Planet Bollywood

Atif Aslam´s ´Meri Kahani´

Atif Aslam, the Pakistani singer best known for a couple of super-hit and critically acclaimed Bollywood tracks (Woh Lamhe from Zeher and Tere Bin from Bas Ek Pal) has just released his second solo album called Meri Kahani. After his successful debut in Doorie last year, great expectations await this incredibly talented playback singer but can Meri Kahani build on Doorie and keep his fans happy until his next super-hit in Bollywood? (Incidentally the music here is by Pakistani composers Farhad Hamayun, Sheraz Siddiq, Shameer Shami, Mahmood Rehman and apparently Atif Aslam himself!).

Well on first listen it may disappoint especially if you compare it directly to the instantly catchy tracks from Doorie i.e. Doorie (title), Hum Kis Galli Ja Rahe Hain, and the superb Kuch Is Tarah...however give it a few listens, keep an open mind and you may eventually find a soundtrack more rewarding than his debut one.

You see Atif proves the versatility and impact in his vocals in Meri Kahani whereas one felt in Doorie, his vocals played almost second fiddle to catchy, in your face music. In Meri Kahani he is required to make a greater impact with his vocals to hold your attention against some fairly unspectacular (soft rock) music.

So does he succeed? Undoubtedly YES in my opinion! Maybe not in all the twelve tracks here (there are no remixes) but more than enough to warrant a purchase. Here are some of the highlights you can look forward to...

A deep breath from Atif ignites the title song Meri Kahani, co-written by the singer himself and one which turns out to be one of the best tracks here that won't require much listening before it connects with you. This pacey song is dominated by guitar strumming by Shahzad Hameed leaving Atif to add magic with his vocals and how he succeeds! Just listen out for his short verse with simultaneous vocals / supporting vocals midway through which is the highlight of this short but extremely enjoyable track.

Cries of agony greet you in Kinara, another rock based anthem that offers little originality in its drum orchestration or in the lyrics department (again written by the singer)- however Atif more than makes up for this with his singing which oozes confidence and subtlety belying the age or experience of the singer- overall another good listen.

Rabba Sacheya on the other hand tests Atif's Punjabi tongue and he pulls it off with aplomb! The main verses are slow (more guitar strumming this time by Sarmad Ghafoor) but as soon as he releases his lungs with 'rabb soniyan' at the cusp of the chorus, the music bursts into life and has your feet tapping in no time! As the song progresses he goes onto shows amazing ability to control high and low pitched vocals (and at the same time pacing them perfectly). This song was tailor made for Atif!

Arguably the best of the bunch however is the bewitching Man Hota Hai which is co-written and co-produced by Atif. This track puts his almost whisper quiet singing against the sole backdrop of a piano piece and how he delivers! Pay particular attention to the dexterity of his vocals, how they portray to great effect the sincerity, graveness and chilling sadness that the lyrics so demand....

Other recommended tracks include the addictive Chor Gayai, the sweet Humrahi, the subdued but extremely hip Mai Nee and his only duet of the entire soundtrack Kaun The (with S.K.J).

All in all, whilst nothing outstanding in the grand scheme of things, Meri Kahani is still highly recommended for any Atif fan and the general music loving public at large…There is more than enough variety on offer here that test the unquestionable talents of the singer and there is a good chance that on repeated listening you will find at least a few songs here to keep you happy until his next major Bollywood track, in fact it offers much more than Doorie which, whilst good itself, was filled with remixes.

What's more as a listener and music fan, it's great to see these individuals along with other upcoming solo artists such as Rahat Fateh Ali Khan (who incidentally has also just released his debut soundtrack Charkha) and Abhijeet (Junoon) release quality solo albums. It not only prolongs their career but keeps them in the picture of music directors and ultimately satisfies hungry listeners like you and me.

Above all, Atif proves the immense singing talents that preside across the border in Pakistan- he sits alongside Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and the brilliant band Strings all of whom have performed at the very top level in our beloved Bollywood. Expect more from this lot very soon!

Attributed with the hits Hum Kis Galli , Aadat, Woh Lamhey, Doorie and Tere Bin. Formerly lead singer of Jal.

