Singer Lata Mangeshkar, who mesmerised millions with her golden voice in a career spanning seven decades, turned 81 today, spending a quiet day with the family even as fans, including famous names, wished her a happy birthday.
The Bharat Ratna winning singer who has lent her voice to generations of Bollywood actresses from Madhubala to Kajol, is celebrating her birthday in her ancestral home in Kolhapur, said sources close to her.
"I don't celebrate my birthday. I performed the Puja and 28th September is just like any other day for me," Lata said in an interview.
The evergreen singer held the Guinness World Records for having recorded the most songs in the world from 1974 to 1991 and continues to be the favourite singer of top filmmakers like Yash Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
Meanwhile younger sister and fellow singing legend, Asha Bhonsle, led a host of A-listers who wished the singer on Twitter.
"My favourite Female Singer and also my Elder Sister Latadidi celebrates her Birthday today. Too bad I'm in Hong Kong & can't attend her birthday. Will miss her as I am in Hong Kong, but my well wishes are always with Lata didi (sic)," wrote Bhonsle who also posted a old picture of them together.
Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, who has collaborated with the singer in films like Jail and Page 3, was among the first to wish the acclaimed singer.
"Wishing u Lata Didi many happy returns of the day....May god bless u with good health..love..,nd peace (sic)," Bhandarkar tweeted.
Lata too is an active member of the micro blogging site and had posted a message yesterday thanking all her fans.
"I feel fortunate that my birthday falls close to two of my favourite people- freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and filmmaker Yash Chopra. I send my best wishes to Yash ji and pray that he lives for another hundred years," Lata had tweeted.
Starting her career in 1942 with songs in Marathi, Lata's first Hindi song was Paa lagoon kar jori for Vasant Joglekar's movie Aap Ki Seva Mein in 1946.
Two years later, composer Ghulam Haider gave Lata her first major break with the song Dil mera toda in Majboor and rest has been history.
Lata went on to record songs for over 1,000 Bollywood movies and has sung in more than 36 regional Indian languages.
The singer has lent her voice to some of the most popular and evergreen songs in film history including Pyar kiya to darna kya from Mughal-e-Azam, Aaja re pardesi from Madhumati and Bahon mein chale aao from Anamika among hundred others.
Lata continues to lend her voice to select projects and is excited about her soon to be released duet with Shehanshah-e-Ghazal Mehdi Hassan.
"Mehdi Saab always wanted to sing with me. In fact he sent me 2-3 recorded songs years back but he had to quit singing due to his prolonged illness.
"Tera milna is one of them. I recorded my version in Mumbai and Mehdi Saab's version was recorded in Pakistan a year back. We have made a duet compiling the two versions," said Lata.

There was a time when music historian and former Illustrated Weekly journalist Raju Bharatan would frequent the music rooms of legendary music directors like Naushad, Shankar Jaikishan, Sri Ramachandra. He would have casual conversations with singers Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi while they waited for the recording to begin, share jokes and trade secrets. “We became great friends over a period of time. So when I say that Manna Dey was scared of performing with Bhimsen Joshi, it is because I was there and he told me,” says Bharatan.
Now, almost 15-years after he wrote a controversial biography on melody queen Lata Mangeshkar, Mumbai-based Bharatan’s anecdotes about these legendary musicians have found their way in to his latest book, A Journey Down the Melody Lane (Hay House,
Rs 399). It’s an elaborate account of a time when some of the best melodies in the Indian music industry was being composed. “This book took six months to write. I already had everything ready in my head. It was only a matter of sitting down with it and reconstructing all that happened in the past 60 years of our Hindustani cine sangeet,” says Bharatan, 77.
One of his concerns while writing the book was the existence of wrong information, some even in archives. “Talat Mahmood’s Tasveer banata hoon... was composed by music director Nashad, but is attributed to famous composer Naushad of Mughal-e-Azam fame in almost every archive. The poor chap totally went unnoticed inspite of a decent composition,” says Bharatan.
The book also reflects Bharatan’s understanding of the intricacies of Hindustani film sangeet. He intersperses it with amusing nuggets like how Lata Mangeshkar was addicted to Wrigley’s chewing gum, loved wearing jeans, but never wore it outside her hotel room during concerts in America. He talks of how Rafi was the original choice for the popular songs from the movie Aradhana, instead of Kishore Kumar; how Mangeshkar’s famous Aye Mere Watan ke logon was to be sung by both her and sister Asha Bhosle, had lyricist Pradeep not forgotten to inform the latter. There are also instances of rifts between famous musicians.
“I became a music writer because of Mangeshkar but it is true that many other senior singers like Runa Laila, Sulakshana Pandit and Vani Jayaram were less popular or quit Bollywood because the industry was dominated by the two sisters,” says Bharatan who has also included chapters on AR Rahman and Shankar Ehsaan Loy in the final section.

