 Alisha Chinai
BOLLYWOOD BREAKS - The Life and Times of Alisha Chinai Vishwas Kulkarni | SIDE A :
There was a time when any singer who was not Lata Mangeshkar and aspired to sing pop would appear morally dubious in our society. No one could quite match up to the standards of chastity that Miss Mangeshkar had gotten us used to. Members of this clan included the likes of Kanchan (from Babla orchestra) and Sharon Prabhakar (who sang covers of Laura Branigan numbers on Doordarshan if you had no friends to hang out with on New Year's Eve). And while you didn't deem them fit for your stereo (album sales were dismal), these ladies did croon for a larger cause than say Reena Roy lip-synching to Lata Mangeshkar. Alisha Chinai cut her teeth in such a milieu and has risen like a Gujarati Phoenix since.
The pop singer has defined some of the biggest chartbusters of our times for the last 20 years, despite many brickbats and some bouquets. Aaj Ki Raat can reasonably be rated as the coolest disco hit to emerge out of Bollywood in a long time. And aside from this, there are Kajra Re (Bunty aur Babli), Dil Ko Hazar Bar (Murder), Ishq Di Gali (No Entry) and Touch Me (Dhoom2): songs that have by fluke or fortitude defined for Indipop, and for Alisha, her next curve. There have been some hard-core turkeys en route this path to popularity. Like Babydoll. But let us not forget Made in India, the most successful Indipop album ever with sales of 5 million copies.
Alisha slumped yet again when the Indipop bubble burst in the late '90s. Times got rough. And when the going gets tough, the tough go to rock shows in Pune, Patna, Panjim. Alisha like survivors of the Indipop holocaust chose this genre of fame at college festivals, compere-dom in Imphal, rock shows for oversexed teenagers; the shimmer of sponsored events designed by our nation's MBAs and event managers. Yet, what saved Alisha or rather kept her in the spotlight is a parallel Bollywood career that she has maintained - cautiously. The '80s clocked some chance hits such as Kaate Nahin Katte (Mr India) and Bappi Lahiri's Tarzan. The '90s made her officially famous. But it is in the 21st century that Alisha has emerged as someone who will stay. For long, whether you like her or not.
A broken marriage, some lovers by the by, a professional split from Anu Malik (and then a reunion) hasn't stopped Alisha from finding her breaks. The breaks are in Indipop, the breaks are on MTV, the breaks are in Bollywood. And even if Bollywood goes bust, Alisha will find another groove. It is precisely this quality that makes Alisha exactly what she always wanted to be: Madonna. Not a Gujju Madonna as she tried to be two decades ago. But a Pan-Indian Madonna. And both are in their 40s.