Early life

At the age of 9, he shifted to Islamabad where he continued his studies in Saint Pauls School. Atif came back to Lahore in 1995 where he continued his studies in Divisional Public School Model Town. He was selected in his school cricket team as a bowler. He was putting his best efforts to become a professional cricketer.

Atif started his HSc in PAF College, Lahore. During his college life he became interested in music. His eldest brother had a collection of more than 8,000 songs in almost all music genres. He developed a habit of listening to all kinds of music at his house. He was a quick learner and soon grasped the control of his voice. Up to this time he was not interested in singing. His passion was to be in the Pakistan cricket team as a fast bowler. He practiced at the nets at Shapes club in Lahore where Imran Khan used to give tips on bowling to him.

Music career

One day he was singing with his friends at the college canteen. His friends urged him to participate in the singing competition on Independence Day celebrations at PAF College Lahore and Sargodha in 1998. He performed there and won the competition. After HSc, Atif joined Punjab Institute of Computer Science Gulberg Campus. He was not able to give time to cricket due to his busy study schedule here.

His hobby of singing continued with him entering the singing competition of his college. There were a total of 8 participants. The media team entered Atif's name in the competition at the eleventh hour. He won the competition by singing the hit number Duur of Strings. He kept on winning these competitions every semester until he announced that he will no longer participate in them so that someone else can also win the competition.

He met Goher at his college. Goher was a talented guitarist. Together they practiced a lot and started doing mini concerts for their friends. Atif used to perform Junoon and Strings songs at these concerts. They started performing in their college, McDonalds and other restaurants as well.

Atif recorded the legendary song Aadat at Mekal Hassan's Studio. Mekal injected his professionalism in the song to make it worth listening time after time. Atif formed the band Jal, which means water. The song became popular on different musical websites in Pakistan. The song was also being on aired on major Radio channels of Pakistan like FM 100, FM 105 etc. Video for this song got released in December on Ary The Music and then it was played on almost all the channels.

Atif released his first album Jal Pari on 18th July 2004 by Sound Master and IC records. It was declared to be the best selling album of the year within just 5 months of the release.[citation needed] In the meantime Atif also cleared his Bachelors in Computer Science (hons) from University of Central Punjab.

Controversy

After the release of the song Aadat by Jal, there were disputes within the band about Atif's brother being the band's manager. At this point Atif broke off from the band to do his own solo album. Jal released their album (including the song Aadat) after Atif left the band. Atif then released the same song on his album and this caused a case in the Pakistan Court System which went in favor of Jal. Atif was barred from releasing any albums for a year and a half after the incident. To this day it is still not known whether the rights to the song belong truly to Atif or Jal as with many other Jal songs.

When asked at a concert for Geo Tv who really composed Aadat, Jal's Goher Mumtaz replied that he cant say but that when both parties release subsequent albums it will become apparent.

Popular Songs

Woh Lamhe - from the movie Zeher. This song did a business of more than $1,000,000 in India. This song opened the doors of bollywood for Atif and he is now one of the few singers of the nation who are doing play back singing in bollywood.

Aadat - from the movie Kalyug
Mahi ve
Doorie
Kuch Is Tarah
Jaine Kaise - from the movie Raqeeb2006

His three songs Aaadat, Ehsaas and Yakeen were included in a Hollywood art movie Man Push Cart. The film had its world premiere at the 2005 Venice Film Festival. The film entered the "official selection" of the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and won the Fipresci Critic's Award at the London Film Festival.

Muhammad Atif Aslam was born on 12th march 1983 in Wazirabad Gujranwala. Atif's kinder garden started in Model town Lahore at Kimberley Hall School. His first stage manifestation was in a fancy dress show at his school when he was in grade–1 where he performed as Imran Khan “ Captain of Pakistan Cricket Team”. Since then cricket was like a passion to him. He was never tired of playing cricket for hours in his car porch whether it is scorching sun outside or even raining. At that time he did not use to listen any kind of songs.

At the age of 9 in 1991 he shifted to Rawalpindi/Islamabad where he continued his studies in Saint Pauls School. He started playing Basket Ball and he used to lead his school team for matches. Atif came back to Lahore in 1995 where he continued his studies in Divisional Public School Model Town. For his immense passion for cricket he was selected in his school team as a fast bowler. Atif cleared his 10th grade in 14 years of age with a distinctive edge that he has always been the youngest boy in the class because of his double promotions while he was in Kimberley Hall.

