tête-à-tête - ‘It’s usually the guys who win’
Sourabhee Debbarma, winner, Indian Idol, Season 4 Nikhil Taneja
Mumbai

WHEN SOURABHEE Debbarma saw her picture on the gigantic screen that was to declare the results of Indian Idol’s Season 4, she wasn’t sure whether the photo was of the winner or of the eliminated contestant.

“I was so confused,” the 22-year-old winner of Indian Idol said. “I looked at my parents, but they were as blank as I was. Even they thought I had been eliminated.” The confusion soon turned to joy as the Agartala resident was declared the first woman winner of the show, pipping Dehradun’s Kapil Thapa. Sourabhee confessed that she wasn’t expecting it. “I had told Kapil that I’d be really happy if he wins… because I was sure I wouldn’t,” she laughed. “I’m still surprised I won... it’s usually the guys who win.” Sourabhee made “many sacrifices” to change the male-biased voting. The toughest part was convincing her parents to let her pursue singing with her cul tural group, Chong Preng.

She recalled: “My parents would lock me in a room when I’d ask them for permission to perform. My sister would open the door secretly and I’d jump over the walls of our house to sing with my group. It was such fun!” Sourabhee’s passion eventually won over her parents and her father Sunil registered her for Indian Idol. Soon, she became the darling of the North-East. “I used to think people in Agartala wouldn’t have time for the show,” she giggled. “But I heard that yesterday that they celebrated like India had won a cricket match!” She feels a sense of responsibility towards the region and plans to “do as much as possible” for her culture.

Sourabhee, who was linked to Thapa, plans to “still be together” with him. She admitted it would be difficult because Thapa, who is in the army will join his , unit soon.

“We’ll go with the flow... but if we get shows together, why not?” she said.

Sourabhee Debbarma
Age: 23
Hometown: Agartala

Sourabhee has her eye on the prize and is working hard to achieve it.

"I am concentrating on the rehearsals," she says. "I want to give my best and dance well because I love dancing."

Did she expect to be among the top three? "I was surprised when I was selected because all the trained singers were rejected," she answers. "Once I started performing, I got confidence and that helped me to reach the top 10. After that, I wanted to be in the top three. Now I am nervous because I want to win the title."

That may not be very tough because, as Sourabhee admits, she's the judges' favourite. They even nicknamed her the Indian Shakira. "They like my performances and I'm consistent. But the results are based on votes so they can be unpredictable," she says.

Her most memorable moment was the time when Sonam Kapoor gifted her a costume from Delhi 6 when the actress came on the show. Another favourite moment was when Sonali Bendre learnt dance steps from Sourabhee.

But her favourite judge isn't Bendre; it is Anu Malik. "He would scold me for a bad performance and that's why I would work hard and better my next performance," she explains.

Sourabhee's popularity can be seen when she visited her hometown. "People from all communities lined the streets to get a glimpse of me," she says. "I don't think any politician would have got such a welcome [smiles]."

But she's realistic, and knows that she faces stiff competition from the other finalists. "I knew Kapil would be in the finals. Torsha has a unique voice, so she is a tough competitor too," she says.

Whether she wins or not, Sourabhee has enjoyed the experience. "I always underestimated myself so I worked hard. After I started getting compliments and reached the top 10, I felt I should work harder to reach the top three. Now I have become greedy. I want to win the title."

Sourabhee is very thrilled that her parents, sister and the King of Tripura will be there to support her on D-Day. "If I don't win, it will be an insult in front of the king," she says.
