Hallucinating, Mr Malik?



Here's a novel way of getting work. Anu Malik claims to have been visited by a divine figure who asked him to score the music for Jai Santoshi Maa!

Digest this. Composer Anu Malik claims to have had a strange dream in which a divine figure appeared before him and entrusted him with the responsibility of scoring the music for Shailendra Singh's mythological film, Jai Santoshi Maa!

And, believe it or not, Malik has even decided to attribute the popularity of the numbers from Zindagi Rocks, Jaan-e-man and the soon-to-be-released Umrao Jaan to the heavenly figure he dreamt about!

Recounting the experience he says, "You may call it a co-incidence but these things do happen sometimes. I am a firm believer in God and think that God is one. Be it a dargah, mandir, church or gurudwara… I pray everywhere and believe that all paths lead to one God. I was going through a low, professionally, personally and emotionally. There were only two ways for me; either to throw in the towel or to fight it out. At such a time I saw this divine figure and it helped me to get back on my feet. I felt a surge of renewed energy and the phone call from Shailendra Singh made me believe even more in its power."

Trying to substantiate his claim, he says, "Jai Santoshi Maa will be the first film to be released after the celestial figure visited me in my dream. The music of Jaan-e-man and Zindagi Rocks is already selling well and Umrao Jaan promos have begun to elicit viewers' interest. Plus, I am much more focussed and positive than ever. The world will see a new and better Anu Malik, and all this is just due to that one divine power."

In a recent Mumbai Mirror write-up Anu Malik attributed the popularity of some of his recent soundtracks
(including Umrao Jaan!) to a divine figure that entrusted responsibility to score for some film !! Looks like that figure is either Nadeem or Shravan Bhai! Its very likely that both composers may have sought inspiration (as usual!) from some Pakistani track or perhaps another older Hindi track...just a matter of time before someone brings it to our notice!

Anu Malik is now Annu Malek

Anu Malik has finally decided to get his name spelling changed to Annu Malek in consultation with numerologist, tarot, handwriting and signatures specialist Niraj Mancchanda. According to Niraj, “Annu’s good time period has begun from his birthday 2nd November and now he will go on signing movies and will get full credit for his work"

Annu has already signed two films of which one is with Tips. Niraj further adds "Annu Malek now comes to number 32 which has the power to sway the masses. The movie Sarfarosh directed by John M Matthan had come to number 32 which was a critically acclaimed hit and the legendary V Shantaram's name also comes to number 32 ".

When we spoke to Anu umm… Annu Malek and he confirmed this. “In the movie Baazigar, I was credited as Annu Malik which turned out to be a big hit. Niraj is my childhood friend and I respect him a lot. So he told me to continue with Annu and also to change the ‘i’ in Malik to ‘e’.

Anu Malek will appear in a commercial

Music director Anu Malek will be on camera for a commercial. He will appear in an MTNL’s television commercial. He is currently shooting in Delhi for the commercial and informs that he has also composed the music for MTNL's broadband service. He will be seen in the concluding part of the commercial.

According to him the music is a fusion tune since he is merging an ethnic tune for MTNL. The tune has been composed in sync with the Indian culture. This MTNL Broadband commercial is 60 second long and will be aired on television from next month onwards.

Anu Malik & Gulzar team together



Anu Malik hasn’t been heard since his last composition for JP Dutta’s ‘Umrao Jaan’ starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai.  In a unique collaboration of sorts, he has teamed up with veteran lyricist Gulzar. He is very ecstatic that he has been chosen to compose music for a Pakistani film for which Gulzarsaab is penning the lyrics.It’s like a dream come true for him. Gulzar asked him to compose music for the Pakistani film titled ‘Tere Liye’ and without any hesitation he agreed, as it was an offer he could not turn down. The film is written by Javed Siddiqui.

Anu Malik is composing music for the first time in his career for a Pakistani film. When he heard the story of film, he was floored by it and he decided to do all seven songs as it had good scope for melodious tracks. The soundtracks comprises melodious numbers and Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik has recorded a love ballad. Anu is very happy about working with Gulzar but he was touched when Gulzar praised him after hearing the music of the film. He feels that the compliments from Gulzar are no less than an honour for him.

