Post Re: Aishwarya Rai

08.Jan.2007

Keep off my private life, please: Abhishek

It’s been almost a year since the first reports of Abhishek Bachchan seeing Aishwarya Rai emerged in the media. And recent appearances of the two together have only added to the popular belief that romance is on and marriage is on the cards. Even the date of the two taking the saat pheras has apparently been fixed for February 19.

That question is first on my mind when I meet him for a Q and A at the business center of Taj Land’s End, where he’s doing interviews for Guru, his forthcoming film, with Rai again.

Your appearances with Aishwarya Rai have fuelled speculation that you two are getting hitched.

What does it have to do with my film anyway, may I ask?

It’s got everything do with you.

I don’t understand how it’s anybody’s concern. That’s my personal life and I’d like to keep it like that.I share my professional life with the entire world gladly, and I enjoy that.

I am what I am because of the audience and fans. As far as my personal life is concerned, I’d like to keep it private because I don’t think it concerns anyone else. As and when there’s anything to say, I’ll be the first person to say it.

Being a public figure, there’s a lot of curiosity. Besides, you’re also the most hot-n-happening eligible bachelor in tinsel town.

Fair enough. You can ask the question. My answer is that’s my personal life and I don’t think it’s anybody’s concern.

Guru is said to be based on Dhirubai Ambani’s life. Since Anil Ambani is a family friend, did you ask him for his inputs?

That’s media speculation. There’s nothing like that. Guru is a work of fiction, like all other works of fiction; it is also inspired by reality. So it’s not just one particular person the film is based on. Many great people have inspired.

Mani has never said it’s based on any person. But if you have a name as a reference point, it does help in giving the realistic touch to the fictitious character.

Mani said it’s a fictitious story. What his inspiration is, that’s his prerogative. It would be very rude of me to ask him. Many great people serve his inspiration in this rags-to-riches story. We did work on the character, its graph and pitch before beginning filming. We didn’t want to figure out the character of Gurukant Desai on the sets. Otherwise it would be difficult to make this film. Once we were all ready, we began shooting the film.

Having worked with Mani Ratnam in Yuva, it must have been easier working with him the second time round.

He’s going to give me a tougher job the next time. Mani’s not going to make your life easier and give you something very demanding. But there’s a level of comfort. That’s about it. It’s a new film with a new character, and required a new approach to it. Not a film that you can take frivolously.

You had to put on weight to portray the character of Guru. How difficult is it to juggle when shooting another film about the same time and losing it all again?

I try and do one film at a time. We started Guru, shot it chronologically and finished it soon. Working on one film at a time helps take care of whatever problems we might face during production. I’m still trying to lose weight. I had put on 11 kilos for the character, as Mani wanted.

After the shooting of Guru was over, I set about working on what look is required for the next film. Currently I’m shooting for Drona, so this look.

Dhoom 2 is seen more as Hrithik Roshan’s film than yours.

I was given a role to do; I did what I was asked to do. They made the film they wanted to make. I keep saying that it’s not about being the best in the film, but being part of a good film you can be proud of. I don’t worry about being overshadowed.

It’sheard that there was a disagreement between you and your childhood fried Goldie Behl after Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai. Apparently, Aadesh Shrivastav influenced a patch-up.

Goldie is one of my closets friends; he’s family for me. There were never any problems between us. When Goldie was ready to make a film, he narrated the script to me. I liked it. Drona has the potential to be a very exciting film.

What stops you working with Rakeysh Mehra. You were supposed to do Delhi 6. What happened?

Problem is that it has been happening with Rakeysh and me for the past 10 years. Last minute scheduling problems came up. Rakeysh waited over a year for the dates, which I couldn’t accommodate. As a friend, it would be unfair on my part to keep him waiting any longer. There were also casting upheavals in Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay.

From playing Veeru to opting out, you’re now doing the Mehbooba mehbooba item song.

It was an issue of dates. Its working out fine now, I’m doing it. It’s an exciting film to be a part of.

Lastly, is the album Vishal-Shekhar were planning with you still on?

Vishal-Shekhar are not planning an album with me, I’m planning an album with them. It’s an idea I, Rohan Sippy and Vishal-Shekhar discussed during the making of Bluffmaster.

We were very happy with the rapport we struck while working on the Right here right now track. We’re hoping to complete the album by next month and release it sometime in the middle of this year

The World's Most Beautiful Woman?

It's Aishwarya Rai, Queen of Bollywood

Aishwarya Rai

(CBS) Who is the most beautiful woman in the world? Half a century ago, Hollywood would have presented her to us. Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman or perhaps Elizabeth Taylor.

