‘Working with Sallu helped
Composers Sajid-Wajid talk about music and more to Riya V Anandwala

Did you have any problems collaborating with Himesh Reshammiya and Anand Raj Anand on the Welcome score? Sajid: Initially, we were only working on the background score. But after watching the rushes, we thought we could contribute more. So, we got cracking on the promotional tracks. There was no clash of ideas. Earlier, two of our songs had been incorporated in Tere Naam as well. Wajid: The film didn't have a title track at the outset. We proposed Welcome. I'm glad the song has been well utilised. Do you prefer working on such multicomposer projects or would you rather go solo? Wajid: We don't usually like working with other composers but at times, it just happens. Partner was quite a surprise packet. Sajid: We knew that the music of Partner would work but we didn't expect it to be such a rage. The response to Soni de nakhre was unbelievable. And the credit goes to Salman Khan. Wajid: We've stopped expecting miracles. Whenever we have pinned our hopes high, we have come crashing down.

Has your bonding with Salman Khan helped you professionally? Sajid: There are only two people I love, Salman Khan and Wajid. Working with Salman has definitely helped us. Wajid: We are what we are today because of Salman Khan. We wouldn't have survived in the industry without him. Does he contribute to your music? Sajid: Yes, always. Do you plan to sing for other composers? Sajid: We need to get offers first.

Wajid: I'm ready to experiment. Recently, Pritam offered me a track. You've really had to wait for success to come your way. Sajid: Patience pays. Wajid: I agree. It's been a lot of hard work and a long wait. There were times when friends and family would enquire about how things were going. It was embarrassing. What kept the big banners away? Sajid: May be they couldn't afford us. But we are doing big ticket films now. Wajid: There was a time when colleagues would urge us to move to a different profession. They are still around...so are we. That's life. Ever thought of parting ways? Wajid: We are brothers. There can never be ego clashes between us. Yes, we do take each other for granted at times, but it's fun. Sajid: One of us takes a decision and the other accepts it. My dad used to say, "Niyat saaf toh manzil aasan." You'd promised V of India contestant Toshi Sabri a break in one of your projects. Sajid: Two days after the episode, we recorded with him for a big film.

No awards or no nominations for your Partner score. Disappointed? Sajid: IIFA and Zee have nominated us. Wajid: People party and dance to our songs even today That's . an award. What drew you to Dus ka Dum? Sajid: The show required a song which brings out Salman Khan's energy Salman bhai . suggested our name. Why is most of your work associated with Salman Khan? Sajid: He's family Yes, we did . get the work because of him. But we are also working for other actors. Can you ever say no to Salman? Wajid: Never.

Don't you feel after a point, long associations don't help much? Wajid: Not in our case. Sajid, are you turning to acting? Sajid: It's on. I'm playing Salman's friend in a Boney Kapoor production, directed by Prabhu Deva. When do you intend to do a private album? Sajid: It'll take a while. We have no plans right now. Wajid: We've done something with Sony, though. It'll be released soon. What about your children... will they also get into movie music? Sajid: It's too early to predict. But my daughter Arshi is musically inclined. Wajid: My kids don't know about my musical career, thanks to no award trophies at home (laughs). But I'm training them. Why is it difficult for newcomers to survive? Sajid: Too many wannabes want to make it big too soon. There isn't room for so many .

Wajid: Even established singers and composers find it difficult to sustain their careers. So, newcomers have to struggle. Do you think it's right for composers to charge Rs 1 crore a film? Sajid: It all depends on the song and the way the movie is being shot. Wajid: Just one crore? I'd double the price. Today, songs fare better than the movies. Have you ever worked for someone as a favour without money? Sajid: We can't talk about that. These things keep happening. Wajid: Maintaining relationships is important. So we do ‘adjust' at times.
