Delhi-6 Music Review
Delhi-6 - Mellifluous tunes unveiled

IndiaGlitz  Tuesday, January 20, 2009

 Delhi-6

The year 2008 has been the most stupefying year for Rahman fans and you know why? 'Jodha Akbar', 'Jaane  Tu Ya Jaane Na', 'Yuvvraaj', 'Ghajini' and 'Slumdog Millionaire; Well, it's been a 'Rah-mania' with prodigious tunes of unique genres. Be it 'Tu Hi Meri Dost', 'Jai Ho', 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala' or 'Guzarish, everything has been soul-stirring strains from the Mozart of Chennai. Here come, the duo Rahman-Rakeysh Om Prakash who created wonders with their combination in 'Rang De Basanthi'.

Perhaps for 'Delhi-6', a couple of songs 'Masakali' and 'Maula' continuously aired round-the- clock shot our adrenalines looking out for other numbers. And here comes the most spectacular album and precisely, they are exceptional from Rahman's compositions during the previous year. Moreover, it is the never-heard-before tunes that'll get you transfixed.  Indeed, Rahman offers 'Dus Dhamaka' with panache and every number is gonna top the charts.

Aarti (Tumre Bhavan Mein)  - Rekha Bharadwaj, Kishori Gowariker, Shraddha Pandit, Sujata Majumdar

It's Prasoon's heart-warming lyrics that make the song exceptional in the album. Rahman is exceptional when it comes to blending melody with simple instrumentations. Yup! All throughout 180 seconds, we hear a single-noted Veena with simple beats on cymbals blended with a mesmerizing chorus humming. Perhaps, an ardent fan of Rahman should've heard of similar genres in his Tamil composition for 'Alaipaayudhe   Kanna'…

Arziyan - Javed Ali, Kailash Kher

Sufism which is so close to Rahman's heart drives him tuning such melodies. Of course, it's so illustrious with his previous piece of music for 'Pia Haji Ali', 'Khwaja Mere Kwaja' in 'Jodhaa Akbar'. And again, here's one more on the same lines. A lengthy duration of 9 minutes has tabla and harmoniums accompanied by the glorious voice of Javed Ali and Kailash Kher. Prasoon Joshi gears up for yet another devotional song.

Both 'Aarti' and 'Arziyan' are devotional hymns of different religions and yet Rahman's composition gets the listeners mesmerized sans barriers.

Bhor Bhaye - Shreya Ghosal, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Gujri Todi

The music maestro weaves a spell of magic on 'Hindustani Ghazal' with the same instrumentations of tabla and harmonium used in previous the song. We have an evergreen legend Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan rendering in his voice. Shreya Ghosal adds colour, shifting octaves on her voice which flows in to the listener's ears and Gujri Todi makes it with finesse. Sounds like a live-recording and possibly Rahman should have done it because it adds a naturalistic touch.

Delhi – 6 - Blaaze, Benny Dayal, Vivinenne Pocha, Tanvi, Claire

Doubtlessly, heeding to the first three numbers of 'Carnatic', 'Sufi Qawwali' and 'Hindustani Raga', you should've made listeners perceive Delhi-6 to be an offbeat genre. If so, you're wrong… Here goes the precipitous shift to a different scenario. Of course, just imagine how a song sounds when there's Blaaze, Benny Dayal, Vivinenne, Tanvi and Claire are on the track. A stylish sleek rap savors to the tastes of young lads and missies.  Simple-yet-catchy beats on synthesizers and lyrics penned by Vivinenne Pocha and Claire make it a lavish fiesta.

Dil Gira Dafatan - Ash King, Backing Chinmayee

A western style with Ash King's voice and good accompaniment by Chinmayee makes the song so special… Running notes on lead guitars with vibes on intervals is picked by an exceeding orchestration of stringed instruments. Preludes on violin blended with strings offers a feel of heeding to contemporary World Music.

Genda Phool - Rekha Bharadwaj, Shraddha Pandit and Sujata Majumdar

Need a best illustration for fantastic mix of West 'n' Folk? And you have it here with 'Genda Phool'. Rekha Bharadwaj's unique style of vocalism picks listeners' interest while chorus parts by Shraddha and Sujatha offers enhancement to the song. Nothing exceptional with the beats, for the synthesized ones on pads and bass guitars are repeated throughout.

