PICTURE PERFECT: Dhak dhak girl Madhuri Dixit with husband Shriram Nene and her sons at the Sidhivinayak temple in Mumbai (TOI Photo)

MUMBAI: When Madhuri Dixit reported on the sets of Aaja Naachley , Yash Chopra dropped in to welcome her. And what's more? He even arranged for a special playing area for her sons. He just wanted to make it a little special as the diva is making a comeback after several years.

Madhuri reached the sets around 6.30 pm, shot through the night and reached home at 8 in the morning.

“When I left, it was time for my kids to sleep. They were not even aware that I was out shooting all night. Next morning they woke up and came to my room. When my elder son saw me sleeping, he whispered into my ear, 'Mommy, good morning. Why are you still sleeping? Get up, mommy.' And then he tried to open my eyelids, finally I had to get up. I am feeling so sleepy now," Madhuri, said.

The dhak-dhak girl said that her first day of shooting was indeed memorable.

“I was touched to see Yash ji , who came personally to greet me. I had to do an interactive scene with my co-actors in the film. I can't reveal the scene, but it was an important scene in the film. When I finished the first take, everyone present there clapped. It was a very emotional moment for me," she said.

Was she comfortable leaving her kids at home?

“It was a strange feeling. Since the time I have become a mother, I have never been away from my kids. But I am lucky that the first schedule of the film requires a night shift. So when I am shooting, I know that they are sleeping,” she smiles.

But what when the night shifts end?

“I am aware of that, so I will take my kids along with me. Yash ji has been very kind and has got a toy house installed for my kids. He said, 'We'll take care of your kids.' I am glad that I am working with such caring people," she said.

Meanwhile, her husband Sreeram Nene has left for USA. “Ram has gone back; he was here for a vacation. Now, my grandparents, parents and Ram's mother are taking care of my kids when I am not around,” she went on to say.

Madhuri said that when she was putting on false eyelashes, her elder son asked her, "What are these for?" When she explained that she needs to put all these to look good on screen, her son said, "But why so much make-up? You look nice without the false eyelashes.”

The diva feels that it's very difficult to balance work and home. “My elder son is growing and he wants to know about everything. The other day he was asking me, ‘Mummy, I know that daddy is a doctor, but what work do you do?' It took me some time to explain it to him. After listening to everything, he looked at me and told me, 'But mummy I will never be able to become an actor.' When I asked him the reason, he thought for a while and told me, 'I don't have false eyelashes!' It's a fantastic feeling to talk to kids and know their mind."

Now that she has donned the grease paint again, does she feel a constant pressure to prove herself one more time?

“I don't need to prove anything. But I would agree that I know that people expect certain things from me and I am trying to live up to those. I was nervous during the first take, but gradually everything was fine. Acting is like swimming, you never forget it,” she says

Madhuri to make comeback with Yashraj Films
OCT 18 - The dhak dhak girl of eighties, Madhuri is finally making a comeback in films - in a grand style. She is doing a film with India’s premier film production house, Yashraj Films. The film is to be directed to by ace cinematographer Anil Mehta.

Apparently, Madhuri loved the script so much that she could not resist the offer to do the film. Rumors of her doing Rikku Rakeshnath’s film first have been put to rest by her signing Yashraj’s film. The lead actor of the film is yet to be decided but going by Yashraj’s track record, one can expect a superstar to be signed very soon. The film promises to be an out and out entertainer.

The shooting of the film commences in January 2007. Madhuri is expected to come to India very soon. Even though being offered so many films, Madhuri cannot do so many films as she has to take care of her two sons, three-year-old Arin and one-year-old Ryan.

Madhuri, who captivated the hearts of millions with performances in "Tezaab", "Beta" and "Saajan", was last seen in the blockbuster “Devdas” along with Ashwariya Rai and Sharukh Khan.