 Re: Alisha Chinai
SIDE B :
Alisha agrees to an interview. Actually, Bobby agrees to an interview. You call Alisha and Bobby invariably picks up the phone. "Let me check, we are currently in Baroda on a project." Ok. "How about Tuesday? Are you getting your own make-up man?" No, it's just a casual interview. Celebrating her. We want candid shots. "Okay."
On Tuesday afternoon Bobby calls, two hours before the interview. "Alisha was wondering if she can postpone the interview" No. "Okay let me call you back." Bobby calls back. "How many people are coming?" Just me and my photographer. "Alright, then forget meeting in the hotel lobby, come straight to the house at 4." Alright.
• 20k per song and no royalties. How gross is that considering we are the voices of our stars?
4 pm. We enter Alisha's Bandra pad. Bobby, a tall, gentle guy in jeans, t-shirt and sporting a pony tail opens the door. "She's getting ready for the shoot along with her stylist. Please wait in the living room." Harper's Bazaar, Tatler and Vogue are neatly arranged on the table in front of a very comfortable sofa.
A young attractive girl enters the living room. "What angles will you be taking? Who's the photographer?" Rana stands up and discusses the details with the stylist. "Hi, I'm Junelia Aguiar, I'm Alisha's stylist." So, who's doing the make-up? "Alisha does that herself."
Junelia leaves. Alisha enters wearing a black t-shirt-cum-dress with a huge gap in the chest area; it is the sort of garment that is specifically designed to reveal cleavage. Racy, frilly lingerie fringes the lower circumference of the cut circle. Alisha has streaked her hair a sandy blonde. Her lips and immaculately manicured nails are painted in the same shade. What colour is this? "Nude," says Alisha.
Rana gets inspired by Alisha's comfort with the camera to pose himself, gesticulating postures that would bring the best out of Alisha. Alisha obliges and is remarkably co-operative.
How old are you?
"How rude of you?! Really, how rude of you?! The Right Age! Timeless! Actually, make that none of your business!" she says jokingly while she continues to strike poses.
We officially start the interview even though Alisha every now and then does pout into the lens every time the photographer clicks.
"Alisha, you have been in the industry through three decades, how do you keep so fit?"
"That's because I eat healthy. I don't drink except on my birthday and other people's birthdays and I'm vegetarian except when I eat meat," says she with a naughty grin.
I don't get it. And upon querying, she says the "I'm vegetarian except when I eat MEAT," joke again, more emphatically.
How did it all start?
"It started with a small role in Alyque Padamsee's Evita. I then released some albums with HMV."
We remember Babydoll. What was up with that?
"I grew up."
What is the secret of your success?
"Hangin' in there. I am the only singer in India to have two parallel careers in the same industry. I have a successful Bollywood career and I have a rocking career as an Indipop singer. Nobody has achieved that. The secret of my success can be distilled down to four Cs and one V. Creative talent, Charisma, Chart-topping ability and Consistency. The V is for Versatility. I sing ballads, I sing mujra songs, I sing pop."
You spend a lot of time in Alibaug.
"That's true. I can't live in this matchbox of an apartment all the time!"
Alisha, they say it's lonely at the top. Do you get lonely?
"I can't deny that. But I'm also very comfortable being single. Besides, I am a firm believer of the maxim that money lasts longer than love."
So the Canadian fiancé never quite worked out, did he?
"I can't hear you. Excuse me? Hello? I don't know what you're asking me. Did that happen?"
And now you are friends with Anu Malik again. So you made up after that nasty fracas in the '90s.
"Kumarji of TIPS, with which I also have signed up, gave me a neat piece of wisdom: "In showbiz Alisha you have to pretend to love the people you hate. Get on with it! You're a professional." And I was like Yeah Man! So, we're working professionals now. Big deal."
The '90s made you and then the '90s also unmade you.
"I can't deny. It was the grimmest phase of my life. Made in India was like an anthem. I can't forget the euphoria. And then the Indipop bubble burst. Thankfully, I rode the Made in India crest and traveled all over the world. I became eponymous with its success to all NRIs across the globe. And then Bollywood happened. And I now also have a new pop album that is releasing this April."
Name?
"AC"
As in air-conditioning?
"No as in Alisha Chinai"
Cool, what's it about?
"Well, it's a big of Bhangra, a bit of breakbeat, a bit of hip hop and a lot of Alisha. It's been mixed in the UK and I've shot half a video for one of the singles already."
What's the name of the single?
"Can't reveal that. It's confidential until April."
Alisha, three decades of re-inventions. How do you have the energy?
"It's about the high you get from creating. The brickbats are part of showbiz. But the joy of singing keeps me going in the industry."
What's the worst thing about the industry?
"The pay scales. We singers are the worst paid of the lot."
How much do you get per song?
"20,000. And no royalties. How gross is that considering we are the voices of our superstars?"
But aren't Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle the Peddar Road zillionaires?
"Well, that's if you sing five songs a day for many years. Not my scene, pal. I don't sing five songs a day. And I like it that way."
Alisha Chinai. Aleesha Chinoi. Aleesha Chinai. Alisha Chinoi. Your name keeps changing. Are you like those extremely superstitious television stars?
"Ok. Get this right - once and for all. I'm so tired of my name being bastardised by the media. It is the media, people who mess with my name. My name has always been Alisha. China. I. That's how you should spell it. Just remember Alisha. China. I. And you'll never go wrong. "
Cool.

