'IS DIL SE' Sukhwinder Singh
'IS DIL SE' SINGS ALL STAGES OF LOVE
By Eye TV India Bureau
Sukhwinder Singh is the most renowned singer in Bollywood today. The voice behind "Chhaiya Chhaiya" has become the most sought-after in India's tinsel town. Recently, he was honored in the US for his title song in 'Omkara'. The Smashits interviewed the singer in New Delhi on the release of his latest album 'Is Dil Se'.
Excerpts from the interview:
How did you feel when honored in the US for 'Omkara'?
I felt really happy that apart from India, the song was appreciated overseas also. Singing for the movie was also an experience as it was the first time in my career when I sang the song on a situation. And talking about the US, I had a concert in Los Angeles and there were 38,000 audiences in the hall and they were all Americans. They enjoyed the music so much that it made me feel very happy.
Is Indian music becoming global?
Yes, definitely. Indian music is going global and the credit goes to A R Rehman for taking Indian music to international heights.
Which has been the most memorable moment in your career?
The most memorable moment of my life was when I met A R Rehman.
How has your experience been from 'Dil Se' to 'Is Dil Se'?
The experience has been wonderful. I am really happy and satisfied. And yes naming this album as 'Is Dil Se' was purely a coincidence. However, there is nothing like that we wanted to cash on something from 'Dil Se' to 'Is Dil Se'.
Tell us something about the album 'Is Dil Se'.
This is my best romantic album till date. This album comprises all phases of love, be it confession stage, or romantic stage or anger...This album is a mix bag of expressions of love. There are eight songs in this album meant for all situations and I am sure everybody will enjoy the songs.
How is this album different from your last album?
My last album 'Nasha Hi Nasha' was based on Trans music whereas this album is completely filmy style. This has all romantic, naughty songs.
Which is your favorite song in this album?
I like all the songs. Title song as well as another song 'Tauba Tauba' are my favorites. I have really enjoyed singing for this album. It's very close to my heart.
Aren't you fond of Sufi music?
Yes, Sufi music is very close to my heart. Since childhood I have been visiting mosques and have been listening to Sufi hymns. Sufi music is very close to my heart… it's God music…comes straight from the heart.
What appeals you more -- album songs or film songs?
Irrespective of an album or a film song, I enjoy everyone of them. For me song is more important than its category -- a film song or an album song. If you sing from your heart, you give your best and if you take singing as a challenge or competition, it doesn't come out from your heart and hence you are not here to stay for long.

'IS DIL SE' Sukhwinder Singh
"Love and emotions can´t happen without heart." - Sukhwinder Singh
By: Shailesh Nevatia Today, one of the most in-demand singers in Bollywood Sukhwinder Singh becomes the household name ever since he sang 'Chaiyya-Chaiyya' while back in 1998. Before 'Dil Se', Sukhwinder also did playback singing for lots of movies but the success came to him with Mani Ratnam's 'Dil Se' for which A.R. Rahman scored the music. The Chaiyya-Chaiyya singer arrived in style and captured the hearts of millions of peoples and also bagged the Film Fare Award for best playback singer of 1998. That was the moment Sukhwinder was looking for and the success of 'Chaiyya-Chaiyya' paid for him and he never looked back. He got great reviews for his each and every composition by critics & audiences and his songs were becoming the superhits one after another. In the chain of success recently he was awarded with a Bollywood Music Award at New Atlantic City for the title song of 'Omkara' and now he's back in style once again in a new look and a fresh album titiled 'Is Dil Se – love never dies' which was released at a function held at capital's five star hotel Le Meridien, during the function we did get the opportunity to talk with him, here are some excerpts from our conversation with Sukhwinder Singh: You must be on cloud nine as you are getting so much love and affection from audiences and are able to give hits one after another...
www.puremail.com There is nothing like to be on cloud nine, it's the God's grace and love of peoples that I have reached this position. They liked the songs I have sung and make them hits, I'm very happy that I'm able to entertain them with songs of their likes.
