Talent show singer is online hit

A 47-year-old church volunteer from West Lothian has become an unlikely overnight singing sensation with millions watching her perform online.

Susan Boyle, from Blackburn, stunned judges on ITV's Britain's Got Talent with her performance of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables on Saturday.

Since then Hollywood actress Demi Moore has joined the legions of fans who have voiced their support on the internet.

Ms Boyle has now become the bookies' favourite to win the talent show.

Ms Boyle, who told viewers she had "never been kissed", said she had always wanted to be a singer.

She said: "I entered the competition because I wanted to have a chance at my singing.

"I found it very nerve-wracking to begin with but once I settled down and began to sing, I thought that the audience accepted me a bit more. Then I sort of relaxed and began to enjoy it.

Ms Boyle, who is currently unemployed, is a keen church-goer and community worker who is well-known for her Karaoke performances.

She said: "It all began for me at age 12, when I used to sing in choirs and school concerts. Then after that when I got older I was singing in clubs."

Hollywood fans

Her performance on Saturday has received more than 5m hits on You Tube.

Among those who have clicked to watch are Ghost star Demi Moore and her husband Ashton Kutcher.

He sent her a message on the micro-blogging service Twitter saying: "This just made my night."

Her entry read: "You saw it made me teary!"

After Ms Boyle's audition performance at Glasgow's Clyde Auditorium she is now tipped to beat 75,000 other applicants to the Britain's Got Talent prize, a chance to perform at the Royal Variety Performance.

Tom Kerr, West Lothian's Provost, said: "We would like to add our best wishes for the next stage of the competition.

"Susan has clearly wowed the audience, the judges and the world with a truly fantastic performance.

"Now tributes from across the globe are flooding in, including from Hollywood star Demi Moore.

"And with millions of hits on You Tube, Susan has put Blackburn, West Lothian, firmly on the map."

Susan is pole-axed with joy!
12 Apr 09

Susan Boyle

"It went down a bomb," says delighted Susan...

When Susan Boyle bounded onto the Glasgow stage there weren’t many in the three thousand-strong audience that gave her a chance of being any good.

When she informed the crowd that she wanted to be a singer like Elaine Paige the judges raised their collective eyebrows and the audience burst into uproar and laughter.

First impressions, as Amanda Holden later pointed out, can be wholly misleading, and when Susan finished her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream she looked into the audience to discover nobody was laughing at her anymore.

“When I opened my mouth and began to sing I won over my doubters. Being on that stage and being on the other end of that reception was absolutely fantastic. It went down a bomb".

Giggling and bashful, she remembered her standing ovation, saying: "As soon as everyone stood up I was thinking, there must be fivers underneath that seat. There must have been money somewhere – especially for the judges to do it. Piers Morgan as well"!

"I was pole-axed with joy when I came off.”

And recalling what the judges told her, Susan smiled again. "“The judges’ comments were wonderful; they made me feel like I can actually achieve something."

"Piers Morgan said he’d like to see a lot more of Susan Boyle. Amanda, she wasn’t very sure to begin with, but she changed her mind. She said all 'I can say is just 'wow''. Simon just laughed. He’s a good guy, him".

In fact, there are rumours that Simon and Susan have since chatted about the possibility of a much dreamed-of record deal.

Susan grinned, "The goal is to get out there, make a record, and hopefully make other people happy.”

But the ultimate wish for Susan is to be accepted by people as a performer.

“If that happens,” she smiles with a twinkle in her eye, “I’ll be one happy lady!”

Susan's Easter story
13 Apr 09

Susan Boyle

It’s been quite a weekend for BGT sensation Susan Boyle.

The 47 year-old singer, who delighted everyone with her powerful performance of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Mis on Saturday’s show, hasn’t let stardom go to her head.

Instead she turned up for church as usual on Easter Sunday morning, reportedly receiving rapturous applause from her friends in the congregation.