Atif started his HSc in PAF College Lahore. Cricket was all the times with him. He was in his college team as well, where he presented his college in other cities. Beside his studies, he was putting his maximum time in practicing for professional cricket.

During his college life he came across with some interest in music. His eldest brother was having a collection of more than 8,000 songs of almost all music genres. Un-intentionally he was developing a habit of listening to all kinds of music in his house. As a good learner he quickly grasped the control of voice but till that time he was not interested in singing, his passion was to enter in Pakistan cricket team as a fast bowler and he was right on track while practicing at the net at Shapes club Lahore where Imran Khan used to come and give tips to him for bowling.

His friends insisted him to participate in the singing competition on Independence Day celebrations at PAF College Lahore and Sargodha in 1998. He performed there and won the competition. After HSc Atif Joined Punjab Institute of Computer Science Gulberg Campus. This time studies were much more demanding as compared to the previous ones. He had to sacrifice his time for the cricket.

His hobby of singing continued when he entered the singing competition of his college. There were a total of 8 participants .The media team entered Atif's name in the competition at the eleventh hour and he won the competition by singing a hit number Duur of Strings Band

He kept on winning these competitions every semester until he announced that he will no longer participate in next competitions so that someone else can also win the competition.

He encountered Goher at his college who had good interest in Music & was a good, talented guitarist. Together they used to practice a lot and started doing mini concerts for their friend. Atif used to sing Junoon's and String's songs at the concerts. The volume of cheers of audience kept on increasing. They performed concerts for their college, McDonalds and some other restaurants as well.

Atif recorded the legendary song “AADAT” at Mekal Hassan's Studio. Mekal injected his professionalism in the song to make it worth listening time after time. Atif formed the band and named the band as “JAL” which means water, the essence of life. The song got popularity on different musical websites on Pakistan. The song was also being on aired on major Radio channels of Pakistan like FM100, FM 105 etc.

“Umer Anwar” from Karachi approached Atif for making the video of “AADAT”. Aadat's video was shot in one day in a warehouse at Karachi. The basic theme of the video was to attract people to listen to this song, which will vanish their sorrows and then make them happy.

A girl who acted as an angel in the video was distributing this message to people to listen to this song. Atif was making waves in the industry. God has been very very kind to Atif. By the Grace of God his video was released in December on “ARY THE MUSIC” and then it rocked almost all the channels.

Atif released his first album Jal Pari on 18th July 2004 all over the nation by the country's leading record label, Sound Master and IC records & Alhumdolillah the results declared it as the best selling album of the year within just 5 months of the release and it is still continuing. Because of the eternal mercifulness of Allah who gave the kind of continuous love of people to Atif , lime light, interviews, fans, autographs, snaps, concerts, get-togethers, traveling all came to him at once and Atif was really stretched up for all this because in the mean time he had the final exams of BCS and he cleared his Bachelorz in Computer Science ( hons) from University of Central Punjab.

Performing live is the real test of any singer and Alhumdolillah people believe that Atif is one of the best live singers in the nation. Atif has done hundreds of live shows with local as well as international artists all over the globe for a lot of brands.

Atif's song WOH LAMHEY which he sang for the Bollywood movie “ Zeher” in 2005 is being considered among the ten best ever green songs of the Bollywood industry doing a business of One million Dollar plus only in India in terms of sales. This song opened the doors of bollywood for Atif and he is now one of the few singers of the nation who are doing play back singing in bollywood which is indeed a national pride for us. His 2nd song in bollywood “Aadat” made people addicted to his voice in the biggest nation of the world. Third song “Teray Bin” is also being considered as one of the most touching and heart melting numbers of the year 2006.

One of the most rare distinctions which atif earned for Pakistan was that his 3 songs “ Aaadat , Ehsaas and Yakeen were included in a Hollywood art movie “ MAN PUSH CART”. The movie got tremendous response in international film festivals and won FEPRISKI award in Europe

Atif has been nominated for a number of awards internationally during his short career which is again a matter of pride for the nation. His song Who Lamhay made him nominated as best singer for 2005 in almost all the film awards of bollywood including Film Fare Awrads , Zee Cine Awards , IIFA Awards etc etc . Some of the awards he has won are as under:

Pakistani singer Atif Aslam
Ritujaay Ghosh

He's been into Hindi playback singing for nearly two years now. His reper toire of hits has made him a favourite choice with composers here. His songs for Race, Pehli nazar mein is on the top of the charts.