The twitter world is quite a busy one, and Bollywood contributes a great deal to it. Here's looking at the best star tweets of the day.
It isn't often that Lata Mangeshkar shows her disappointment publicly.
But when she caught the Filmfare awards on television last night, she wasn't too happy with it.
She expressed herself with a tweet: 'namaskar, main filmfare awards function television pe dekh rahi hun, usme abhi thodi der pehele dikhaya gaya ki lata mangeshkar ne kaha tha ki filmfare award mujhe rumaal me lapetke dijiye,ye padhke mujhe bahot ascharya hua,kyo ki maine aisa na kabhi kaha aur na kabhi kahungi, mere liye har award logo'n ka pyar aur aashirwad hai, filmfare jaise popular awards mein istarhah ki galat baat likhna ya batana acchi baat nahi ye mujhe bade afsos ke saath kehena pad raha hai....' (I was watching the Filmfare awards function on television and, a little while ago, they said Lata Mangeshkar stated she wants the Filmfare award wrapped in a handkerchief. I was very surprised as I have never, and will never, say something like this. For me, every award is a sign of people's love and blessings. I'm very sorry to have to say it but it's not nice for a popular award show like Filmfare to show something wrong like this.)
Konkona Sen Sharma also seemed upset with the Filmfare awards. 'How come some awardees get to give a vote of thanks and some don't? So apparently filmfare gives them 5 min each, but Sony has final edit. Either way, not fair no?' she tweeted.

Born to sing: Lata turns 82
Indo-Asian News Service Wednesday, September 28, 2011 (Mumbai)
One of the gems of the Hindi film industry, Lata Mangeshkar turns 82 and even after spreading the magic of her voice for seven decades she is still singing songs with aplomb.
Thanks to her successful long journey and her body of work, she has become an institution in herself and a guiding force not just for budding singers, but also for established artists.
"It's our good fortune that we have taken birth in the times of Lataji. She is our goddess of music and she is always going to be an inspiration for our generation and the generations to come," singer Sonu Niigaam told IANS.
Starting her career in 1943 at the age of 13 with the song Mata ek sapoot ki duniya badal de tu for Marathi film Gajaabhaau, Lata, who is called the Nightingale of India, went on to record songs for more than 1,000 films in 36 languages.
From classical to romantic numbers to ghazals to bhajans, she made her mark in a variety of genres.
Even at this age her zeal to sing is the same which was evident when she sang Tere hasne se for Satrangee Parachute that released this year.
"Lataji is my teacher, my inspiration and it is because of her that I've loved music so much. I want to wish her all the happiness in the world," said Shreya Ghoshal.
Shaan says that "Whatever you say about Lataji is less. All I want to say is that the divinity that she has in her voice is unique and very different. Whatever the song might be, she adds dignity to it. Very subtly she brings out the expressions in a song. She is an institute in herself and the only one among so many."
Lata, who is the voice behind evergreen lilting melodies like Aaja re pardesi, Kahi deep jale kahi dil, Beeti na bitaai raina, Tere bina zindagi se, Tere bina jiya jaaye na, Naino mein badra, Chalte chalte and Yaara sili sili, made it to then Guinness Book of World Records from 1974 to 1991 for having made the most recordings in the world.
Not just for singers, for actors and filmmakers too, the Bharat Ratna recipient is the voice that gave Hindi songs the quality that will be remembered for years.
"I think for any actress Lataji singing for her is a blessing because we all know what incredible talent she has. We can only hope that she lives for many many years to come and sings forever," said Dia Mirza.
Filmmaker Yash Chopra feels proud that an artist like Lata was born on Indian soil.
"For an artiste to be at the pinnacle of her career for 69 uninterrupted years is an unprecedented feat in any field anywhere in the world and we are proud that an Indian, our very own Lata Mangeshkar, has achieved this," Chopra had told IANS.
"I have been fortunate to have worked with her for over five decades from my very first film, Dhool Ka Phool till my most recent film Veer Zaara.
"As a director, I can vouch that Lataji makes each song her own. She adds so many characteristic nuances, making it easier for an actress to enact and for the song to stand the test of time. They say that people follow music, but in Lataji's case, music follows her.