But today? Correspondent Bob Simon reports the woman who currently holds the title, at least according to thousands of Web sites, Internet polls and even Julia Roberts, is someone you've probably never heard of.

Her name is Aishwarya Rai, and she is an actress living and working in Bombay, India. The reigning queen of Indian cinema, and also a classically trained dancer, Rai has starred in 24 films over the last seven years.

That may seem like a lot of movies, but Bollywood, India’s film capital, is famous for churning out more movies a year than Hollywood. Three new films are produced and distributed worldwide every day, attracting a global audience of 5 billion people. That’s twice the reach of Hollywood.

The reason Bollywood films have such universal appeal is because they’re squeaky-clean. There are no S** scenes, not even kissing. Every time you think someone’s going to do it, they'll burst into song instead.

"I'd assume that's really a reflection of our society," Rai says, when asked to explain the films' modesty. "Of course people kiss and of course people have a very healthy love life. This is the land of the Kama Sutra. But nevertheless, in our society you don't really see people around the street corner kissing or being extremely, overtly, physically demonstrative publicly. They do it privately but not publicly."

Unlike some of her Hollywood counterparts, Rai's very much like the women she portrays: wholesome, dutiful and deeply religious. So much so, she insisted we visit her favorite temple for this interview. It’s more than 200 years old and every week more than 100,000 people come from all over India to make offerings and pray to Lord Ganesh, the half-elephant/half-man Hindu god of happiness.

At the temple, Rai started attracting more worshippers than Lord Ganesh.

She says being treated as sort of a goddess in this way, "makes me feel guilty. I'll be very honest. When there's a distraction at the place of worship I kinda get a bit guilty. And I kind of say, 'Lord, forgive me. This isn't intended.'"

Despite the attention, Rai says she doesn’t think much about the way she looks.

"I am really OK with the way I look, It's fine," she says. "All this is transient. I mean, it's really, you know, it changes with time, and that's the external."

Breaking News

(CBS)

Rai never dreamt of being an actress. She grew up in a strict middle-class home, the daughter of a merchant marine and a writer. She was an "A" student on track to becoming an architect, until the “Miss World” pageant came along. She entered because, she says, she wanted to change the way the world sees India.

Rai explains that, "for me, it went beyond being a beauty queen. For me, it was about being the 20-year-old girl from India on international platform and a lot of people actually would assume that I wasn't even educated in India because of the way I'd speak. And they'd be like, 'Have you studied in India? Do you actually speak English out there?' and, I was like, 'This is so interesting that so many people know so little about my country.' and this is exactly what I wanted to do when I set out on this little mission in my head."

At age 21, Rai became Miss World. It didn’t take long after that for her to become the brightest star in Bollywood. Now 30, she’s still a traditional Indian girl - which, by the way, means she still lives with her parents.

"By virtue of my job, I’m traveling," she explains. "You get to spend very little time with your family. We hardly get to meet each other except on the one odd day we really get to spend time, have dinner together. And that's rare, and we cherish it."

Still, Rai considers herself an independent woman, and she doesn’t have anything to prove. She’s an astute businesswoman who negotiates her own contracts, including endorsements for L’Oreal, Coca-Cola and DeBeers diamonds.

She is not only one of the wealthiest women in India, but Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people on the planet. When she’s seen in new clothes, it invariably sparks a new fashion trend. Choosing what to wear, she says, is not so much about caring as it is, "just about being open to life and trying different things out."

Right now for Rai, trying different things means going to Hollywood. She’s already got several films lined up. Her first is from the director of "Bend it Like Beckham." It's called "Bride and Prejudice," and it’s a very proper film. But eventually, in Hollywood, India’s “good girl” is bound to run up against something of a cultural hurdle: kissing men on the big screen.

"We'll cross the bridge when we reach it," Rai says. "But yeah. We - let's see. We'll work on the story, work on the scene. I'll work on the part and, and let's see."

Would an onscreen kiss create a scandal for Rai back in India? "It would definitely be a topic of discussion," she says. "They're gonna enjoy it."

Sure, there are people in India who resent sharing their star with America. But, Rai notes, "then again there are so many Indians who have expressed so much of pride. They look at this as such a positive possibility. Because there really hasn't been that strong a representation of the Indian in Hollywood."

With Rai in the vanguard of an Indian invasion, that could change. Is Hollywood ready?

"Someone said to me this week that you are a Greek goddess with the soul of an Indian. What is the finest complement you have ever received? The one that touched you the most," Simon asks Rai.

"Well, when people call me real. I love it. And it has a lot of meaning," says Rai. "It means a lot to me and it's touching. People would see that and acknowledge it."