She said, “It was incredible. Although we sing in church not a lot of them know how good I was, so it was a bit of a shock for them”.

“Everyone is very nice and it’s lovely when all the kids stop me in the street to congratulate me.”

Many of the churchgoers know Susan well – but for different reasons. Currently unemployed, the singer devotes a lot of time doing community work on the church’s behalf.

She told us, “I like to help out where I can and I mostly do voluntary work. I help out the elderly, stuff like that. And I visit people in hospital. I’ve been doing that for a year and a half now”.

It’s been a tough time for Susan, who now lives alone in her childhood home following the death of her 91 year-old mother, Bridget, in 2007.

But Susan’s positive attitude - as well as her desire to keep busy - has kept her spirits up.

She told us, “A lot of things can happen that have been really sad and you’ve got to cover it up. You either laugh or you’d greet (cry). And we’d all be greeting, that would be a terrible mess”.

“Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone. I don’t intend to be alone for long”.

Judging by the many messages of support on this website, Susan has millions of new friends and fans out there, for starters. And the people of West Lothian are certainly behind her all the way!

She smiled, “The whole village is cheering me on. West Lothian would wish me well, I hope, that is the kind of community it is”.

“And I will be doing my best. Before I left, they told me, 'If you can behave yourself and stop your carry on, you will do well. You can sing okay'”.

“Who am I to let them down?”

Can Susan inspire others to show off their talents? Let us know below!

How Susan Boyle won over the world

By Ian Youngs
Entertainment reporter, BBC News

Susan Boyle and Larry King
Susan Boyle has appeared on Larry King's CNN show

Last weekend, Susan Boyle was just a face in the crowd.

This weekend, clips of her singing on Britain's Got Talent have notched up almost 50 million views on YouTube.

Her face appears on the front pages of papers in Britain and beyond, she been offered a seat on Oprah's sofa and has been told she is as good as guaranteed a worldwide number one album.

The rise of the 47-year-old spinster from Scotland has been a true global phenomenon.

Last Saturday, viewers saw Boyle, with double chin, unkempt hair, frumpy appearance and eccentric demeanour, step onto the talent show stage and proclaim her dream of being a professional singer.

The judges rolled their eyes and the audience pulled incredulous faces. Onlookers, on set and at home, were rubbing their hands at the prospect of another hopeless, deluded loser being crushed by a withering Simon Cowell insult.

Then she opened her mouth and sang I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables.

Her voice confounded all expectations - the judges' eyes bulged, the crowd went wild and Boyle became an instant star.

Ever since, the "fairytale" has travelled the globe and interest in the church volunteer has snowballed.

It is the story of a talent unearthed, but that does not fully explain why she has become such a sensation.

Boyle has shattered prejudices about the connection between age, appearance and talent. She has proved that you don't have to be young and glamorous to be talented, and recognised as such.

The YouTube millions have cheered on the underdog, and seen in her the possibilities for their own hopes and dreams.

Immediately after her performance, one of the judges, Amanda Holden, said they had been "very cynical", and that the performance was the "biggest wake-up call ever".

Another judge, former newspaper editor Piers Morgan, appeared with Boyle on CNN's Larry King Show.

"I'm sorry because we did not give you anything like the respect we should have done when you first came out," he told her. Referring to her appearance, he said: "We thought you were going to be a bit of a joke act, to be honest with you."

Boyle would have a best-selling album and a world tour by the end of the year, whether she wins Britain's Got Talent or not, he assured her.

And mentioning fellow judge Simon Cowell, Morgan added: "It's fair to say that his eyes have been going ker-ching ever since Susan's performance."

Blogs, newspaper columns and talk shows have been full of discussion about why Boyle has sparked such a reaction.

"She reordered the measure of beauty - and I had no idea until tears sprang how desperately I need that corrective "

Lisa Schwarzbaum
Entertainment Weekly

Lisa Schwarzbaum, writer for US celebrity magazine Entertainment Weekly, said the performance was a powerful reality check.

