Music listeners craving for something different should look no further than the music score of 1920. The latest Bhatt movie promises a lot of things but as with any of his movies, the music is one of the focal points; can he produce a period based OST (the movie as you can probably guess is set in the year '1920') without lacking mainstream appeal that is accustomed with all Bhatt movies? The director himself answers this:

“How does one walk the tight rope between contemporary and classical? We thought of getting the ageless and timeless voices on amazing contemporary tracks to create that magical fusion…”

But who would create this music and who would sing the songs? Over the years Adnan Sami has slowly developed into an impressive music composer and teams up with Bhatt in a rare partnership. As for the singers, no expense or imagination has been spared to capture the best on offer. Kailash Kher and Asha Bhonsle don’t need any introduction whatsoever but Shubha Mudgal, Parveen Sultana and a rare debut appearance (in bollywood) from classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj, completes the singing party. The concept of these singers performing against a background of contemporary but traditional sounds should wet the appetite of all music fans…

And what a start we have with the opener, Vaada Tumse Hai Vaada (male), which is undoubtedly the piece de resistance! The combination of classical guitar riffs, dhol play and percussion are all weaved together magically to create a fine composition that will instantly connect with you, a trademark of past Bhatt productions. The magical fusion is complete with the vocals of one of the best ever classical singers in India. How Sami persuaded Pandit Jasraj to sing the song at the age of 78 is remarkable but the singer defies his age and makes a telling contribution….his vocals are exquisite against the backdrop of some fine poetry by Sameer. Put simply a great track worthy of repeated listening…

The track is reinvented for Vaada Tumse Hai Vaada (female) and whilst not on par with the original, still deserves attention. The guitar strings make a return but this time Adnan Sami tries to infuse a more modern orchestration so out goes the dhol play and in its place we have some funky percussion arrangements. Now put classical singer Parveen Sultana into the pot and you have a neat alternative. Highly Recommended!

Bichua is the 'item number' featuring Rakhi Sawant but is comfortably the weakest track on offer. There is nothing fresh in the dhol arrangements here and the singing by Shubha Mugdal for once, doesn’t create that magical fusion that it intends to- it sounds a little average…the lyrics by Sameer could have been better too. Bichua Remix is peppy but again nothing to write home about so let’s move on.

Thankfully the soundtrack gets back on track with the beautifully composed Aise Jalta Hai Jiya. The percussion (mixed with with other traditional instruments) works wonders in terms of creating a lifting melody but it’s the tabla play that is the true USP of the composition. Asha Bhonsle sounds in her elements here and her vocals bounce off the tabla beats under the witchcraft of Adnan Sami…exemplifying the supernatural theme of the movie. Sameer continues his excellent contribution with the lyrics. Another winner for the OST and the movie!

A haunting piano piece commences Tujhe Main Pyar Karu, the penultimate track of 1920. What follows is another modern piece wrapped in traditional melody and the effect is satisfying. The piano plays intermittently in the background whilst the percussion is joined by a bow stringed instrument. Kailash Kher performs admirably as usual and is able to lift the song a notch or two with his heartfelt rendition. The lyrics are impressive yet again. Another recommended track although one feels the music could have been fresher.

The 1920 Theme track further showcases the composer’s talents with a fantastic little piano orchestration that is eventually dominated by some deft guitar strings. This is a fitting end to the OST.

Rahman aside, the year of music that is 2008 (thus far), will not be remembered fondly by music lovers apart from those composers that tried something different. Just as Monty and SEL presented us with a unique flavour in the recent Chamku and Rock On! respectively, Adnan Sami goes the extra mile for 1920 and delivers one of his most impressive soundtracks to date. It is one thing to have an idea or concept but another to deliver it and to Adnan’s credit, he is generally excellent in his execution. One must also credit Sameer who (along with his contribution to Chamku) has produced some of his best poetry in years.

To refer to 1920 OST as a ‘classic score’ as per the director’s comments is a little far fetched but his comments that it is a ‘milestone for others to follow’ maybe apt to some extent…in other words venturing into the realms of innovation and experimentation bears fruit!

My personal thoughts and opinion on 1920

Singers: Pandit Jasraj, Asha Bhosle, Kailash Kher, Parveen Sultana and Shubha Mudgal...!!
Composer Adnan Sami, along with lyricist Sameer, both did excellent job and does exactly to create a sensation for listener like me that what I thought was brilliant. This CD have seven such tracks and most of them have powerful singers to back it.

The first song in the album starts with classical singer Pandit Jasraj's song titled "Vaada tumse hai vaada". The splendid rendition by the maestro stands out in this track more than anything else. While Adnan also demonstrates great talent in mixing Indian music with Western did a great job, it is Panditji's performances that articulate its popularity.

Shubha Mudgal sings next. Titled "Bichua", it is an item number and has a huge rustic feel to it. But Mudgal, who created waves with "Ab ke Saawan", sounds raw in this piece. In addition, Sameer's lyrics are quite lacking in spirit.

"Aise jalta hai jiya" Asha Ji her voice was brilliant. She is heard rarely these days, to renders solo piece and makes it sound like a fairly easy job. Though her rendition is melodious to the core, this particular track did disappointed me a lot doesn't have much of a life.

