Bollywood's best lovers

To celebrate love in the movies, we bring you the Hindi movie industry's 10 most celebrated romantic pairings.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis

Raj Kapoor first saw Nargis when he rang her doorbell. He was there to meet her mother to enquire about the facilities offered by Famous Studios. Nargis, who was busy frying Pakoras, opened the door to the blue-eyed wonder.

On seeing him, she pushed her hair behind with besan (chickpea flour) stained fingers, smearing her face and giving Raj Kapoor a classic celluloid moment.

From Aag (1948) to Andaaz (1949), Barsaat (1949), Awaara (1951), Shree 420 (1955), Chori Chori (1955) to Jagte Raho (1956), they sizzled onscreen.

Knowing Raj Kapoor's obsession with white, Nargis became his lady in white.

Their scene in Shree 420 -- under an umbrella and swaying to the soft and soulful Pyaar hua, ikraar hua -- is love in the movies at its best.

The last film they did together was Jagte Raho. It is ironical that in the movie Nargis is the lady who finally quenches Kapoor's thirst but the scene left Indian audiences thirsting forever for more of the Raj Kapoor-Nargis romance. They were never to set the silver screen afire together again.

Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman

If love Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand showed how love can be magical, Guru Dutt showed how love can be biter too.

Dutt's obsession with his discovery, Waheeda Rehman, gave Indian cinema a glimpse of the nihilistic power of love. When it came to love, Guru Dutt chose sacrifice rather than satiation.

In Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960), he was even willing to forsake his wife (Rehman), when he learnt that his best friend was besotted by her.

Dutt's classics Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) and Pyaasa (1957) show the angst and turmoil of a sensitive soul caged in a cruel society which stops true love from blooming.

The Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rehman romance will always be remembered for its brooding intensity.

Dilip Kumar and Madhubala

Another evergreen Bollywood pair.

Their first movie together was Tarana (1951) and the two got along off screen as well. Next came Sangdil (1952) and Amar (1954).

But their most remembered movie together was Mughal-E-Azam (1960). A royal Dilip Kumar and Madhubala's classic beauty brought to life the doomed love story of the courtesan and a prince.

Off screen too, theirs was a doomed love story.

Love and hurt are two sides of the same coin; no one depicted that better than this romantic couple.

Dharmendra and Hema Malini

A charismatic macho man and the dream girl of a country -- the recipe for movie magic!

Dharmendra and Hema Malini's hugely successful pairing gave producers a string of hit films like Naya Zamana (1971), Raja Jani (1972), Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Jugnu (1973) and Dost (1974). The icing on the cake was Sholay (1975).

Dharmendra's comic scenes with Hema -- feeling her up on the pretext of teaching her how to fire a gun or speaking to her as the 'voice of god' or, of course, his 'soo-cide' threat -- were among the many highlights of the Ramesh Sippy classic.

Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz

With her tightly draped, navel-baring saris, she was the original oomph girl. With his trademark onscreen mannerisms, he was the original superstar.

Together, they gave moviegoers gems like Do Raaste (1969), Bandhan (1969) and Sachcha Jhutha (1970).

And boy, did they evoke mass hysteria!

Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh

They were the teenage heartthrobs of the 1970s.

When Neetu and Rishi danced to Ek main aur ek tu in the campus caper Khel Khel Mein (1975), they held the audience spellbound. And they made movie magic with Rafoo Chakkar (1975), Kabhi Kabhie (1976) and Amar Akbar Anthony (1977).

And the darlings of the masses became a hit pair off screen too.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha

Most -- if not all -- Hindi movie lovers feel the Amitabh-Rekha chemistry remains unmatched.

Two of the most enigmatic Bollywood stars ever, their onscreen chemistry sizzled in hits like Do Anjaane (1976), Khoon Pasina (1977), Ganga Ki Saughand (1978), Muqaddar Ka Sikandar (1978), Suhaag (1979), Mr Natwarlal (1979).

And, of course, Silsila (1981).

Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit

One of the most successful combinations to hit Hindi movies, Anil Kapoor and Maduri Dixit entrenched themselves as a screen pair with Tezaab (1988).

Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol

The badshah of Bollywood and an absolute natural. Need we say more?

Right from their very first film together, Baazigar (1993), Kajol and Shah Rukh made it clear that a new pair had arrived.

They underscored that with Karan Arjun (1995), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001).

And of course, they also gave us a certain 1995 movie called Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge!

Bollywood's best lovers

Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan

She -- Rani -- is your girl next door and he -- Abhishek -- is the heir to megastardom. She has emerged as Bollywood's reigning queen and he seems poised to outgrow his dad's formidable shadow.

Abhishek proved his mettle with Yuva, which also gave us a glimpse of the onscreen chemistry between him and Rani. Many saw shades of Jaya and Amitabh in them.

And the success of Bunty Aur Babli has firmly entrenched them as a romantic pair in the audience's minds.

Bollywood's 10 Most Iconic Love Stories

Last updated on: September 22, 2011

Modern-day Bollywood seems intent on giving up the romantic drama, choosing more often the more marketable rom-com.

Pankaj Kapur's directorial debut Mausam, however, looks like an old-school romance, making us list the 10 Hindi film romances that left the biggest cultural and cinematic impact, over the years.

Here they are, in alphabetical order:

Aradhana

Shakti Samanta's 1969 classic, a gut-wrenchingly emotional remake of To Each His Own, gave us Rajesh Khanna at his very best. An air force officer, he dies in a plane crash leaving behind a pregnant widow.

She lets a wealthy couple adopt the boy she gives birth to, but remains the child's nanny and watches helplessly as he grows into the spitting image of his father. A deeply dramatic and well-crafted film, this one's hard not to fall for.

Not just does this Raj Kapoor romance boast of his legendary pairing with Nargis, but also of a completely different romantic subplot between Prem Nath and Nimmi.

Kapoor and Nargis face numerous trials and tribulations on their way to romantic union, and so spirited are the performances from the leads, and so palpable the chemistry, that the film grips you right from the start.

There's more romance in Barsaat's posters alone than in most Bollywood screenplays.

Young romance never had a representative quite like Bobby. Rich kid Raj, played by Rishi Kapoor, falls for a poor teenager, played by dazzling young debutante Dimple Kapadia.

Their fathers Pran and Prem Nath predictably object to the relationship and all hell breaks loose, but the kids themselves are absolutely stunning in the parts, injecting freshness and verve into Hindi cinema itself with this delightful little film made by Rishi's dad.

There have been many screen interpretations of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's classic novel, but none had the cinematic impact of Bimal Roy's 1955 take on the tale, starring Dilip Kumar as the drunken antihero alongside Suchitra Sen's Paro and Vyajayanthimala's Chandramukhi.

The film defined big-screen romance in the 1950s and the film continued to influence our love stories decades after it was made.

Aditya Chopra's directorial debut is the stuff of absolute legend: Shah Rukh Khan, a beer-pinching commitment-phobic womanist falls in love with a girl he meets on a train.

This girl Kajol will soon be married to a man she doesn't know. He shows up and decides, against all Bollywood tradition, that he will not run away with her.

A forward-thinking film that, along with Hum Aapke Hain... Koun?, defanged mainstream movies by removing the villain character.
