Aditya Narayan to turn anchor
Monday, April 16, 2007

Singer Udit Narayan’s son and child star Aditya Narayan will soon host a show on Zee. Aditya, who is already famous in Bollywood for his renditions and acting in ‘Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai’, is now taking an interest in television.

It is speculated that the show is based on music. When asked about it, Aditya laughed. “You take a guess. I am not supposed to disclose it,” he smiled.

Aditya has been out of news for almost five years. Quizzed whether he had taken a break from singing he says, “My voice started cracking as I reached adolescence and it became obvious. Hence, I stopped singing for a while. Every boy goes through this phase!”

He adds,  “I was concentrating on learning  music. I went to London and studied contemporary English music at Vocal Tech Institute. Occasionally, I would sing at my father’s concerts to test my voice. Now, I intend to resume my studies for the Bachelor of Arts degree.”

The 20-year-old adds, “I have sung and I have acted. Anchoring will be a bridge between the two. I have never done it before.”

Aditya Narayan reunites with his first singing costar Asha Bhosle

By Subhash K. Jha, May 5, 2007

When last week 19-year old Aditya Narayan finally stood on stage to host Zee's music-talent show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, it was a moment of huge reckoning for him. The inimitable Asha Bhosle was watching him closely.

Says Aditya, "I'm 19, and I agree I'm from a musical family. Also, I've had considerable experience on stage with my father. But to have stalwarts like Ghulam Ali and Asha Bhosle watching me as I got a hang of my first full-fledged job as an anchor was an unsettling experience."

"Ashaji and I go back a long way," chuckles the affable Aditya. "I've been lucky enough to sing with her for A. R. Rahman in Rangeela and Taal as a child. Tell me, which kid has had this privilege. And now there she was in person smiling and observing me carefully."

Ashaji found Aditya cute. That made the debutant anchor's day and year. "When I had sung with Ashaji I was too young to know what it meant. But now, to have occupied the same space as her and to have her encourage me so warmly I couldn't have hoped for a more auspicious start to my career as an anchor."

To make Aditya even more nervous there was his father dropping in unannounced to check out how sunny-boy was doing. "If Papa had told me he was coming I'd have asked him not to. I knew I'd feel so self conscious in front of him! So he quietly finished recording his TV show Indian Idol and dropped in on our Sa Re Ga Ma Pa set to watch me from a hidden corner."

Aditya feels blessed. "Ghulam Ali Saab, Ashaji and my father (Udit Narayan), it was as though the heavens were blessing me. Yeah, I think I'll do okay as an anchor."

Rani Mukherjee is too old for me: Aditya Narayan

Up close and personal with Aditya Narayan after he has signed as the anchor of Zee's 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007-Sangeet ka Pratham Vishwa-Yudh'.

Q: How is it feeling hosting Zee 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007-Sangeet ka Pratham Vishwa-Yudh'?
A: It is feeling nice that I have got the opportunity of hosting such a good show. It is not a new show; it has been on television since the past thirteen years now and has done very well.

So when I was approached by the channel, initially I thought about it but I guess there was no need of thinking. I accepted the show even though I was not planning to begin my career before my studies. Also it is a musical based show, and I'm passionate about music.

Q: So that must be adding a greater responsibility on your shoulders as an anchor?
A: Yes it does add a sense of responsibility. Earlier too the anchors were Sonu bhaiya and Shaan bhaiya who did a very good job here on the show. Actually it is a show which does not have any usual anchors.

I'm not pointing my fingers at other anchors, but here the anchors here have been related to music so as an anchor too one can comment on the performance of the participants. But I will try to do my best.

Q: Do you have any prior experience of anchoring?
A: No I do not have any prior experience.

Q: So are you undergoing any kind of homework or training?
A: I have been watching the show for a long time now and so have a bit of cue. Also I have been with the team of Zee where I had been briefed about how to go about it.

I do have an experience of acting but it is different from anchoring. So I do not have to worry when professionals are guiding me. Also I will learn as time passes by.