And he recently released his third solo album, Meri Kahaani. Tuning into Atif Aslam: Where did you disappear after Aadat and Tere bin? I was working on Meri Kahaani. It was long overdue and took a lot of my time. I was flooded with offers for playback singing but I'm not the kind who runs after quantity. I sing only those songs that touch my heart and bingo! I've never made a wrong choice. Tell me something about the chart topper from Race. Pehli nazaar mein has elements of rock. I knew it would soar to great heights. I've always enjoyed singing soft rock numbers. Yeah, most of your albums have a the soft rock feel. You could say that. Meri Kahani is a shade different though because of the lyrics. It's typically Pakistani. Meaning ? Well, the songs are more hard-hitting than those from my previous albums. They speak of the unrest in Pakistan and the political turmoil the country is going through.

That's why I've titled it Meri Kahani. Today, even youngsters don't have time for themselves. The title track is about how I grew up, almost overnight. How did the lyrics evolve? Definitely. It is about bringing peace back to the land. There's also a song on drugs called Suroor. It's about how drugs turn a boy into an addict.

Did the lyrics take a long time to write?

They took a lot of thinking. I had to cut down on concerts for a while. But I will soon start my U S tour.

I have another album in the pipeline. It is like a sequel to Doori with elements of pop. I'll have to juggle my Bollywood assignments to get it done.

From Pakistan, with love
It has taken 43 years for a Pakistani film, Khuda Ke Liye, to be released on Indian shores. But this is not the first time Pakistan has contributed to the Indian entertainment industry.

Pakistani actors like Javed Sheikh and Meera, and singers like Atif Aslam and Adnan Sami, have been working in India for quite some time. We take a look at the prominent Pakistani stars, who have captured the Indian film, television and music industry.

Atif Aslam

Atif was a part of the popular Pakistani band, Jal, which gave us hit songs from albums, Aadat and Boondh.

Later, he quit the band and came to India. He gained instant stardom with his song, Woh Lamhe from the film, Zeher. His other songs -- Aadat in Mahesh Bhatt's production, Kalyug and Tere Bin in Onir's Bas Ek Pal have huge hits too.

Pehli Nazar from the film, Race, has added to his list of hit songs.

His songs from private albums, like Doorie, Hum Kis Gali and Kuch Is Tarah have done very well too.

Atif Aslam (Urdu: عاطف اسلم) is a Pakistani musician. He was born in Wazirabad, Gujranwala on March 12, 1983 and was educated in Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Early life

Atif’s kindergarten started in Model town Lahore at Kimberley Hall School. His first stage manifestation was in a fancy dress show at his school when he was in grade 1 where he performed as Imran Khan, the former captain of Pakistan's national cricket team. Since then cricket was like a passion to him. He was never tired of playing cricket for hours in his car porch whether it is scorching sun outside or even raining. At that time he was not used to listen any kind of songs. At the age of 9 in 1991 he was shifted to Rawalpindi/Islamabad where he continued his studies in Saint Paul's School. He started playing Basketball and he use to lead his school team for various matches. He was in his college team as well where he presented his college in other cities. Beside his studies he was putting his maximum time in practicing for the professional cricket. During his college life he come across with some interest in music. He attended Punjab Institute of Computer Science (PICS) to do his Bachelors in Computer Science (BCS). Aslam's eldest brother owned a collection of more than 8,000 songs of almost all music genres, from which Atif absorbed a wide range of music at home. As a good learner he quickly grasped the control of voice, though at that time he was not interested in singing. Aslam's passion was still to enter the Pakistani cricket team as a fast bowler and he was right on track while practicing at the net at the Shapes Club Lahore where Imran Khan used to come and give tips to him for bowling.