Anu Malik made his debut in 1981 with Poonam. He was not even 22. The son of veteran composer Sardar Malik, Anu won the National Award for J P Dutta's Refugee (2000), starring Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor.

Refugee was the second of Dutta's war trilogy. The first was Border, the music for which was also scored by Anu Malik. Who can forget the stirring Sandese aate hain and To chaloon (Border) and the melodious Panchchi nadiyan pawan ke and Aisa lagta hai (Refugee)?

Anu MalikIt was inevitable that Anu scored the music for the final film in the trilogy, LoC-Kargil, says A Ganesh Nadar:

What was your inspiration for LoC-Kargil? Was it J P Dutta's script or the sacrifices made by the soldiers?

A bit of both. I have been involved with [J P] Dutta since Border. [When] he called me over to discuss the script, the saga, valour and bravery of our soldiers came to light, as the story unfolded.

In 1999, 99 of our soldiers were shot dead, point blank. We lost 635 soldiers in Kargil.

For LoC, I was not told to outdo Border or Refugee. The emotions flow out if you are a patriotic Indian, irrespective of caste or religion. You are talking about your Indian brothers. In the heights of Ladakh and beyond, when we were eating food, they [the soldiers] were being killed.

The songs were not made to become hits, but to express the pain of the soldiers and their families.

Where were you when the Kargil war broke out in 1999?

I must have been with my family or at the studio. Maybe I was celebrating the success of a film. Nothing compared to what the soldiers were going through.

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in LoCThe year 1999 has become an important year for me knowing that I was not there [Kargil] when the war was going on. I am sure Indians all over the world feel the same. Hats off to the Indian Army.

Did you follow the events in Kargil closely ?

Yes, I did follow the Kargil war, hoping that a major war did not break out. Most Indians are concerned about their wives and children. But when I read the script of LoC, I realised that the jawans giving their lives for the country do not think of their wives and families. My thoughts and prayers go out to them.

Did that lead to a surge of patriotism that made you compose some stirring music?

The songs of Border and Refugee were from my heart. Everything that is patriotic comes from the heart. If these songs come out time and again, that shows how much I love the country.

I think it was former US President John F Kennedy that said, 'It is not what the country does for you, but what you can do for the country that is important.'

I did it for the soldiers. I made the song Sandese aate hain for the soldiers to sing in their bunkers.

Dutta told me of a jawan who died. He [the jawan] had said he wouldn't mind dying for the country. He used to sing that song.

His mother said [to Dutta], 'I don't know whether to love or hate you. My son joined the army after he saw your film [Border], and heard that song. Today, he is dead. I am happy that you are making LoC. You made him live again.'

What kind of songs did Dutta want? He is known to have a very strong personality. Did he indicate that the songs had to be different or similar from the ones you had composed for Border?

Akshaye Khanna, Sudesh Berry and Suniel Shetty in BorderHe never tells or expects. He knows I will deliver. He did not pressure me during Border or Refugee. I think we are destined to be together. Javedsaab [Javed Akhtar] gave great lyrics. The singers sang well. Dutta felt I had it in me.

For example, when the whole world turned against me, he gave me Border. And Sandese aate hain was born. It was a song that rocked the world. I deserved the National Award for Border, but got it for Refugee. It silenced all the critics. Today, when I make tunes for LoC, he believes in me. He did not talk about Border or Refugee.

How long did it take for you to compose the music for LoC?

We don't work to a time format. For example, J P Dutta calls me home, shows me the stills of what he has shot. He explains the scene to me. I go off for a month and come back with a tune.

Sometimes, he goes to Javedsaab for the lyrics. I hum the tune to him. If he doesn't like it, he just goes away. If he likes it, he records it and gets back to me.

Sandese aate hain was made in seven-and-a-half minutes. A 30-minute song in LoC was made in 30 minutes.

Sandese aate hai became the nation's anthem. Is there any song in LoC that can hold a candle to that?

[Actually] It is not good to compare. [But] I think all the songs can. Seemayein bulaye and Oh jaane wale are good. Main kaheen bhi rahoon is now rocking the nation. And Ek saathi aur bhi tha will become the anthem too.

Abhishek Bachchan and Kareena Kapoor in RefugeeLoC is the best war film I have seen in my life.

You composed your best music for Border and Refugee. What is it about J P Dutta that makes you go that extra mile?

