Krishna Kumar Menon Know As Kay Kay
Music interview: K. K.
"When I sing, I give my heart and soul"
Krishna Kumar Kunnath better known as K K is on a high note in his singing career. He surely has come a long way since ‘Chodh aaye hum who galiyan…’ and ‘Chappa chappa…’ (MAACHIS).
K K has worked with all the top music directors including A R Rahman, Ismail Darbar, Nadeem-Shravan, Anu Malik, Shankar Ehsaan & Loy, Himmesh Reshammiya, Sandesh, M M Kreem, Jatin-Lalit, Vishal Shekhar, Pritam and Saleem Suleman. K K has also lent his voice for most of the top stars in the industry from Amitabh Bachchan to Hrithik Roshan and Tusshar Kapoor to Akshaye Khanna.
Down South, he has worked with well-known maestro Ilayaraja, Harris Jayraj, Deva, Vidyasagar and Mani Sharma.
KK shares his views and experience:
What was your childhood aspiration?
As a child I wanted to be a doctor. Destiny made me a singer instead. I am a commerce graduate from Delhi University. I realized very late in my life that I could make singing as my career. I am a die-hard fan of Kishore Kumar. I switched from Hindi to English songs during my teens. I got offers from various ad agencies in Delhi for jingles. I formed a rock band with my friends and played drums for two other rock bands and did vocals.
After college I did a brief stint as a marketing executive but after eight months I gave up the job. I then married my childhood sweetheart Jyothy in 1991. I came to Mumbai in 1994 and gave my demo tape to Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot, Shiv Mathur and Leslie Lewis to get a break in the music scene.
In 1994, UTV gave me his first break in Mumbai and since then I have never looked back. I worked with my mentor Leslie Lewis in my first jingle in Mumbai and success followed soon. In a span of four years, I sang around 3500 jingles in 11 Indian languages. Vishal Bhardwaj, who noticed me, gave me the much-needed break in Hindi cinema in MAACHIS. I was one of the playback singers in Gulzar’S*** number 'Chodh aaye hum woh galiyan'…and Vishal Bhardwaj also gave me his first solo number in HUM PAANCHI EK DAAL KE.
Any awards?
In 1999, I got the prestigious SCREEN Award as the Best Singer for my solo (non – filmy) album PAL under SONY MUSIC. I teamed up with his mentor Leslie Lewis for PAL.
Tell us about your songs in various languages and concerts.
I have sung near about 400 songs in Hindi and more than 100 songs in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada languages in a short span. I have performed live concerts for Corporate Giants like Hero Honda, Toyota, Glaxo, Seagram’s, IBM, Sun Microsoft, Microsoft, Fidelity, Citibank, INLFS, LG, Sony Eriksson, Air Sahara, Ultra Tech Cement, JP Cement, and many more. I have also performed for schools, Colleges, and other educational institute like IIT Kanpur, IIT Khadakpur, IIT Rurki, IIT Chennai, MDI-Gurgaon, IIMS-Lucknow, and HT Youth Nexus.
How do you feel to be a busy singer?
I really get drain out if I have to sing more than two songs a day. When I sing, I give my heart and soul to give that emotional touch to each song. It’s very important for me to understand what are the scenes and emotions attached before and after the song. It helps.
How do you balance your personal and professional lives?
I have been very fortunate to have worked with all the best people in the industry. I prefer to spend some quality time with my family. I work less because I want to enjoy my work and life to my heart’s content.”
Can you tell about your strength and weakness?
I know my limitations as a singer. My strength lies in my ability to emote well, when I sing. Since I have had no formal training in music I do take time to pick up classical aalaps. However, I overcome this weakness by my ability to pick up things quick and with true devotion. I never expected to be a playback singer in my life. Destiny surely shaped me up to be one and I have taken God’s choice in my stride with great humility.