And one last question -- one that every man watching is going to want to know. Does she have a steady boyfriend?

"That's for the autobiography," says Rai, laughing.

Aishwarya Rai Biography

Many are green with envy when they think of the green-eyed Aishwarya Rai, who was born November 1, 1973, in Mangalore, Karnataka, India. Her beauty and charm made her a natural for the entertainment business. She began modeling by the time she was in high school but continued to focus on her studies. She excelled in school and intended on studying science in college. Instead, she decided to focus on modeling and was featured on advertisements for several prestigious companies, including Pepsi. In 1991, Rai, nicknamed Ash, won the Ford Supermodel Contest. She was later featured in Vogue magazine. Three years later she was crowned Miss World 1994 and soon after was receiving offers to star in films.

Eventually becoming "The Queen of Bollywood," Rai proved that she was not only beautiful but she could also act. Her 1997 performance in Iruvar was met with critical acclaim, and she received a best female debutant award for Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. In southern India, she gained recognition for Jeans (1998) and Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000). She won a best actress Filmfare Award for her performance in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. She also garnered rave reviews for her role in Hamara Dil Apake Paas Hai.

As of 2005, Rai was the highest paid actress in Bollywood.
Aishwarya Rai's striking beauty might make her seem an obvious fit as a model, but the truth is that India's 1994 Miss World winner originally took up modeling as a part-time job to get her through school. She was studying to be an architect, but due to her obvious talent on-stage and in front of the camera, -- most notably in a wildly popular Pepsi campaign -- the starlet began accepting the movie offers that had been pouring in. Rai began her reign as Bollywood's favorite leading lady in the film Iruvar, following it up that same year with ...Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. They both earned her critical praise and the latter brought her a Best Female Debutante Award. More awards would follow, including Best Actress by Filmfare and Zee Cine for 2000s Straight from the Heart. As the actress put more and more films under her belt, her position as India's darling cemented. Her role in 2002's Devdas was especially auspicious; the movie was the most successful in Bollywood history and received a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival -- the first Bollywood film to receive such an honor. The next year found Rai making still more headway for Bollywood when she became the first Indian member of the grand jury at Cannes.

By 2004, Rai had appeared in well over 20 films in just seven years, and it was finally time for her to star in her first English-language film. The Hollywood/Bollywood crossover hit Bride and Prejudice reworked Jane Austen's classic love story -Pride and Prejudice with the Bollywood film style, bringing together Eastern and Western actors, as well as themes. The film proved to be yet another successful example in Rai's history of helping to bring India's culture and film into the world spotlight, delighting fans all over the globe. Having sampled Hollywood, Rai was now ready to make a serious foray into American films. She signed on to star with Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley in 2007's historical epic The Last Legion as well as French director Coline Serreau's remake of her 2001 film Chaos, which would cast Rai alongside Meryl Streep. The actress had no intention of abandoning the cinema of her heritage, however, and simultaneously jumped on board with Indian movies like the The Heart of India and the historical romance Jodha-Akbar -- in which she would play the title role of Mungal king Emperor Akbar's Hindu wife and queen.

By this time, Rai's success as an actress unwilling to compromise her love and devotion to her national background had made her the highest paid actress in Bollywood history. Her fame had also buffered her image as the face of India, helping bring the art of her home country into the world-consciousness through countless magazine covers in multiple countries, a listing in Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World Today," as well as Hello Magazine's "Most Attractive Women in the World" and Rolling Stone's "Hot List." Rai even joined actresses Catherine Deneuve and Andie MacDowell as a member of L'Oréal Cosmetics' Dream Team, acting as an ambassador around the world.

Ash-Abhishek puja has Varanasi agog

What were Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai up to in Varanasi?

The Dhoom: 2 pair performed a series of pujas at the holy city's famous Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Sankat Mochan temple during the early hours of Monday, November 27.

Video: Watch Ash, Abhishek in Varanasi

Abhishek and Aishwarya virtually kept the otherwise serene temple city buzzing even at the dead of the night when they went from one temple to another to perform different sets of prayers.

Heavy police deployment and a tight security ring prevented any intruders, particularly the media. However, an insider who witnessed the entire rituals at the heavily guarded Kashi Vishwanath Temple said, "The rituals began around 3 am and continued until 4:30 am."

"First, the entire family performed the mangala aarti, that was followed by the rudrabhishek puja, which is usually carried out by married couples only," he said, on condition of anonymity.

Family priest Chandramouli Upadhyaya, the first to call on the Bachchan family at the Taj Ganges hotel shortly after their arrival late Sunday night, told mediapersons, "The family was here to perform certain prayers on the [99th] birth anniversary of Amitabh's father, famous poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan."

