Bollywood actress and Celebrity Big Brother winner Shilpa Shetty wed London-based businessman Raj Kundra on Sunday at a lavish Hindu ceremony in Khandala, near Mumbai. Shetty, 34, said it was a "dream wedding".

Nithya Ramani reports from Khandala, Maharashtra, on Shilpa Shetty's wedding on Sunday, which saw a surprising absence of star power. Images: Nithya Ramani, Hitesh Harisinghani.
 

Unlike Bollywood's last star wedding (AbhiAsh, in case you had forgotten), Shilpa Shetty's wedding to British businessman Raj Kundra was conspicuous by its absence of star power.

 

Bollywood was represented by producer Vashu Bhagnani and his son Jaccky, who are Kundra's neighbours at his new home in Juhu, northwest Mumbai, and actor Rohit Roy and his wife Mansi (we didn't know they were that close to Shilpa and Raj).

 

Sunil Shetty -- who also hails from Mangalore's Bunt community like Shilpa and Aishwarya Rai -- we hear was also present.

 

Raj and Shilpa plan to invite the rest of Bollywood to their reception on Tuesday, November 24, before the couple jet off to the Bahamas for their honeymoon

Shilpa increases gold prices in India!

There is a joke going on around at the Dalal Street, that gold prices are soaring because of Shilpa Shetty. The Bollywood actress seems to have purchased half the gold in India for her marriage. Jokes apart, Shilpa seemed to have bought a lot of the precious yellow metal and got designer Tarun Tahiliani to fashion a dress out of it. If her wedding dress had make the world take a note of it, Shilpa was in no mood to take it easy during the wedding reception.
 

Shilpa set ablaze the banquet hall when she arrived hand in hand with hubby Raj Kundra. The sizzling Shilpa donned a contemporary styled ghagra choli sexily draped around her awesome figure. Tahiliani made sure that Shilpa's outfit shone and onlookers had to hide their eyes behind shades! If the gold in her outfit wasn't enough matching jewellery from Anmol jewels captivated the guests. After all, Shilpa had to sparkle among the who's who of the tinsel town.

The blushing bride looked radiant in designer Tarun Tahiliani's two piece outfit in gold with Swarovski-encrusted bodysuit along with a satin sari-gown in the same shade while hubby Raj chose a black half sherwani suit.

Shilpa and Raj's grand reception rocks

Shilpa Shetty now Shilpa Kundra and Raj Kundra threw a lavish reception for their guests at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai on Tuesday evening. The who's who of Bollywood was present on the occasion to wish the newly married couple. There was a huge buzz in the banquet hall when she Shilpa and Raj arrived hand in hand. Shilpa donned a golden outfit designed by Tarun Tahiliani and with matching jewellery is from Anmol jewels. Raj Kundra sported a impressive black Sherwani.




The impressive guest list included Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and his wife Gauri. Hrithik Roshan and Sussanne Roshan, Rani Mukherjee, Fardeen Khan, Vivek Oberoi, Sameera Reddy, Amisha Patel, Kangana Ranaut, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Manish Malhotra, Karan Johar, Vivek Oberoi, Govinda, Rekha and Jaya Pradha among others. IPL boss Lalit Modi and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi were also present on the occasion.




Shilpa and Raj made sure that their guests could have no complaint about the food. The menu included a selection of Indian, Western (Italian) and Asian (Thai and Chinese) cuisine served at live counters. The big attraction of the evening was the nine-tier wedding cake weighing over 80 kgs consisting of chocolate, candied fruits, fruit peels and nuts. The decoration chosen by Shilpa and her sister Shamita Shetty, consisted of flowers and butterflies. RDB and Rishi Rich performed free of cost during the reception.

Clad in a red sari and flaunting diamonds and emeralds, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty
exchanged wedding vows with London-based businessman Raj Kundra in a close-knit
family affair in this Maharashtra hill station on Nov. 22.


"Everything went very well.



All parents want their children to get married
happily and that goes the same for Shilpa's parents as well. They are very
happy," Kiran Bawa, Shetty's friend and business partner, said after the
wedding.



"Raj and Shilpa both were very nervous before the marriage but now they are
happy. We are going straight to Raj's house in Mumbai," she added.
Wearing a red sari designed by Tarun Tahiliani, the 34-year-old actress married Kundra in
a ceremony according to the Bunt tradition of the Mangalorean community the
Shettys belong to. Dressed in a maroon sherwani with golden embroidery and a
turban with his face veiled by a sehra (string of pearls), Kundra held a sword
in his hand as he left Amrit Villa, about five minutes away from Bawa Villa,
where the wedding was held, in a two-horse chariot.



Photographers scrambled
to capture the goings-on while curious star-gazers were kept at bay by private
and police security.



The wedding was the climax of the two-day festivities that included a sangeet
ceremony Nov. 21."Raj and Shilpa gave a beautiful performance. Shilpa danced to
the song `Mere hathon mein naun naun chudiyan' and Raj did a Michael Jackson
performance, which was beautiful," Bawa said. "Instead of being a businessman,
Raj should have taken acting as his career."



The sangeet ceremony was a small affair and attended by close friends and
family.

Shilpa's co-star in Dus and Phir Milenge Abhishek Bachchan couldn't make it. But his gorgeous wife Aishwarya Rai and father Amitabh more than made up for his absence.

 

 

It seems the Bachchans and the Kundras are going to be neighbours as Shilpa and Raj are moving to Juhu, a suburban area in Mumbai where Amitabh Bachchan's famous building Jalsa is located.

In Britain, feminist Germaine Greer defended Shilpa in The Guardian, while The Independent showcased the issue on its front page on Thursday.

British MP Keith Vaz raised the issue in the British Parliament, the House of Commons, and Shilpa has Prime Minister Tony Blair rooting for her.

Back home, demonstrations have rallied to her support and condemned the racism on the show.

Do you think the publicity will work wonders for Shilpa's acting career? Can she use the Big Brother drama to leap onto the international stage, something Aishwarya Rai, who hails from the same Bunt community as Shilpa, has not been too successful in doing?