Kabhi hai maut ka andhera

Krishna Kumar Menon
. Krishna Kumar Menon Born August 23, 1970 (1970-08-23) (age 37) Trichur, Kerala, India Genre(s) Playback singing Occupation(s) Singer Years active 1996–present
Krishna Kumar Menon (also known as K.K. or Kay Kay) is an Indian playback singer from Kerala. He is a prominent singer in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu films. His name is often confused with the similar screen name of a Bollywood actor, Kay Kay Menon.
Krishnakumar Menon was brought up in New Delhi. A graduate of Delhi University, he waited at tables for six months before he got his break, singing in a jingle for a commercial. He appeared in "Josh of India" song for the support of Indian Cricket Team during Cricket World Cup 1999. Following this, he released an album called 'Pal', the title song of which struck a chord with listeners. Songs titled "Aap ki Dua" and "Yaaron" from the same album were also popular.
His first song for a Bollywood flick was "Chhod Aaye Hum" (Maachis). But it was the song "Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil", from the movie Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, that brought him into limelight.
Starting off from Hindi, he sang his way to the southern part of the country, singing in Tamil, Telugu and even Kannada; the song "Uyirin Uyirae" from the Tamil movie "Kakha Kakha" ("Cheliya Cheliya" from the Telugu movie Gharsanna) being one of the better-known songs.
Back in Bollywood, he notched up winners with songs such as "Tu Aashiqui Hai" from "Jhankaar Beats" (for which he received a National Award), "Chand Ki Roshni Se" from "Home Delivery","Awarapan Banjarapan" from "Jism","It's The Time To Disco" from "Kal Ho Naa Ho" and the smash hit "Dus Bahaane" (with Shaan) from the film "Dus". Recently, his hit songs "Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai" from the movie Gangster, "Soniye Soniye" from "Aksar","Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hai" from "Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hai","Alvida Alvida" from "Life in a Metro","Ajab Si" from "Om Shanti Om" and "Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai" from "Woh Lamhe" have cemented his place as one of Bollywood's most talented vocalists.
His distinctive voice, which seems to get even clearer with the increase in pitch, and his style of rendition are his biggest assets.
He created a rage in Tamil with the song "Appadi Podu "
The reclusive singer finally came out of the shadows to be one of the judges in the popular reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005.
One very Popular and recent song that K.K. has sung is called "Ajab Si" from the Film "Om Shanti Om".
On 24th February 2008, he released his second album titled 'Humsafar'.

Bollywood singer Krishna Kumar, fondly called KK by his friends and fans, not only excels in singing but enjoys making his own music too and says, "Composing is an extension of my being, skills and knowledge".
KK donned the hat of music composer for his recently-released album Humsafar - his second after a gap of eight long years. But the singer, whose Aankhon Mein from Om Shanti Om was a chartbuster, says he's taken his own time creating tunes for Humsafar."Turning a music composer is not an instant move. I had composed two songs seven years ago, as I knew what exactly I wanted for my album."
"Turning a music composer is not an instant move. I had composed two songs seven years ago, as I knew what exactly I wanted for my album. Moreover, it is my own baby and I didn't want to take a risk by giving it in someone else's hand," KK told IANS in an interview.
"My fans are another reason - first they murmured, then spoke, then shouted and I had to hear that."
However, he is quick to add that composing one's own music does not "mean that singing songs composed by others does not give me creative satisfaction".
And what about composing music for films?
"I have no plans to compose music for films so far. It is not every one's cup of tea to do that because there are so many logistics to be worked out. But I will definitely compose music for another of my albums in future."
The versatile singer started his stint in Bollywood with hit song Chhod aaye hum in Gulzar's Maachis and went on to entertain audiences with many more popular numbers. But it was his soulful rendition of Tadap tadap ke in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam that catapulted him to fame.
He released his first album Pal in 1999 and the lilting melodies won him many fans.
KK appeared on TV as a jury member for talent hunt show Fame Gurukul, but he is clear that he wouldn't like to return to television as the medium constricts him.
"Television has grown enormously. But I don't think that I'd ever be a part of any TV show, as I am uncomfortable with the small screen. I find it very constricting!" he remarked.
"I like live shows because I am a free soul. In real life also I do whatever I feel like doing and TV makes me feel caged," the singer said.
However, KK is all praise for talent hunt shows, as they bring out latent talent.
"Reality shows are giving a fair chance to singers hailing from far-flung areas like Jharkhand and Jhansi, which otherwise wouldn't have been recognised at all.
"A bit of both deserving and non-deserving aspirants pour into the music industry because of these shows. But only those who are really talented, dedicated and hard working would sustain."
Though gung-ho about his latest album, KK has a lot of singing assignments lined up. He will be lending his voice for Karan Johar's next, Onirban's next and Jannat by newcomer Kunal Deshmukh.
KK says his family is what gives him the strength to cope with all the pressures of Bollywood, where one has to continuously strive to carve one's niche and hold on to it.
"Family makes a lot of difference. One's core of life is one's family because you know that even if everyone else leaves your hand, they will be there through thick and thin. That keeps the ball rolling," he said.