Alisha to tie the marital knot!
| Mar 2003 By ApunKaChoice Bureau
Indipopper Alisha Chinai will be marrying her Canadian beau Romel Kazzouah in the month of July.
Alisha says she met Romel in Mumbai last year and it was ‘love at first sight’ for both of them.
She describes her hubby-to-be as a gorgeous, sexy and goodhearted man.
Romel is in music business along with his uncle. He also runs a restaurant and a construction business.
What’s surprising is that the ‘babydoll’ is planning to shift to Toronto after her marriage and say goodbye to Indian pop music.

 Re: Alisha Chinai
Alisha Chinai Biography She is one of the pioneers of pop music in India and after all these years she is still around. Better known as "Indian Madonna", Alisha Chinai made Indipop history with "Made in India" along with music composer Biddhu. The song made waves at the music charts and ushered new trends in pop music thereafter.
But Alisha "Babydoll" Chinai gave in to her whimsical mood (for which she is quite infamous) and took a five-year sabbatical, which ended with another pop album "Om". It failed to do justice to the euphoria of her previous album and had to bite the dust. Quite sadly, her next album "Dil Ki Rani" too bombed owing to its poor marketing and Alisha's horrible PR.
Alisha is quite (un) popular for her "scandal child" image and hoity toity attitude. But no longer is she the bubbly, candyfloss girl of yore. Nowadays she is looking forward to her next album with music composer Sandeep Chowta. She already has 9 albums to her credit.

 Re: Alisha Chinai
"There's a misconception in the film industry that I looked down on film music. Not true! After Made In India I wanted to concentrate on building its popularity by doing a lot of stage shows. Let's face it, stage shows fetch a lot of mileage and money. I didn't want to miss out on that for playback singing. Besides, playback no longer had the clout that it did in earlier days", - Alisha Chinai
QUICK FACTS:
Occupation: pop star and filmi performer
CAREER: She is one of the pioneers of pop music in India. Her earlier albums include Babydoll, Jadoo, Aa-Alisha. She made Indipop history with "Made in India" along with music composer Biddhu. Alisha is famous for her scandalous image |

 Re: Alisha Chinai
Life after Kajra Re Ritujaay Ghosh Kolkata, March 25, 2007
Sourav Ganguly is the not the only one who silenced his critics with his comeback. She is certainly the Sourav Ganguly of the Indian music industry who made an equally successful comeback with her song Kajra re, just when her critics had just begun to erase her name from the fraternity. We are talking of Alisha Chinai, who dared to give disco a new look with her songs in Bollywood in the Eighties. Two years down the line Alisha feels her second innings as a playback singer has much more exciting and encouraging than the first one. Ask her why and she says, "I could not have done songs with such variety as I am doing now. Not you can find me singing for all genres," says Alisha and she believes the credit largely vests with today’s music directors who have spotted her talent and utilized it. "I must give credit to Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy who not only had faith in my voice but also utilized my voice for a song which most others wouldn’t have dared to," says Alisha.
The singer was in the City of Joy to attend a press conference as a part of the Indian Idol judge’s panel. Though her earlier career had earned her the tag of ‘Baby Doll’ and the ‘Indian Madonna’ but Alisha now finds herself to have changed completely.
She is satisfied that her creative satisfaction as a singer is ultimately getting fulfilled and two years down the line after Kajra re she is one of the most sought after names with hits like No entry, Aaj ki raat among others.
Versatility is the key to success and Alisha believes that is what her helped her survive in the race in Bollywood where a singer like Sunidhi Chauhan is already being tagged as the next Alisha. What has Alisha to say about this?
"She is a talented singer and she too is versatile. I have heard that music directors in the past have asked her to emulate my voice but I think every singer has his her own identity. Sunidhi has a gifted voice and her originality is her biggest strength," says the singer who is happy to notice that Indipop, which was experiencing a low acceptance level among the audience is finally back.
"Every genre has highs and lows but with artists like Shaan and Sunidhi around Indipop is there to survive for long," she says. The audiences though haven’t seen too many Indipop artists making it big in Bollywood. Alisha is one of the few among them who has made it big tough she says a lot of it depends on the music directors.
"Today’s music directors are much more versatile because they listen to all genres of music. This is why I am enjoying more than what I did two decades ago. I would have done the song Kaate nahi kaati differently had I done it today," says Alisha.
Who can forget this song of hers with Kishore Kumar. And with the sequel of Mr India already being made Alisha is excited.
"I think they should take me this time too because Mr India is incomplete without me. The only person I will miss is Kishoreda. He was one of the few who really appreciated my voice even then," says she.