Start of Musical Career

The twist in the story comes when one day he was singing with his friends at the college canteen. His friends insisted him to participate in the singing on Independence Day celebrations at PAF College Lahore and Sargodha in 1998. He performed there and won the competition. After HSc, Atif Joined Punjab Institute of Computer Science Gulberg Campus. This time studies were much more demanding as compared to the previous ones. He was forced to sacrifice his time playing cricket in order to do well in school. However, his hobby of singing continued when he entered in the singing competition of his college, where there were a total of 8 participants. The media team entered Atif’s name in the competition at the eleventh hour and he won the competition singing a hit number of Pakistani band Strings' Duur.

Jal The Band

Aslam kept winning these competitions every semester until he announced that he would not participate in future competitions so that someone else could also win. He found Goher Mumtaz, a talented guitarist, at this time. Together, they started doing mini concerts for their friends. Atif used to primarily sing songs from Junoon and Strings song at these concerts. The size of the audiences kept on increasing. They performed concerts for their college, McDonalds and some other restaurants as well. Atif recorded the legendary song Aadat at Mekal Hassan’s Studio. Mekal injected his professionalism in the song to make it worth listening time after time. Atif formed the band and named the band as Jal, which means water, the essence of life. The song got popularity on the different musical websites on Pakistan. . The song was also played on such Pakistani radio stations as FM100 and FM105. The music video for Aadat was shot one day in a warehouse in Karachi. Soon it came out to be a super hit, topping the Pakistani music charts. On the base of this one song, “Jal” began their tour of Pakistan—such was the strength of “Aadat”. However, whilst on tour, personal problems led to a verbal bust-up resulting in an unannounced and indefinite hiatus, during which Atif launched his solo career.

Solo career

"Jal Pari"

Atif Aslam, after leaving Jal, released a new solo album, Jal Pari (meaning "Mermaid") which was a big hit. Other than Aadat, 'Dil Harey', 'Woh Lamhey', 'Yakeen' became favourites of Pakistani music fans. Though his songs were liked by many, his first solo music video of 'Mahi ve' did not received much praise. On the other hand Jal, with their album "Aadat" and hit music video "Woh Lamhay" emerged as one of the top bands of Pakistan. As both the Jal, “Aadat”, and Atif’s album, Jalpari, shared certain tracks (such as “Aadat”, “Wo Lamhey”, “Dil Harey”) an unofficial war over rights began which resulted in both sides claiming to possess hard proof to support their respective claims (that, they alone owned the concerned songs). The hype this feud gave to both Atif and the new Jal was extraordinary and split the musical nation with the fans of each side backing their respective favourite.

Across The Border

Whilst the drama of lyrics & composition ownership continued in Pakistan, Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt called Atif Aslam to seek his consent to include "Woh Lamhey" in the soundtrack of his new motion picture, Zeher (2005). The song (especially the remix version) became a hit & dominated airplay on almost all major FM stations throughout India for a period of 6-8 months. This pattern of a slow playback song by Atif in the movie, supplemented by a remix version released for radio airplay was to become standard procedure with Atif’s songs on the Indian market.

He recorded a song for the movie Kalyug (2005), entitled Juda Hokey Bhi - a slight variation of the ever famous Aadat song. Like with “Wo Lamhey / Bheegi Yaadein”, a slow version became the theme for the movie and part of the official soundtrack, whilst a remixed version was released to hit the radio stations and desi clubs worldwide.

After recording for Kalyug, an Irani director in Hollywood contacted Atif and within very little time, Atif recorded three songs for that same director’s Hollywood movie, Man Push Cart and was rewarded with a small cameo role in the movie.

Atif re-emerged in the subcontinent with a new track, “Tere Bin” (translation: [Without You]) for the Bollywood Movie, Bas Ek Pal (2006). The song "Tere Bin" became a hit in India and Pakistan.

"Doorie"

In December 2006, Atif Aslam released his much anticipated album called "Doorie" along with the video of the title song "Doorie" in India and Pakistan. Some of the songs in the album include "Hum kis galli", "Maula", "O re piya". The album was produced in collaboration with Indian lyricists and composers. A month later the video of "Hum kis galli" was released. Like the video of "Doorie", it was shot in India. The album is a huge hit in both countries, especially India.

