Post Bappi Lahiri

Noted music composer and playback singer Bappi Lahiri has been riding high on success. Following his chartbuster in Milan Luthria's Taxi Number 9211, the singer's flagging popularity has suddenly revived. The singer was even recently invited by A R Rahman to render a track for Mani Ratnam's forthcoming film Guru. “Yes, I have sung the title track for Mani Ratnam's Guru,” says Bappi, who has just returned from Chennai after recording the song.

“It was fantastic,” he says. “I've known Rahman for ages. I met him for the first time when I was composing a song for my film Himmatwala. Even then he was different from the lot. His music was not run-of-the-mill. In fact,... ... the Indian audience lacked the ear to appreciate his type of composition. But I was sure that someday he would be the best. I will openly admit that in today's generation of composers, he is the best,” says Bappi.

The song for the film has been written by Gulzar. “It was an honour to sing that song. I am a huge fan of Gulzar saab and I admire the way in which he has evolved over the years. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the lyrics of his ‘Kajra re’,” says Bappi. Incidentally, Bappi got a call from A R Rahman inviting him to his studio in Chennai. “I was surprised to see the kind of homework he did before calling me. He was sure about what he wanted from me. The recording was over in just one night. It is a seven-minute song, and they are going to use it in the credit scroll, with graphics,” reveals the singer. But he refused to divulge the lyrics of the song. “Now that's not my department. You'll have to ask Rahman or Gulzarji for the information,” he states.

Ratnam was not present during the recording of the song. “I spoke to him after I came back to Mumbai. I think he has already heard the song and he is happy with the final output,” says Bappi. It seems that Bappi's second innings will see him more active in singing playback for other composers. “Not exactly. I am very fussy as a singer. So whoever signs me has to put up with my tantrums. But I call it my creative liberty. And Rahman was at ease; he would just let me be. I have decided that if I get good offers and interesting tracks to sing, I won't think twice. I have realised that life can rock even if you are nearing 50,” he admits.

Now Bappi is looking forward to his son Bappa’s career. “He is more talented than I am. At his age, I was not as perfect as he is today. He will be a much better music composer than me, and I will be proud to be called ‘Bappa's father’ someday,” says the doting dad.

• I am very fussy as a singer. So whoever signs me has to put up with my tantrums. But I call it my creative liberty – Bappi Lahiri

Our favorite Disco King, Bappi Lahiri will soon be making a unique debut. He will be seen in a mobile game. Named Bappi Da Disco King, it should be available by the end of the month. It was after much research, that it was decided that mobile game lovers would love the idea of Bappi Lahiri in a game. The character in the game is complete with gold chains, bracelets and the works.

The concept of the game is that he has to collect his jewelry before a concert. Bappi is quite satisfied with the end result. In fact, what will add to the appeal of the game is that Bappi has composed a tune for the background. So Bappi fans sure have something to look forward to. rd to.

Music now for netas, not abhinetas

NOT to miss the chunky gold chains or heavy Bengali accent. Bappi da, the man who brought disco to Bollywood, is happy churning out political tunes these days.

Taking his foray into politics rather seriously, Bappi Lahiri's political tunes in his latest album, Ghungta, are taking him places. Having wooed the electorate in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi, Bappi da claims that his political tunes helped swing votes in favour of the Congress candidates.

Mujhko Tu Neta Bana De has a humorous lilt to it with the musician praying to the Almighty to make everybody a neta so that they can serve the masses. Bappi da says that this song speaks of the common man’s dreams for a better life. "The political arena is the biggest stage, and people are hooked to all its high drama. The video has been so created that people can relate to it ," he says.

Ask him of about his hit number and he breaks into the song, Janta Ki Maang Soniaji. The album from the Universal Music's stable has eight tracks, including Ghungta Tha and Dilli Mein Dhunda.

Talking of the projects in hand, Bappi da, who had the nation swaying to the lilting tunes of Sharaabi in the 80s, says that he is doing projects with K.C . Bokadia and Harsh Kohli, besides Mithun Chakravorthy.

Bappi took to music at a very young age. He had his first music recital at the age of four and received his first major award around that time in Calcutta. Making his foray into the world of film music in 1969 with Bengali Film, Dadu, Bapp da rose to win international acclaim and had the likes of pop-king Michael Jackson personally inviting him for his first live performance in Mumbai in 1996.

Bappi Da has done more than 500 shows all over the world.

He won his first Filmfare Award for Sharaabi in 1987 and has got more than 300 other awards in the last 25 years, including a National Award and The Golden Lotus Award for producing the Best Feature Film, Lal Darja. He also presented a film based on Rock-Dancing, Rock Dancer, for which he invited Samantha Fox to do a dance number opposite Govinda.