Q: Tell us a bit about your academic background?
A: I was doing my graduation here but in between I left for London where I did a Diploma in English Contemporary Music. Now I'm in Mumbai for the past three month and willing to complete my graduation. I have also learnt Indian classical music from Satyanarayan Mishra and also took training under Kalyanji Anandji.

Q: Why Diploma in English Contemporary Music? Was it your choice?
A: See I want to know music to the fullest. Not just Indian or classical, I want to learn international music and in truly international way. It was purely my choice; Uditji did not want me to go abroad, but I forced my decision on him.

Q: So what are your future plans?
A: I have a lot planned for future. I want to do good work where I can utilize my capabilities to the fullest. I want to do good work and put in my best efforts in whatever I would do.

Q: Does it include films too?
A: Yes why not. I have acted before and will do films if I get good work which I can identify with. But my first preference would always be music. But I tell you it will not only be in films but also in other aspects. I want to spread my wings.

Q: So how much does Uditji guide you?
A: Frankly speaking, Uditji guides me in only one way. He only reminds me of my roots. He tells me that there is nothing compared to hard work and effort. He tells me that 'power comes with hard work'. That is all that he guides me about.

Q: Does being Udit Narayan's son help you in some way?
A: If I tell you frankly it does help and it doesn't. See if I did not have talent, I would have still managed some work considering that I was Unit Narayan's son. But till when? At some point, they would have known that I do not have the talent. Now since I'm his son, there is more expectation from me. So there is a plus side and a negative side too.

Q: So do people treat you differently since you are his son?
A: Yes they do sometimes.

Q: Coming on a lighter note, now that you are back, have you united with your old friends?
A: Yes I have and I'm happy to be back with them. I'm enjoying my time here with them.

Q: United with girlfriends too. Do you have girlfriends?
A: See it would be wrong if I say that I don't enjoy the company of men (laughs). I'm just 19 so I do have friends who are girls but basically I'm a reserved person and do not have a girlfriend. But see women following makes a person star (laughs again).

Q: Uditji is a judge in Indian Idol and you are the anchor of challenge 2007. Do you think you will be able to attract more eyeballs?
A: (laughs) I hope so. But I also wish the other show success because my father is a part of it.

Q: We have heard that you wish to work with Jiah Khan?
A: (laughs out loud) Actually I was asked as to who I would like to work with and since I'm young so I think that I would look good with Jiah since even she is young. I don't think I would look good with Rani Mukherjee at this age. Moreover she acts well so what is the problem. (SAMPURN)

TALKING POINT with Aditya Narayan
Aparna Chandra

After a film role and an album, you suddenly disappeared from the scene?
I was 10 years old when I did the album. But as I approached adolescence, my voice began to crack and I was forced to make the choice of staying away, even though the offers continued. In fact, the changes in my voice haven’t completely set in.

So hosting Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007 is a way to reintroduce yourself?
Certainly. I am not looking at hosting as a career. The way I see it, this stint starts me off on a fresh note where I have no other pressures apart from the TRPs and my singing on the show. I have no contemporaries to feel competitive with.

You had earned a reputation of being bratty and annoying.
At 20, I am still naughty. But I am a much humbler self. I feel like I have mind of a 30-year-old now. As for the show, I want to keep the mood casual and happy.

Did the maturity come from dealing with the very public controversies concerning your father (Udit Narayan).
My father and I are very similar people. We love and respect each other, but beyond a point we don’t interfere in each other’s lives either. It’s only human to make mistakes. Whatever the issue, it makes no difference to me.

Does your father’s judging Indian Idol 3 bring the competition home?
He hopes for my show to be a success and I hope the same for him. But TV rivalries hardly matter to us.

You have a diploma in English contemporary music. You seem to have more on your mind.
My secret ambition is to launch myself as an English singer. That’s why the course.

