My Name Is Khan´ : No Seperate International Cut!

There has been a lot of talk about Karan Johar's Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer, 'My Name Is Khan' having two seperate cuts, one for the Indian audience and another for the international market. But Karan refutes the same.
 

Says Karan , "I don’t think so. What the diaspora cut is should be the film’s final cut, I hope, but I don’t know actually. See, I told (Fox Searchlight Studios) them clearly that I know the Indian domestic business and diaspora. They know beyond it so if they feel the need to cut it, they can go ahead and do it. I will not come in their way because they know their business like I know mine."

I don't need publicity to promote my movie'

Shah Rukh Khan on Tuesday clarified that his detention at Newark International Airport in the US was not a drama.
 
Addressing mediapersons in Mumbai after his return, Khan, 43, said, "I was asked bizarre questions by the airport officials. It wasn't a drama. I don't want publicity. But I feel routine procedure was not followed there. We should not be treated on the basis of our colour or nationality."
 

Recalling the incident, he said he was not angry over what had happened there. However, he felt that the airport officials ''went a little overboard' with the questioning.
 

Denying that he felt bad about the questioning, he said what really hurt him was the question they popped at him several times, "Your name is very common. Can anyone vouch for you to enter here?"
 

Rubbishing reports that he was trying to promote his upcoming movie My Name Is Khan, he said, "I hate people who rake up religious issues for their personal gains. I don't want to sound pompous here but I don't need publicity to promote my movie. I am too big a star for that."
 

The actor also said the incident would not prevent him from visiting the US again. He said that if a 'tit for tat' policy was to be followed, then he would love to be allowed to frisk Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie or Megan Fox.
 

"I will go to the US when work demands but I will limit my travels," he said. "I have no complaints against the system but I wish it could be more streamlined and less cumbersome."
 

Khan was detained for about two hours at the airport where he had arrived to attend a South Asian related event in Atlantic City. He was detained after his name flashed on a computer and was asked several questions about the purpose of his visit.
 

Khan was released after Congress MP Rajiv Shukla spoke to the authorities in the US and the Indian consulate.
 
The actor returned home to a warm welcome from cheering fans. There was complete chaos at the international airport where Khan's fans had gathered to welcome him back after his three-day-trip.

10 Reasons why SRK's detention wasn't a disaster

Too much heat has been generated and too much dust has been raised by the 60 minute detention of Shah Rukh Khan by the US airport authorities. The Page 3 crowd has been vociferous in condemning the 'evil empire' and the whole episode is being portrayed as it an assault to India's dignity by some over-zealous US officers. SRK doesn't represent the collective honour of 1 billion people. (Nor does Dhoni  or Rahul Gandhi  for that matter!)

 

I have 10 lines of arguments to prove that SRK's detention is a complete non-issue:

 

1. A 60-minute interrogation must have been caused by some suspicious aberration on the computer screen of the clearing officer. It is one thing by the fans of the superstar to say that their icon was insulted but come to think of the mental state of the guy who dared to stop him. He felt suspicious about a passenger whose superstardom in India was none of his concerns. In the matters of security, one must err on the side of caution. Better to search a celebrity rather than letting a suspect go out and cause the mayhem.

 

2. If a former Defence Minister of India can be searched and a most revered ex-President of India can be frisked, then surely SRK can be detained too. Is a film star to be attached more importance than the former President of our republic?

 

3. Does anyone recall a movie titled, Sarfarosh. The story revolved around a famous singer from Pakistan who was much loved in India and was a toast to the millions of Indian fans but he eventually turned out to be a terrorist. Now we all know that that was a movie but sometimes the reel life can resemble the real life. If a Hansie Crownie, the much respected South African cricketer can be a match-fixing enabler then anyone can be anything. At least theoretically! Nobody should be exempt from detailed scrutiny if the initial checks point out that more detailed checks are required. After all who could have imagined that the lovable Munna Bhai once kept an AK 47 in his house!

 

4. Okay fine, SRK was detained and interrogated and he came out clean, so why should the matter not end there itself. Is it because there is a certain film My Name Is Khan that is yet to be released and all the current publicity will help the film which may have a similar theme. Sorry guys, just thinking aloud. No insinuations meant!

 

5. The recent Hindi movie, New York, portrays the fundamentalists in a rather 'none too bad light.' It tries to create sympathy for the terrorists by saying that all those who are terrorists are terrorists a result of bashing received at the hands of FBI. And the movie is a big hit, I hear. Anyone by the name Khan from India then becomes a suspect for the US state. I am really surprised that the movie didn't get the condemnation that it deserved. What else do you want the US authorities to do?

 

6. All the bigwigs of Bollywood are up in arms against the US. They say that US suffers from fear psychosis. That is correct my dear Bollywood biggies. Any country which suffers a man-made calamity like the 9/11 will have fear psychosis. Anything less than would make them more vulnerable and the US is determined to let its people feel safe once again.