First, the themes inspire me. Second, the faith and confidence that he has in me. I don't think I could have composed such great music for Border had he not selected it. He has a great sense of what he wants.

When I hummed a tune like this [he hums a tune], it comes from the soul. It is not a raga. Anyone can sing a raga. J P Dutta knows what he wants and he knows that I will deliver.

How different is it working with him than, say, Sooraj Barjatya (Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon), Santosh Sivan (Asoka) or Subhash Ghai (Yaadein)?

Every director has a style of his own. Subhashji and I had a wonderful time making Yaadein. In Asoka, Santosh Sivan was different as a director than as a cinematographer. Sometimes I had to fight with him because he thought that another tune was better.

I had a wonderful time with Sooraj Barjatya also while making Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. It would have been another story if the film had become a hit. I enjoy working for Rajshri Films.

I feel Dutta pushes me to new horizons. He makes me explore new areas. He sits quietly and scratches his beard. Doesn't scare me, doesn't disturb me. He never makes me feel that I will lose the film if I don't compose the music immediately. He gives me time.

Do you have any disagreements while composing the music? Do you give in to the director's point of view or vice versa?

Sanjay Dutt in LoCI persuade only if I feel it is their loss. If you are losing a great tune, it will be your loss. I would never persuade a great director. You would not be a good director if you do not have a mind of your own.

You cannot tell Dutta that this is the best tune. It shows your own insecurity, that you cannot compose a better one. I am not made like that. If you don't like a song, I will make another one. If I think it is a beautiful tune, then I will fight for it. But if they feel that I am trying to pawn off a tune, I make another.

How much of the LoC score is J P Dutta's?

He always tells me, do your score. It is entirely my score, whether it was Border, Refugee or LoC. But because he is taking that music, I would say it is his score too.

Take a song like Pyaar bhara. If he had refused to listen to that and asked for something else, I would be lost. I just hum the melodies he likes. He never asks for item songs. He never talks about trends.

Border helped you get rid of the unfair allegation of being a copycat. Does Border hold a special place in your heart?

Yes. You used the right words, 'unfair allegation.'

Border did turn the tide in my favour. Refugee also did a lot for me because the National Award is the Grammy of India. I received that from the President of India. LoC has also buried that unfair allegation.

Gurinder Chadha is making an international film, Bride And Prejudice, and has chosen me to compose the music. I must be good, that is why she chose me over the others.

Tell us about Bride And Prejudice.

Ajay Devgan and Rani Mukerji in LoCI cannot sing the tunes for you. Bride And Prejudice is one of the most beautiful and melodic films. The characters break into a song like The Sound Of Music or The Wizard Of Oz. It has been a challenging task and a major achievement to make those songs. Gurinder Chadha has a beautiful sense of humour. Together with romance, it is a beautiful film.

After Border, you have grown as composer. Do you think you have been given your worth for your work? Does it hurt you that people still treat you lightly, as if you are a Bappi Lahiri clone?

I don't think people treat me lightly. If that was the case, Shah Rukh Khan would not come to me with his films. Every young director wants to start his/her career with me. Whether it is Meghna Gulzar [Filhaal] or Farah Khan [Main Hoon Na].

Every actor and actress is identified by the songs I have given them. Like Urmila Matondkar, the Chamma chamma girl and Shilpa Shetty the Chura ke dil girl. Karisma Kapoor is known as the Sexy sexy girl and Tabu is known as the Rukh rukh girl.

Nobody takes me lightly. It is in the mind of the media. They create these labels.

Today, I choose my directors. All the directors I have worked with have come back to me. That is a great achievement. Loose talk has died a natural death. Anyone can approach Dutta. But he will have to go through Border, Refugee and LoC to reach his heart.

If anyone wants to be Anu Malik, he will have to create music for the innumerable films that I have done. I have worked with Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi to present day singers. From Amitabh Bachchan to Hrithik Roshan. From Hema Malini to Kareena Kapoor.

[The year] 2004 will be a new beginning for me.

Where do you think you will feature in the history of Hindi film music? In the first rank of composers like Naushad, C Ramchandra, Shankar-Jaikishen, S D Burman, R D Burman or below?

To compare me with the masters is not fair. But I will be remembered for films like Border. I will be remembered for my versatility. I can compose for a Virasat and a Josh. When compared with the greats, I have a long way to go.