'I am a surprise package'
14 May, 2007 l 0452 hrs ISTlTIMES NEWS NETWORK

SMS NEWS to 8888 for latest updates

How did you end up as the host of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa?

Santosh Sharma approached my dad with this offer. Probably he was the only person who remembered that Uditji’s son must have grown up by now because everyone I know keeps thinking that I am still 12. He asked my dad how old I was. I met him and when he asked me whether I would be the host on the show, I thought why not?

Did your dad have a role to play in your getting the part?

I think Santoshji wouldn’t have approached me if I had not done anything earlier. I am not the typical newcomer. I have already sung and acted in a few films earlier. I think I was pretty talented as a kid. Now, of course, I have become much more modest. Obviously my dad’s name has contributed to a certain extent. You cannot deny that. After all, my dad is the Amitabh Bachchan of the music industry.

What if you come face-to-face with critics who feels you are being promoted by your dad?

I’ll just turn around and tell them, ‘I take that as a compliment’. The fact is if you are talented, your actions will speak for you. How can I be even compared to a Shaan or Sonu? I think it will be degrading for them. The truth is I try to follow them to a certain extent. That should cut off the comparison. And I am not trying to do things the way they had. Don’t judge me by two episodes. Maybe 10 years down the line, you can compare me with someone who is 30. There is no point in comparing me with someone who is much senior to me.

What about acting?

I have already worked in the industry for 8 to 10 years. I don’t want to become a playback singer an actor. I am not only talented as a singer. I agree that singing is my life, my priority. I love composing songs. But let’s say Aditya is a singer plus a surprise package.

Haven’t you been getting acting offers?

I have been bombarded with offers. But I don’t think I have to announce right now what I want to do in future. Also, I don’t think I am ready for playback singing. I would rather sing one song and be happy about it than sing four songs in a day and then analyze how it could have been sung. And I don’t just want to do commercial stuff just for the heck of it. As far as acting is concerned, I can’t do the roles of a 30 or a 45-year-old. I am not one who is 19 and looks older. I can’t even grow a full beard. So the roles that I will be offered are pretty limited and getting good offers on top of that will be even rarer.

Do you feel you would have stood a chance if you had to compete with other contestants at this musical talent hunt?

I think I would have won the contest with my hardwork. I would have made the judges and audience believe that I have it in me.

What about being treated like a star son?

I am not a star. I am Aditya and I like to be treated that way. Though I am one of the stars of the show, it is my job to see that the contestants are comfortable.

And how close are you to your dad?

We don’t spend much time together. But everytime we do, it is much appreciated. I think he has realised that I am a xerox copy of him.

Do you share stuff?

We share our problems because you always have someone to share your happiness with.

And how did you handle things when your dad had to face the controversies?

Thankfully I was in London so that took care of things. But otherwise also, it made no difference to me. It is his life after all. To be very honest, I still don’t know what happened.

And you are not bothered?

As long as my dad is fulfilling his responsibilities as a father, I am not bothered about what he did earlier. Yes, if it was another son involved, then I might have taken it up with my dad. Or if I see my mom crying, then it might have been an issue. But as long as I see my parents happy and his wife not being bothered about the entire fracas, who am I to ask him anything?

“I have found the girl of my dreams”– says Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007 host Aditya Narayan

Aditya Narayan , the cute and charming host from Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007 is already a rage amongst the girls. Having trained in “Contemporary English Music” from London, Aditya is enthralling the viewer’s not only with his voice but also with his charming good looks. And the young gun has found another admirer in none other than the legendary Asha Bhosale. Asha Ji who is the current judge of the show was so impressed with Aditya that she dedicated a Nepali song to Aditya since he is half nepali. The song’s lyrics conveyed a message that the person in question is very good-looking. This took Aditya on a completely different plane altogether. Not able to mask his ecstasy at being admired by the one person he had always worshipped, a slightly embarrassed and extremely elated Aditya then exclaimed to Asha Ji that he doesn’t need any other girl in his life since he had already got the girl of his dreams to compliment him!!

