Mumbai: Veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle, who has lent her voice to more than 12,000 songs in over a dozen Indian and foreign languages, turned 77 on Wednesday.
Despite her illustrious career as a playback singer spanning over five decades, Asha remains a pillar of Indian music having sung pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional classical numbers, folk songs, qawalis and Rabindra Sangeet.
The evergreen singer who loves to keep pace with changing times joined microblogging site 'Twitter' a few months ago.
On her birthday today, wishes poured in from her fans and admirers from various walks of life.
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was among the first to extend the birthday wishes.
"Asha ji, janm divas ki dher sari shubhkamanayein..Aap swasth rahen aur sukhi sampann rahen yahi ishwar se prarthana hai,"(My best wishes on your birthday. May God keep you in good health and shower you with wealth and happiness)," he said.
Asha is celebrating her birthday in Singapore. Before leaving, she posted a message last night saying, "Friends, brothers & sisters: once again thank you for your well wishes & b'day greetings. Talk to you soon from Singapore."
Younger sister of another living legend Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle has sung at least in 1,000 Hindi films. She also holds the distinction worldwide of one of the singers having sung in most languages. Her repertoire includes songs in Hindi Assamese, Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, English, Russian, Czech, Nepali, Malay and Malayalam.
The expanse and range of her songs depict her amazing versatility and uniquely melodic voice. There are many popular numbers to her credit that remain unmatched despite myriad attempts to recreate, re-mix, re-spin her magic like Chura Liya Hai Tumne, Dum Maro Dum, In Ankhon Ki Masti, Dil Cheez Kya Hai among others.

She has crooned over 12,000 songs in 18 languages but aficionados of legendary singer Asha Bhosle can rejoice as one of her never released dance numbers from a shelved 1970s movie has been released online. Called Aaj Ki Shaam Pahloo Mein Tu, the seductive dance number was written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and recorded in the 1970s for a shelved film that was then tentatively titled Rehnuma.
Composed by late Madan Mohan, the song has an alternate tune for the antara and is available on the composer's website www.madanmohan.in. Four never before heard Asha Bhosle-Madan Mohan songs were also released last year in the album Tere Bagair. IANS

When singer-composer Abhishek Ray (Yeh Saali Zindagi, I Am Kalam) approached Asha Bhosle for a song in director Ananth Mahadevan’s film, Life’s Good, her immediate reaction was, “I’ve stopped singing for movies. I don’t like the kind of songs being written and scored today.”
Ray admits that he got a jhatka (shock), but he coaxed her into listening to the tune he had composed keeping her voice in mind. He played the first few notes for her over the phone, followed by the ‘mukhda’ (first stanza). Bhosle reacted with an abrupt, “Call me back after an hour.”
She called him back before the hour was up and sang what she had just heard. Then she demanded to hear the ‘antara’ (last stanza). Ray hummed it for her, pointing out that there was an interesting scale change from the ‘mukhda’ to the ‘antara’ that was uniquely western-classical. “That shift in scale appealed to her,” he says, adding that the solo number, ‘Rut bhege tan aayi thi…’ is not a typical Bollywood rain song.
“It’s more in the style of a western symphony with live violins, cellos, harps, a piano and Ashaji’s voice cutting across the concerto like an opera singer. The song is in the space of a ‘Circle of life…’ from The Lion King (1994) and Celine Dion’s ‘Life will go on…’ from Titanic (1997).”
Mahadevan, who is planning to wrap up the sensitive film, scripted by the late Sujit Sen, before he starts rolling with his bio-pic Gaur Hari Dastaan, is elated to have recorded with Bhosle: “I had seen Lataji (singer Lata Mangeshkar) record with Raj Kapoor for Prem Rog (1982) at Famous Studios in Tardeo. Last evening, at Yashraj Studios, it was a dream come true to have the other Mangeshkar sister, Ashaji, sing for one of my films.”
For Ray, it was a magical moment when Gulzar agreed to collaborate with him on Udhaas Paani in 2002. He says, “After almost a decade, just before hanging up, Ashaji told me, ‘Bahut badhiya’ (good work), that was another memorable moment. A compliment from an icon comes once in a lifetime.”