Tell us something about your latest album
-My new album is 'Is Dil Se – love never dies' that is released by T-Series. It has eight songs penned by Sameer and are based on romantic stories. This album is the first ever in the history of the Indian Music Industry to have eight tracks of different mood and situations. The album has got the subject on Romantic Stories. The best part of the album is the choice of original songs handpicked and compiled by me that belongs to varied genres and this is the one specialty of this album which makes it different from regular pop albums.
Is there any specific reason behind the title 'Is Dil Se – love never dies' or want to re-create the 'Dil Se' magic once again?
Whenever I get involved in any project I always try to put 100% efforts with lots of dedication and hardwork. There is nothing like specific reason behind the title but a simple fact. The album is based on romantic stories and to generate romantic feelings one must have a heart. Without heart the feelings of love or romance can't happen because it's heart that generates these kinds of feelings or attraction for someone.
A few days back you were awarded with a Bollywood Music Award on foreign soil, tell us something about that.
Omkara's music was unique and fresh, keeping in mind the script we have to create music accordingly and I'm very happy that the results are far better than what we expected before creating the music of 'Omkara'. You all know about its extraordinary success, the 'title song', 'Beedi Jalaile' & 'Namak Ishq ka' gets overwhelming response from the audiences. Getting this award on foreign soil is a proud feeling and I'm feeling good & pleased after bagging this award.
Till now you have sung lots of superhit songs but those can't make it to achieve the success of 'Chaiyya-Chaiyya' eventhough they went on to claim the superduper hit tag. What can you say about that?
In our industry, music plays a vital role. Every year almost hundreds of films have been made for which we needs lakhs of songs but each and every song cannot become superduper hits. I think there should not be any comparision between the songs because every song has its own style and rhythm. If we go through the records in recent past we found that last year along with many others Himesh Reshammiya has composed almost 30-40 hits and they all went superhits but in between the song 'Kajrare-Kajrare' also happened and went on to make history in India and abroad as well though all the songs are superduperhits and still they are part of each and every party or any other occation. Like this, whether it's 'Chaiyya-Chaiyya', or 'Hai-Hai Mirchi', 'Omkara' or any other song it is not necessary that all the songs creates the same magic again and again.
At the time of 'Dil Se' you and A.R. Rahman have received great reviews but after that both of you didn't work together for some time. Why?
This is not true that we didn't work together after 'Dil Se'. It was Rahman's encouragement that played a bigger part in my success. There is no need to go far back recently we did work together in Oscar nominated 'Water', play written by Shekhar Kapoor and produced & directed by Andrew Loyed entitled 'Bombay Dreams' & Hollywood project 'Inside Man'.
Today music of various genres like remix, hip-hop, rock and others are present in the market but they didn't sound great like what we have heard earlier. In the past it was great and awesome whereas today's music is nothing more than noisy and harmful to one's ears. What can you say about that?
Here’s the fact: 'Old is gold' comes alive. Old music is like a wine, which tastes great as it grows older. As the time changed the choice of audience has been changed as well. Today they follow the western culture and due to that today they like lots of remix, hip-hop, rocking, jazz music and fast peppy songs. Our music is great. It is neither noisy nor it can be harmful. Like always there are various genres of music available in the market for every age group. All we need is to spend the time to search for music of our choice.
There are lots of talent shows on air and so many fresh talents are coming into the music industry, how successful are these contestants and talent shows?
Talent hunts are great concept but everthing should be done in limit because when someone crosses the limit it generates difficulties. We have lots of talents in every field whether it is for games, acting, music or anyother field we are not short of talents. But what these talents need is the suitable platform and atmosphere to showcase their skills. These talent hunt competitions are perfect examples of these very platforms. One more thing, some contestants have feeling that winning these talent hunt are enough for them to achieve the success at high levels but that's not true because when one reaches the higher level, the expections are also higher. Only those who put one hundred percent efforts, dedication and hardwork will achieves the success.
What are your future assignments and plans?
Right now I’m waiting for the responce of listeners towards my album. The music of 'Omkara, Rehguzar' and 'Apna Sapna Money Money' are doing well. There are lots of project in the pipeline in these the music of 'Kaafila' and 'Ek Dastak' will be releasing in the near future.