 

7. SRK says that he doesn't feel like going to the US again. Well he can't avoid it. The US represents more than 1/4th of the huge overseas market for Bollywood movies. In fact, he shouldn't have made this remark. And why don't you want to go to US? Just because you were detained for 60 minutes. I think SRK made these utterances so that he escapes such detailed scrutiny the next time. Indian film stars find it demeaning to be standing in queues along with the ordinary folks. They would rather strut out majestically letting others gasp at their swagger!

 

8. SRK felt insulted by being detailed for a routine interrogation. This is most unbelievable. For a man who routinely insults fellow celebrities when he anchors some award ceremony, this was a like him getting a taste of his own medicine.

 

9. Spare a thought for some of the producers and directors in whose sets, SRK reaches late. They are virtually detained in their own sets by the star's tantrums. Good revenge for them.

 

10. And finally it's time these film stars started to think of themselves as mortals. From dust we all came and to dust we all shall go. There aren't any superstars really. We are all children of One God. My 13 year daughter says, "Dilip Kumar who?" when I tell her that Dillipsaab was the greatest actors of all time. In 20 years time, my grandchildren will say, "SRK who?"

 

 

So Mr Khan, just chill man.

The aggravated detention of India's greatest superstar is proof that America under Obama has not yet turned a page on the paranoia of Bush's war on terror, writes Aijaz Zaka Syed*
 
 

Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains, lamented French philosopher Jean- Jacques Rousseau. Inspired by Rousseau and other French philosophers, America's founding fathers made liberty, equality and justice the cornerstones of their new constitution.

 

Thomas Jefferson, the first secretary of state who went on to lead the country as its third president and is largely responsible for the incredibly powerful and immensely inspiring US Declaration of Independence, borrowed from Rousseau to argue: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness."

 

Watching the circus of Shah Rukh Khan's reception in the US unfold this week, I couldn't help wonder how America's founding fathers would have reacted to a guest being treated how he was -- and someone with the popularity and following India's biggest superstar enjoys worldwide. Celebrated as the global brand ambassador of his country, the Bollywood big gun was rated last year as the planet's biggest superstar by Time magazine, ahead of Will Smith and Tom Cruise.

 

In a delicious quirk of irony, the actor only recently finished shooting for his much-awaited movie, My Name is Khan, set in the US. The movie, being distributed worldwide by Rupert Murdoch's 20th Century Fox and Star, is supposed to chronicle the journey of self-discovery of an Indian Muslim in the US who gets caught in the madness of the 11 September attacks and their aftermath.

 

This is no defence of Shah Rukh or a protest at his treatment at Newark's rather absurdly named Liberty International Airport, although I can't deny my weakness for his onscreen shenanigans. What really fascinates me is how -- even as our world shrinks to become smaller and more networked thanks to technology -- we come up with more inventive ways of dividing and separating each from the other. Instead of using our amazing scientific progress to build more bridges between people, we are building more and more walls.

 

What the superstar had to go through at Newark airport -- detained and grilled like a common thug for nearly three hours without being allowed to make a phone call to his hosts because of his suspicious last name -- is shocking. But it happens all the time with thousands of Arabs, Muslims and even non-Muslim Asians. Only it doesn't get reported or is often taken in stride by helpless travellers who have to go about their lives.

 

The Newark episode has outraged a billion strong nation, and many around the world, because it involves a popular icon like Shah Rukh Khan, who frequently visits the US and other nations in Western hemisphere. But what about the tens of millions of others who routinely and silently suffer this harassment at airports, railway stations and other entry points to the public domain on a daily basis? Who cares about them? No one, apparently.

 

According to a recent report of the Asian Law Caucus, Muslim Americans are being increasingly targeted for unwarranted house searches and interrogation, especially after trips abroad.

 

Soon after 9/11, eminent Indian Canadian writer Rohinton Mistry called off his tour when he was stopped at almost every single airport in the US. His unusual last name and beard apparently triggered alarm bells in a jittery America. (Even poor Sikhs, sitting ducks with their beards and turbans, came under attack in the wake of 9/11).

 

But Shah Rukh Khan is no Rohinton Mistry -- an engaging writer but otherwise lost in the obscurity of a North American winter. His is easily the most popular and recognised face of India and an epitome of the country's religious and cultural diversity. He has ruled the world's biggest movie industry for nearly two decades and launched a million brands. No wonder he has a billion people around the world rooting for him, including senior ministers of the Indian government.

 

What about the thousands of others whose last names happen to be Khan, Sheikh or Mohamed? Who intervenes and speaks on their behalf?

 

Some of them might just disappear. Like Maher Arar did who was sent to be tortured in Syria as a "terror suspect" after he was picked up at JFK Airport in transit following a family holiday in Tunisia in 2002. A false tipoff here, a case of mistaken identity there. Thousands of lives like that of Maher Arar wrecked.