She wrote: "In our pop-minded culture so slavishly obsessed with packaging - the right face, the right clothes, the right attitudes, the right Facebook posts - the unpackaged artistic power of the unstyled, un-hip, un-kissed Ms Boyle let me feel, for the duration of one blazing showstopping ballad, the meaning of human grace.

"She pierced my defences. She reordered the measure of beauty. And I had no idea until tears sprang how desperately I need that corrective."

Her post has been followed by comments from scores of readers saying they watched the clip repeatedly, with the same emotional response.

"I cried SO hard," read one. "There's something so beautiful about reaching your dreams... and knowing that age means nothing."

Another wrote: "I cry because she reminds us to hope, to never lose track of our dreams, to keep putting one foot in front of the other no matter what others say or think. She gives us hope."

Susan Boyle at home
Boyle's home has been besieged by media from around the world

"Fairytales don't come any more satisfactory than this," wrote columnist Melanie Reid in The Times.

"The sisterhood of the plain, those of us who will never look like Girls Aloud, nor even Girls Aloud's grandmothers, are cheering as never before.

"Susan Boyle is the ugly duckling who didn't need to turn into a swan; she has fulfilled the dreams of millions who, downtrodden by the cruelty of a culture that judges them on their appearance, have settled for life without looking in the mirror."

Miranda Sawyer, writing in the Daily Mirror, questioned why image was less of an issue for male singers.

"No woman gets to perform publicly unless she looks like Mariah Carey," she wrote. "If you're a female singer, you are required by showbiz law to appear sexy at all times.

"Poor Madonna and Kylie are desperately keeping up appearances, holding back the years with Botox and face-fillers just so they're allowed to continue with their careers."

The Sun newspaper has given away a free Susan Boyle souvenir poster. US talk show host Jay Leno performed an impression of her on his show.

Demi Moore famously joined the fan club. Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has congratulated her. She is odds-on favourite to win Britain's Got Talent.

A star has been born. Whether she will she leave a dent on our prejudices about age and appearance remains to be seen.

All Thriller, no filler for Shaheen

20 Apr 09

Shaheen Jafargholi

Young Shaheen Jafargholi, the Who’s Loving You singer who gave Amanda goose bumps on Saturday’s Britain’s Got Talent, is shaping up to be a major contender on the show.

And no wonder Shaheen excelled at his Michael Jackson track – he’s sung that song plenty of times on stage before…

He told us, “I just recently came off tour with a show called Thriller Live!, which has all the hits of Michael Jackson in it. I was the young Michael Jackson in his life story, so I did hits like ABC, I Want You Back, and Who’s Loving You”.

And with the Jackson family dynasty acting as the creative driving force for the stage show, he already has the approval of the music world's most famous clan.

“I knew Who’s Loving You suited my voice, so I thought it would be a good choice to sing for Simon and Co.”.

Shaheen, who attends regular school in the Mount Pleasant area of Swansea but goes to the city’s Mark Jermin stage school on the weekend, also knows a thing or two about auditions.

The dimpled singer, who has even bagged small parts in Torchwood, Holby City and a crisps ad, told us, “For Thriller Live!, I auditioned with loads and loads of people. It took four auditions in the end – and then I got a phone call saying I’d got it. I’ve been on tour four times now”.

But make no mistake – Shaheen is certain that Britain’s Got Talent is the biggest show he’s ever done.

He explained, “I’ve had a lot of good things happen to me this last few months. I’m really grateful. The whole thing was out of this world”.

“I have had a great experience and I am ready for my next step”.

“Now, I would love to have my name in lights, and to have people know it”.

“Hopefully, this will be my big break!“

Susan Boyle became a worldwide sensation after appearing on TV

Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle has inspired cartoon slacker Homer Simpson to audition for a talent show in The Simpsons.

Ms Boyle, 48, from West Lothian, became a worldwide sensation after appearing on Britain's Got Talent last month.