Coming back to LoC, how difficult is it to compose music for a patriotic film as it is for, say, a romance like Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon?

Abhishek Bachchan and Esha Deol in LoCNo music is easy, whether a romantic or patriotic film. Whenever we start making a film, I am nervous. I may show attitude, but I am still a child at heart. Will I be able to please them? You have to let your mind and heart fly.

[For a patriotic film] it is tough but I try. I think of the Kargil war, or any war.

Does a score for a patriotic film always have to have a rousing, triumphant song with the mandatory regret for a fallen comrade number? Is it difficult for a composer to break out of this mould?

There is no established format. LoC is very different from Border. I go from subject to subject. Every song [I compose] is fresh.

I don't follow Kar chale hum fida jaano tan sathiyo [of Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat for inspiration]. I listen to the song. If it is good, my inspiration stops there. I create something else.

Sandese aate hai is different from Kar chale hum fida.

How do you create tunes? Do you wake up in the morning, lock yourself in a room and start composing tunes? How many hours do you spend in your music room? Do you create a bank of tunes, which you offer a director when he signs you on? Or do you work to a director's agenda? Do you also compose tunes while doing routine things?

I make my work sound easy. That is my style. I wouldn't want to tell you how I work. That's my trade secret. Many directors ask if I was walking on the streets when the tune came to me. If the song comes to you, it will.

People are surprised that Anu Malik has created this. I thank God and my hard work. When I bring God into it, people laugh at me. [But] I would not be Anu Malik without His wish.

When I get a song, I go down on my knees. Sometimes, I get it in the night. Sometimes, I am in a foul mood the whole day. My wife senses that it is the creative time.

When I made Border, I did not know I would make Refugee. When I made Refugee, I did not know I would make LoC. I take things as they come and pray to God that they work out.

My creativity works all the time. As I am giving this interview, my brain is composing some tune. If you give me some words now, I can put them to music.

I don't believe in a bank of tunes. I may have hummed 25,000 tunes into cassettes and thrown them away. When a producer or director comes to me, I hum fresh tunes to them. I might have a bank of 35,000 tunes, but I don't know where they are.

I once hummed a tune on the street. My daughter remembered it. Later, I used it for a song for Santosh Sivan. I never plan anything. It just happens.

I am honest, not rude, says Annu Mallek

Sarcasm, rudeness and harsh comments seem to have become synonymous with singer Annu Mallek. No wonder he is considered the most horrendous judge at the biggest talent hunt show - 'Indian Idol'. 

While the composer cum singer explains his stand by saying that ˜he says what he see, he is quick to add that he would always support a good singer.

As the third season of Indian Idol progresses, Mallek continues judging the contestants in his same infamous style - 'being honest not rude'. In a candid chat he spoke about the kind of contestants he came across and the ways his comments were appreciated and respected and in some cases, considered rude and offensive.

"I would love to misguide contestants just for the sake of bringing a smile on their face but they have to accept that the competition is fierce. Believe me, people have benefited from my statements and for those who dont take my comments seriously, I cannot help it," says Mallek.

While contestants on the show do take Malleks words quite seriously, the fear of being offended by a judge can also affect a contestants performance. What does Mallek have to say about that? "Spoon feeding will not help the contestants. We are not here to make friends  or enemies. I am a responsible judge and I am here to choose the best from a big lot. Just for the sake of being polite to someone, I cannot ruin their career . I never insulted any contestant. Rather I let them know the truth, which they often dont accept. People should draw a line of demarcation between rudeness and honesty in my comments," Mallek asserts.

"If I am shouting at them, it is because they don't sing well. If someone has sung badly and I say 'why dont you chill, relax and do something else', I dont see anything wrong in this. Its just a way to tell them where they stand," he adds. Mallek confirms that there have been cases when contestants with zero knowledge of music have come for auditions.. "They think themselves to be rock stars, so they need to realize something called 'reality'. In such cases, we have to guide them, not misguide them, and stop them from doing the wrong things," he says.

Recalling the instance when a contestants mother abused him for being rude towards her son in the auditions, Mallek shares, "I understand she was hurt but she should also understand that I am in the industry since last 28 years. Insulting a composer like me, who has worked with the likes of Lata Ji, Kishore Da, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan etc, she did not do the right thing. I will always stand for a good singer and would always applaud a good performance, but if someone is non-deserving, I have to be honest and people call it being rude."