 Re: Alisha Chinai
We're paid peanuts' Alisha Chinai lashes out at themusic Industry
|
| Post-Kajra re Alisha Chinai seems to be rocking or so you'd like to believe. But the singer has another story to tell. "Playback singers always get relegated to the sidelines. They continue to be underdogs of the music industry. We really need to be paid better. I've been fighting for 10 years. I've always maintained a parallel music career outside the movies. In the movie, they think they're doing me a favour. An average film star gets Rs 2 crore. A playback singer gets Rs 20-25,000. Even when a song like Kajra re becomes a runaway hit I don't benefit. We're paid peanuts," she says.
Nowadays, Alisha demands and expects her price. She says, 'Of course a lot of producers settle for a mediocre voice. I'm quite happy singing my ten songs a year. Singing less keeps my voice fresh."
Alisha is releasing another non-film album in May. One of the tracks is bound to create a stir. Alisha says, "There's a very audacious and upfront song called 'Shut Up And Kiss Me'. I hope people see it with a sense of humour. It's sexy but not raunchy. So no raised eyebrows, I hope."
Years ago Alisha had created a sensation with the song 'Sexy sexy' for Karisma Kapoor in Khuddar. The words had to be changed to appease the moralists. "I don't think we'll have to change the words this time. I hope I don't come across looking stupid. The album has been recorded completely in the UK. So it's got a crossover sound."

 Re: Alisha Chinai
Re: Alisha Chinai BackgroundHer real name is Sujata, though she has gone by Alisha Chinai (Shortened to Alisha), or Aleesha Chinoy professionally. A little known fact is that Sujata changed her name to that of her cousin's daughter Alisha (also Chinai) after she was born. Alisha Chinai (her cousin's daughter) is now a renowned fashion accessory designer in India with her label Bea Accessories. She is also known as the "Indian Madonna" (she was first known as Babydoll but an image change later resulted in the "Madonna" moniker).
CareerChinai was discovered by the famous music director and composer Bappi Lahiri. They have done many disco hits together in many films in the 80`s including Dance Dance, Commando, Guru, Love Love Love and more. She started her career with him singing for almost every famous actress, such as Smita Patil, Mandakini, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla etc. In the 90`s she turned around for other films and music directors, such as Anu Malik and Nadeem-Shravan. Later, simultaneously of playback singing, she has recorded many hits as a pop singer, with Album releases. Chinai was most famous for her 1996 single and album, titled "Made in India" which contains her most famous track "Lover Girl." Throughout her successful years, she had a number of hits in the Indian Films, including Roundhe (Pyar Tune Kya Kiya), Sona Sona Roop Hai (Bollywood/Hollywood), and the controversial Sexy turned Baby Mujhe Log Bole (Khuddar). However, her pop music career ended as her follow-up albums were less successful. After a not so good career in pop music, Alisha decided to go back to filmi music. Her comeback song was "Oh My Darling" in the Yash Raj Film flop Mujhse Dosti Karoge The movie did not do well and the song ended up being the worst song on the soundtrack. Her career resurrected on "Chot Dil Pe Lagi" (Ishq Vishk), where she teamed up with Anu Malik after stating she would never work with him again in 1995. More hits followed and Alisha came to have success again. The highlight of her career came with the song Kajra Re (Bunty Aur Babli). The song was a hit and Alisha's success grew as she won the Filmfare Best Female Playback Award.
Awards- Alisha received the prestigious International Billboard Award around the time "Made in India" came out, and also won the Freddie Mercury Award for Artistic Excellence.
- Internationally, Alisha received attention when her song "Seulement Vous" won first place at the International Song Festival "Asia 2004". It was the first victory for India in the Song Contest.