In the online clip, Homer appears before judge Simon Cowell, saying "My name is Homer Simpson, I'm 39 years old and, well, I've never been kissed."

He adds: "My dream is to be a great singer like Susan Boyle."

Ms Boyle's rendition of I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables on the ITV1 show turned her into a global phenomenon after being posted on YouTube.

She was previously mentioned in cult US cartoon show South Park.

Singer Boyle reaches Talent semis

Scottish singer Susan Boyle has made it through to the live semi-finals of ITV's Britain's Got Talent, where she will battle it out with 39 other acts.

The 48-year-old from West Lothian became a worldwide sensation after her audition performance of I Dreamed A Dream was screened last month.

The 40 semi-finalists will perform in five nightly ITV1 shows from tonight.

Other acts through include an 11-year-old street dancer, a dancing dog and a group of performing farmers.

The 40 acts were announced during the latest edition of Britain's Got Talent on Saturday night.

'It's fantastic'

In each of the semi-finals, two acts will be picked by the public and the judges to make it through to the grand final next Saturday.

They are all competing for the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Show and win a £100,000 cheque.

As she was put through to the next stage, Boyle jumped for joy and said: "I am on top of the world. It's fantastic!"

Her first appearance on the television talent show received more than 58 million hits on the internet site, YouTube.

That earned her a number of famous fans, including rock musician Jon Bon Jovi and Demi Moore, and she was also interviewed on American television shows Oprah and Larry King since she came to worldwide attention.

But she is not the only performer on the show to have caught the judges and public's attention.

Wheelbarrow

Ten-year-old Lancashire schoolgirl Hollie Steel also made it into the semi-finals with her performance of I Could Have Danced All Night during which she both sang and ballet-danced.

And 12-year-old Shaheen Jafargholi from Swansea is tipped to rival Boyle after his performance of Who's Lovin' You prompted Demi Moore to praise him on her Twitter feed.

The performance of another young semi-finalist, 11-year-old street dancer Aidan Davis, has been compared to last year's winner George Sampson making him another top contender for the final.

Among the more unusual acts in the semis are three farming friends, Sam Parris, 27, Bobby Barns, 18, and Lyle Burrough, 19, all from Exeter, known as The Barrow Boys.

The three farmers described their act as "everything you shouldn't do with a wheelbarrow".

Dancers beat Boyle in talent show

Diversity

Highlights of the finale (courtesy of ITV / Talkback Thames)

Street dance group Diversity has been crowned the winner of this year's Britain's Got Talent TV show in a shock victory over favourite Susan Boyle.

The 11-strong group, aged 12 to 25, from Essex fell to the floor and cried in surprise when told of the win.

Member Ashley Banjo, 20, said winning the contest had "changed our lives".

The group defied bookmakers' predictions to win the £100,000 prize and the chance to perform at the Royal Variety Show in December.

'Utter perfection'

Diversity is made up of three sets of brothers and four friends and was only formed in 2007.

Still shocked about the victory, choreographer Banjo said: "When you said our name, honestly I'm going to wake up in a minute."

He also thanked everyone who had voted for the group.

Susan Boyle
Susan Boyle had been the favourite to win the talent show

After the performance, which included a cheeky reference to the judges' buzzers, judge Simon Cowell said: "If I had to give marks on that, that is the only performance tonight I would want to give a 10 to.

"There was not a step out of place, it was sheer and utter perfection."

Fellow judge Amanda Holden said Banjo's choreography was "second to none" and that Diversity had blown rival dance troupe Flawless "out of the water".

Throughout the competition the group had wowed the audience and received glowing comments from the judges, but the group was sixth favourite to win going into the final.

Album hopes

It had long been predicted that 48-year-old Boyle from West Lothian would run away with the title after gaining worldwide recognition thanks to her audition being watched by millions of people on the internet.

Gracious in defeat, she said that "the best people won" adding: "I wish you all the best."

Boyle, who sang audition song I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables again, did not appear to be too disappointed in defeat, however, as she gave a little dance on stage and hitched her dress up to show a leg.