'IS DIL SE' Sukhwinder Singh
THIRD ENERGY
Amritsar-born singer Sukhvinder Singh, now the music composer of Black & White, says singing is the third energy of a song, poetry being first and composition second
Sourabh Gupta
There is nothing black and white about Sukhvinder Singh. It's all colour - his smile, his animated body and his Sky-high, heart wrenching voice. So is his music in Black & White, Subhash Ghai's latest film. "One should not let go of one's roots but the presentation should be international," he quips, on himself. We caught up with the man with the golden voice at Hotel Taj in Chandigarh on Friday .
Sukhvinder's eyes are blood-shot - he has been travelling too much - and he has grown a paunch. He's also shivering: "Chandigarh's so cold, after Mumbai". But he's beaming with non-stop energy He's so . energetic, he can't stop talking. The singer from Amritsar is a hotshot Bollywood music composer today, after Halla Bol and now Black & White (B&W). "The most difficult thing is to sing your own compositions.
There's no one to correct you." (He sings in eight of his 10 compositions in B&W). "Now it seems the same - composing and singing."
A reporter asks about the album and he giggles. "Have you heard someone criticising his own work? But I can say this - when Subhashji and I listened to the album, we found it soothing, divine."
The album is based on trance and raga, he says. "I've also used sounds of moving cars, kites, opening and closing of shutters. This is orchestra. Then someone is humming carelessly as he walks. It's as close to the heart as possible. I've also used the bhajan tradition in the romantic songs. You know Vishal-Shekhar and Salim-Suleiman too are happy that I've turned a composer. And I'm very busy with little work!"
"There are two kinds of experiments with music nowadays: trance and dance!" he laughs loudly "For me, it's the gelling of . divine (sic) and entertainment. Main, as a singer, natural cheez ko feel karna chahta hoon. During my stage shows, you'll see that after a few songs, I tend to close my eyes as I sing."
He is going to cut a private album in September. "Entire folk - from 10 different states - Tamil, Marathi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Rajasthani…" (In 1999, he had even lent his voice to SP Balasubramaniam when the silky-voiced singer acted in a Tamil movie.) "When I was to sing Chak De… I heard the music and said: 'I'm going home'. I told I'll return after three days and sing. 'Today, it's not happening, my humble request,' I told the composers. I came home and got DVDs of Dhyan Chand's games from a library in Bhopal. I came to know how dangerous the game was, how much courage it required. I read poems written on hockey . Then I sang the song. Hence there was a fragrance in the song, a light waft. If you hear carefully, or maybe only I feel it, there's a bit of divinity in Dard-e-Disco too."
Another reporter quips that he is very down to earth. He replies: "Ego aur jealousy se skin kharab ho jati hai (Ego damages the skin). It shows on your face."
Success hasn't changed him, he says. "If you become different, your voice too will become different." Singing on a high scale shouldn't be forceful. "I feel it's effortless."

It had to happen one day or the other. Even as B-Town was placing its bets on the songstress Sunidhi Chauhan to be the first one to go international, it comes as a surprise to know that Bollywood's very own 'Chhaiya Chhaiya' man Sukhwinder Singh, who only recently Chak De'ed many a listener's heart with his chart-bursting songs in Chak De India and Om Shanti Om amongst others.
This man is now all set to sing in a Hollywood film which is being directed by Steven Spielberg, no less! The film will star Denzel Washington. Singh has been signed by Universal Pictures for the same.
Sukhwinder says that the Hollywood filmmakers wanted to recreate the magic of 'Chhaiya Chhaiya', which had become immensely popular in Hollywood. For this film however, he will be singing a traditional folk Kutchi Song.

Sukhwinder Singh’s musical act! By MIO Team Feb 12, 2008, 05:36
From playback singing, to composing and now films, Sukhwinder Singh seems to be busy handling too many things at a time. Apparently, for ‘Black & White’ Sukhwinder Singh has not only crooned and composed melodies, but will also be seen singing and dancing to the feisty track, ‘Peer Manavan’ in the flick.
