ACTRESS - SOHA ALI KHAN

Daughter of actress Sharmila Tagore and cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, Soha Ali Khan comes with a gloriously mixed pedigree of royalty and glamour. But unlike most star kids, acting wasn't her first career option. It was only after a Master's degree from the London School of Economics and stints with CitiBank and Ford Foundation that she decided to try her luck in films. Though big time box office success has eluded her, Soha received critical acclaim for films like Rang De Basanti and Khoya Khoya Chaand. Now she is awaiting her next release, Tum Mile

Sharmila Tagore, Soha share screen space in 'Life Goes On'

By Dibyojyoti Baksi_MUMBAI

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has starred with her daughter Soha Ali Khan for the first time in "Life Goes On", a film on British Indians that was screened at the ongoing 11th Mumbai Film Festival.

"This is the first time Sharmila Tagore and Soha are sharing screen space. I have known Sharmila Tagore for a long time and from the very beginning I have imagined her in the character she is playing," said Sangeeta Datta, who has made her directorial debut with the film.

"I have worked with Soha while I was associate director in Rituparno Ghosh's `Antar Mahal'," said London-based Datta.

The story of "Life Goes On" revolves around the cultural conflict between a father and his youngest daughter, with different sub-plots shown in flashback. The story, script and screenplay are by Datta and detail the prejudices and Islamphobia still deep-rooted among certain sections of immigrant Indians in London. It is a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's "King Lear" but it has a hopeful ending.

"The story is the contemporary adaptation of `King Lear', though the ending is more hopeful. It shows that love can conquer," explained Datta.

Sharmila Tagore, Girish Karnad, Om Puri, Soha Ali Khan, Rez Kempton, Neerja Naik, Mukulika Banerjee, Christopher Hatherall, Stef Patten and Aria Gitanjali Banerjee Watts played the lead roles in the film.

Datta worked as an associate director in Rituparno Ghosh's films "Chokher Bali", "Raincoat" and "Antar Mahal".

When asked about their performance while sharing screen space, she said: "They were as good as expected. They gave an amazing performance while shooting an extremely difficult scene."

She said Sharmila is a perfectionist and even guides coactors. "Sharmila wants the shots to be perfect. She helps her co-stars whenever required," said Datta.

The director wanted to cast veteran Bengali actor Saumitra Chatterjee, but he was not keeping well, so Girish Karnad was chosen instead.

"I was very keen to rope in Saumitra Chatterjee but he was not keeping well those days.
Thankfully, Karnad agreed," said Datta.

Lyricist Javed Akhtar translated two Tagore songs into Urdu for the film. Datta says this is the first time any Rabindra Sangeet has been translated into Urdu.

"Rabindra Sangeet itself has been used in films plenty of times, but this is the first time the lyrics of such a song have been translated into Urdu with the same tune," said Datta.

She would prefer to call "Life Goes On" a British movie.

"I am a British Bengali but still hold an Indian passport. As the story is about immigrant Indians in London and has been shot with a British crew, probably it would be considered a British movie," guessed Datta.

The Mumbai film fest started Oct 29 and will conclude Nov 5.
The film will also be screened at the Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council (MIAAC) Film Festival in New York this month.

On Friday, Soha Ali Khan made a quick trip to the city to promote her new film Tum Mile. ILK caught up with her for a chat.

Your take on Tum Mile

Soha Ali Khan
Soha Ali Khan at City Centre on Friday.

Tum Mile is a special film. Everybody’s put in their best efforts to make it successful. It’s the most beautiful film of my career till date. It’s about the struggles we face, with special emphasis on a live-in relationship set against the backdrop of the Mumbai floods. It’s a sensitive love story. We show the floods that dismantled Mumbai in 2005, and simultaneously, we show the storm within ourselves. It’s about falling and staying in love. I think the younger generation would be able to relate to it.

Did you relate to your character in Tum Mile?

She’s somebody I relate to very much. She’s a modern 21st century working woman, independent in her thinking, who respects her traditional values. She’s very similar to how I am in real life. That was one of the reasons why I decided to work in the film.

How was shooting for Tum Mile?

It was really difficult to shoot, but the saving grace was shooting in Cape Town. The beautiful locations were indeed soothing. But to shoot the floods, we had to be in a well, and the water level soared high, almost reaching Emraan’s shoulders. It was tiring, hectic, but at the same time it was interesting. I don’t know whether I’ll be able to do such a film again.

How was it sharing screen space with Emraan Hashmi, given his image?

(Laughs) I was slightly apprehensive. I know what it means to do a romantic film with Emraan Hashmi. But the story was so good that I just couldn’t turn down the offer. It was nice working with Emraan.