"Tujhe main pyar karu" He started initially sound like a wonderful piece but was very disappoints once it progresses. Kailash Kher, is known for his splendid renditions, fails to create the same magic in the song. Even the composer doesn’t deliver as well. This track is way below average piece.

The best track of the album has been kept for the last. "1920 - Theme" is a beautiful amalgamation of the piano with the violin creating an exciting and mysterious mood. Composer proves his talent with this instrumental piece.

The music of "1920" caters to the periodic fusion era of the movie most of the songs have that eternal appeal. I do not know how this songs would do on the big screen, their popularity has to grow as individual pieces.

Adnan Sami

Renowned singer cum composer Adnan Sami has been hospitalized. Sources close to Adnan said that his hospitalization was due to a bad case of food poisoning which he suffered a couple of days back. That also explains the reason why Adnan was missing from the grand music launch of Vikram Bhatt's film 1920, for which he has composed the music.

Vikram Bhatt admitted that Adnan could not attend the music launch because of the food poisoning.
Adnan's fans need not fret as the sources close to the singer said that he was doing fine now but was really upset of not being able to attend the music function.

That's ok Adnan, as long as you recover fast and get back to what you are best at: Music! Here's wishing you a speedy recovery for Adnan!

Making 1920 scary!
Special effects have become an integral part of movies these days. From Hrithik Roshan flying around in Krrish to Rani Mukerji riding on rainbows in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, the cool effects make the actors look good.

Vikram Bhatt's horror film, 1920, boasts of quite a bit of special effects too. The men behind the cool VFX effects -- Ashoke Chowdhury and Indraneil Roy tell Nithya Ramani how they made 1920 look scary.

How did you bag 1920?

We approached Vikram Bhatt and showed him some of our works. We had earlier done Rohan Sippy's Fear and there were a lot of graphics and special effects in it. That's how we got 1920.

He gave us a simple brief. He wanted something that wasn't done before. And we wanted to deliver good, international quality work.

'With CG, we can play with colours or change the look of the film'

How did you give it an international touch?

The film was captured on reel and then treated digitally. We used software called BARCO. With this software, we can play with colours or change the look of the film. This is also called CG (Computer Graphics) where you can create something that cannot be created in reality -- make glasses break or generate smoke out of nowhere.

Vikram was very specific about the CG effects he wanted. This is all visualisation.

This is how Chroma is done. Chroma means using a green or blue screen in the background and shooting. Then, we remove the screen and add whatever background we want. It can be a still background with only the characters moving or it can be a footage with the characters moving.

Scanning old footages is called Rotoscopy. Old footages are archived by the concerned authorities. You need to get permission to use those footages, but one can do wonders with it. For example, in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, the museum scene is treated on Rotoscopy. The scene where Rani and the children walk with Mahatma Gandhi is a classic example. We took an old footage of Gandhiji walking with many people. We replaced some of the people with Rani and the kids. Similarly, creating the heavenly, smoky atmosphere, and Rani riding a bicycle on the rainbow is the magic of CG.

'The best cheaters are the best graphic designers'
How do you go about making graphics?

Firstly, we hear the script. We get to know the director's requirements.

Then we make the story board, which means we break every single scene into a number of shots. If a scene requires a ghostly face coming out of a curtain, the story board will have this one scene broken down into 10 to 15 shots, and every movement of the character will change from frame to frame.

A lot of brainstorming and teamwork goes into this. Designers discuss on how a scene should look. In case of 1920, we discuss how we can make the scene scarier, and realistic. Viewers know it is graphics, but even then, you should be smart enough to make them feel that this may be for real. The best cheaters are the best graphic designers.

'There is a scene where a person stands in front of a mirror and sees himself walking'
What was the most difficult scene in 1920?

The most difficult CG was creating Mumbai's Victoria Terminus station like it looked in 1920. If we were to shoot VT station now, it would not be possible to make it resemble how it looked in 1920. So we created the whole set up on CG. It took us nearly 40 days to complete it.

There is another scene where a window pane breaks and the glass pieces pierce a priest's body with great force. This obviously could not have been done for real.

There is another scene when the priest puts holy water on the floor and smoke comes out of it. We tried to do this for real with acid but it did not come out well. So we recreated that scene in CG.

What is most unbelievable scene you have created?

There is a scene where a person stands in front of a mirror and sees himself walking. This is humanly not possible, as you can only see your reflection in the mirror.

'Wire rigs should not pass through the person's body or face'
How do you make actors fly in the air with no support?

It's done with the use of wire rigs. People are tied with thick strong ropes and manipulated, as required. These ropes are deleted through CG. This practice is done in almost all films, that's why it's easy.

Each frame needs to be carefully checked; even the slightest disturbance will be clearly noticed by the viewers. We have to make sure that the rope should not pass through the person's body or face. If it does, the person's body or face will also get deleted during the editing process.

There are scenes in 1920 where Adah is being pulled by forces and she is lifted to the ceiling. All this is done with the help of wire rigs.

How much manpower is needed to do such graphics?

There is no specific number of people. We are a team of 30 and everyone put in sleepless nights to make what you will see on screen. It took us nearly four months to complete the graphics.

What next?

After 1920, we have done Sanjay Gadhvi's Kidnap. Now, we are working on Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra's Dilli 6.