Hey Kaala Bandhar - Karthik, Naresh, Srinivas, Bony Chakravarthy

Sounds alike one of Rahman's previous compositions of 'Shano Shano' from Yuvvrraj and precisely, the chorus part is a bit similar to 'Dil Ka Rishta' from the same album. Rap lines are again the same remix of 'Shano Shano'. We are not sure who Kaala Bandhar is, guess we have to wait for the promos to come out… The song may capture our senses once on the screen.

Masakali - Mohit Chouhan

Uh-huh! The song that has been raising our expectations with beautiful promos is finally out. Like 'Bheka' in 'Ghajini', Prasoon Joshi pens yet another song with lyrics that are filled with tongue twisters and Mohit Chouhan spells it on best terms. With Congo drums used on rhythms, 'a good experiment' by Rahman works best. Masakali is worthy getting ennobled as the 'Song of the Album'.

Rehna Tu  - A. R. Rahman, Benny Dayal, Tanvi

Rahman rendering a song always turns to be a chart topper. Is it because he picks the best songs and sings or the song becomes special once with Rahman's voice? Yeah! It goes unanswerable at many times and 'Rehna Tu' isn't an exception. A wonderful orchestration of voices between Rahman, Benny Dayal and Tanvi gets you addicted to the song with simple beats.  Don't miss the instrumental (Flute and strings) part at the penultimate part of the song; they're awesome.

Noor  - Amitabh Bachchan

Possibly, maybe this voiceover is heard in the prologue part of film. Amitabh's catchy-voice uttering the poignant poem on 'Ishq' penned by Prasoon is easily grasping. On instruments, stringed chords following mildly with vibes are heard.

On the whole, A.R. Rahman offers an exquisite platter of tunes to his fans with his music in 'Delhi-6'. Well, assume it to be the maestro's special treat for the 'Golden Globe Achievement'. And again, Rahman starts off 2009 with fascinating musicals and doubtlessly, the songs are sure to be prized as best spells of this year.

Verdict: Best-cherishing tunes ever heard

Rahman hits the bull's eye with 'Delhi-6'

(IANS) Thursday, January 22, 2009

Film: "Delhi-6"; Music Director: A.R. Rahman; Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi; Singers: Rekha Bharadwaj, Kishori Gowariker, Shraddha Pandit, Sujata Majumdar, Kailash Kher, Javed Ali, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Shreya Ghoshal, Benny Dayal, Vivienne Pocha, Blaaze, Tanvi, Claire, Ash King, Chinmayee, Karthik, Naresh, Srinivas, Bony Chakravarthy, Mohit Chauhan, Amitabh Bachchan and Rahman. Rating: ***

Where there is Rahman, there ought to be expectations. Riding high on his Golden Globe success, Rahman has left no stone unturned to give the music of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Delhi-6" a unique and extremely fresh touch. The 10-song album is a concoction of awe-inspiring melodies, feet tapping rhythms, wonderful lyrics and some impressive singing.

"Tumre Bhavan Mein" adds a touch of spirituality to the album. Short and soothing, the song that offers prayers, is very melodious. "Tumre Bhavan Mein" is backed by vocals from Rekha Bharadwaj, Kishori Gowariker, Shraddha Pandit and Sujata Majumdar.

Not many composers explore qawwali these days, but Rahman did that seamlessly with "Arziyan". Tabla, harmonium and the clapping sounds, supported by meaningful lyrics - all create a mesmerising listening experience. The Sufism-imbued notes of the song and its requisite poignancy are backed flawlessly by the two singers - Javed Ali and Kailash Kher.

Rahman has packed in a surprise in the form of "Bhor Bhaye" - it delves into Indian classical form and is a treat. With Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan's rousing rendition and Shreya Ghoshal's honeyed voice, "Bhor bhaye" is an overwhelming experience, especially for those who crave for classics.

Next song, "Delhi-6", pays a tribute to the city. The funky song is contemporary from the word go and blends a dash of rock, rap and hip-hop. "Delhi-6", which is a ragged mélange of attitude and style, is sure to be hummed by every youngster. Benny Dayal, Vivienne Pocha, Blaze, Tanvi and Claire have crooned it.

With "Dil gira dafatan", Prasoon Joshi reaffirms what a good lyricist he is. To add to that, the melody and the simplistic arrangement of instruments are extremely soothing to the ear. Ash King is the lead singer while Chinmayee's backing creates some spell-binding moments.

