Jermaine to rock with Adnan

During his trip, he will also finalise the concept video of the album. Sources say, Jermaine’s trip has been kept under wraps due to security reasons. The one thing Michael Jackson’s older brother wishes to do on his trip is to see the Taj Mahal. Says Bhushan, “Jermaine and Adnan wanted to collaborate for a long time now. Also Jermaine wants to connect with Michael’s fans here. We could have recorded the song and shot the video abroad, but he wanted to come to India. He knows that Michael was hugely popular here. He is also aware that Michael had come to Mumbai. It’s also an emotional journey for him.”

Adnan Sami - Kabhi To Nazar Milao

Kabhi To Nazar Milao Lyrics

kabhi toh nazar milao
kabhi toh kareeb aao
jo nahin kaha hai
kabhi toh samajh bhi jaao
hum bhi toh hai tumhaare
deewane ho deewane

dil ye chahe teri zulfein chuum lun
sochta hoon aur tumse kya kahoon
tumse kya kahoon kya kahoon
koi faisla toh kabhi toh samajh bhi jaao
hum bhi toh hai tumhaare
deewane ho deewane
kabhi...

Pakistan Magazine

The teenage son of singer Adnan Sami Khan talks about his forthcoming album and his relationship with his long-estranged father.

Even at the young age of 15, Azaan Sami Khan has a discerning, motivated look about him. He has unruly hair and baby fat that hasn’t yet shed off, but his bespectacled, intelligent eyes speak volumes for his maturity as an individual. As the son of actress Zeba Bakhtiar and musician Adnan Sami Khan, Azaan is, of course, not your average teenager. During his childhood, he weathered his parents’ tumultuous divorce and subsequent prolonged custody battle - experiences that must have left long-lasting scars. Still, he seems to be none the worse for wear as he has recently been signed by Sony Music India for his debut album, an album that will mark him as the world’s youngest composer and singer.

It has become quite the order of the day for children to want to follow in their celebrity parents’ footsteps. In Bollywood, star kids have taken over almost completely with every big banner movie boasting the name of a Ranbir Kapoor or an Abhishek Bachchan or even a desperately-floundering-for-a-hit Fardeen Khan. Closer to home, we have Neelo’s son Shaan, Amanat Ali Khan’s son Shafqat Amanat Ali and Abid Ali’s daughter Iman Ali amongst the glitterati. Since he has spent his entire childhood estranged from his musician father, it is surprising though that Azaan opted for a career in music rather than one in acting, a la his actress mother.

“I’ve met my father for the first time in 10 years,” admits Azaan. “During these years, I had no contact with him whatsoever. Still, his musical influence was there. My mother saw that I was interested in music and always encouraged it. I have been receiving vocal training from a very young age and composed my first song when I was seven. At age 13, I directed and composed the music for a short film called Meri Kahani, a movie that was screened at the South East Asian festival in Goa. This was when I realized that music was truly my calling and this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My mother’s influence is also there - I eventually want to delve into acting, directing and dancing as well!”

Now that he has reunited with his father in Mumbai, Azaan is not only getting to know Adnan Sami better but also feels that he is learning a lot from the talented musician. “Living with my father is a learning experience,” he says. “I couldn’t meet him earlier because of court cases but from now on, I am going to be shuffling back and forth between Pakistan and India. He has taught me a lot and feels that I am now ready to go public. My album will be launched in India and hopefully, simultaneously in Pakistan, by Sony Music. People who have heard it so far have more or less liked it. They have also been surprised that my sound is so different from my father’s.”

He may sound different but Azaan admits that the opportunities granted to him have mainly been due to his celebrity father. “But that also puts the burden on me of living up to people’s expectations,” he reasons. “The audience may listen to the album once because they are curious to hear Adnan Sami’s son but they will only hear it again and again if they like it. I hope that people realize that my father started his career when he was 24 while I am just 15. I can’t possibly sound as mature or sing as romantically as him!”

