Best songs of 2008

Like an assorted bunch of exotic fragrances, 2008 witnessed a terrific blend of variety in Bollywood soundtracks.

And though melody reigned supreme, stylised genres like rock, rap and hip-hop, earned their share of glory as well.

A whole lot of chartbusters, yes. But guess what? A few classics too.

Here's who made it to our list of Top Ten Hindi Film songs of this year:

____________
"I am a dreamer,I collect all the smiles from My yesterday,
Neatly pack them into words and hide them in my heart,
I call them "MEMORIES" Music has no boundary.

A scene from Kismat Konnection

10 Bakhuda tumhi ho, Kismat Konnection

Shahid Kapur and Vidya Balan painted the streets of Toronto a shade of blush with their vibrant chemistry in Aziz Mirza's affable, if not awe-inspiring, romance, Kismat Konnection.

And this caramel gooiness is reflected in Atif Aslam's smooth 'n' smitten rendition of Sayeed Quadri's lovesick poetry against Pritam's silvery tune, which cleverly maintain a low key, allowing Atif's terrific vocals to do all the talking.

A scene from Tashan, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

9 Tashan mein, Tashan and Haule Haule, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Despite the stars and scale, Tashan's quirky flamboyance didn't go down well the audience. Fair enough. That aside, you cannot deny its title track, composed by Vishal-Shekhar, a proud spot on this list. The gritty ardour with which Vishal Dadlani and Saleem bring the house down in this thrilling fusion of rustic and ruthless is just the kind of stuff adrenalin pumps on.

As the title suggests, this one, like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi's central protagonist Surinder Sahni, doesn't belong in the instant attraction category. Salim-Sulaiman's emotionally rich, harmonium-friendly Haule haule takes some time to grow on the listener but once you pick the bait, there's no way Sukhwinder Singh's fervent chanting is going to let go of you.

A scene from Ghajini

8 Guzarish, Ghajini

A life-size figure of Aamir Khan finds a spot in the mall. Multiplex staff gets a free Ghajini makeover. Ever since A R Murugadoss began work on the Hindi remake of his Tamil blockbuster of the same name, it's made more headlines than Brad Pitt. Perhaps Aamir's one-film-a-year stance has got something to do with this constant scrutiny.

One listen is all it takes to understand why all the fuss. A R Rahman's breathtaking score against Prasoon Joshi's lively penmanship conjures fascinating imagery. Especially when Javed Ali guides us through a soulful state of love-me-do in the understated, rhythmic patterns of Guzarish.

A scene from Singh is Kinng

7 Singh is Kinng, Singh is Kinng

What happens when 'Poonjabi', in Snoop Dogg's words, comes in contact with heavy-duty rap & hip-hop? For one, Akshay Kumar finds his coronation anthem and us, listeners, get a snazzy chartbuster to groove on.

That's precisely what happened with Pritam's Singh is Kinng, a terrific ensemble of musical contrasts (Dogg, RDB and Akki) with one simple goal -- entertainment. So wide was the reach of this popular number that several channels used it, along with the equally wicked fellow track Bas ek kinng, as background music after Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh won the confidence vote in Lok Sabha.

A scene from Bachna Ae Haseeno

6 Bachna Ae haseeno, Bachna Ae Haseeno

There's something immortal about R D Burman's creations, Kishore Kumar's voice and Rishi Kapoor's youth. And though remixes have never been high on a list of any purist, this ingenious combination of old with new gets a loud whistle and spontaneous thumbs up.

The upgraded and upbeat version by Vishal-Shekhar, featuring Kishoreda's son, Sumit (behind the scenes) and Ranbir Kapoor (Dad Rishi starred in the original) is a befitting tribute to the vivacious troika.

There's no bachna from three minutes and 33 seconds of foot-tapping bliss.

A scene from Race

5 Pehli nazar mein, Race

There's a good reason why singer Debojit Saha would often break into an impromptu rendition of the dripping-in-romance ditty, Pehli nazar mein in reality show, Bigg Boss 2.

Atif Aslam struck the chord in all the right places with this Valentine's Day favourite of 2008. Sweet and soulful, Pehli nazar (scored by Pritam again) took the radio and countdown charts by storm. And if you thought its overkill would reduce the impact, remember Pehla nasha?

A scene from Yuvvraaj

4 Tu muskura, Yuvvraaj

Subhash Ghai's lavish tale of three brothers bit box office dust but that is hardly Rahman's problem.

The ace composer strikes gold once again for the out-of-touch showman with a bouquet of magnificent music.

The soundtrack brims with enchanting compositions like Tu hi meri dost, Zindagi, Dil ka rishta and Shano shano. But the sublime loveliness of Tu muskura, thanks to Gulzar's stirring imagery and Alka Yagnik's gorgeous delivery compels us to place it above others.

A scene from Rock On!!

3 Sinbad the Sailor, Rock On!!

It doesn't matter if the inspiration comes from Sinbad or Rumpelstiltskin, you know you don't have to rely on any other judgement when a song turns on the gooseflesh and sets that head on a banging spree.

And this rocking track by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (the trio made up for a quiet 2008 with this smashing first-of-its-kind album) from this year's easily best film does just that. It's energetic. It's driven. Cut the crap, it's mind-blowing.

Taking a break from sweet-sounding lyricism, Javed Akhtar goes for the kill manifesting in the roaring fortitude and ready-to-take-on-the-world optimism of Sinbad, which wraps up with Raman Mahadevan's heartfelt Tum ho toh. And though Farhan Akhtar is no singer, his guitar-slung verve makes us believe you don't need to have Chris Martin's vocal skills to be a rock star. And so Rock On, mate!