Re: Krishna Kumar Menon Know As Kay Kay
BLISS OF A SONG
I CAN'T SING WHAT I CAN'T FEEL, SAYS PLAYBACK SINGER KK. IN TOWN ON SUNDAY You don't have to be dif- ferent. If you work towards that, things get concocted
No matter the crowd of 40-50 people around him, no matter the cacophony of life…at the recording studio, it's just him & the song. And when the song touches him in there, "that is a moment of bliss for me, bigger than life itself". That's KK, whose angst at his 9 to 5 marketing job made him leave it within four months. That's KK, who admits that a singer is just as good as the song he gets; that's KK, the high point of whose life is music. In City for a private concert, KK appears unassuming, warm and laid back on a Sunday morning at Hotel Taj - getting up to shake hands with those walking into his room, apologising for the delay the interview is causing to the photographers, smiling as he speaks after the interruptions the phone calls make.
KK says he lives in the moment, the effortless moment that is. Something like his voice? Effortless and up there, sans any training… No exaggerations for him too, for there's no point to be proven, right? "You don't have to be different. If you work towards that, things get concocted".
That's why, when nine years after he was first noticed for Tadap tadap and his solo album Pal, KK isn't working towards any frontiers. Today, as he has his second album Humsafar out in the market, all he offers is "melody, soulful - something that if clicks, it clicks, and if it doesn't, it doesn't. Pal stood the test of time. Even today, it is played on radio every two days in Bombay".
It's been 13 years in Mumbai, and without any conscious decisions, he has journeyed through 3,500 jingles, Chod aaya hum wo galiyaan - his first Bollywood break, Tu aashiqui hai - which brought him the National Award and Ajab si his latest chartbuster from Om Shanti Om.
Pal and Tadap tadap happened at the same time and brought in choices - "do what I am good at" or "explore". He chose the latter. "Music directors do not have pre-conceived notions". Like Ilayaraja, who offered him a classical song. "I told him I have no training in classical music. Well, after I had dubbed the song (which he thought was a blunder) and I was leaving, he asked me how much time was there for my flight to leave. Two hours, I answered. 'Can you record another song for me', he asked. That was the biggest compliment for me".
A Keralaite, Krishna Kumar Kunnath aka KK was brought up in Delhi, and school was his first stage. "I would win all the music competitions," he says. And would even sing in the bathroom to demand of the community who lived around. 'Yaar, aaj toone wo gaana nahi gaaya', they would ask and he'd deliver. Just as he does today to his audience that expects from him and, well, has choices galore.
But people want him - the audi ence & his directors. Girls - who ripped his clothes in that girls' col lege in Delhi are past. Among his ar dent fans is his daughter. She loves his songs, but not the videos. "I feature with other women there," he explains.
It's been 13 years in Mumbai. His voice, he feels, has matured, warmed in tone and emotes better, lyrically. And how many times have directors told him - give us KK style. They want emotions, he says.
But there's also a Ding dong ding dole belted out sometimes. "I have to," he says. But he puts his foot down if he doesn't like something. Like those raunchy lyrics he got changed. "I can't sing what I can't feel. It's that simple". And that's KK.

Though gung-ho about his latest album, KK has a lot of singing assignments lined up. He will be lending his voice for Karan Johar's next, Onirban's next and ‘Jannat' by newcomer Kunal Deshmukh.