‘Peer Manavan’, a true Punjabi folk number is crooned by Shradha Pandit alongside Sukhwinder Singh. The leading ladies of the film, Shefali Shah and Aditi Sharma will be seen jigging to this mirthful situational track backed by Sukhwinder’s jig.
Sukhwinder was earlier seen jigging to another colorful track ‘Ban Than’ in Sanjay Dutt starrer ‘Kurukshetra’.

Sukhwinder Singh is a Sikh, from India, most famous as a Bollywood playback singer. His greatest success is arguably the song Chaiyya Chaiyya for Mani Ratnam's 1998 film Dil Se, composed by A. R. Rahman, for which he won the 'Best Male Playback' award at the 1999 Filmfare Awards in India (the same song was used in Spike Lee's film Inside Man). His popularity increased after he sung Chak De India-an Indian patriotic song in the Hindi film "Chak De India". Recently he also performed in the Indian Idol Grand Finale. After the release of the Indian blockbuster of all time, Om Shanti Om, in November 2007, his portfolio of successes got enriched by Dard-E-Disco. The song, famous even before its release due to the performance of Shah Rukh Khan with his six pack abs, turned out to be the unquestionable powerplay of the Diwali season in Asia.
Sukhwinder Singh is a leading Bollywood singer. He first performed on stage at the age of 7 or 8, singing the Lata number "Sa re ga ma pa, pa, pa, ga ma re, ga re mere sang mere saajna." He also released a Punjabi album called Munda Southhall Da with T. Singh joined Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s troupe and quickly became a music arranger, before heading to the south of India to look for work. At this time he did a film called Rakshagan.
Singh got his break in a Madhuri Dixit film called Khilaaf, in which he sang the hit song ‘Aa ja sanam’. But the singer himself realised that something was missing in his voice. He left his dream city to tour England and America to see, hear and understand the various forms of music. After this broadening of his musical horizons, he returned to Mumbai to kick-start his musical career.
His first effort in Hindi films, Aaja Sanam, went largely unremarked, even though the music carried the names of Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Then, along came Dil Se. A. R. Rahman, always interested in something new, used Sukhwinder for the unforgettable "Chaiyya Chaiyya". Sukhwinder is now highly regarded as a sensitive and eloquent singer. The other films that followed - including Taal, Biwi No. 1, 1947 Earth, Daag, Dillagi, Moksha, and Thakshak,"tere naam","apna sapna money money", "shadi se pehle" ,"shabd" ,"musafir", "chak de india", "om shanti om", "black & white"- have made him a household name. Sukhwinder owes a large part of his success to Rahman's encouragement, and makes no effort to gloss over that fact.
Sukhwinder has strong opinions about writing music - he once stated that if he was ever involved in writing music for film, he would delve deep into the Indian musical landscape and not simply conjure up some digital tricks with pop and fusion[citation needed]. Rahman and Sukhwinder are presently working closely together. The duo have decided to make music that is not tailor-made for films, but rather to venture into realms where they can truly express themselves

In the world of music, Sukhwinder Singh certainly has carved a niche for himself. Whether it is film or non-film songs, his rendition is always a class apart and makes them all sound special. This is the reason why one looks forward to his work when his non-film album 'Is Dil Se' arrives. With Sukhwinder himself composing the songs and Sameer writing the lyrics, one looks forward to an exposing album with variety galore.
1) Main Tujhe Dil Se
Now this is what one calls sheer pain. The way Sukhwinder Singh exudes pain through his opening lines 'Main Tujhse Dil Se...Is Dil Se...Nikaloon Kaise?" manages to create such a great impact that one takes the entire track pretty seriously and waits for the rest of it to follow. A painful number about separation from one's true love, there is a rock arrangement given to the entire number to make it sound more contemporary. Though the song does turn out to be a good hear, one feels that if the arrangements would have been kept completely Indian or there was an unplugged version of the same, it would have made for much more haunting listening. A shorter two minutes version follows in the form of 'The Passion Of Love' which sounds like a true blue club mix song.