Azaan, it seems, is, understandably, in awe of his multi-talented father. “My father is a well-respected musician in India and everybody I have met through him over here has been very friendly and genuine. Despite this, if I could, I would have wanted my first album to debut in Pakistan. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a very enthusiastic response from Pakistani music companies whereas I was welcomed in India. My father encountered the same attitude years ago when he wanted to release

Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao in Pakistan. The album was then eventually released in India and became a huge success. As musicians, sometimes we just don’t have any option but to launch our music in India, where people are more appreciative and receptive to new ideas. It doesn’t mean that we have forsaken our loyalty to our nation. I am a Pakistani and I am proud of it. A lot of the songs in my album have been recorded in Pakistan and have been written by Pakistani lyricists.

Similarly, my father isn’t an Indian national - he still has a green passport and he says that every time he goes on stage, Pakistan goes on stage with him.” Quite the besotted son, Azaan fails to mention that his father did apply for Indian citizenship in 2001 but failed to acquire it.

Nevertheless, in the words of Lata Mangeshkar, “Music knows no boundaries” and if Azaan’s first album is a success, it will be a proud moment for Pakistan. Following the footsteps of Adnan Sami, Azaan says that he has a sense of how different instruments work, even though the keyboard is the main instrument he plays. He has been signed up as music director for a few Indian movies, one of them directed by Priyadarshan and due to be released this December. His album debut is planned for January 2010.

`Michael Jackson wanted me to cook tandoori chicken for him'
Adnan Sami on MJ, Mumbai city and a love story gone wrong

Today is the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror attacks and your video with Jermaine Jackson, `Let's go to Mumbai city...', raises a toast to the city's neversay-die spirit.

Would you believe it, that fateful night last year, I was on my way to the Taj Mahal Hotel for a meal.
Halfway through, I had to turn back.

It was only later that I discovered that terrorists had laid siege.

What happened was traumatic but I'm glad we had the strength to overcome it. In fact, the last caption in the song sums it up beautifully: We may not have bulletproof jackets but our spirit is bulletproof.

The city is my home now. And in the years that I've been living here, I've seen it battered by floods, bomb blasts and the terror attacks. Each time, it has risen to the occasion with a resilience that is uniquely Mumbai.
You seem to demonstrate the same resilience, bouncing back after every adversity.
(Smiles) Yeah, I'm as dheet (stubborn) as Mumbai.

What's your take on Mumbai as seen in Slumdog Millionaire?

It was a wonderful picture that depicted a side of the city we've rarely seen from up close. But the best part of the movie was the soundtrack. I've been working with AR Rahman but more about that later. For now, let's talk about my new album, Ek Ladki Deewani Si.

Such a beautiful title and apt for a singer-composer whose songs spell romance, yet your own love story has gone horribly wrong.

(Sighs) Sometimes when things don't happen the way you'd wish them to in real life, you turn to creative pursuits to channelise your frustrations, mirror your fantasies and idealise your dreams. Picasso, Beethoven and Ghalib had turbulent romantic lives too but who remembers that now? We only remember the legacy they left behind. It would be presumptuous and arrogant of me to pit myself alongside these greats but I'm hopeful that one day my work too will take precedence over everything else.

But can you forget or forgive your estranged wife Sabah for taking you away from your father in his last moments?
I can forget everything else but not this. (Breaks down) I got just 15 minutes with my dad that last day, I wish I'd had a little more time.

Sorry to bring that up. Let's talk about your son Azaan who is all set to turn composer with Bum Bum Bole that's gearing up for a Christmas release...

(Smiles) I'm so proud of him and the majority of his music.
Is it anything like yours?

No, and I wouldn't want it to be either. I've never entered a studio when he's inside recording. I want his music to have its own identity.

You've not had a big hit since Salaam-eIshq's `Purani jeans...' Hasn't that set you back by a few paces?
Not at all, I do my bit with heart. If the song or the score works, it's wonderful. If it falls short of expectations, at least there's the satisfaction of knowing that I gave it my best shot. You must be swimming in your purani jeans now?

(Laughs) I'm glad you made me laugh after the tears. Four of me could fit into that old pair of jeans now. But I still love that song. Hopefully there will be more like it. Salman (Khan) and I have been working on some wild ideas. And when do we see you on screen, as a hero?

Very soon, may be six months from now. We've locked the script finally. I didn't want anything clichéd.
Recently, when shooting for the video with Jermaine Jackson near the Gateway of India, reportedly you were almost swept away?