New Kid on the Box
Tele-tubbies switch on to Aditya Narayan
Jaskiran Kaur

You can see that he’s been groomed extremely well, tutored to walk the talk, seasoned to suit the style, fashioned to look fashionable. He must have been a tad irritating as a boy of 10, but at 19, Udit’s son, Aditya Narayan is at his charming best. So much so, that he sparkles and shines through those set-wet spiked hair and pearly-white smile.

He still has another year to graduate in English contemporary Music from the UK, but that can wait for the brand-new host of the much glorified Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007 - the dramatic vishwa-yudh. Drama is what our industry is made up of,” Aditya (in town with radio partner Big 92.7FM) ticks on reality check. “Nothing’s staged. It’s the music directors who are extremists. Either they’ll jump for joy and hug you, or they’ll shout and curse. That’s the way it is...no singer is welcomed into the studios with jhappis and garlands,” he quips. Most of the times, this rule of the whip and tongue works. “The singers work harder,” experience speaks! What you need to understand, adds the young gun, is that these reality shows are merely a platform. “The winners get so absorbed in the star status that they fail to understand that it’s just a platform where they are the people’s fancy for that moment. This is just the beginning, you’ve got a push, now you have to go look for work, no one will come to you.” For Aditya, the only winning combination is hard work. “Quality always wins over quantity,” he uses his gyan to motivate and also put the fear of God in the contestants. As he takes over the reigns from his predecessors, Sonu Nigam who was all of 21 when he was the host and then, Shaan, Aditya is confident of his talent. “They had their own style, and I’ll get my own,” he focuses on the youth flavour that’s going down well with the audiences. Does having Udit as a dad help? “Star status rescues you only two three times, and I have exhausted my quota,” he winks. But with a keen interest in English music - he’s pretty impressed with the variations it has, and age on his side, life has just begun. “So there are no future plans, just the belief that I’ll do well.” To new beginnings.

Aditya Narayan: New Sa Re Ga Ma Pa challenge host on Zee

4 05 2007

He made his debut in playback singing as a ten-year-old with veteran Asha Bhosale in 1995 in the blockbuster movie ‘Rangeela’ about tension of going to school and drinking milk.

Child singer Aditya Narayan, son of well-known playback singer Udit Narayan, later went on to act in films like ‘Pardes’ and ‘Jab Pyar Kissi Se Hota Hai’ as a child artist.

The 20-year-old singer now will host the Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, which goes on air from tonight.

In an interview to UNI, Aditya says he has followed the programme which has been synonmous with Zee TV’s programming for more than a decade when playback singers Sonu Nigam and Shaan hosted it in two different seasons.

”I believe in being myself. Even Sonuji and Shaanji followed this concept when they hosted the show. I would like to continue that legacy,” the youngster said.

After having shot four episodes and bonding well with the participants so far, Aditya says it is challenging for him to anchor the show which includes panel of judges like music composers Himesh Reshamiya, Vishal-Shekhar, Bappi Lahiri and Ismail Durbar.

”I was a little nervous on the first day,” he admitted.

”I began shooting since last week. Producers of the programme approached my father asking how old I was. They said they were looking for a new and young face. After discussions with my father, I signed the dotted line as the anchor,” he said.

Aditya has just completed a diploma in English Contemporary Music from London and earlier learnt classical music from pandit Satyanarayan Mishra. When asked about the clash of Indian Idol on Sony TV which also goes on air from tonight where his father is one of the judges, Aditya said ”My father is very happy with my decision to be the anchor for the show. My father had come to wish me on the second day of the shoot.” Aditya’s young, fresh look and clothes have been designed by Narendra Kumar. For the first time jeans and cargos are being worn by a Sa Re Ga Ma Pa anchor.

Aditya says he loves to eat, sleep and work out. ”I am a fitness freak and am passionate about video games. I like to play the latest games. I also enjoy watching TV and films and would like to work with Jiah Khan,” he said.

”I have been signed for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa for a year,” he added.
