual appeal."

As for the future, Vasudha, another Delhiite, an alumna of Hindu College says, "We are going to stick together. We have to prove the media hype is for real." Jimmy adds "We still have a year left of the contract with the channel, and we are working on our next album."

Giving company to the band were veejays Gaurav and Shruti, who anchored for the capsule about the making of the show. "Two years ago when Bryan came to India, I could not make up my mind whether to go or not and see this time I presented him on stage," wonders Shruti. As for the funniest part of the exercise Shruti says, "Gaurav, himself."

For song on demand, Jimmy wanted Bryan to sing "Whatever I Do I Do It For You" to revive some memories. "Whenever I used to sing this song in Jaipur, girls used to demand an encore. I am sure he will not disappoint me." Bryan didn't.

Together they rock!

Still charged, still rocking, three years after its creation, Aasma band continues to sparkle, finds Nandini Nair

ALL FOR ONE The band members of Aasma in New Delhi

They might appear 40 minutes late but they wear their celebrity status lightly. Channel V created Aasma, but Neeti, Vasudha, Jimmy and Sangeet have sustained it. The band members, who were in the Capital recently for a Synergy Loyalty Programme held at Shangri La hotel, insist on make-up and jackets, after lunch, and before appearing publicly.

Having studied in Delhi University, band members Neeti Mohan and Vasudha Sharma call it "our Delhi," and say they love being here.

They pose for cameras with a disarming enthusiasm. When their manager yells, "Give me action!" they respond with exaggerated pouts, opened shirt buttons and long-live-rock-and-roll gestures. After the photo-shoot, they eagerly crowd around the camera to see their actions in images.

The camaraderie

Even after a short interaction, their cheer and merriment show their camaraderie. Sangeet Haldipur, wearing a black jacket, says, "It has been a progressive gelling." With model looks and exposed chest, Jimmy Felix quips, "We are still learning about each other." Vasudha, in pink interrupts, "We love being together." In rapid fire Neeti adds, "We have a great chemistry." Jimmy with an underhand smile professes, "All four of us are literally mad." Vasu elaborates, "Pre-show and post-show we are mad."

They are unfazed by the crash and burn of the previous Channel V discovery, VIVA. They take success in their stride and feel they will survive with the right priorities. They know that comparisons are unavoidable but feel that they have the passion to hold together against the odds.

Considering the absence of airs and conceit, Sangeet's comment, "Even after three years it hasn't sunk in," seems believable. The band is quick to attribute their existence to Channel V. He asserts, "They are like our parents. They have created us, raised us and now have let us go." "From 1000 to 100 to 25 to eight and then four," says Neeti, with earrings jangling, describing the selection process of Channel V.

At first, she recounts, a kilometre long queue of 3000 aspirants in Delhi deterred her. But the next morning she queued up for the auditions at 5 a.m. Jimmy, who travelled from Jaipur for the audition, had to sleep in his car when he came down to the Capital. Of Aasma he says simply, "It has changed my life." "But in Jaipur he was already a star," Vasu quickly adds, giving him his due. "He had a band. Only now his reach has increased."

The strengths

Discussing what worked in their favour over thousands of other candidates, they say that Channel V was looking for people with musical talent and onstage élan. Jimmy suggests, "They were looking for performers, not just singers."

They laugh riotously and mock each other in good humour. They insist that politically incorrect jokes not be quoted. They are quick to mention their strengths.

"We are four differently talented people," says Sangeet. Jimmy lays out their individual talents. "Sangeet is great at Jazz. Neeti can do both classical and Western. While Vasu can sing Alanis or a bhajan equally well."

Together, however, their USP, Neeti says, is, "We are not onstage celebrities. It is not a celebration for just the crowd, it is a celebration for us too." Sangeet, always the one for a quick byte, laughs, "To love the crowd you have to be the crowd." Their biggest challenge, interestingly, is corporate gigs; the biggest achievement is to get the businessman on the floor.

For this under-25 band, Aasma stands for "youth, energy and warmth." While they have sung for Shamir Tandon (music director of Page 3 and Corporate) and for a forthcoming movie Mirror, their ardent wish is to work with their favourite, A.R. Rahman.

"Let us sing!" they scream out to him and hope he hears.

Rock to chew on

Aasma rocked the music world with a foot tapping `Chandu ke chacha'. Now, they are inventing new sounds

SKY IS THE LIMIT Aasma has set its sights on Bollywood numbers Photo: Anu Pushkarna

Aasma's first time rocker Chandu ke Chacha made people Get up, Get up and Dance. Three years down the line, the now mature artistes and performers, Jimmy Felix from Jaipur, Neeti Mohan from Delhi, Sangeet Haldipur from Mumbai and Vasudha Sharma from Delhi feel it's their ability to gel with one another that has made them rock.

Composition, originality, Bollywood songs, remixes, live shows... a lot seems to be on their mind. In the city recently to perform at VJTI Institute of Technology, they set the place on fire with different genres from Tumse he pyaar karna hai, to Ban ja mere balma, to Rubabru, from the Rang de Basanti to the hip and happening Kajarare and finally building up the crescendo with Chandu ke Chacha Ne Chandu ke Chachi.