Stating that such bitter experiences are quite stressful, he adds, "I am also a father and can very well understand how it feels when your child is rejected but then it depends on person to person. There have been auditions where parents have thanked me even if I rejected their children, and the reason for this they feel is I showed them the right path."

But is such a harsh approach the only way to make the contestants realise where they stand? "Ok let me explain. If I tell a contestant that see you didnt sing well but it was not that bad also, so why dont you learn nusic for some five years and then again come for the auditions. After hearing such a comment from me, they see some light and start pursuing music as their career. Telling them calmly that keep on trying, your day would some soon, is like giving them wrong hopes. In such case, they trust my words to such an extent that they leave behind everything for something they dont even know about," says Mallek.

"Its better to be honest and straight forward and tell them that you cannot sing so please try your luck in some other field. When I say this, I mean that if not music you might excel in some other field." he adds.

Referring to various contestants in the third season of the show, Mallek went on to say: "There was a girl who kept on crying even before I said anything, as she said she already knew that she wont be selected. Then there was a Muslim guy who mentioned about worshipping Udit Narayan regularly. There was another one who shouted ˜I love Annu Mallek I do understand their emotions and appreciate their dedication."

'Why can't we be original?'

The year 2003 sees music composer Anu Malik complete 25 years in the Hindi film industry.

Anu MalikThe man who started with the B-grade Hunterwali 77 (1978) went on to create great music in films like Ek Jaan Hai Hum, Sohni Mahiwal, Mard, Sir, Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee, Baazigar, Imtihaan, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Vijaypath, Akele Hum Akele Tum, Border, Virasat, Tamanna, Biwi No 1, Fiza, Aks, Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai, Asoka, Filhaal, Khushi, Ishq Vishk, and many more.

That he has been accused of stealing tunes from the West has not affected Malik's work list. This year sees him score the music for films like Sooraj Barjatya's Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Apoorva Lakhia's Mumbai Se Aaya Mere Dost, Madhur Bhandarkar's Aan and J P Dutta's LoC, among others. In fact, the music of the first two films has already topped the charts.

The music director promises Rajiv Vijayakar that this is only the drizzle before the sizzle. Excerpts from an interview:

The Rajshris have only worked with (music director) Raamlaxman in all their films. How did you manage to take his place?

I have always wanted to work with the Rajshris. When his first film, Maine Pyar Kiya [in 1989, starring Salman Khan and Bhagyashree] released, I was floored by the film. I approached Rajbabu -- Sooraj's father -- for work, even though I had made it by then. But I was told that Raamlaxman gave them good music consistently.

After Hum Saath Saath Hain [starring Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Monish Behl, Karisma Kapoor, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam]¸ I requested Sooraj to give me a hearing at least. He told me that he was busy with a script and that I should call him after six months.

We met after six months. I sang a tune that seemed to make his eyes sparkle, but he did not comment. After 10 days I lost hope as that was the time when my sittings with Karan Johar for Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Devdas failed.

Then one day Sooraj phoned me and said, 'Welcome to the Rajshri family!' My first reaction was 'Yessss!'

How was he to work with?

His narration of Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon floored me. Sooraj would kneel for four or five hours in a yoga posture and get carried away. It was like watching the entire film through his eyes. At the very first narration, I interrupted him with a tune, Aaj main hoon, aur tum ho, aur mohabbat hai. This was filmed on Abhishek Bachchan. Rajbabu, who was also present, said that in 25 years, he had never seen a composer who created a tune right there in front of him. A lot of tunes were created during the narration itself.

Sooraj never made me feel that he was doing me a favour by giving me the film, nor did he ever mention his past laurels.

How did you choose your playback singers?Kareena Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan in MPKDH

I was told in 2000 that the music, which would be released after three years, must sound fresh. I opted for Ranjit Barot for sound design, as we had worked fabulously on Khalid Mohamed's Fiza, Rakesh Mehra's Aks, and Santosh Sivan's Asoka. The singers were my suggestions for the same reason. I think Chitra is at par with Lataji [Mangeshkar] and Ashaji [Bhosle]. When I called Chitramaa -- that's what I call her -- she became emotional, as she had never sung for a complete Hindi film before.