"Hungaami Halaat"

The Bollywood style of music and videos in "Doorie" has diappointed many of Atif's fans in Pakistan who had been liking Atif for his "Jal Pari" style songs. About this Atif said "Touring internationally made me think that I should take my music global by releasing it worldwide. I collaborated with a lot of people and thought up a plan for a commercial album, which is not my type of music; which is not ATIF. I just wanted to explore that side of the music. When I composed and wrote these songs for Doorie, I kept in mind that this album has to be commercial". He also told that he would soon be releasing an album named "Hangami Halaat" which would be an original 'atif style' album. Regarding his videos he says "I think that was a requirement because the Indian audience can never accept my 'stupid' 'Mahi Vey' video or my 'stupid' 'Rangoun Mein' video. They have a different concept about a pop or a rock icon. He has to be a heart throb. Girls here can't sit on motor bikes, in India girls ride them. It's a different culture altogether. They (my Indian videos) are for an international audience."

Controversies

Controversies began surrounding Atif from the beginning of his solo career. Many of Atif's critics accused him of stealing songs from former band mate Gohar Mumtaz. Both Atif and Gohar laid claim on songs like "Aadat", "Dil Harey", "Woh Lamhey" and "Zindagi". Still noone knows whose creations actually these songs are.

Atif Aslam of the 'Woh Lamhe' and 'Tere Bin' fame has become the youngest Pakistani pop star to receive the 'Tamgha-e-Imtiaz', a civilian award given for doing the Pakistan proud globally. The musician, who has been a huge hit in India since he sang "Woh Lahme" which was picturized on Bollywood's Emran Hashmi, showed up in a black sherwani to receive the award from the Punjab Governor on Pakistan Day on March 23rd. Aslam, who has performed in about 25 countries in 2007, says that he got the award because he represented Pakistan a lot this year outside the country. That's what the 'Tamgha-e-Imtiaz' stands for. It's awarded to people who make Pakistan proud globally.

Significantly, Aslam has friends as well as critics in India. While Bollywood's sultry actress Bipasha Basu is crazy on Aslam, the Indian singers including Sunidhi Chauhan and Abhijeet criticise Pakistani pop singer and claim that Aslam cannot sing! Aslam doesn't contest the Indian singers' criticism and admits that he has never claimed that he can sing. He says, "I never said I can sing. Look, unlike these guys I have no professional training and I always say that I cannot sing. I agree I cannot sing. What's amazing is that I've made a career out of doing something I can't do," Aslam adds. Asked about joining Bollywood, Aslam said, "I have offers but am waiting for the right script, no matter how clichéd that sounds. Right now my music career is going great." Incidentally, Shoaib Mansoor whose critically acclaimed film 'Khuda Kay Liye' on the life of Muslims in the post-9/11 era releasing in India on 4th April was given Pakistan's highest civilian award, the "Sitara-i-Imtaiz".

CANDID CROONER: Sunidhi thinks Atif Aslam is one of the most overrated singers today.

She is a powerhouse of talent. A singer with a voice so versatile that she’s sung for everyone from Kareena Kapoor to Rekha. Injecting energy and spirit into her music, she turns even ordinary songs into chartbusters.

She made her first big splash with song Ruki Ruki Si Zindagi from the movie Mast and hasn't looked back since then. She is the very gifted Sunidhi Chauhan.

Rajeev Masand: Sunidhi, welcome to the show and thank you so much for joining us today.

Sunidhi Chauhan: Thank you.

Rajeev Masand: With your hit song from the film Race, the New Year started off with a bang for you, didn't it? It's a song that has been filmed on not one but three very hot actresses. You've given some of the top Bollywood actresses some of their sexiest songs. Do they ever come to you to thank you for making them sound so sexy on screen?

Sunidhi Chauhan: They are all very sweet but hardly any of them come and say thank you. However, whenever Lara Dutta meets me she says, "You know I still perform on Jadoo Daala Re and it so well sung." So you know there are very few people but it is okay. It is not their fault because sometimes they don’t even know who sang the song. Most of the time while recording even we aren’t aware of who the song will be picturised on.

Rajeev Masand: Sunidhi, 2007 was an interesting year for you. You sang for Madhuri Dixit’s comeback film Aaja Nachle. You also gave us one of the most popular songs of 2007 – Sajna Di Vari Vari from Honeymoon Travels. Yet when it came to awards, most of them went to your rival, you contemporary Shreya Ghosal for her song in Guru. Any hard feelings?