A scene from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

2 Kabhi kabhi Aditi, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

My gift is my song and this one's for you? Look who has done Elton John proud! Our very own Abbas Tyrewala. The Aditis of the world owe the writer-turned-director a big one for this glorious gift of a song. Bring on a super-endearing picturisation of the same on bouncy younglings -- Imran Khan and Genelia D'Souza.

Without any question, A R Rahman's young, animated cheer-up ditty, sung spiritedly by Rashid Ali, is full of beans and spunky beat.

In fact, the entire soundtrack is more than happy to rest on the strength of Rahman's feel-good concoctions and left-footed Pappus.

A scene from Jodhaa Akbar

1 Khwaja mere khawja, Jodhaa Akbar

Royalty rules. So does Rahman. The maestro impresses again and again with inspiring consistency. And 2008 is simply glorious.

While the effervescence, eccentricity and elegance of Ghajini, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Yuvvraaj leaves listeners floored and fans beaming with pride, Rahman's piece de resistance of the year is decidedly the soundtrack of Jodhaa Akbar.

Through five compositions and two theme pieces, he creates grandeur, romance, history and emotions even more exciting than Ashutosh Gowarikar's lengthy labour of love.

The power of Rahman's boundless imagination, brilliant detailing and exhilarating rendition coupled with Kashif's touching reverence comes alive in trance-transporting divinity of Khwaja mere khwaja. Flawless.

The toppers of the Bollywood music biz in 2008

From an astounding 75 'A' grader bollywood releases in 2008, barely a clutchful made the mark, music wise. Not surprisingly, films composed by Rahman, SEL and Pritam - those with catchy tunes made brisk business. The messiah of the masses, Himesh Reshammiya, hit a chord with Karzzz too, relying mostly on the popularity of the original tracks and some ingenuity on his own part. Those who experimented (Sneha Khanwalkar with Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye) were not blessed with quick album sales and downloads, however.

Here's the lowdown on the top 10 film albums of 2008 and the five composers who stood the test of popularity.

TOP 10 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (T-Series , composer A R Rahman)

Rock On (Big Music, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy)

Kismat Konnection ( Tips, Pritam )

Singh Is Kinng (Junglee Music, Pritam)

Dostana (Sony BMG, Vishal-Shekhar)

Jodhaa Akbar (UTV Music, A R Rahman)

Yuvvraaj (T-Series, A R Rahman)

Ghajini (T-Series, A R Rahman)

Karzzzz (T-Series, Himesh Reshammiya)

Race (Sony BMG, Pritam)

The top composers of 2008

A R Rahman

A R Rahman remains the top grosser with films like Jodhaa Akbar, ADA: A Way of Life, Sakkarakatti (Tamil), Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Yuvvraaj, Ghajini and Slumdog Millionaire (English / Hindi) under his belt. The music for ADA: A Way of Life was done by Rahman in 2002; however, the film was delayed and got released in 2008. Each album had tracks which remained etched in the listeners' mind, but the budgeted Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na remained the top money spinner as far as listener ship and song downloads go.

Rahman who was voted the NDTV Indian of the year in 2008, started 2009 on a high note - a Golden Globe triumph and promise of more at the Academy awards.

Pritam

Quite surprisingly, composer Pritam Charaborthy battled neck-to-neck with Rahman in album sales with his commercially appeasing sound tracks. His top grosser for 2008 was the multi-crore Singh Is Kinng, Golmaal Returns, Kismat Konnection and Jannat. The Saif Ali Khan- Katrina Kaif starrer 'Race' was marred by plagiarism accusations by Taiwanese singer Lee-Hom Wang. Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which owned the rights for Lee-Hom Wang's songs, sued Tips Films for $320,000. There were many similarities in Lee-Hom Wang's song Deep in the Bamboo Grove (Chu Lin Shen Chu) and Zara Zara touch me from Race. Neverthless, this hardly affected the album's popularity.

Pritam's film scores ...

that bombed this year were Haal-e-dil and My Name is Anthony Gonsalves, but the composer who turned high profile this year by agreeing to judge a reality talent hunt on television, is sure to have his kitty full of promises for 2009.

Vishal- Shekhar

This year, duo Vishal-Shekhar scored for Bhoothnath, Tashan, Bachna Ae Haseeno, Dostana and also debuted in Tollywood with Telugu movie Chintakayala Ravi. The score for children's film Bhoothnath was moderately accepted while the multi-starring Tashan that failed at the box-office was considered as one of the weakest films to come out of the Yash Raj banner ever. However, towards the year end, Bachna Ae Haseeno and Dostana proved to be one of the biggest sellers in 2008, with the duo now having understood the pulse of the urban Indian audience. Will the Yash Raj regulars widen their horizons in 2009?

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

The trio had just two releases in 2008 – Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic and Rock On. Yash Raj's Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic got mixed reviews. But, with Farhan Akhtar's debut Rock On, SEL broke the age-old mental block that bollywood deemed about rock music. The music caught on like wild fire. Apparently, Big Music label which has the rights for the album has sold about 800,000 albums and is still counting. Their next, again with lucky mascot Farhan Akhtar, Luck by CHance, hits theatres soon, and with the music of the film already creating waves, SEL seem set for a rocking 2009 too.

Himesh Reshammiya

Himesh Reshammiya's only release for the year was 'Karzzzz', in line with his vow not to compose for films that do not feature him in the lead. The much hyped film of the year boasted of 19 tracks (original + remixes). The film got mired in controversy after Punjabi singer Kulwinder Kally accused Reshammiya for using his song Soniye Je Tere without giving him due credit. The film was moderately received by the audience and listeners alike. Now, the pulse is on his forthcoming film Kajraare scheduled to be released in 2009. The film will be directed by Pooja Bhatt.