A pioneer in introducing fusion music in Hindi films with the Namak Halaal song Pagh Ghunghroo Baandh Meera Naachi Re, Bappi's never stuck to a particular style.

" I believe in leading the brat pack. So each time you get a different music score from me," he adds

James Bong and Chingdi Macher Guptho
MIthun da's latest flick runs into controversy..Da vinci style.
Jun 29 2006

Bappi movies Mithun sharapova

Dan Brown's Da Vinci code has become a controversial block buster.Taking inspiration from him my new post is about the doyen of Indian cinema, the true Bonga bandhu yup the irrepressible Mithun Da.Mithun Da has been the greatest enigma of India of course Rajnikanth and Balakrishna run him close but there is no one like Mithun Da.

His is a true example of sacrifice. He who won 3 national awards decided to shun such roles for the Mahsses and has given the Indian industry gems like Truck Driver Sooraj,Panther,Jallad,Sanyasi mera naam, etc etc.His latest film James Bong and Chingdi Macher Guptho Code (Prawn fish secret code) has been banned by the Bengal Govt. The film stars Mithun as a very original spy ,James Bong, who is called to investigate a 26 year old cover up by the Communist regime. The film has the following revelations which has the communists sweating.

1. The biggest cover up in Bengali history - Chingdi Mach is not fish at all its a crustacean.

2. The greatest musician of Bengal Bappi Da is actually an alien.

3. The communist party is a political party and not a religon.

As Mithun da slugs it out with the censors we all should pray for its release...or at least in true Mithun style say....Ayyyyyyyyyyyyye Saaaaaaaaaaaaalah.

Bappi Lahiri sets a new record with Lata Mangeshkar

It's an astonishing feat, and only a composer of Bappi Lahiri's zingy spirit could pull it off.

Says the ebullient Bappi-da "Lata Didi who recorded songs for my father Aparesh Lahiri also sang some of my most beautiful ballads including Saiyyan bina ghar soona(Aangan Ki Kali ), Jaane kyon mujhe(Agreement), Dard ki ragini(Pyaasa) and Sooni Sej sajaa doon(Jyoti) and of course the song Thoda resham lagta hai which became a huge international re-mix hit. Now, Lata Didi will record a song for my son Bappa."

Bappi is naturally very proud. "There have been many instances of Lata Didi singing for father and son composers, like Sachin Dev & Rahul Dev Burman, Roshan & Rajesh Roshan and Chitragupta & Anand-Milind. But never has she sung for a third -generation composer from the same family  or any family. I feel very very blessed."

Bappi-da currently in the news for his presence as a star-judge on the popular Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs music show, is suddenly very much in demand as a singer. In the last few months he has recorded as many as 15 songs in 15 days for music directors as far-ranging as Vishal-Shekhar and debutant Nitin Shankar for whom Bappi-da has sung for a film called Bombay To Goa.

"Earlier I'd sing only my own songs. Now suddenly, new-generation music composers want my vocals. What can I say? But my proudest moment came when I sang for my song Bappa Lahiri for an untitled film being produced by Sanjay Gupta. It was a very big moment for me, because I had sung for my father and now I got to sing for my son. I don't think any composer had the privilege to sing for both his father and son."

The only other occasion when a father-composer got to sing for his son was when Sachin Dev Burman sang Doli mein bithaiyeeke for R.D in Amar Prem.

Post Re: Bappi Lahiri

Bappi Lahiri Javed Akhtar once said, "Have you ever heard a Bappi Lahiri song that is dull? His songs are so bright." That sums up the Bappi style. Even the pathos-laden melodies ('Nanha Sa Panchhi Re Tu..’, ‘Naina Yeh Barse..’) always have a certain spark in them. Bappi Lahiri is one composer who had the basic credentials but chose to go commercial in most of the assignments (400 films in approximately 28 years) that he took up. He sidelined old favourites like Gauhar Kanpuri, Farukh Kaiser and Shaily Shailendra once he hit big time, but today he is reduced to working with small or unknown names like Sunil Jha.

Known as the Disco King at his peak, the poor man is generally considered the master plagiarist even though as he says, "Everyone has plagiarized right from the veterans. But I have done it from famous sources, there is no pretence'. The composer is always bedecked with jewellery, which includes pendants of religious or astrological value. His worst critics concede that he was always a trendsetter and that he has his own identifiable compositional and orchestral style, which Bappi says is only possible when you have a strong musical base. Considered a poor clone of R.D.Burman, he denies it and says that S.D.Burman and Madan Mohan are his inspirations. His favourite singers have always been Kishore Kumar and the Mangeshkar sisters and he has always sung a lot.