Not swept away, but yes, I injured my left arm and broke my right forefinger. We were racing ahead on a speedboat and the sea was rough. A huge tide came along and toppled me. But I'm fit and fine now.
How closely does Jermaine resemble his brother?

What impressed me about Michael was his humility, his generosity of spirit and his openness to new ideas, that holds true for Jermaine too. It was an honour and absolute pleasure to work with him.
Will the album you were planning with MJ happen now?

It will, with the Jackson 5. It will be our tribute to our lost brother. Michael and I were constantly bouncing ideas, back and forth.

Unfortunately, before any of them could take shape, he was gone. I was supposed to attend that last concert.
Eventually, I had a special screening of the movie, This Is It! It is a beautiful tribute, like our video, to the spirit of MJ who left behind a rich legacy in music and dance. He was in the league of John Lennon and Elvis Presley. It's unfortunate that we lost him so soon. He still had so much left to give. Let's forget everything else and celebrate his music.

One special memory you have of him?
(Smiles) Michael turning to me and saying,, "Can you please cook tandoori chicken for me?" And did you?
Yes and he relished it. He was a small eater but he loved good food.

Adnan's 'Ek Ladki Deewani Si' focuses on love ballads
Indo-Asian News Service
Thursday, December 10, 2009 (Mumbai)

Adnan Sami returns to non-film music after a gap of five years with his latest album Ek Ladki Deewani Si, which comprises mostly love songs. It also boasts of a track by international pop star Jermaine Jackson, brother of late music legend Michael Jackson.

The album opens with Ek Ladki, the title track. It is foot-tapping but there is some resemblance to Sami's previous tracks, which gives the song a heard-before feel. On the whole, an average song.

Up next is "Lets go to Mumbai city" that also features Jermaine Jackson. The song's video is currently doing the rounds of TV channels. To make it an amalgamation of Indo-western influences, both Indian and western instruments are used. However, apart from the international connect, the song offers nothing great. Neither is it bad nor is it brilliant.

Then there is Mehfooz, which is a slow, melodious love ballad. It is intense and very well sung by Sami. The composition generates interest and proves to be a plus point for the album. The song has been arranged and programmed by composers Salim-Sulaiman.

Next in line is Tu salamat rahe, a song that brings forth the saxophone, an instrument not heard often these days. This mushy offering is an above average song and will be liked by many for its composition.

Then we have another romantic track in Tujhe dekha, though this one offers nothing extraordinary. The song, which has electronic beats in the background, is a duet with Tulsi Kumar.

Sharmili has a long musical prelude before the lyrics are heard. There is a certain punch in the song that makes it appealing. It is simple and very likable.

Laila is a totally avoidable song. It is fast-paced and has Arabic influences. But it fails in holding the interest of the listener.

Finally there is Chalo, a beautiful and mesmerising song that has jazz influences. It is pleasing to the ears and wonderfully sung by Sami. The love song is very appealing with its soft orchestration and makes one want to hear it again and again.

Sami's new album is essentially an ode to people in love as it consists mainly of romantic tracks, which has been his forte.

My Name Is Khan - Music Review

Short of expectations

By Usha Lakra
Sat, Jan 09, 2010

The wait is going to be over. The Shahrukh Khan and Kajol starrer My Name Is Khan will release soon. Great expectations are being attached not just to the film, but also its music. After all it’s a film by Karan Johar, who is known for including soulful tunes in his flicks.

So, Karan along with music composers Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and writer-turned-lyricist Niranjan Iyengar have come up with the songs of ‘My Name Is Khan’.

Richa Sharma breaks into the song Sajda, indeed her career’s best. The track is captivating and easily manages to sway you by its sheer verve. The song not only belongs to Richa but also to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan who in his sufiana andaz touches a few heart-rending notes. And then there is singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan balancing the higher pitch of the other two singers. The song deserves a place in your personal collection.