"Genda phool", sung by Rekha Bharadwaj, Shraddha Pandit and Sujata Majumdar, is a teasing folk song. It starts as a purely rustic and rooted number, but soon western arrangements take over. Composer Rajat Dholakia and Rahman share the credit for the song, which is quite playful.

"Hey kaala bandar" is easily the poorest track in the album. The number in the hip-hop genre, with a few English lyrics, fails to create a mark. The song is sung by Karthik, Naresh, Srinivas and Bony Chakravarthy.

"Masakalli" is easily the best song on the soundtrack. A power packed and expressive number, it is crooned by Mohit Chauhan. A free flowing, addictive, fun number, "Masakalli" will be remembered for months to come owing to its mirthful, fluttering mood.

"Noor" is a small couplet recited by Amitabh Bachchan.

"Rehna tu" is meant to be a smoothly flowing, romantic number. But in spite of Rahman lending his voice to the song and Benny Dayal along with Tanvi doing well with backing vocals, the song doesn't really captivate.

Overall, the album is a robust mix of impressive tracks with some great and hummable lyrics, making it a sure hit among music lovers.

A.R. Rahman is a legendary musician at this point. The music director is experiencing a year that others could only dream about. From releasing amazingly diverse soundtracks like, “Ada”, “Jaane Tu, Ya Jaane Na”, “Jodha Akbar”, “Yuvvraaj”, “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Ghajini” (each one of these soundtracks is a classic), to winning the Golden Globe Award for best soundtrack (“Slumdog Millionaire”). This creative titan seemingly holds the motto, that the sky is never the limit. All of us rahmaniacs are experiencing musical nirvana, as album after album comes out. Now the pressure is on to see if Rahman can continue his winning streak with “Delhi-6”, director Rakeysh Mehra’s follow up to the smash hit, “Rang De Basanti”. The film’s plot has been shrouded in secrecy, but we know that Abhishek Bachchan stars along with Sonam Kapoor, and the promos have been enticing to say the least. Mehra repeats Rahman and the extremely talented lyricist Prasoon Joshi for this soundtrack. It’s time for us to see if Rahman can surpass not only his previous releases from the last few months, but also if he can surpass the excellent music of “Rang De Basanti”. So it’s with great anticipation that I dim the lights, block out the world around me, and focus as we take this journey to “Delhi-6” together. Will your breath and mine be taken away? Let’s find out!

The first track is rushing up the charts due to the excellent promos running all over the music channels and the web. “Masakalli” grabs you by the ear right away with the sweet accordion sounds of the keyboard and soft percussion, but what really gets it going is the excellent singing by Mohit Chauhan (of Indi-Pop band Silk Route) who is finally given a chance to shine. His rendition of the title word, masakalli, but also the way he inflects his accent really gives the track a Delhi flavor. Rahman wisely lets the singer’s voice take center stage and provides just the right supporting instrumentation. Prasoon Joshi should be given special attention for writing the smashing lyrics, as they are a living breathing part of the song. This one has to be played loud as you dance that goofy dance that we do when no one is around! Thums up on this one…. way up!

From there we move into the world of classical music, with “Bhor Bhaye”. One can picture a beautiful Sonam Kapoor performing a classical dance to this. Shreya Ghosal is in top form and she is able to handle the swerving lyrical vocal effects of the classical raga. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan provides the masterji voice. The unique beginning of the track as if it’s being listened to on an old cassette deck adds a nice touch to it. Rahman backs the classical vocal styling with the traditional tabla and harmonium instrument combo. Fans of classical music will love this short but sweet track. Another thummmmmms up as classical dancers sway this way and that!

Amitabh Bachchan’s God like deep throated growl is the selling point of the next track, “Noor”, which is basically him talking over some celestial new age sounding music (think twinkling stars against the midnight sky). The shayeri styling is excellent. Short, sweet and to the point. Not really a song per se, but worth a listen.

Speaking of celestial music, the next song, “Tumre Bhavan Mein” is a beautiful aarti (prayer) song. Rekha Bhardwaj, Kishori Gowariker, Shraddha Pandit, and Sujata Majumder provide the angelic voices. The music is kept simple with the gentle strumming of sitar and ringing of bells to provide the calm atmosphere that one experiences during a religious ceremony or at the temple. A prayer to God and another thums up for this beautiful aarti!