Sunidhi Chauhan: Not at all. I am happy to have a nomination, and I had two of them in all the awards. That’s enough for me. My award is when I perform on stage, when people see me, they buy tickets and come, and have a blast. And I’m not being filmi about it. I’m telling you the truth. Yes, awards are important. They give you a boost to work better, but if they don’t come around then it’s okay. At least my name was announced twice. I got the award the year before that so there has to be a break.

Rajeev Masand: You're only 24 and you've been professionally singing for nine years now. What do you think is it about your voice that makes you such a popular singer with composers at a time when there are new singers coming and going every week, and especially when all these reality shows are giving us new singers every other day?

Royal Albert Hall Concert Review

This year "2007" has turned out to be a very significant year for me as GOD has been very kind to me; first of all with the success of Doorie and then with the opportunity of performing in the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, London.

I thank all you Aadeez for all your prayers and support that you have always given me so now I would like to share these special memories with all of you.

Royal Albert Hall is the most prestigious place in Europe for a concert. Only legendary artists from around the globe have performed there and so when the organizers approached us for the event, it surely made us feel honored and excited that we were going to be apart of such an important event. The only Pakistani artists that have performed over there till now have been Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib and Junoon.

The show was announced in United Kingdom just one month before the actual date. The show was on 14th April 2007 and the promoters carried on their promotion campaigns giving the show the publicity it well deserved.

Our First meeting with the promoter, Mr. Razzaq who by profession is an Immigration lawyer in UK was in Islamabad and we were surprised to know the sad fact that he is blind. He has not let this fact cause any kind of hindrance to his professional life and we were astonished to see the amount of confidence he had, to take up such a huge responsibility. While Razzaq Bhai's team ( Raj, Koyes, Tanya and Shakeel) were gearing up for the concert in London, he came all the way from UK specially to arrange our visas. Razzaq Bhai is surely an exceptional person with great perception.

As the date of the show approached closer, excitement filled the air but along with that came certain amount of uncertainties and stress too but till 11th April which was just three days before the event we didn't have visas, work permits and airline booking and that was becoming an issue of concern.

On 11th April we went to the UK Embassy. After our interviews we all came out while Razzaq Bhai and Mobeen had to wait as his passport arrived later. It was at this time that Razzaq Bhai decided to play a practical joke with us and he called from inside the Embassy saying "All of us have got visas except for Atif so please send Atif back inside so that we could try to get his visa too". We all were very worried and perplexed wondering how come they refused to issue a visa for the main vocalist. Having just a day left, we began to wonder if we would actually be able to make it for the show.

As I walked back to the Embassy from the parking a lot of thoughts rushed through my head but after about 30 minutes when I came out, I surely had a smile on my face. All the band members asked me " what happened?" and I said " woh ander UK Embassy k staff ko autographs chahiye thay and Razzaq Bhai believed k I will not go back for autographs so he played a practical joke". It lightened up the atmosphere and everyone burst out into laughter.

Alhumdolillah we got our visas that day, the very next day got our work permits and proctors too. Now we just had a day to book our tickets to fly to London. Another roller coaster began when we got to know that due to the Easter holidays there was tremendous amount of air traffic and there were no seats available. But luckily and thanks to our travel agents; they managed to make an indirect connection on two airline carriers.

The schedule was Lahore- Dubai- Zurich- London and we all were waiting at the airport two hours before our flight but we still hadn't received our tickets from our travel agents who were actually suppose to be there before us. Exactly one hour before our departure Razzaq Bhai and the travel agent arrived with our tickets and then our journey had begun.

We reached Dubai and the flight crew brought to our knowledge that there was a possibility that our luggage would not reach London with us as there was a very short margin time between the two connecting flights. This again was another moment of anxiety as Sameer and Sarmad had their guitar pedals in the same luggage which they required while playing in the concert.

As we were again checking-in for our connecting flight, we got the news that our luggage had arrived safely which was a sense of relief for everyone. The Swiss airline crew were absolutely hospitable and went out of their ways to make it a memorable flight for us.