Bappi Lahiri is the son of veteran classical singer Bansari and musician and singer Aparesh Lahiri. A child prodigy, he began to play the tabla from the age of three and developed his liking for rhythm. He learnt classical music from his parents and made his debut as a music director at the age of 14 with Daadu, a Bengali film released in 1972. His relatives from his mother's side include singer Kishore Kumar and the S. Mukerji clan. Shomu Mukherji, S. Mukherji' son, gave him his Hindi break in Naha Shikari (1973). In the same year, he composed the background score for the songless B. R. Ishara film Charitra. Followed Bazar Band Karo, a B. R. Ishara non-starter in 1974. In 1975, Bappi Lahiri got his first brush with fame as the music director of the Tahir Husain multi-star hit Zakhmee, in which he sang his first song, ‘Nothing Is Impossible..’ with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar. In the same year, his songs from Chalte Chalte, whose audio was released almost simultaneously, became a rage, especially the title song, ‘Kabhi Alwida Na Kehna..‘ sung by Kishore Kumar, ‘Jaana Kahaan Hai..’ sung by Bappi himself with Sulakshana Pandit and ‘Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi..’ by Lata Mangeshkar and Shailendra Singh.

For the rest of the '70s, Bappi had a spell of bad luck, His big films (Khoon Ki Pukar, Lahu Ke Do Rang, Paapi) did not have hit music and his small films did, like Aap Ki Khatir , Toote Khilone, Dilsey Miley Dil, College Girl, Surakshaa and Ehsaas. In the '80s, Bappi's fortunes took a turn for the better, albeit with the help of straight lifts like ‘Hari Om Hari..’ (Pyaara Dushmun). ‘Mere Jaisi Haseena Ka Dil..’ (Armaan) and disco numbers like ‘Rambha Ho..’ (Armaan), ‘Disco Station..' (Hathkadi) and ‘I Am A Disco Dancer..’ and ‘Koi Yahan Naache Naache..’ (Disco Dancer). But his real breakthrough into the big league came with Prakash Mehra's Amitabh Bachchan 1982 super-hit Namak Halaal and the first of the dozen Padmalaya waist-wrenchers from Chennai, Himmatwala (1983). Aided by the corny lyrics from Anjaan and Indeewar, Jeetendra's gyrations with Southern belles and Mithun Chakraborty's pelvic jerks, Bappi became a double trendsetter (disco and the Southern 'vulgar' music) and annihilated all the older composers, except for Laxmikant - Pyarelal. "After the first lot of such films, I was branded as a composer of fast music", says Bappi. "My mother did not like it, but I had to convince her. After all, I am like a shopkeeper who has to sell what the people want from his shop". To be fair, Bappi also tried the Indian and even classical stuff in scores like Aitbaar, Sheeshay Ka Ghar, Salma and occasional songs in Pyaas and even Bomb Blast in the '90s, but it was no go.

Among the singers he has introduced or given major break to are Sharon Prabhakar, S.Janaki of the South, Alisha Chinai, Hema Sardesai, Vijay Benedict, his own daughter Rema and Kavita Paudwal. He also has believed in doing albums - both Hindi and Western along with his films long before the current trend of composers cutting private albums. His Superuna with Runa Laila was a super-seller in 1983, and his hit single ‘Habiba’ made him the first Asian to enter the Billboard Ratings and earn compliments from major music journals abroad in the '80s too. He has also composed the background score for the English film made by B.Subhash, Divine Lovers. He has also been a producer and his latest film, Love Story Deewano Ki (earlier titled Love Story' 98) is still to find buyers.

He is currently relying on small films (like the Mithun Chakraborty films made in the South) as he has been totally sidelined by the A-list of filmmakers, including old loyalists like Pehlaj Nihalani, B. Subhash and Padmalaya.

Ditto!
4
Meri jaisi haseena [Film: Armaan] <TC>

Looking for the Hindi song!
7
Tujse milna milkar chalna [Film: Amaanat] <TC>

From Mory Kante's tama tama!
Ditto! Who doesn't know this?