Saif has said that he’d love to share screen space with you. Any plans of working with Saif?

I don’t have any plans of working with Saif at the moment. I may work with him in the future. But I’ll make sure I don’t play his sister in reel life too.

Do you take acting lessons from your mother, Sharmila Tagore?

No, I don’t. I feel when you are facing the camera, you need to face the difficulties yourself. Acting is very difficult to teach. But after watching my films she (Sharmila Tagore) always gives me critical feedback. However, I think after watching Tum Mile she will give good feedback. (Laughs) I’m sure she will like it.

And does your father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, watch your films?

No, he doesn’t watch any Hindi movies. So, he never comments on our films. He’s only interested in watching cricket.

Your debut was in a Bengali film, Iti Srikanto. But you later disappeared from Bengali cinema. Do you plan to act in Bengali films?

After Iti Srikanto, I worked with Rituparno Ghosh in Antarmahal, but after that I haven’t done any Bengali movies. However, Aparna Sen and I have been discussing a film called Gaynar Baksho for quite sometime. Hopefully that will work out soon. I definitely want to work in Bengali films.

What’s next?

There’s a film called Tera Kya Hoga Jaani which is ready to release. I’m working on some other projects. But for the moment I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Tum Mile.

Tum Mile turns Soha into a hydrophobe

The whole shooting experience was a 'nightmare': Soha Ali Khan
Soha Ali Khan will think twice before doing a disaster film again after Tum Mile, which has the July 2005 Mumbai deluge as its backdrop, as the actress feels the film has turned her hydrophobic.

The actress calls the whole shooting experience a "nightmare" and is happy that the film is finally over.

"Shooting for the film was pretty much a nightmare. I don't think I will able to do this kind of film again. I am glad that it is over. It was physically very demanding, very tiring hard work and I have become quite phobic to water since the film," she says.

Soha plays the romantic lead opposite Emraan Hashmi in the film which will hit theatres on 13 November. The film has been directed by Kunal Deshmukh of Jannat fame.

The actress was initially apprehensive to work opposite Hashmi, known for his "serial kisser" image, but contrary to his image, Hashmi was a "pleasure to work with."

"I was apprehensive because it is such a romantic story and working with someone with whom the chemistry exists and somebody who does not show tantrums is important," she says.

"But I realised that we both are similar people, somewhat impatient but professionals. We complain a little bit but we always make sure that the shot is done, and we like to work long hours and learn our lines and are really committed to the job," she adds.

Set in Cape Town and Mumbai, the film follows the story of a former couple, who are thrown together to face the disaster of floods. The love story is told in flashbacks.

"A lot has been set in Cape Town, the story keeps cutting to the past but the scenes shot in the flood are not romantic. It is about two people, who used to be in a relationship and are forced to be in a situation at a particular time," the actress says.

Soha, who is known for her off-beat roles in movies like Antar Mahal, Ahista Ahista, Khoya Khoya Chand and Mumbai Meri Jaan, says she agreed to do the film because it offered something she had never tried before.

The actress, who has also directed one of the songs in the end credit along with Hashmi, says she has no plans to take up direction anytime soon.

The song is called "Tum Mile (Slow Version)" and the music is by Pritam. "The song comes in the end credit. Kunal wanted a home video feel to it so he handed us the camera and left us. It is really nothing. You can't even say that I am a director. It is a miracle that we got something out of it," she says.

The actress, who started her showbiz journey with multi-starrer Yeh Dil Mange More, has carved herself a niche with films like Rang De Basanti, 99 and Khoya Khoya Chand.

She will next appear in Sudhir Mishra's Tera Kya Hoga Johnny, Accident and Life Goes On, where she shares screen with her mother, Sharmila Tagore, for the first time.

Music Reviews

EXPECTATIONS

Hasn't it become all so predictable when one begins the review of any music coming from the house of Bhatts that has a Pritam and Emraan Hashmi association to it? So many times has a statement being made that 'Good music is pretty much on the cards when forces like Mukesh Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt, Pritam, Emraan Hashmi and lyricist Sayeed Quadri come together.' After all, their track record over the years has been a testimony to this fact. Hence bowing down to sheer predictability of listening to some real good music once again, one plays on Tum Mile which also has another lyricist Kumaar, who has now become a regular with Pritam, as an added contributor for writing the title song.