I chose KK because he had been typecast in high-pitched songs, even by me. I wanted to make him sing romantic numbers. As for Shaan, whenever I hear him I feel that Abhishek Bachchan is singing. Sunidhi Chauhan came in for the passion, as she understands me in such songs.

Your Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost has a riveting score too.

Yes. Can you believe that the film was planned as a songless one?

Your first spelling change proved lucky for you. But the second change last year brought you bad luck. Is that why you have reverted to Anu Malik?

Look, a man who is down experiments. But I have realised that only your work matters, not the spelling of your name.

After Aks, Asoka and Meghna Gulzar's Filhaal, you went through a dull phase...

The general scene was bad. But I think my albums, Anil Kumar's Kucch To Hai and S J Suryah's Khushi, made profits for the music companies concerned.

During this phase, even Subhash Ghai moved away from you.

It was Subhash Ghai's choice to come to me or move away. I learnt a lot from him. But if I am grateful to him for the work we did, I am also cool when my filmmakers move away. If they return, like Umesh Mehra and Vinod Chopra did, it's a high. During these years, I have seen it all. I am the only composer who refuses films. I am talented enough to compose internationally.

Does the success or failure of a music score make any difference to you?

I do not worry about the past. I move on. I am confident that God will help me create a new tune everyday. You may not believe me, but I do not listen to my songs more than twice or thrice after they have been recorded. If I brood on them, I will not be able to make a new tune.

Tell us about your forthcoming films.

Farah Khan's Main Hoon Na has amazing and variegated music, including a qawwali. I am also doing Pooja Bhatt's next film. J P Dutta is my all-time favourite. The music in LoC beats that of his previous films, Border and Refugee, hands down. In Vinod Chopra's Munnabhai MBBS, I will create magic with Shreya Ghosal [one of the female playback singers of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas]. Madhur Bhandarkar's Aan and Rajkumar Santoshi's Khakee are not musical subjects, but the challenge lies in composing passable music.

Gurinder Chaddha's Bride And Prejudice is my first international project and I am very excited about it. This film is a musical that moves from India to London to Los Angeles. The songs are in Punjabi, Hindi and English.

You spoke about going global. What are your plans?

Lara Dutta, Abhishek Bachchan in Mumbai Se Aaya Mera DostI want to write for big names like Whitney Houston and The Backstreet Boys. My song Chhamma chhamma was used in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge, though I was not credited. I will use this and Gurinder's film as a stepping stone to go West.

The music industry is facing its worst-ever recession now...

Let me tell you why! It is not downloading, nor technology like MP3, nor piracy. It's just bad music! Why are we still seduced by The Backstreet Boys and Whitney Houston? Why can't we be original? Why should people pay money to listen to poor music? The pop element and the obsession with sound and technology is a passing phase.

Would you like to score music for period films?

Given a chance, I would do a great job for a Bajirao Mastani, Mughal-e-Azam, or a Lagaan. But my image comes in the way. People forget my music in Asoka. They will only remember my Judwaa. Some composers have to prove themselves all the time. I am one of them. Besides, I wear jeans and a T-shirt and appear flamboyant. Maybe if I wear a kurta and pyjama and sport a teeka, or turn elusive and work at nights, they will come to me!

My Fundays

I was born and brought up in Mumbai and I was pretty naughty in school. One thing I remember clearly is that I used to find Marathi poetry very difficult to learn, so I used to sing and memorise it. I used to compose my own tunes. In fact, my father had maintained right from the beginning that I would be a music composer. I also loved to sing.

I must share with you a funny incident. When I was in the sixth standard, there was a girl in my class whom we called ‘Chiclets’ and we used to tease her by rattling boxes of Chiclets when she was around. She had lovely long hair. She never used to react when we teased her. I used to sit on the last bench in class and when I used to get bored I would play tabla on the desk.. One day when the teacher was explaining something, I kept on playing tak dhina dhin on the desk.