2) Chehra Tera
What follows next is a track that turns out to be pretty ordinary and surprising too, especially since it comes from someone of the caliber of Sukhwinder Singh. The crooning of 'O O Aa Aa Aah' is just not worthy of someone like Singh and the lyrics that follow (smile tera, style tera, skirt teri, jeans teri etc. etc.) is just not what one expected from Sukhwinder Singh who has given a superb album like 'Nasha Hi Nasha Hai' half a decade back. He tries to get peppy and youthful in 'Chehra Tera' but the song is just not happening. Disappointing.
3) Sun Zara (Rock n Roll)
A rock n roll number follows next in the form of 'Sun Zara'. There is an attempt to create an old world charm in the style of 50 and 60s with a dash of jazz added to the entire enterprise. A decent track that can be enjoyed for some of its moments, it makes one start wondering by this time if one needs to look at 'Is Dil Se' from a different perspective. It's no doubt a new kind of attempt from Suhhwinder and one has to in fact stop making comparisons with all the great work he has done in the past. Nevertheless, it is a better number than 'Chehra Tera' though one still waits to hear something worthy of Singh and not something that goes like 'Me and you, fultoo fultoo fultoo' which forms the rhythm of 'Sun Zara'.
4) Mere Dil Mein
A better number comes in the form of 'Mere Dil Mein' which at least comes close to the expectations one had from the album so far. A love song where Singh can be heard in his silken voice, what still worries is the arrangements factors because the tune is quite melodious but has been unnecessarily accompanied with western instruments. If it would have been kept simple, it would have made a much better impact. Still, a good song to hear overall and equivalent to the title song in terms of entertainment value!
5) Nach Lein De
For the first time in the album comes an authentic bhangra number and as expected Sukhwinder Singh goes full steam while hitting on just the right strings here. A pump up the volume and bring on the beats number, 'Nach Lein De' is a kind of celebration number that is a must for the marriages or other family get together events. Though the song is high on arrangements with Singh's voice sounding comparatively distant, it is still quite an enjoyable number and redeems the entertainment quotient of the album once again after 'Mere Dil Mein'.

Sukhwinder sings for Slum Dog Millionaire Posted online: Friday ,
September 05, 2008
Sukhwinder Singh has recorded a song for Danny Boyle’s film Slum Dog Millionaire starring Anil Kapoor and Irrfan Khan with music by A.R.Rahman. The song is written by Gulzar. The film is based on a true story about a kid from the slums of Mumbai. Sukhwinder’s other Hollywood venture as music director and singer is Steven Spielberg’s next film. For this film Sukhwinder is recording a Kutchi song. “I chose folk because it will stand out in the crowd. I refused to take any techno music because Hollywood is way ahead in it. We need to have our own flavour and make our mark with what is ours.”

Re: 'IS DIL SE' Sukhwinder Singh
I owe my success to AR Rahman: Sukhwinder
The singer talks about his musical journey so far
By IANS . Jan 01, 2009
It's pouring offers for Sukhwinder Singh in both Bollywood and Hollywood. But instead of giving himself a pat on the back and taking all the credit, the playback singer says he owes his success to ace composer AR Rahman.
"Rahman has been a catalyst in my success because when everyone had turned me down and ridiculed my song 'Thaiyan thaiyan', he was the only one to believe in me. With few changes in lyrics, he gave me my first big success in the form of 'Chaiyyan chaiyyan'," said Sukhwinder in an interview.
Sukhwinder, who started his Bollywood stint with the 1986 film Karma, witnessed an upswing in his career with the hugely popular song Chaiyyan chaiyyan in the 1998 film Dil Se.
He later went on to sing hits like Main ramta jogi (Taal), Kambakht ishq (Pyar Tune Kya Kiya), Chak de (Chak De! India), Dil haara (Tashan), Dard-e-disco (Om Shanti Om) and the recent hit Haule haule from Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
The singer, whose voice has a rustic feel, has also gone international.
"I have sung a Kutchi folk song for a Steven Spielberg film starring Denzel Washington, because they wanted authentic Indian music," said Sukhwinder.