Madhuri Dixit Biography

Madhuri wanted to become a micro-biologist - however that just wasn't destined to be.   An offer from Rajishri Productions brought Madhuri her first role, the film `Abodh' (1986) released and forgotten, it wasn't until godfather Ghai saw Madhuri and gave her a tiny dance sequence in `Karma' (1986), that things improved.  The dance sequence was omitted from the final cut.  Ghai promised Madhuri better  roles, on the condition that she stop doing tiny roles in insignificant films.  Thus, Ghai gave Madhuri `Uttar Dakshin', and then a proper launch in `Ram Lakhan' (1988).  Ghai also took the step of putting an eight page advertisement in the trade magazines featuring Madhuri, proclaiming that producers of the calibre of Boney Kapoor, Yash Chopra and six others had signed Madhuri for their forthcoming projects.   It was all together another matter  that none of the forementioned producers had signed Madhuri for  their films.

Madhuri however, didn't have to wait for Ghai's `Ram Lakhan', N.Chandra's `Tezaab' and ek, do, teen char took the nation by storm, Miss Dixit had arrived, and the whole world knew.  Tezaab went on to complete a golden jubilee, and was thus a bigger hit than Ram Lakhan.

A superb performance followed in Dil (1990) - which brought Madhuri her first Filmfare award, a rapport was struck with Indra Kumar which resulted in two more blockbusters Beta (1991) and Raja (1995).  1990 onwards, a hit film per year followed including Saajan, Khalnayak, Prem Pratigaya, cumulating in Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994), hindi cinema's biggest blockbuster to date.  Madhuri mania ensured the success of `Raja' (1995), a film with many flaws, thus Madhuri was renamed `the female Amitabh Bachchan'.

Unfortunately after the success of `Raja' (1995), Madhuri's films started to collapse at the box office.  Yaarana, Rajkumar, Prem Granth, Mahaanta, one after the other.   Luckily for Madhuri she gained praise for her performance in `Prem Granth' (1996) and for her looks in `Rajkumar' (1996).  By now it had dawned on the industry  that Madhuri's lataks and mataks ensure a films success, not.

The presswallas had by now written Madhuris obitury, and annouced that it was time for Madhuri to pack her bags and get married.  An issue was made of Madhuri co-starring with Akshaye Khanna who was younger in age to Madhuri in Mohabbat.  It was also widely stated that Madhuri favoured films produced by her secretary Rikhu, even though all of Rikhus productions failed at the box-office.  Madhuri was never far from controversy, her much publiced affair? with Sunjay Dutt caused a storm, when Sunjay's wife issued a press statement proclaiming her desire to have Sunjay back.  The Choli ke peeche song in Khalnayak also caused a stir.  With women liberation groups asked for a ban on Madhuri. After   the not so great Koyla, director Rakesh Roshan stated that Madhuri could no longer play the youthful type, and continued to make unsavoury comments.  Madhuris response was a dignified silence.  Madhuri is on top of the league when it comes to being unaffected by what is written about her.  Very rarely if ever has Madhuri retaliated to comments made abouther  in the press, by either journos or collegues.

Prakash Jha's `Mrityudand' (1997) ensured critical acclaim if not box-office success, Madhuri still had the fire that was shown in Tezaab, the intensity that came to light in Beta.  Age, said the industry was catching up, Yash Chopra's Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997), proved otherwise. A phenomenal success at the box-office, mass acceptance by the audience.  Madhuri never looked  better, danced better or  acted better, her latest offering was indeed her best till date.  Madhuri went on to win a handful of awards for her performances in Mrityudand and Dil Toh Pagal Hai, and even dedicated her Filmfare award to her critics.

In 1998 Madhuri had only one major film to her credit CN Chandra's Wajood, unfortunately the film failed to recreate the hysteria of Tezaab (1988).   1999 it seems will be Madhuri's golden year, for an actress who rarely trends the path of unconvential roles, this year has Madhuri in a host of different characters.   MF Hussain's `Gajagamini' is an art film that has Madhuri playing a range of characters.  In Boney Kapoor's `Pukar' Madhuri's got a negative role, as well as the usual dose of triangular love stories, Madhuri's first south Indian film, `Engineer', is a techno thriller.

On a personal note, Madhuris still looking for prince charming, she says he doesn't have to be rich millionaire or an intellect, but what does he have to be?  Someone understanding,  thoughtful and someone who'll love her unconditionally.

Madhuri, making a comeback in Bollywood with Aaja Naachley, said young aspirants were lucky to be able to study the craft.

``We never had this kind of school to guide us through, we joined and learned on our own,'' Ghai quoted Madhuri as saying.