Looped synth bass pervades the next song, “Genda Phool”, which is a traditional sounding track based on a family situation layered over a madman’s techno beat. It’s an interesting fusion by Rahman, and something that perhaps only a talented creator like him could carry off. It’s mad, it’s wild, and it’s strangely catchy. It’s cultured tradition for the techno crowd. Give it a listen, and you’ll be strangely captivated as your thumb slowly rises to say…thums up!

So far we’ve got ourselves the excellent “Masakalli” with the remaining tracks sounding quite situational. Beautiful though they are, perhaps you won’t be repeating them over and over until you see the visuals of the film, but give them a chance and you will find yourself enchanted by the beauty of the compositions.

The next song breaks through that; however, as it’s what I feel the best track on the album. “Dil Gira Dafatan”, simply takes your breath away from the beginning. What with the opening lyrics eloquently sung by Ash King. Keyboards (keyboard violins) and the strumming of guitars in a very meditative style support King’s vocals. It’s almost gives the listener a feeling of riding a horse over the hills of the countryside, while the sun sets behind you and your heart pines away for the love of your life. The musical interludes are a pleasant fusion of Irish sounding flutes mixed with a bit of Chinese styling added in very subtly. Chinmayee provides the female counterpoint at just the right points. The lyrics by Prasoon are poetically and lyrically moving. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful from beginning to end, this track showcases why A.R. Rahman is the best music director in India. Thums way up for this brave and beautiful track that will move your soul!

After the breathtaking “Dil Gira Dafatan”, we are whisked to the present day with the “dance” track of the album, the quirkily titled “Hey Kaala Bander”. The title will leave you laughing and the rest of the song will put a smile on your face. It’s odd, and has a wandering techno beat, but the quirky lyrics and the interlude with the Arabic style singing adds a nice touch. Who knew that Prasoon Joshi had such a wicked sense of humor? Karthik, Naresh, and Bony Chakravarthy provide the aggressive singing that has a bit of rapping and a lot of attitude. Sometimes you don’t need a deep song to enjoy the music. This track is a nice break from the more heavy and heartfelt ones that precede it. I give it a big “bander-ious” thums up….ook…ook…! Where’s the monkey man!?!? You better watch your banana…..er….ummm….just listen to the song right away!

Whenever I listen to a Rahman soundtrack, I anxiously wait for what I call his track. The one for which he takes the mic. We didn’t get one of those in “Ghajini” or “Yuvvraaj”, but we did get one (sort of) with “O Saya” from “Slumdog Millionaire”. Rahman has the kind of voice that just puts you in a meditative trance. It works best with heartfelt tunes. So, it is that the curtains are drawn and from the speakers the excellent next track of “Delhi-6” gently sways the listener. “Rehna Tu” starts out with a funky percussive beat with Rahman singing in a very jazzy style that immediately grabs your attention. The layered voices that support him include Rahman mainstay Benny Dayal and Tanvi. It’s jazzy, it’s funky, and it’s Rahman being playfully creative by combining different styles of music. The way Rahman enunciates…”Rahna Tu….hai jaisa tu” is very moving. The wah wah guitar is used to great effect at various points and touch of the Arabic along with the strumming guitars combine to form perfection. The melody and refrain are very catchy and will pull at your heartstrings. A soft romantic thums up for this one!

Yeh Delhi hai mere yaar…! You’ll be singing along to the next track “Delhi-6”. It’s funkedelic fun that will make you want to visit Dilli right away! The music is trip hopping with some mad guitar playing. Vocals by Rahman mainstays, Blaaze, Benny Dayal, Vivinenne Pocha, Tanvi, and Claire are suitably aggressive. The lyrics by Vivinenne Pocha and Claire fit the situation set up by the song. The female vocals give the track a reggaeton feel. Another great track that will leave you humming along, “Yeh Delhi hai mere yaar…bus ishq mohhabat pyar………” as you give it a Delhi thums up!