MUSIC

With Neeraj Sridhar at the helm of affairs, what does one expect? Another 'Hari Krishna Hare Ram'? Or a 'Aahun Aahun'? Or a 'Chor Bazari'? Well, get set for some surprise as both Pritam and Neeraj make a conscious effort to do something completely different with the title song of 'Tum Mile'. This time around it's the feeling of innocent and pure love that takes centre-stage as Neeraj gets into the shoes of a lovelorn youngster who is plain and simple glad to have found the love of his life. A rhythmic tune that has a much better 'antra' when compared with 'mukhda', 'Tum Mile' has an elaborate setting to it in it's opening version.

However, to one's pleasant surprise, even better versions follow after a while with Javed Ali and Shafqat Amanat Ali getting their own solo versions of the same song. Frankly, the two singers do well in stealing the show this time around. Even though it's the original version which is currently on air due to ingredients that give it a popular appeal , the ones that should turn out to be 'lambi race ka ghoda' are the 'Love Reprise version' by Javed Ali and 'rock version' by Shafqat Amanat Ali.

Javed Ali takes huge strides with his soft rendition in this melodious outing which stays away from excessive musical instruments. On the other hand Shafqat Amanat Ali, who hails from Pakistan, gets another fabulous song under his belt after 'Mitwa' [Kabhi Alvidaa Naa Kehna] with this soft rock version of the title song. All in all, this is a song that grows on you and once the tune is set in mind, there is no stopping.

However, one is always greedy for more when it's a Bhatt-Pritam-Emraan combination and this is where the trump card is out in the form of 'Dil Ibaadat'. If one thought that Tum Mile was fabulous then one listening of 'Dil Ibadat' will quickly make you change loyalties. In this love song, K.K. has a number in hand which could well be an award winning outing if aided by good picturisation. If presented in a highly passionate and dramatic manner, something which goes with the genre of the song, 'Dil Ibadat' could well be the 'Khuda Jaane' [Bachna Ae Haseeno] moment for Pritam.

Special mention is reserved for the oriental touch to the arrangements which gives that added edge to 'Dil Ibadat' that also sees a 'rock version' as the album progresses. This is where one begins to draw comparisons with Pritam's soundtrack of Life In A Metro since that too belonged to a similar space.

The signature tune that is currently being heard along with the promos of Tum Mile kick starts 'Tu Hi Haqeeqat', which is yet another solo, this time Javed Ali at the helm of affairs. By this time, one realizes that the album is made of all-male singers. In fact this could well be the first ever instance for the music of a film with romance as it's strong point not to be featuring any female voice at all. Coming back to 'Tu Hi Haqeeqat', it is not as strong as the title song or 'Dil Ibaadat' but that's purely on a comparative scale. Rendered by Javed Ali, this one has a core Indian feel to it and is the easiest tune to grasp. Perhaps this is the very reason one looks forward to the songs that follow since in Tum Mile one doesn't expect Pritam to churn out a conventional Bollywood tune.

It's a journey into the 'youngistan' world with Mohit Chauhan taking listeners right into a campus through 'Iss Jahaan Mein'. A lively number with fast paced arrangements and a definite rhythm to it, 'Iss Jahan Mein' still manages to get a melodic base to it. Also, one has heard Mohit Chauhan in quite a few slow moving tracks earlier, most of which are quite sober in appeal. However, this time around he also lets his hair down and with an innocent appeal to it; 'Iss Jahan Mein' does carry enough potential to be yet another 'Junoon' [New York].

K.K. returns to the scene with 'O Meri Jaan' and makes sure that he gets to croon some of the best tracks in the album. This time around it's a sad outing for the entire team which makes sure that the song turns out to be an emotionally charged affair, whether in terms of composition, writing or singing. This one is again straight out of the kind of genre that Life In A Metro had established a few years back. If you had liked the songs back then, there is no reason why they won't work now in the context of Tum Mile.

Finally comes 'Soul Of Tum Mile' and as expected, this four minutes piece begins with the sound of a thunderstorm. There is a slow and steady movement in this instrumental piece which shows an escalation coming in at just the right junctures. Boasting of an international appeal, this piece become more intriguing 100 seconds down the line, hence ensuring that it would add on to the dramatic quotient as a part of the film's background during some intense dramatic moments in the film.

OVERALL

2009 is clearly Pritam's year. If he has enjoyed the biggest musical success in the form of Love Aaj Kal then he has also seen a steady success run of New York. If at the beginning of the year he gave multiple item hits in Billu then he has also got some pure and fresh music in place for Tum Mile. In between he has found some good tunes rolling for All The Best and Dil Bole Hadippa too, which re-establishes the fact that he is clearly THE most prolific hit-maker that we have in Bollywood today. This is what he proves yet again with Tum Mile where he gives Bhatts their very own Life In A Metro to be preserved and relished for years to come.