After ‘Sajda’, it’s ‘Khuda’. Noor-E-Khuda appears a situational track in the voice of singers Shreya Ghosal, Adnan Sami and Shankar Mahadevan. Talking about the song, it’s a fine fusion with a bit western, sufi and bhakti elements. The track, mainly set on the guitar and tabla, is not only balmy but stirs you up. Though not typical, the number bears a clear stamp of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

‘Eyes’, they say, ‘are the windows to your soul’ and very deservedly the optical sensory organ often gets lot of attention and praise in Bollywood songs. Tere Naina, thus, is no different. However, the song lacks good lyrics, but continues to add to the rhythm of the album. A semi qawwali, this song doesn’t have much to offer.

After listening to Allah Rahem which is not a bad song, one might feel the album is getting a bit monotonous. Again the same tabla-dholak beats, but ‘Allah Rahem’ by Rashid Khan is an intriguing piece and the holy chants Maula hi Rahem keeps resonating in your mind. Worth listening if you are in a sombre mood.

Then comes the ‘My Name Is Khan’ theme music. I liked this instrumental piece; it tickles the senses, is captivating and doesn’t sound overtly sensitive.

It’s not, Rang De Basanti but Rang De Aman Se Aasman, the last song of the album, is a major let-down. Why so? Well, it clearly has a lot of similarities with the song Mitwa from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna; in fact, sounds like ‘Mitwa Part 2’.

Pakistani band Strings have done an above average job in My Name Is Khan theme song that haunts with its somber music.

Well, apart from ‘Sajda’, no other song truly puts you under a spell. And come to think of it, the album belongs to a movie by Karan Johar. The film might storm the silver screens but can’t say the same about the music. The tracks may suit the situations in the movie but fail to lure us, the music buffs.

Not a bang-up job.
Rating - 6/10

Adnan pays tribute to Mumbai

Ek Ladki Diwani Si

Adnan Sami

Pakistani singer Adnan Sami says his forthcoming album "Ek Ladki Diwani Si" is a tribute to the Mumbai city.

"Mumbai has gone through lots of stuff but it has never stopped... The city kept moving and that is something very, very unique," Adnan told reporters at a radio station where he came to promote his album.

There is song in the album titled "Lets go to Mumbai City" and Jermaine, brother of late pop legend Michael Jackson, has also lent his voice for the song.

"It is basically a romantic album, but this particular song is on Mumbai."

Asked how he roped in Jermaine for the song, Adnan said: "He wanted to sing with me. He made a song 'Lets go to crystal city' but I said make it 'Lets got to Mumbai city' and he immediately jumped on the idea."

Adnan Sami to make his acting debut

Thursday, February 4, 2010
By: Subhash K. Jha, Bollywood Hungama

Adnan Sami

It's finally happening. The crisis-ridden life of Adnan Sami is finally turning a gentle corner. And he's ready to take that long-delayed plunge into acting. The project, it is reliably learnt will feature Adnan in an unexpected role. Even more unexpected is the fact that Adnan will be directing the untitled film which is expected to have three leading ladies.

The film with a screenplay co-written by Adnan is expected to roll later this year. It was to start in February 2010 but got delayed because of Adnan's marriage this week. Says Adnan, "I'd have actually started my acting career long ago if all this sh**t hadn't happened in my life. My personal battles took priority. Now that I'm out of it I am launching my production with me in the lead."

Speaking on his acting debut Adnan says, "I wanted to play a man who did things I didn't do. The whole point of acting is to assume personalities that you cannot be in your own life." So we probe Adnan to know what he's playing. "I play an impostor, a con-man, a man with an angelic face who has a dark sinister side to his personality."

Adnan's dinner with Pakistani PM

On Monday morning Adnan Sami and his wife Roya flew to Islamabad to meet the Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and dine with him.

Adnan claims his wife and the PM hit it off instantly though they were meeting for the first time. The trio discussed everything but politics that night.

About more important things, primarily food, Adnan was all praises. “The menu,” he says, “Was incredible. We started with mushroom soup, followed by a smoked keema and a very traditional mushroom pulao. Then we had fried fish, lobsters, karela and phirni and gulab jamun for dessert.”

Apparently, Gilani went to Adnan’s ancestral home in Islamabad the next day for lunch. Roya cooked a traditional Afghani pulao, while Adnan prepared Peshawari mutton.

Adnan calls the PM “quite a foodie” but holds a grudge, “Gilani saab seemed to like Roya’s pulao more than my mutton.” Well, there’s something burning and it’s not the food.