However, when reporters asked what Aishwarya had to do with such a closed family affair, he claimed ignorance.

Bollywood's first family arrived in Varanasi by a chartered flight around at 10:20 pm on Sunday night. They were huddled into awaiting vehicles and driven into the Taj from the rear gate, to avoid inquisitive mediapersons and cameramen.

Shortly thereafter, they were visited by Upadhyaya. At around 2:30 am, senior district officials escorted the family to the Kashi Vishwanath temple, where Pandit Sitaram Shastri first carried out the exclusive mangala aarti for them, to be followed by the rudrabhishek puja.

Besides Amitabh Bachchan, his wife Jaya, daughter Shweta and brother Ajitabh were among the key persons to participate in the rituals. Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh arrived with the entourage and stood alongside the family at each ceremony.

At around 4:30 am, they left for the Sankat Mochan temple where they attended the nearly hour-long morning aarti.

All along, they remained surrounded by an extremely tight security ring of not only the local police but also the Sahara India group, who appeared to be virtually hosting the entire visit.

Finally they returned to their hotel around 6 am. While Abhishek and Aishwarya were scheduled to leave for Agra, Amitabh, Jaya and others were flying back to Mumbai at 1 pm, a local official said.

Aishwarya Rai's kiss in Dhoom 2: Too hot for India?
Aishwarya RaiDEC 3 - Actress Aishwarya Rai is under fire for a kissing scene in her latest Bollywood blockbuster.

India has spawned the erotic masterpiece the Kama Sutra, and their religious icons and artwork depict sensual couplings, celebrations of dual sexuality and exposed body parts. But their comfort level with public displays of affection are quite modest to western sensibilities.

Now, India is home to the latest internal scandal involving the stunning Bollywood actress Rai.  The news is mystifying westerners who admire Rai, thought to be one of the world's most beautiful and talented women, and who is eagerly awaited in Hollywood offerings as well.

The root of the problem is a kissing scene from a movie starring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, and has upset an Indian lawyer who has filed a criminal case against them, accusing them of obscenity, he said on Sunday to Indian news outlets.

Shailendra Dwivedi of Indore, near Bhopal, the capital of central Madhya Pradesh state, said the scene from the movie, titled "Dhoom 2," lowered the dignity of Indian women and gave an obscene message to youth.

"Bollywood actors are conveying vulgarity in the society," Dwivedi told Reuters. "These films cannot be watched with our families, they are so vulgar at times."

The Himalayan Times reports that a local court "accepted Dwivedi's petition to punish the actors and said it would hear the petitioner on December 11th."

The Indian censor board released the movie with a "parental discretion" certificate.

"A majority of Indians frown upon intimacy in public." Reports the Himalayan Times.

Sneha UllalSneha Ullal : The Aishwarya Rai lookalike
01st Feb 2005  09.09 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau

You would have noticed it for sure, if not mistaken it. The first thing that struck your mind while watching the promos of ‘Lucky - No Time For Love’? The striking similarity between newcomer Sneha Ullal and Aishwarya Rai .

Yes, Sneha looks so similar to Ash that she can be easily passed off as the former Miss World’s twin sister. And amusing is the fact that Sneha is the leading of Salman Khan in his forthcoming film ‘Lucky - No Time For Love’.

And guess what, according to the movie’s director-duo Vinay Sapru and Radhika Rao, Sneha is “entirely Salman’s discovery.”

Sapru adds, “While we were constantly on the lookout for the film’s lead heroine, Salman suggested a girl who studies in his sister Arpita’s college. She sizzled when we screen-tested her.”

Ullal, 18, a Bandra resident and student of National College, therefore landed up with the title role of the heavy-duty love saga shot in St Petersburg.

‘Lucky - No Time For Love’ is a Sohail Khan
production and is set in Eastern Europe.

Aditya (Salman) is the son of an Indian ambassador in an Eastern European country. Lucky (Sneha) is a 17-year-old local girl of the country. And the young girl is fascinated by Aditya’s charm. But the relationship is not permissible because of the age difference between the two.

Meanwhile, a Civil War breaks out in the country. Lucky lands into a severe trouble and Aditya is her only hope for rescue. But in a foreign country, Aditya finds it difficult to face all the odds. At this moment, an Intelligence guy, Colonel Pindidas Kapoor ( Mithun Chakraborty
) helps them in escaping.

Shot in Russia, ‘Lucky - No Time For Love’ has music by Adnan Sami
and is slated to hit the theatres in the summer of 2005

Sneha is also reported to be doing an emotional love story titled ‘Aryan’ opposite Sohail set against the backdrop of boxing.