 Re: Alisha Chinai
Date:11/07/2005 Baby doll? Nah! Alisha Chinai has moved on leaving her rebellious image far behind | PHOTO: BHAGYA PRAKASH K
PROUD DESIAlisha Chinai, the Made in India brand If Indipop has got somewhere today, Alisha Chinai will certainly be among those who can take the credit. She came into the Indipop scene when it was in its infancy in the early 1980s, and lent it much visibility. Her album, Made in India with its risqué video, sold millions of copies. In recent times, she has sung a number in Bunty Aur Bubly, besides those in No Entry, Murder and Ishq Vishq. In an interview, Alisha shared some thoughts on her past and present. Madonna clearly influenced you a lot. How much of her persona do you still carry with you? That I think is a thing of the past. What I liked about Madonna was her rebellious style and break-the-rules attitude. I am also defiant and rebellious. That has been my USP and that attitude is reflected in my music. But I have moved on. I have evolved, grown up, mellowed and softened. It happens to all of us. You can't be like what you were when you started out. Was Made in India the album that brought about the change? I did a 360-degree turn with Made in India. I am proud to be an Indian and it marked the beginning of a very Indian phase. The album was a trendsetter as it led to Indians taking a fresh look at their country. That was also when new genres of music came up. How did you like playback singing even as you were bringing out solo albums? Playback singing was a great fallback. It kept me in touch with the right kind of music. I am comfortable with film music because it is all about a situation — understanding the context, learning the song and giving a performance. I got to work with a number of composers and learnt a lot. What do you think of Indipop today compared to what it was when you started out? Indipop was at its infancy when I started. The concept had taken off and was still developing. Today, it is an extremely popular genre that has a vast mix of styles such as bhangra, folk, ghazal and Sufi. Then, there are the alternative and techno styles. The industry has expanded today. Who did you want to be like in the world of singing? If I had to emulate someone's voice, it would be that of Barbara Streisand. I also like Diana Ross. I can't ever be a Lata Mangeshkar because I can never mould my voice like hers. PRASHANT G N

We're paid the pits." Music director Bappi Lahiri's discovery, Chinai initially sang disco numbers in films like ‘Dance Dance', ‘Commando', ‘Guru' and ‘Love Love Love'. In 1996, she gave the hit album ‘Made in India'. Nowadays Chinai demands and expects her price and says she is happy with the quantity of her work. "Of course, a lot of producers settle for a mediocre voice. I'm quite happy singing my 10 songs a year. Singing less keeps my voice fresh." Last year she released another non-film album, and one of the tracks titled Shut up and kiss me created a stir. Laughs Chinai, "It was a very audacious and upfront song. I'm glad people saw it with a sense of humor. It was sexy, but not raunchy. So there were no raised eyebrows." Years ago Chinai had created a controversy with the song Sexy, sexy for Karisma Kapoor in ‘Khuddar'. The words had to be changed to appease the moralists. Chinai is heavily into astrology. "My astrologer had predicted that the end of my bad phase would start with Kajra re. That song resurrected my career, thanks to Aishwarya Rai who looked awesome. To be honest, I enjoy the thought of singing for Aishwarya, Kareena Kapoor and Vidya Balan. "