"Earlier too, my song 'Chaiyyan chaiyyan' was used for the film Inside Man. Recently I sang a song 'Jai ho' for Hollywood film Slumdog Millionaire, where again the music is by Rahman," he added.

Grammy for Sukhwinder Singh? 02 Feb, 2009
Renuka Vyavahare/INDIATIMES MOVIES
Be it Dard-E-Disco, Chak De India , Rut Aa gayi Re from 1947 Earth, Chaiyya Chaiyya , Ramta Jogi from Taal, Kava Kava from Monsoon Wedding , Jalwa from Fashion and Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire... This singer has been consistent in singing chartbuster numbers. Sukhvinder Singh got candid with Renuka Vyavahare about his Oscar nominated song ‘ Jai Ho ’ and his reaction to him deserving a Grammy for is vocal talent.
Rahman has won three Oscar nominations for Jai ho. Are you expecting a Grammy nomination too?
I am actually a Slumdog Millionaire. I had nothing when I started singing and few songs of mine have made me a millionaire! I am more than happy for Rahman and his three nominations at the Oscars. The fact that Jai Ho has been such a huge hit internationally itself is my Grammy award.
So all geared up to perform live at the Oscars with Rahman?
I am leaving for Chennai tomorrow and only then will I know what will be my role at the ceremony. I have to first sit and personally wish Rahman for his Oscar nominations.
Do you feel sidelined in spite of having sung a song which has become a worldwide hit?
Working with Rahman means everything to me and frankly when I sing at live concerts the audiences enjoy my song from Fashion (Jalwa) more than anything else. My other song this year that has been a big hit is Haule Haule and I am happy with all my songs. I have sung limited but different and interested numbers.
Did you ever feel that Jai Ho and Slumdog will become such a huge hit?
I always knew that Rahman will be nominated for Oscars as well as Golden Globe. I always call him Mr International as his music sounds very western. He doesn’t agree with me though and says “Sukhvinder, just concentrate.” As far as me predicting Jai Ho’s success is concerned, when you record with Rahman you have no clue which film the song is going to get used in. I never knew he was going to use Ramta Jogi for Taal, Rut Aa gayi Re for 1947 Earth etc so likewise didn’t know Jai Ho will be in Slumdog! But always knew the song was great and required me to sing naughtily.
So Rahman is unpredictable?
Absolutely, when Rahman, Gulzaar saab and I get together we just work for our love for music and songs. Be it at any hour of the night, day, noon... Rahman just calls you in his studio and makes you sing! Many a times you are not even completely awake to sing!
What is next on cards?
I am planning to launch a music album with Rahman and his music school will also be actively involved in it.

Profession: Playback Singer, composer ,Bollywood.
Sukhwinder Singh is one of the most in-demand singers in Bollywood. The Chaiyya Chaiyya man arrived in style. Chaiyya Chaiyya needs no introduction, nor does the Mirchi number from Biwi No. 1 needs a memory test. At a time when all the singers were sounding like twins, with no vigorousness in the voice or intensity in emotion, there came a voice atop a train, which changed many positions in the singing fraternity. Sukhwinder Singh had arrived.
The first stage performance was at the age of 7 – 8 when he sang the Lata number ‘Sa re ga ma pa, pa, pa, ga ma re, ga re mere sang mere saajna’. He also released a Punjabi album called Munda Southhall Da with T – Series and came to collect an award and decided to stay back. He joined Laxmikant Pyarelal’s troupe and quickly became a music arranger. Then as with Hindi film actors, he went looking for work to the south of India and did a film called Rakshagan.
Luck seemed to favour him as he got a break in a Madhuri Dixit starrer called Khilaaf in which he sang a hit song ‘Aa ja sanam’. But the singer himself realised that something was missing in his voice. He left his dream city to tour England and America to learn more about music. Apart from his work with Rahman, Sukhwinder is also engaged in a few other projects. He came back with Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya , with music director Sandeep Chowta. He is planning to set up a high-tech recording studio in Mumbai, to develop more experimental and non-film projects. His Aaj Mera Jee Kardaa (Today My Heart Desires) was featured in the hugely popular Monsoon Wedding and accompanying CD.