After her performance, Cowell said: "Win or lose you had the guts to come back here and face your critics and you beat them - whatever happens you can walk away from this with your head held high."

Asked about her own plans on sister show Britain's Got More Talent, Boyle said: "I hope to get an album out - I'll just play it by ear."

Congratulations to Diversity - they are excellent. While Susan Boyle came second this will not have damaged her future career

Eleanor Selwyn, Griffith

Saxophonist Julian Smith came in third place behind the singer.

Although clearly disappointed, he said: "I'm just happy to have taken part - it's been phenomenal."

Apart from Boyle, none of the main frontrunners including street dancer Aidan Davis, 12-year-old singer Shaheen Jafargholi and comedy dance act Stavros Flatley, made it into the top three after the viewers' vote.

The other acts which took part included singers Shawn Smith, grandfather and granddaughter team 2 Grand and 10-year-old Hollie Steel.

It is thought the final may have been watched by as many as 20m people.

Diversity is the second dance act to win the talent contest after 15-year-old George Sampson won the show last year.

Shaheen's Michael Jackson tribute

Shaheen Jafargholi said he had been inspired by the King of Pop's music.

Britain's Got Talent finalist Shaheen Jafargholi paid his own tribute to Michael Jackson at the singer's memorial service in Los Angeles.

The Swansea schoolboy thanked Jackson for blessing him with his music after a standing ovation from the audience of fans, family, friends and stars.

The youngster had flown to Los Angeles at the request of Jackson's family.

He performed alongside worldwide music stars including Lionel Richie, Mariah Carey and Stevie Wonder.

Dressed in black trousers and with a yellow rose in the lapel of his black jacket he sang Who's Lovin' You, which was a hit for the Jackson Five.

Afterwards, he said: "I love Michael Jackson. I just want to thank him for blessing me and everyone on this earth with his amazing music."

Choreographer Kenny Ortega praised the youngster and revealed that Jackson had personally requested his appearance in his planned London concerts after watching Britain's Got Talent.

Jackson's family held a private function at a Los Angeles cemetery, followed a few hours later by the service.

Shaheen's head teacher at Dylan Thomas Community School in Swansea, Rob Phillips, had predicted he would take the service in his stride.

Mr Phillips said: "We are all immensely proud of Shaheen.

"We were proud when he took part in Britain's Got Talent, when he reached the final, but this has exceeded any expectations any of us could possibly have had.

"You can't get any bigger than this. Who would have thought a pupil at our school would be centre stage at the most spectacular celebrity send-off of all time?

"It's mind-blowing that someone from our community is getting this ultimate accolade and it's even better to know it was at the request of the family.

"They knew how much Michael Jackson rated him and I know Michael Jackson was one of the people Shaheen held in high esteem.

"I think he will take it in his stride. There would be something wrong if he wasn't nervous at this point, but he's handled everything that's come his way until now.

"He dealt with the finals of Britain's Got Talent comfortably. He's a level-headed young man with tremendous support from his mum who is keen to see that he stays that way."

Fahima Sultana
I think it's so cool with him being a friend Fahima Sultana

Mr Phillips said he was told about the invitation last Thursday, but had been sworn to secrecy.

"We were approached because in order for youngsters to perform anywhere during school time they have to have their teacher's permission to release them.

"They were reluctant to let us know because it's so high profile and it's been very hard keeping it secret."

The teacher said the youngster had flown to LA with his mother, Karen Thomas, and Mark Jermin from the Mark Jermin Stage School in Swansea.

"Everyone in the whole of Swansea is going to be rooting for him," Mr Phillips said.

Shaheen's friend Lauren Squibb, 12, said prior to the event: "I just hope he has the best of times tonight.

"He'll probably be feeling really nervous but actually really excited because he's actually there performing for Michael Jackson."

Classmate Fahima Sultana added: "I think it's so cool with him being a friend."