What an amazing musical journey it has been so far with this soundtrack. Rahman has given us styles that range from the folksy “Massakalli” to the classical “Bhor Bhaye”, to the higher level aarti “Tumre Bhavan Mein”, to the funky yet traditional “Genda Phool”, to the absolutely masterful “Dil Gira Dafatan”, to the quirky “Hey Kaala Bander”, to the soul stirring “Rehna Tu”, to the urban funk of “Delhi-6”, and finally to a masterful end with an irresistible qawwali, “Arziyan”. Javed Ali and Kailash Kher bring the house down with this track. You will clap along with them as they sing the higher power lyrics written by Prasoon Joshi. Rahman keeps the synths to a bare minimum here, instead relying on the classical based instruments dholak, tabla along with harmonium and that ages old human instrument, the clapping of hands. A perfect ending to this most perfect of soundtracks, this track will have you shouting, ‘WAH WAH Rahman bhai…ONCE MORE…THUMS UP!”

One would think that Rahman couldn’t raise the bar any higher.Just when you wonder how high he can go, he raises the bar even higher until one feels that he has attained true musical nirvana and we are lucky enough to be along for the ride. “Delhi-6” shows a Rahman that is at the top of his game. He is a league ahead of his contemporaries and an artist that transcends global boundaries to spread the joy of his music throughout the world. As of this writing, he has just won the Golden Globe award for the music of “Slumdog Millionaire” and has been nominated for best music by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. I am sure he will be nominated and win the Academy Award for best music as well. Being creative and re-inventing oneself over the years is no easy feat, but Rahman has proven time and again that his creative well never runs dry. “Delhi-6” is a masterpiece from a master maestro, and another soundtrack that will be treasured for years to come. I don’t know how the movie will turn out, but this soundtrack far surpasses “Rang De Basanti” in scope, variety and beauty. Do yourself a favor and listen to this one over and over. You won’t regret it as you let the music take you to the darkest and brightest parts of your soul. Rahmaniacs rejoice in the musical nirvana that is A.R. Rahman!

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra presented a first look at his next film “Delhi-6” (earlier titled in “Dilli 6”) to the media at the Dubai International Film Festival today (December 14, 2008).

The very short, intense looking teaser was a collage of scenes from old Delhi such as the Friday prayers at the Jama Masjid and cycle rickshaws in the meandering lanes of the old town interspersed with shots of the Statue of Liberty, a carefree Sonam Kapoor dancing with a pigeon perched on her head and Abhishek Bachchan in a variety of moods. And a soulful, unmistakably A.R. Rahman number in Sonu Nigam’s voice playing in the background.

“The film is about Roshan Mehra, who travels to India with his ailing grandmother. Little does he realise that this short trip will turn into the longest journey of his life – a journey where he discovers India and himself,” said Mehra. The story is told against the backdrop of the walled city of old Delhi. And the number 6 in the title is the postal pin code of the area.

“I grew up in Delhi, but contrary to media reports this film is not autobiographical,” clarified Mehra. “I based it in old Delhi because I believe that the city is a microcosm of India in terms of our mindset. But despite the ancient setting, the film is an exploration of contemporary Indian society,” he added. Mehra also said that like “Rang De Basanti”, this film too has political overtones because he believes that “we cannot and should not avoid politics”.

Speaking about his role, Abhishek said, “This film presents a foreigner’s point of view of what the real India is and I could identify with that because I was away from India for many years during my schooling. Doing this film was a life changing experience for me and I am happy I got this opportunity to discover myself.”

Sonam Kapoor believes that her character Bittu represents today’s Indian youth. “Bittu has her quirks and strengths. And I hope young people learn something from her mistakes and struggles and they feel inspired to accept their own culture instead of trying to blindly ape others,” she said.

Looking strikingly pretty in a black Vivienne Westwood dress and magenta Marc Jacobs ballerina shoes, Sonam incidentally got the biggest applause when she the “Delhi-6” team was introduced to the room full of media.

The film’s stellar cast includes Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri, Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Pawan Malhotra, Atul Kulkarni, Supriya Pathak, Tanvi Azmi, Divya Dutta, Vijay Raaz, Deepak Dobriyal and KK Raina. It is co-produced by UTV and Mehra and slated for release on February 20, 2009.

Dil mera Dil mera
Dil MEra Dil MEraaaa

Aaa aaa

Dil Gira kahin per dafatan
Dil Gira kahin per dafatan
Jane Magar Yeh naiyan
Teri Kahmosh zulfon ki gehraiyaan

Dil Gira Kahin per dafatan
Kyon gunj rahi hai dhadkan...

Kyon gunj rahi hai dhadkan...