Ghai said he was proud to see Madhuri speak about filmmaking.

Madhuri holidays in Mauritius
[]
May 31, 2007

Madhuri DixitDid you know that soon after her birthday celebrations, actress Madhuri Dixit did not return to the US, but received a surprise holiday gift from husband Dr Sri Ram Nene. Her husband came to Mumbai and gave her and the kids a surprise holiday in Mauritius before returning home!

Madhuri, 39, recently completed her comeback film, Aaja Nachle in a record span of four months. She came to Mumbai with her children, put them in play school and got down to rigorous rehearsals every day before she went to the studio for the shoots. She worked with choreographer
r Vaibhavi Merchant overtime to master the skills of dancing because the film is the story of a dancer.

Madhuri also took her children to movies, restaurants and malls to plat games - wearing a burqa to hide herself from the crowds who could have mobbed her otherwise. She entertained her in-laws like a good daughter-in-law and gave treats to her parents too.

What more could a woman do to impress a husband? Nothing, feels Dr. Nene, who came all the way to Mumbai to announce that he would take Mads, the kids and his in-laws to Mauritius for a well-deserved holiday.

Though she had many offers, Madhuri chose to work in the Yashraj films' project, directed by Anil Mehta .

Set in the theatre world, the film depicts the journey of an aging actress. Though she has played a dancer in films like Tezaab and Dil To Pagal Hai,  this is the first time Madhuri is playing a theatre artiste. The film is in its completion stage and
may be screened at cinema halls in November.

The dhak dhak girl, as Madhuri is fondly called, danced her way into millions of hearts with the evergreen number Ek do teen... in ‘Tezaab’ in 1988. Both the film and the song
were smash hits.

"I hope I'm not sounding presumptuous or vain. I think like Sridevi , I was another heroine who could break the barriers between the classes and the masses," Madhuri was quoted as saying earlier.

Madhuri started her acting career with Kranthi Kumar's ‘Swati’ in 1986 but then featured in dam squibs like ‘Abodh’. It was ‘Tezaab’ that launched her into the star league. Madhuri's career witnessed a meteoric rise after the film's phenomenal success.

Move buffs remember her performances in songs like Bada dukh dina (‘Ram Lakhan’), Dhak dhak ( Beta ), Chane ke kheth mein (‘Anjaam’), Choli ke peechche ( Khalnayak ), and Maar dala ( Devdaas ).

"She is a wonderfully graceful dancer and never looks unbecoming, no matter how cheap the movements are," director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was quoted as saying in an interview while he was making ‘Devdaas’ with her. He is a huge fan of Madhuri and claims she is the best dancer in Bollywood.

Apart from being a great dancer, Madhuri proved her acting skill
, Parinda , ‘Khalnayak’. She starred opposite Salman Khan in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun , which is often called the crowning glory of her career.

Madhuri also found a fan in renowned painter M F Hussain, who later made a movie called ‘Gaja Gamini’ - a tribute to the actress' beauty and talent. The two continue to be in touch.

Madhuri has won four Filmfare awards for Best Actress and was also honoured with the Best National Citizens Award in 2001.

Madhuri’s career suffered a slide after Anjaam , which was followed by a series of flops like Raja and Rajkumar . She, however, did regain some ground with her performance in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’.

Bhansali's magnum opus ‘Devdaas’ became her swan song after which she joined her husband in the US and is now the proud mother of two sons. ‘Aaja Naachley’ will hopefully bring her more awards and accolades.

NRI Madhuri doesn't miss the hustle and bustle of Bollywood.

Madhuri misses the dhak-dhak days

Mumbai, March 28, 2006
IANS

Madhuri Dixit, now holidaying in Mumbai, says she reminisces about her years in the film industry but doesn't miss the hustle and bustle of Bollywood.

The actress, who shifted to the US after marrying an NRI doctor, says: "I miss my craft, the preparation for scenes, the nervousness before every shot and all that dhak-dhak."

Madhuri is planning a comeback and getting good offers too, but her priority is location.

Excerpts:

It would be difficult for the producers in Mumbai to reach you in LA?

The world is becoming such a small place. People sitting in Hong Kong do business with people in India. So communication is not a problem.