We reached London at 12 noon on the day of the concert and we actually couldn't believe that it all finally happened. While Shahbaz's and Sheraz's luggage didn't arrive on time and they dint get a chance to change into a different attire for the concert but all of us were certainly glad to have reached London on time.

After the long 16 hour flight all of us were totally worn out but the sight of Royal Albert Hall instantly energized us .Royal Albert Hall was built in early 20th century and it is complimenting the traditional London style of the royal building architecture. All the music legends of the world have performed there including Sting, Elton John, George Michael, Celine Dion, Micheal Jackson, Shania Twain and so many more. It surely is an honor for an artist to be able to perform there. The Hall has also been hosting the world boxing championships and the Miss World Event also commenced in the same royal ambience. The Hall has a special chamber which is reserved for the Queen of UK.

Normally on various concerts and shows our crew does a sound check of just about thirty minutes but for the Royal Albert Hall everyone was determined to give it their best so when we began our sound check, the entire crew was absolutely energized and they were enjoying every moment of it so much that the sound check continued for three hours without a break. It was an overwhelming experience for me and I enjoyed it enormously. I also enjoyed the professionalism of the way every detail in the hall was organized. Right from the lights, to sound systems and ofcourse the ambience was all perfection at its best.

The hour finally arrived and the show began. It commenced with some dress show, local dance artists and Juggy D. I had a time slot of ninety minutes but as usual the fans kept screaming my name and holding posters with worderful messages right from the beginning itself. As we watched the show on live monitors back stage it made the entire crew more anxious and energized to make the concert a memorable one for all.

There were 4500 people in the hall. Allhumdolilah the show was completely sold out. When they announced my entry on stage there was a five minutes break and all the lights went off so we could get our sound plugs in and be all set.

Wearing a Samurai outfit that was specially designed for the event by Shahbaz I went on stage with a huge explosion of fireworks on the center of stage holding a Samurai sword in my hand which I eventually kept on the stage when I started performing.

The Samurai sword was sharp and it brutally cut my fingers during rehearsals. The entire track list was predecided and totally rehearsed by the entire band members. So finally we had Sarmad on lead guitar, Mobeen on drums, Sameer on Bass guitars and Sheraz on the keyboard.

Alhumdolillah the crowd gave us a fabulous response and everyone was dancing with an ecstatic expression. Even the security guards shook a leg or two. The songs that got the maximum response were doorie, teray bin, bheegi yaadein, mahiya way soniya and mahi way.

I dedicated "teray bin" to a fan who was holding the banner of "tere bin". I also jumped into the crowd to make them feel livelier. The Lighting was complimenting the music beats. The fireworks kept adding an ardor to the performance. At the end I introduced my band members to the crowd and the crowd gave them a good round of applause too.

After the concert there was a long autograph session backstage and then we all went back on stage. This was the most satisfying moment for all of us that by the grace of Allah we actually performed at the prestigious hall and having got such an overwhelming response from the crowd. All of us hugged each other very strongly and it surely was a very emotional moment. We thanked God, for this success.

I still remember when once some one asked Junoon what was the most proud moment of their career and Salman replied "when we performed at Royal Albert Hall". Junoon accomplished it after ten years from the moment they began but God gave me this opportunity in the fourth year of my career MASHALLAH. So this truly has been an incredible experience for all of us.

Later, all of us were taken to a "Lahore Restaurant" which reminded us of home. Finally after forty hours of restlessness, anxiety and the feel of triumph we had a good sleep. The next morning Sarmad woke us up and being the ex resident of London for 15 years decided to show us around town. While having a look around we saw hoardings of the concert which reminded us of the wonderful audience we had.

As the day went on we all went our ways shopping and exploring the beautiful city. While shopping in the Blue Water Mall a cute little fan "Sara" gave me a beautiful twelve string guitar which I will cherish always. The next morning we received loads of congrats from various parts of the world and emails about the show. We left for Pakistan the very next morning with some really beautiful memories of London, particularly the walk in the mid night while it rained near the river on the empty roads and racing on the central London streets.

Thanks to my Big Brother for the wonderful photographs.

So you guys enjoy the pics and post your reviews. We will also be uploading

Some more tour pics so have fun.

Thank you all Aadeez for your prayers and support.

Your very own.

Atif.