Singer KK enthrals music lovers
Mysore:
Singer Krishna Kumar Menon, popularly known as KK, has kicked off his tour of South India with a concert in Mysore on Wednesday evening.
Titled Royal Stag Mega Music KK Tour, KK performed at Urs Boarding School grounds here this evening. His next concert under the banner is at Hyderabad on May 21. He sang many of his hit numbers like Tadap Tadap, Awarappan in the concert. Speaking to mediapersons this morning, KK, who has given hits like Tadap Tadap, Tu Aashiqui Hai and Awaarappan, said his next album after ‘Pal’ will be released in September. The album is yet to be named, but five out of eight to ten songs have been recorded. Noted lyricist Mehboob has penned lyrics for the album and the video will be done shortly, he adds.
KK says that he could not do another album immediately after ‘Pal’ as he had focussed on playback singing not only in Hindi but also in South Indian languages like Kannada, Telugu, and Tamil.
“My fans wanted me to release another album following Pal’s popularity. Since I had to consolidate playback singing and I was also touring abroad doing concerts, I could not get time to release another album,” he says.
The untitled album is not basically a concept album as it has different and meaningful melodies, he notes.
KK’s dream to sing for a Bollywood movie materialised when Vishal Bharadwaj asked him to sing ‘Chod Aaye Vo Galiyaan Chod Aaye Hum’ in Gulzar’s ‘Maachis’. But what capatapulted him into the big league was the wildly popular Tadap Tadap in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. It was one of the biggest hits of his career.
For KK, who has sung superhit songs in Jism, Jhankar Beats, Kal Ho Na Ho and the more recent Main Hoo Na, Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar are the inspiration. Pink Flyod, Extreme, Sting, Billy Joel, Guns N Roses, Deep Purple and Jethro Tull were some of his earliest influencers.

God has been really kind. I’ve been bestowed with loads of hits in the past couple of months and that’s quite encouraging.
Do you get to watch the flicks you sing for?
I’ve watched quite a few in the recent past— Bachna Ae Haseeno, Om Shanti Om and Jannat. It feels good to hear myself onscreen.
With offers pouring by the dozens, you had once said that you hardly remember the names of the films that you sing for...
Honestly speaking, I don’t. There’s no diary where I jot down the film names. At the moment, all I can tell you is that I’ve sung for Sorry Bhai, Raaz 2, Billo Barber and Kites. But beyond four-five names, my memory fails.
Why do we fail to see you on reality TV?
I don’t like TV much. I don’t even watch it. Shaan has asked me the same question a number of times, but I don’t think I would be half as comfortable as he is on TV. I guess, KK is only to be heard... apart from live shows that is. Now, I’ve featured in my music videos too. But what can I do if they not aired often enough?
Singers can be friends then...
Oh yes! I share a great rapport with Sunidhi, Shaan and Kunal. Though we don’t sit in each other’s pockets all the time, we do meet and hang around once in a while. And we usually start off where we had ended off. I wouldn’t say there’s no competition in the music industry. But it’s healthy.
Actors/directors are getting into music. So is competition stiffening?
Our industry is like a hotel lobby. You can hang around and do your thing, but not everything can get you noticed. The audience will only buy your music, if you are worth it.
Which song of yours do you keep humming to yourself?
I don’t want to sound like a narcissist! But I do sing Pal and Kyon Ajkal to my wife, Jyoti and kids. In fact, my daughter flips through radio channels, to hear my songs. Apart from Shaan uncle, Sunidhi aunty and me, she refuses to recognise anybody else!
How different is the Kolkata crowd from that in Mumbai?
Kolkatans are discerning people, who are all for masti. It’s great to sing for them and they make me reaffirm my faith in myself. I hardly perform in Mumbai and even when I do, I come across people who tell me, ‘Beta yeh gaana kya tumne gaya?’ I know my poor PR skills are to be blamed for this.
In the software-driven industry, melody seems to have taken a backseat...
Not really. Shaan’s song in Saawariya or my Ajaab si in OSO, are such melodious numbers. Everybody is trying their best to bring melody back. In fact, over the years I’ve learnt the importance of melody. I wouldn’t ever sing a number which is cheap and has crass lyrics. Not everything can be bought with money... definitely not my voice and I’m the last person to be working just for money.
What’s your USP?
I’ve never thought of myself as a product. So, no selling point for me please!