Most people feel there can never be another Madhuri Dixit.
In fact, the audiences still send me fan mails. It is a beautiful feeling to be loved and cherished. Talent never dies. I was very apprehensive about dancing on stage. I hadn't done it for four years. To my surprise, it wasn't difficult.

Even Sarojji (Khan) said it didn't look like I had been away for so long. Acting and dancing are hard to forget.

Madhuri Dixit, now holidaying in Mumbai, says she reminisces about her years in the film industry but doesn't miss the hustle and bustle of Bollywood.

Do you miss the film industry?

It depends on what you mean by the industry. If you mean the paraphernalia, then I don't miss that. But I miss my craft, the preparation for scenes, the nervousness before every shot and all that dhak dhak....
But I hardly have time to think of all this in LA. My kids are young - one and three years old - and demanding. But in a quiet moment I do think about my studio life.

Do you miss the adulation?

Not at all! I am too busy being the wife and mom. It was a dream for me to have my own family. And I have it today. I grew up in a big family. It was very important for me to have one of my own... as important as my stardom, in fact more... I enjoyed the acting. But I was sure of how many years I'd give my career. After enjoying every bit of that I'm now enjoying domesticity.

You have come back to a different film industry...
Yes I have. Today's films are technically so much more advanced. And since Hindi cinema now goes to many parts of the world, they are aesthetically far better than the films earlier on. I look at some my earlier films and cringe.

But that was what filmmaking was about then. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Though it's great to see the changes. I love the care taken to look into details.

Do you have lots of friends in the industry?

Not very many. But yes I have lots of well-wishers. And I know if they have something in mind, they'll approach me. The project has to be worth my while. Actually there were three films I was supposed to do two years ago. But they didn't happen because I got pregnant.

I guess at that point of time bringing up a baby was more exciting than doing a movie. Now people who come to me, do so with concrete characters and not just random offers. That's wonderful. I am open to all kinds offers as long as I am not asked to do anything boring.

Have you watched any films lately?

I saw a few songs of Bunty Aur Babli. I love the song Kajra re. Parineeta is the only one film I have seen and I liked it.

Post Madhuri Dixit.....The Return Of The Dhak-dhak Girl

Biography

Madhuri Dixit was born on 15 May '67 in a middle class family to "Shankar" and "Sneha Latha Dixit". She's called Bubbly" at home and has got two sisies and one brother. Madhuri Dixit made a humble beginning with the Rajshris. The film was called Abodh and had the then Tollywood (Calcutta) superstar Tapash Pal cast as her hero.

This beautiful, slim, svelte and charming young girl has captivated the hearts of millions in INDIA with just one number - "Ek Do Teen" in "TEJAAB", her second film that catapulted her to the limelight all of a sudden makin' the movie a blockbuster at the box office. Looks, Dance and The Skill! What else would the BOLLYWOOD ask for.

In no time is Madhuri the top class acting genius and has become NO 1 in the BOLLYWOOD proving her acting capabilities over and over again in all her films that though a movie in which she acted didn't do pretty well at the box office,

The film bombed and Madhuri's future in Bollywood did not seem too bright. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai wasn't detracted though. He always said that Madhuri had the potential to be the number one and maintained at that.

Ghai did not give up on the Maharashtrian beauty and re-introduced her in Ram Lakhan. The film succeeded in exposing Madhuri's beauty and people dubbed her as the reincarnation of Madhubala.

The film that cut the ice and established Madhuri in the big league was N Chandra's Tezaab. The film was a huge success and the Saroj Khan-choreographed 'Ek do teen' entered the hallmark of extremely popular dance numbers. The item with a liberal dose of jhatkas not only propelled Madhuri towards stardom, it also established Saroj Khan as a hot dance director.

After Tezaab, producers and directors waited for months to let Madhuri's dates coincide with Saroj's. Meanwhile, Subhash Ghai was still carving out a strategy to present Madhuri as the successor to the then reigning queen Sridevi. Khalnayak fulfilled his dream. Madhuri became the next super girl with 'Choli ke peeche'

.

Madhuri still reins but marriage has made changes in her list of priorities. She has cut down on her assignments and spends more time with her medico husband based in Los Angeles.