Former son-in-law on Asha Bhosle
Young at heart: Asha Bhosle
For Asha Bhosle, the 78-year-old singing genius, age is just a number. From teaming up with international artists like Brett Lee to giving acting a shot with Marathi film Maai, the veteran singer continues to inspire all generations. Every year, she adds to her unending body of songs with her melodious voice.
On her 78th birthday, Asha's former son-in-law Hemant Kenkre unravels the Asha he knew, during the time he spent with her. Hemant claims he still shares a wonderful personal equation with Asha and there is absolutely no bitterness or negativity. He was married to Asha's daughter Varsha Bhosle.
Secret of the magic in her voice
Apart from the voice, Asha Bhosle believes in putting soul to a song. For that she could go to any lengths. While doing Umrao Jaan, she read the novel first to understand what the character was all about. She was not much into ghazals before, but her research about the character for which she was singing was tremendous. I personally believe it was a huge challenge for her to do a song like that. Even today when you listen to Dil Cheez Kya Hai, you can feel there is a soul in the song.
Ready to go that extra mile
Her commitment to the work was unbelievable. It did not change with the names associated with her projects. For example, once she was returning from a studio after recording with a not-so-great musician. I was accompanying her, as it was a holiday. She suddenly said, "Maybe I should go back to the studio and give it another take. I think I can make it better," and then she drove right back to the studio.
Asha, the live wire
Seeing her perform is an experience in itself. If you see her live shows, she not only sings with a feel but her body language displays an array of emotions like sorrow, love, happiness perfectly.
Birthday plans
She is totally a family person. And she generally likes to celebrate her birthday with her family at home, except if she is abroad for work. I remember only one instance when a grand bash was organized for her birthday.
Living a simple life
She believes in leading a simple life. There is absolutely no extravagance. She is a family person. She is straightforward. She is also very honest and transparent person. She is such a very loving person. But if you challenge her, she can attack like a leopard. She is also very fond of children.
Age is just a number for Asha
She is 78, but still full of energy. Her enthusiasm has not waned with time. Imagine, at this age, she is ready to act in a film called Maai. Her dynamism inspires people. Her never-say-die spirit keeps her going.
A song that describes her the best
Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana - that's the kind of person she is. When she was young, she had such amazing stories to share. She is full of life. It's virtually like talking to an electric wire. She fought with the trials and tribulations of life easily. It is not easy to be doing all this alone.
Birthday Message from Hemant Kenkre
You are still the inspiration of people of my generation and of all generations. Happy birthday and have a great time.

Soon, the artistes of my ‘generation’ will take their place in the annals of time. What will remain for future ‘generations’ is their legacy and dedicated work in musical works like this album. I am happy to be featured on this album and I thank BIG Music for bringing us all together and for keeping melody alive in these dark ages of music. I hope that past, present and future ‘generations’ appreciate Generations.”

Veteran actor Sadhana and Asha Bhosle clash over garden
Mumbai, Mar 15, 2012, DHNS
Yesteryear’s Bollywood actor, Sadhana Nayyar is once again embroiled in a controversy with the bungalow of which she is a tenant.
This time it is the magnetic songstress Asha Bhosle who has moved an application against her, seeking that an FIR should be registered against the husky-voiced heroine for barring entry into the bungalow's garden.
Sadhana, a tenant for the past 50 years of the bungalow nestling in the tree-lined Ramkrishna Mission Street of posh Santacruz-Khar, stays on the ground floor with actress Baby Naaz, staying too as a tenant on the first floor. The two-storeyed bungalow called “Sangeeta”, is owned by the versatile vocalist Asha Bhosle.
Talking to Deccan Herald, Santacruz Police Station duty officer Sub-Inspector Mane on Thursday said, “Last month we had received an application from the singer against the actor. But we have not registered any case as of now. There are legalities involved in the matter and we will have to consult our legal experts before we move ahead with the case. It is a civil matter.”
Though the sub-inspector refused to divulge the contents of the complaint, it is learnt that the singer has alleged that the 68-year-old actor who set screens on fire with her dance and coy demure gaze “is an encroacher”.
The application, further states that the actor, “has even gone to the extent of stopping entry into the bungalow's garden not only to me but also to my servants...she is tenant of the ground floor but that does not give her a tenancy power over the garden. The garden was never let out to her. It has always been in my possession.”
The bungalow has been in the eye of the storm for the past few years. A couple of years ago Sadhana had sought police help alleging that builder Yusuf Lakdawala who stays on the second floor was threatening her with dire consequences so that she vacates the ground floor as he has been eyeing the place.

Asha Bhosle slaps legal notice against actress Sadhana
Singer Asha Bhosle has recently lodged a written complaint against yesteryear star Sadhana alleging that the actress had encroached upon her Khar bunglow in Mumbai. Sadhana has been Bhosle's tenant for over 50 years.
The complaint alleges that the actress is not allowing Bhosle to use her garden at the bungalow in suburban Khar in Mumbai city. Actress Sadhana has been known for her roles in movies like Mera Saya, Woh Kaun Thi and Hum Dono. Bhosle further wrote in her complaint that the garden was never let out to her. It has been under her domain.
In August 2010, Sadhana had filed a complaint against builder Yusuf Lakdawala for issuing death threats to her. She further alleged that Lakdawala forced her to leave the floor where she lives.