Chiclets promptly stood up and complained to the teacher, who punished me by making me stand on the bench for three periods. I was furious. So I chewed some gum, took it out of my mouth, and gingerly picked up her long plaits from behind and stuck the gum on to her hair with great pains. But then having done the deed, I almost died of fear. So, I threw the packet of chewing gum on another boy. But when he was caught with the packet, he had to be excused as he could not have played the mischief from so far. Anyway, the whole thing passed off and we had to cut off the girl’s hair to rid her of the chewing gum. Then she came to me and said, “I’m sorry, I’ll never complain about you again. But please don’t do this or I’ll have to cut my hair again and I have such lovely hair!” After that we became friends.

When we were eleven years old, I went to see a movie with a friend. I remember feeling terrible because my friend insisted on wearing her school dress. I told her to wear something else but she just wouldn’t listen! Sadly, my plans of posing as an adult failed.

Bride and Prejudice, the new film from British Director Gurinder Chadda, has been in the news ever since it was conceptualized. An adaptation of the classic Pride and Prejudice novel, the film stars one of Hollywood´s rising stars Martin Henderson (The Ring, Tourque) and our very own Aishwarya Rai. Titled Balle Balle Amritsar to L.A. in Hindi, Gurinder Chadda decided to rope in Anu Malik to score the music for the film. You would think that Anu would make the best of an international project, and come up with a progressive and original score. Yet Anu´s score for B&P is sadly below average. It´s apparent his heart wasn´t in this one. The songs of this film wouldn´t even pass for an A+ project in Bollywood let alone an international project. It´s very ordinary fare.

The album gets off to a pretty mediocre start with the song Balle Balle (Wedding song). A song with a heavy Punjabi/Bhangra flavour, this is run of the mill Bollywood stuff. While the song captures the essence of a Bhangra number, it doesn´t rise above expectations. Sonu Nigam and Gayatri Iyer do their best with their renditions, and since both are good singers, there are no complaints in this department. Lyrics are adequate and fit the mood of the song.

Another wedding number featured on the album is Lo Shaadi Aayi, which bears a passing resemblance to the opening number but changes pace too often. Anu Malik seems to be trying to fit everything into one song, so we have a constant change in pace and composition which doesn´t sit well with the listener. Singers Sunidhi Chauhan, Alka Yagnik, Anu Malik, Gayatri Iyer and Kunal Ganjawala all get lost under each other´s voices. Lyrics are nothing to write home about, and on the whole this track is a let down.

Malik tries his hand at composing a Broadway/Showtune style number with No Life Without Wife. Unfortunately his composition is short of expectations once again. Unlike the recent Pyaar Mein Sau from Kyun Ho Gaya Na, which succeeded in capturing the flavour of a show tune, this one doesn´t. Malik´s composition is lackluster and doesn´t get your feet tapping like it should. While the picturisation does help a bit, ultimately the song is situational and won´t find favour amongst the audience. Gayatri Iyer, Swomya Rao and Nisha Mascarenhas all do well with their respective renditions, and are the saving grace of the number. Lyrics are situational and mildly entertaining keeping with the playful mood.

Dola Dola is more of an instrumental number rather than a song. With minimal lyrics, reduced to more of a chant of one phrase, Gayatri Iyer takes it easy and glides through the song with ease. The music is boring and at times too loud, still it´s got a festive feel which will ensure lots of play at festivals and events to come.

Payal Bajaake sung by Gayatri Iyer is a groovy track. Obviously aimed at the youth, this song is decent enough and passes muster. The lyrics by Dev Kohli and Gurinder´s husband Paul Mayeda Berges are ok, although with two heads collaborating on the wording, this one should have had better lyrics. Gayatri renders the song with ease, but the song isn´t demanding vocally. Picturised on Murder Inc. R&B/Hip Hop artiste Ashanti, this one will most likely be uplifted by picturisation.

The only truly commendable track on the album is the romantic number Tumse Kahen Ya Na Kahen. Anu Malik´s composition is significantly uplifted thanks to the use of guitar in the background, and the use of a choir during the closing portions of the song. Javed Akhtar´s lyrics are nice, and do the job. This is definitely the best written song on the album. Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik do a nice job with the singing, but don´t break any new ground. A sad version and an instrumental also appear on the album. With three versions it´s a bet the whole team realized this was the albums only worthwhile number.