Was scared of seeing Hazarika in pain: Lata
Indo-Asian News Service Mumbai, November 08, 2011
Mourning the death of Bhupen Hazarika, Lata Mangeshkar says there won't be another one like him and that she not only fell in love with his music but enjoyed his company as he was always full of life and joy.
"I sang for him way back in the 1950s in Assamese. I was scared of getting the pronunciation wrong. But he was confident. And I was game since I love singing in various languages. And the song was so lovely Jo Na Kare Rati. I fell in love with Bhupenda's music," she said.
"Our association began from there, and continued through decades. He became close to my entire family specially my youngest sister Usha who sang innumerable Assamese songs for him," she added.
Legendary singer-composer Hazarika died of multiple organ failure at a Mumbai hospital Saturday. He was 85. His funeral is due on Wednesday.
Lata remembers staying at his home in Kolkata and says he was a good host.
"I had gone for the recording of some Bengali songs for Bhupenda in Kolkata. I stayed with him and his wife (Priyamvada Patel) in their home. They made me so comfortable. There're very few people in my life I felt so relaxed with.
Bhupenda was always full of life and joy, so much so that I hated the thought of him being ill," she added.
"Two years ago he came home. I was dismayed by the change in his health. Seeing him so frail, I was depressed. From then onwards I didn't have the heart to meet him. I was supposed to record a song with him, I chickened out.
"I am frightened of seeing loved ones in pain. When my mother fell ill, I had to be dragged by the rest of the family to see her. But I kept abreast of his health through my sister Usha who was on the SMS with Kalpana Lajmi (Hazarika's companion). I got to know of his hospitalization. He was really in pain.
"When I heard of his illness, I rang him up in the hospital. Kalpna put the phone to his ear. I believe Bhupenda responded to my voice. They even played my songs for him in the hospital. I know he was very fond of me and my singing. And I of him. Three days ago, a journalist came to me saying Bhupenda was very critical. I recorded my get-well message for him. Then, it was over," said Lata.
The legendary singer is all praise for Kalpana for looking after the late singer so well.
"The way Kalpana put her entire life on the shelf to look after him till the end is exemplary. She made sure he was in the best hospital and got the best treatment. Such dedication is rare in today's world," said Lata.
"My most popular song for Bhupenda in Hindi was Dil Hoom Hoom Kare. The composition was very special. Bhupenda sang the song originally in Assamese. Today, I smile as I remember how entertaining he was in person. I enjoyed his company. And I enjoyed singing his songs. There will never be another Bhupen Hazarika," she added.

Following rumours of Lata Mangeshkar's health scare, the singer has finally resorted to Twitter to re-assure fans of her well-being. She tweeted: "Namaskar. Pls don't believe any rumors which are doing the rounds about my health & well-being. All is well, by the Grace of God
Speculations about the 83-year-old singer's ill-health have been going on from a long time. After the singer's tweet last night, her fans were relieved.
She was last seen in public on September 28.
Her latest tweet reads: "Namaskar. Sharing some thoughts which I read with my Twitter family: If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude. Remember, we all stumble, everyone of us. That's why it's a comfort to go hand in hand