Why Gulzar and Sukhwinder Singh Were Missing At The Oscars
The Jai Ho stars failed to receive official letters from the Oscar Committee at the nth minute and could not attend the much-awaited function…
As India was still celebrating the success of Jai Ho, India’s bona fide contribution to the British production Slumdog Millionaire, two of its key participants, singer Sukhvinder Singh and lyricist Gulzar, found themselves watching the event unfold on television, miles away from Los Angeles where they were meant to be.
The irony is sharper for Singh, who was supposed to perform live along with AR Rahman at the 81st Academy Awards ceremony at Kodak Theatre. The singer and lyricist could not make it to the event because their paperwork was botched. Their absence has raised quite a few eyebrows in the music industry.
A reliable source close to the singer said, “Sukhwinder was charged up and was looking forward to the live performance at the Oscar event. Rahman had worked out an updated version of Jai Ho and the two were to sing the new version at the event.”
However, Sukhwinder was surprised to learn that he had not received the official work permit letter from the Oscar authorities. “A work permit letter is required because Sukhwinder was to perform there. Sukhwinder had even completed all the formalities, sending across a photocopy of his passport along with the required important documents. But somebody goofed up.” Whether the balls-up came from Rahman’s end or Foxlight Productions is still a mystery.
Sukhwinder has some esteemed shoulders to cry on. Gulzar too failed to receive an official letter from the Oscar committee. “Gulzar was looking forward to the event too, but missed it because no letter came.”
Sukhwinder, when contacted, confirmed that attending and performing at the Oscar night remained a dream. “Yes it is true that I did not receive any official intimation from there and therefore I could not make it to the event. I don’t know what went wrong. Rahman and I are like brothers and he is not responsible for this. In fact, he was the one who insisted on my performance at the event. Somewhere, someone must have goofed up but I don’t know who is responsible for it.”
Gulzar remained unavailable for comment. Composed by AR Rahman and penned by lyricist Gulzar, the song Jai Ho won the Oscar in the Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score category.

Sukhwinder misses Oscar Ceremony but happy for Rahman
Mumbai, Feb 24 (IANS) He was to have performed with music maestro A.R. Rahman at the 81st Annual Academy Awards but could not due to some snag. But 'Jai ho' singer Sukhwinder Singh is extremely happy at Rahman's twin wins at the Oscars.
Reports earlier said that both Sukhwinder and Rahman were to perform the 'Slumdog Millionaire' song live at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles. However, it was only Rahman who finally took centrestage.
Sukhwinder told a national daily that he couldn't go as his papers were not processed in time for him to catch the flight to Los Angeles.
But he said he is delighted for Rahman and that he always wanted an international honour for the ace composer, who brought him to the limelight with the 'Chhaiyan Chhaiyan' number in 'Dil Se'.
'One thing that I was missing since seven-eight years was an international award for Rahman, because I knew he truly deserved it. But today it has happened and I'm very happy about it,' Sukhwinder told reporters here.
Rahman became the first Indian to bag two Oscars, including one for best original score and the other for best original song ('Jai ho'), which he also shared with lyricist Gulzar.
Sukhwinder says he was confident that 'Jai ho' would go places.
'I knew 'Jai ho' will definitely go places because it's a song full of fun,' said Sukhwinder.
The versatile singer with a rustic voice said that he enjoyed the song so much that while he was recording it with Rahman, he insisted on singing it multiple times.
'When we were sitting in the studio and recording, I sang the song once, but told Rahman that I'm not convinced and sang it again.'
'Then I sang it for the third time on the same pretext. Suddenly, Gulzar stopped me. He told me that the song is full of naughtiness and I am naughty too. He was right! I was really enjoying the song and that's why I wanted to sing it again and again,' he added.
So did he expect the song to win an Oscar?
'When Rahman and I work, we only concentrate on the poetry and nothing else,' said the singer, adding that he had completed the recording of the song in half an hour.