Bride and Prejudice is a major letdown. Those new to the Bollywood scene may enjoy the music to some extent, but for those of us who have grown up on Bollywood soundtracks, this one won´t even register in your memory. None of the songs on this soundtrack stick with you after listening to it. Anu Malik´s score is lame, and definitely not up to international standards. Gurinder would have been wiser had she picked someone like A R Rehman, Shankar Ehsaan Loy or even Sandeep Chowta to do the music. Ranjit Barot´s arrangements and the singers (especially the very talented Gayatri Iyer who features prominently on the album) can´t help much either. Anu Malik better get used to Bollywood, cause this one won´t get him anywhere.

Mallika Sherawat will step in to Madhubala's shoes in Maan Gaye Mughal -E-Azam. She will dance to a song loosely-based on ‘Pyaar kiya toh darna kya’ from the classic film, Mughal-E-Azam

Comedy film Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam doesn't just have a title that is similar to the classic, Mughal-E-Azam. The Mallika Sherawat-starrer will also have the song `Pyaar kiya toh darna kiya' although in a completely different format.



The song, written by Sanjay Chhel and composed by Anu Malik, will be picturised on Mallika.



The film's producer, Ratan Jain from Venus Films, says, “Yes, we have a song loosely based on the classic song 'Pyaar kiya toh darna kya' but it is a completely different tune from the original song. We will shoot for the song with Mallika some time next month.”



Anu Malik says “Let me first make it very clear that no one can ever repeat or even remotely come close to the original song 'Pyaar kiya toh darna kya' from Mughal-E-

Azam. For me, that song is one of the best songs in the history of our film industry. It was not only melodious but also extremely well written. And who can forget Madhubala in the song?”



The music composer says that the new song is his interpretation of the song in today's time. Although the new song has the famous lyrics, it is completely different as Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam is a comedy film in which Mallika and the rest of the cast play stage performers.



“My song is about one of their stage performances. I know there will be people who will be waiting to throw bricks at me for the song but I am sure I'll also be appreciated for it. The song has a lot of funny lines,” adds Anu.



Anu also says that his song is only meant to be funny and not derogatory.

Anu Malik has been the judge of Indian Idol for three consecutive seasons. Now the composer is all set to move to Jakarta to be the judge at the Asian Idol. The contest begins next month and will feature the winners of music reality shows from India, Indonesian, Malaysia, Philippine, Singapore and Vietnam.


India will be represented by Abhijeet Sawant the winner of the first Indian Idol. The show will require the participants sing two songs one in English and the other in their native language. Anu Malik will be among the six judges representing the six countries. Anu who has developed a unique style of judging


The composer says it will be a nice learning experience for him as he will get to know different cultures. Anu also says that language is not at all a barrier to judge music and he will be happy if Abhijeet Sawant turns out to win this round too.

A busy year for Anu Malik

With no releases in 2007 (except for a song in Undertrial), Anu Malik is set to return with a series of assignments in 2008. His projects include Satish Kaushik’s Tere Sang, Anant Mahadevan’s Anamika, Hansal Mehta’s Woodstock Villa, Aditya Datt’s Good Luck, Ramanjit Juneja’s Hastey-Hastey, Apoorva Lakhia’s Mission Istannbul, Kireet Khurana’s Toonpur Ka Superhero, Ashim Samanta’s Don Muthuswami and Sachin Khot’s Ugly Aur Pagli, produced by Pritish Nandy Communications.
 
 
However one of his most awaited scores will have to be Harry Baweja’s Love Story 2050, which marks the debut of Harman Baweja opposite Priyanka Chopra.
 

Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam is another project from Venus Records and Tapes, directed by Sanjay Chhel and has Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose in pivotal roles.

 

But the comeback vehicle for Anu Malik is speculated to be Sabir Khan’s Kambakth Ishq, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor have been finalized for this mega venture.

 

Many producers and directors with whom Anu Malik had worked before, are today repeating him, like Harry Baweja, the Jains from Venus, Shakti Samanta, Apoorva Lakhia and Sajid Nadiadwala.

 

A Tips home production was announced in late 2006 but no development has been heard at this stage yet.

 

The music director who started his career 30 years ago with Mohan Choti’s Hunterwalli 77, is also excited about his daughter’s playback singing at the moment.

 

As a child singer, Anmol Malik had a few lines in Biwi No.1 and Badal. In 2006, she gave a truly memorable performance in Umrao Jaan’s 'Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya'. She will next be heard in Tere Sang and Ugly Aur Pagli.