Now they have set their eyes on Bollywood numbers with one music video of a yet to be released film Mirror that has been composed and sung by them.

"We will have to find our own path," says philosophy graduate Neeti, the lady who was chosen by dance as she puts it. What makes them stage pyromaniacs is not their songs but their inner harmony. "None of us has ever done that consciously, whatever we do on stage is what we are," explains Jimmy.

Vasudha, youngest and a maniacal lyricist, says, "It also has to do with our relationship with each other, and the kind of space we give to each other."

What about egos?

After all artistes are known to be sensitive folks with massive egos and in a field as competitive as music what makes them stay together? "I think the bigger picture we have in mind is that of Aasma," says Vasudha, and Sangeet pitches in: "I think Aasma itself is an ego. And now that we have moved out of Channel V contract, we want to explore the industry," says Sangeet, the musical backbone and pianist.

And how has the reality been for them? "You see a lot of others in similar situations, it makes it tough. But at the end of the day, whatever songs are done, true talent lasts," adds Jimmy.

"Till now we have been singing someone else's numbers. Now, we want to bring out a new album that will have a distinct Aasma identity," says Sangeet. "The new album will have high energy, , lots of acoustics, lots of drums, piano, lots of hip, hop and will have appealacross generations," promises Jimmy.

[V]'s pop star band Aasma out with second music video

Indiantelevision.com Team
(13 January 2004 7:00 pm)

MUMBAI: Channel [V]'s second pop star band Aasma is now out with their second music video. The new video featuring the four pop stars is directed by Channel [V]'s Deepak Dhar and Anirban Bhattacharya.

Their song Chandu ke Chacha has been popular among the teens and the grown ups alike. Barely two months after its launch, the chartbusting debut single from Aasma created a whole new craze.

To add to the already buoyant mood, Aasma and Channel [V] have come together to create a second video that reflects the fun and excitement that the song evokes. It needs mention here that this is for the first time in the Indi-pop history that any band has released a second video for their hit single without it being a remix!

Dreaming to reach 'Aasma'

After Viva, the Channel V-backed band Popstars 2, now rechristened Aasma, is making waves on FM and telly

Aasma members — (L-R) Jimmy, Vasudha, Neeti and Sangeet

THE SECOND pop band produced by Channel V, initially called Popstars 2, has finally decided to name itself `Aasma'. The idea is, as all the four members of the group concur, "to aim towards reaching for the skies". And hence, "an apt description of their limitless ambitions".

The band members, Sangeet Haldipur, Neeti Mohan, Vasudha Sharma and Jimmy Felix, however, found the name-choosing task quite hard. Apparently, whoever had an idea put it on a board, and finally, the right word surfaced.

"Naming a band is perhaps the hardest thing that we have done since coming together. This will be our collective identity from now on and we had to ensure that all of us were comfortable with the name we chose. We explored several names, and finally chose Aasma, because it essentially means limitless, which is what our horizons are," the members said. For them, the Channel's Popstars 2 platform has come as "a wonderful canvas on which to paint our musical dreams, where there are no definitions or limitations." No wonder then, the title song of their debut album talks of Aasma too - Aasma Choo Lenge Hum... Interested? Well, catch them this week onwards in FM channels, and if willing to have a view, tune in to Channel V.\

Aasma to Super Sale

You've heard her croon her way to be one of the fantastic four of Aasma. Now meet Neeti Mohan as the co-host of Super Sale

Neeti from Aasma to television. How do you perceive this transition?
It's a very intended transition. I follow a very simple funda in life: grab whatever good comes your way. It's a great opportunity to work once again with STAR (Earlier, Popstars being a Channel [V] venture) and also there's Sajid Khan, an amazing host and a great person to work with.

So, what exactly is your role in Super Sale?
I am the comic relief in Super Sale. By that I mean, I provide relief from comic man Sajid Khan. (Laughs) Just kidding, I can be called as the co-host, but majorly, I talk about the sponsored gifts that the contestants can win or have already won. I also chitchat here and there with Sajid and the contestants. And I also confuse the contestants. (Laughs)

So what about Aasma?
Aasma is top priority in my life. It's because of Aasma that I am here right now.

Do you have performances regularly? And what about any new albums?
Yes, we have just had a performance at the Remix Birthday Bash, and yes, new albums are lined up.

All right, can we have three words that describe yourself?
Vibrant, bubbly, happy and focussed. Whoa! That's four already.

What's Neeti Mohan's favorite kind of food?
South Indian or homemade. Nothing like it.

Favorite romantic getaway?
Singapore or just a drive on Marine Drive, Mumbai.

Gotcha! So who is the lucky guy?
Hey, I saw that coming. Nothing of that sort... These are a few places I have been to and I often go on a drive on Marine Drive with my friends. That's it.

Your best ability other than singing?
I am a trained dancer in Jazz, Ballet and Bharatnatyam.

So, singing, VJing or dancing? What comes first?
According to priority… first, of course, is singing, then dancing and then hosting or VJing.