 

How did Jefferson and Lincoln's America end up here? And it is affecting the whole world. No one trusts anyone anymore. Osama bin Laden has got the West, and the whole of civilised world, where he wanted it: without peace and afraid, very afraid, and paranoid of its own shadow, just as he promised.

 

It's not just fear of flying. We are afraid of everything now. We are afraid of each other. A 100 ml bottle of liquid is a weapon of mass destruction, we are told. This is what the terrorists wanted: our civil liberties suspended, our rights undermined and just about everyone going bonkers.

 

Eight years of America's terror war and the end is still nowhere in sight. More than a million innocent lives have been lost in Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention America's own nearly 5,000 brave men and women, and hundreds of others from its allies. For what? No one knows what this war is about anymore and why the world is fighting it. Not even the Americans seem to have the faintest idea.

 

In his historic inaugural address, President Barack Hussein Obama promised a "new way forward", especially with Muslims. It is time to show America has moved on, Mr President!

Shahrukh denies US race row a publicity stunt

MUMBAI: Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan on Tuesday denied that a row over US immigration officials allegedly singling him out because of his Muslim name was a publicity stunt.

 

 

Returning to India, the 43-year-old actor dismissed suggestions that the controversy, which triggered outrage among his millions of loyal fans, was created to promote his next film, ‘My Name Is Khan’.

 


The movie deals with the experiences of Muslims in the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks and tackles the contentious issue of racial profiling.

 


‘It's not a publicity stunt. It's not about my upcoming movie. I know that the media has made it an issue,’ Khan told a news conference in Mumbai.

 


Khan, star of ‘Om Shanti Om’ and the classic ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' (The Brave Heart Will Get The Bride), said at the weekend that he was detained for two hours at Newark Liberty International Airport near New York.

 


The actor claimed that he had been held and questioned due to his name.

 


But US officials said he was kept waiting for just over an hour until his luggage, which had gone missing, was located.

 


Washington's ambassador to New Delhi tried to placate Indian fury, insisting Khan was a welcome visitor to the US.

 


The dispute centred on the thorny issue of racial profiling and sparked condemnation from Indian politicians, some of whom called for tit-for-tat frisking of visiting US dignitaries.

 


Indian newspapers claimed the US authorities were discriminating against one of the country's biggest stars.

 


Speaking in Hindi and English, Khan told reporters on Tuesday that he had ‘no problem with what happened’ and was not asking for special treatment but he hoped that the incident would not be repeated.

 


‘Next time when Angelina Jolie is here, give me the chance to frisk her,’ he joked.

Earlier, Shah Rukh said, “The US has developed religious paranoia over the years. My guard was also denied a visa because he has the same last name as mine.”


The Bollywood star was detained for over two hours at the Newark airport, New Jersey. He was released after Indian embassy officials vouched for him. He was in the US to attend IndependenceDay celebrations. Currently filming for My Name is Khan, he underwent "humiliating" questioning even as he told authorities he was an Indian celebrity. His bodyguards were also grilled.


Several Bollywood celebs are in the US for I-Day celebrations, including Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan.

Five reasons why we can't wait for My Name Is Khan

The air of excitement was palpable at the press conference to unveil the first promo of Karan Johar's film My Name Is Khan, on Wednesday in Mumbai.

 

The main attraction, of course, being the two stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who will be seen together on screen after almost a decade in 2001's Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. Which makes it the number one reason why we can't wait to watch the movie. 

 

Plus, Shah Rukh boasts that the film will have "three times more chemistry than Raj and Simran did in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge."

 

As for Kajol, who plays Mandira, a Hindu single mother in San Francisco, she says working with Shah Rukh has spoilt her. "Shah Rukh is like a bad habit," she grins.

The second reason is supplied by the leading man himself, who says that My Name Is Khan "is a different film altogether. It is one of the nicest love stories I have acted in."

 

That's saying quite a lot since SRK is known to have acted in some of the biggest romantic hits.

Though New York and Kurbaan dealt with terrorism too, My Name Is Khan, which is set against the backdrop of America's 9/11 terror attacks, promises to be different.

 

For one, Shah Rukh plays a man suffering from the Asperger syndrome, a form of autism and whose disability at the Los Angeles International Airport has far-reaching consequences.

Karan Johar has given us good films Kuch Kuch Hota HaiKabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna as a director, and produced a number of feel good films like Wake Up Sid and Dostana.

 

So directing his two favourite people will probably result in magic. As Shah Rukh puts it, "My Name Is Khan has the Karan Joharishness in it which I love. We have evolved as actors and people through this film. Generally, when three of us work together, we don't have to say much to each other. We have that kind of understanding, though this time we did discuss on how we could improvise more."

Shah Rukh is not called the Badshah of Bollywood for nothing.

 

Any film of his makes news, whether you like it or not.

 

Plus, he has a dual role -- that of a producer in My Name Is Khan. So will he succeed? We'll just have to wait until the Valentine's Day weekend in February 12 to find out.