12
Saawnli saloni [Hum sab chor hain] <TC>

Bappida at it again, as usual!
13
Jee le le [Tarzan] <TC>
Lifted from the Osibisa number Kelele kelele!
Listen to Jeelele | Kelele
Bah!
14
Palkon ke tale [Sailaab (1990)] <TC>
Lifted from the song, 'The heat is on' from the OST of Beverly Hills Cop (1984)!
Listen to Palkon ke tale | The heat is on
I found a Kenny Loggins version of the same song too, not sure if Kenny's was the cover version.
Trivia: Guess who is credited with the story for Sailaab? I continue to be surprised everytime I see his name in the credits...it is actually credited to the noted Tamil writer/ poet Kannadasan! The story was first made in Tamil with Karthik and Ambika as 'Kan Simittum neram', if I remember right!
15
Jimmy Jimmy Aaja Aaja [Disco Dancer (1982)] <TC>
Lifted from the song 'T'es OK, T'es Bath' (1980) by the Canadian disco band named 'Ottawan'.
Listen to Jimmy Jimmy | T'es OK
Ditto!
Trivia notes on Ottawan: Ottawan is one of the most successful Canadian disco bands. Ottawan is better known for their smash hit "D.I.S.C.O" in 1979. In the 90's, it was re-recorded by N-Trance.
16
Dil tha akela [Suraksha (1979)] <TC>
Lifted from ABBA's 1974 track, 'Hasta Manana' from the album Waterloo.
Listen to Dil tha akela | Hasta Manana
Heavily borrowed!
17
Mere paas aaoge [Tarzan (1985)] <TC>
Inspired by the 1971 hit 'Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep' by Mac & Katie Kissoon.
Listen to Mere paas aaoge | Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep
Notice how Bappi has modelled the original to fit into a Hindi song idiom - the 'mere paas aaoge' almost does not have a direct influence, with the beginning of the original which goes, 'where's your mama gone'. But the similarities creep up on the 'last night I heard my momma' part which is 'mujhko tumhare jaisa yaar chaahiye' in the hindi version. Looks like Bappi has worked hard here!

The Golden Man!

I am not sure but it may be possible that Mr.Bappi Lahiri may be remembered for his golden adornments more than his music, but for sure he gave some very good numbers. He has done very few films, still managed to give huge hits.

He is again in news these days for judging Li’L Champs on ZEE TV.For a while, I used to think he gave music for DISCO DANCER only and sang some numbers himself, but I discovered later on,he gave music for other films as well including Amitabh starrer NAMAK HALAL.Like Himesh,I don’t like songs which are sung by him,but his music in some songs is very good and unique and that makes them all time hits.

1. Gori hain kalayian,tu lade mujhe hari hari chudiyan... from AAJ KA ARJUN.This song was picturised on  Jaya Prada and Amitabh Bachchan in which he tries desperately to escape from her!

2. Kisi nazar ko tera intezar aaj bhi hai... from AITBAAR.Picturised on Dimple Kapadia and Suresh Oberoi with Raj Babbar spying on her. What a bad character he was...I somehow forgot to include him in Ten Best Villains List!

3. Chalte chalte mere yeh geet yaad rakhna...kabhi alvida na kehna... from CHALTE CHALTE.Sung by Kishore Kumar, extremely good song, may have inspired Karan Johar to name his recent movie.

4. Pyar maanga hai tumhi se...na inkar karo... from COLLEGE GIRL.Again sung by Kishore Kumar.Very nice use of wind chimes in this song...

5. Yeh naina yeh kajal...khoobsurat si tum ho ghazal... from DIL SE MILE DIL. Kishore Kumar sang some very good songs for him, lucky for him, very absorbing song...

6. I am a disco dancer.... from DISCO DANCER.Who can forget this song, blockbuster movie of Mithun Chakravarthy, for sure film’s music was a major factor for its hit.

7. Goron ki na kalo ki...yeh duniya hai dilwalon ki.... from DISCO DANCER.Wow! what a song...must be played in US!Even the brown colored are not spared there! I wish the lyricist should have included ’ na bhuron Ki"(brown)into this song!Other songs of this movie were also good like
yaad aa raha hai tera pyar...

8. Sochna kya jo bhi hoga dekha jayega... from GHAYAL.This movie was really good starring Sunny Deol.Very happy go lucky song!

9. Pag ghungru baand meera nachi thi...aur hum naache bin ghungru ke... from NAMAKHALAL.This is a all time favorite and its so funny ,really funny when Amitabh Bachchan tries to ’retrieve’ his shoe from water and the song at that time goes as "pani sa na pani...":) Other songs of this movie were also good.

10. Manzilein apni jagah hain..raaste apni jagah... from SHARABI.I like this song very much, good lyrics and great music...

I think Bappi Lahiri made some very good music and was understated...

Bappi hits the Jack-pot

Bappi Lahiri to swing with the Jackson 5, '80s style!

Subhash K Jha

Bappi’s disco drive
Bappi Lahiri, the original bling buster, will now be swinging with the Jackson 5. He's set to record a track with Jackson 5. "We've finalised the deal. They've signed the contract and they'll be coming down to Mumbai in July. I was with Randy and Jermaine Jackson this month. In LA, I released a meditation album with poetry by Rajshri Chowdhary. It was released by Michael Jackson's brothers. Now I'm so happy they'll be singing with me."

The song will feature in a movie score. "It will be in the style patented by the Jackson 5 in the 1980s. You know, Jermaine was with Shilpa Shetty in Big Brother. All the Jackson brothers love India and Indian Music"
