Music Director Pritam.!!
Gangster Is My Kind Of Music:Pritam Courtesy: IndiaFM Friday, April 28, 2006 Subscribe to Newsletter
In the current scene where musician duo in Bollywood are breaking up, Pritam who parted ways with partner Jeet some years back is going great guns independently. Dhoom put him on the top spot. Then came Chocolate, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, Garam Masala and Fight Club. Currently he is ruling the charts with Gangster and Ankahee.
Pritam shares his long journey to success with IndiaFM.
Gangster's music is running successfully all over. How does it feel? Yes. I have worked very hard on Gangster and the music is doing well. It's good news for me. I personally like the album very much. This is my kind of music. Dhoom was a big hit and I was asked to make songs like Dhooom Machale. Yet, I feel that Gangster is my kind of music.
How was it working in the Bhatt camp? They are very nice people and are very passionate about their music. It's a lot of fun to work with them. They appreciate your work. The best part is that everybody participates. Just like African music in which everyone participates. It's quite a friendly atmosphere out there. Mukesh Bhatt is also so passionate about music. Tu Hi meri Shab was dubbed five times. K K dubbed it once and then a Pakistani singer called Nazam who was here for Kalyug also dubbed for the same. We tried everything till we got it right. Bheegi Bheegi was dubbed by four people. And Ya Ali was dubbed by five to six people. We need a producer to support this as it costs money. This is the level of involvement in this company. Vishesh Films is like that. Everybody participates in everything.
There must be pressure on you since Emraan has always had hit music in his films. I never thought of it that way. I like Emraan as a person. When I started recording for Gangster, Aashiq Banaya Aapne had already released. That time the potential of Emraan as a musical star wasn't established. Now things are different. Luckily all his music works.
How did you discover James? There's no connection between James and this song. Bheegi Bheegi is a Bengali song, composed by a band called Mohinir with Gautam Banerjee in the lead. I used to play the Bengali version of Bheegi Bheegi. Anurag was toying with the idea of having a song like this. We decided if we want the same kind of song, then why not this song itself. I wanted to take pride in remaking this. I have worked the hardest on this song because I knew I was representing all my friends who used to be a part of the band. It's a cult Bengali song. So I had to work too hard on it. Today, if you find the song of an international level, then it's because of the fact that a lot of hard work has gone into it. Anurag and Maheshji heard James and called him. Though he was untraceable, we managed to contact him. He came here and got lost. He was not sure whether he will perform it or not! We gave him alcohol! Then it was a one take thing! The real James came out! He doesn't even know one word of Hindi. When Mr. Bhatt heard the song, he complimented him as the future voice of Bollywood. He is very fond of James. Bhatt has identified many talents but his reaction to James was something great.
You have shared screen space with James in the video. Tell us something about that. I had no plans of doing the video. Anurag who is a very close friend of mine, thought of it. He is a very good director. If you see Gangster you will find it an epic love story. I trust him as a friend and can do anything for him. He literally coaxed me into doing the video. Now, I feel I shouldn't have done it. But at that point of time I enjoyed it because I have been associated with this song from a long time. It took me back to my college days and I thoroughly enjoyed the process. But I still feel that this is not my video but purely James's video I am there because of Anurag.
Are you planning any more videos after this? No more videos for me! I want to go back and play in the rock band and do live shows. May be it doesn't have much money, but the fun of being in a band on stage is different. It's a different high altogether. Interacting with the audiences is a complete high. I will not enjoy doing Bollywood shows completely. I'd rather have my own band. I feel that I am a terrible singer and actor as well so I'll never be in a video again.
What would you prefer - composing music for Bollywood or performing live with a band? Composing music obviously, but being on stage is a high. Again, if you do it all the time, then the excitement doesn't stay for long. I would like to have an equal balance between both.
Tell us about Ankahee. Ankahee's songs are very close to my heart. Vikram and Ronita called me and asked for romantic songs. Anu Malik was doing the music earlier, and it got shelved. Vikram confirmed that it's a new project. Otherwise I don't like stepping in anyone's work. It's not good for either of us. But it's a new concept with a new star cast. Though the storyline is the same, it doesn't mean it's the same project. I still get compliments for the movie. Melodically I think Ankahee is my best work till date.
Would you like to be a guest composer for any film? I don't mind guest composing for a film as long as its clear with the other music directors. Though I get many offers, I avoid doing one song for a film. Logically, I didn't want to do that. If I do it henceforth, it will be in complete harmony. If there are three or four music directors, then doing one song is no problem. But I would not like to step into someone else' shoes. I am a very open minded person. Being a music director does not only require making tunes. They should be termed as music supervisors. If my producer wants me to do any specific song inspired from somewhere, then I would like to take its copyright and then do it. Our laws are not so strong and we don't know the whole process. It has started now and we managed to take copyrights for Bheegi Bheegi from Ali Zafar. I was not a part of the Aadat controversy. Mukeshji did the same song with copyrights. If the song is too good and it needs to be in same version, then mention the original composer with copyrights and create your version. I have done that for Bheegi Bheegi. If you hear the Bengali version, you will realize that my song is quite different. I didn't want to touch the structure at all.
Tell us about Dhoom2. Dhoom 2 is bigger than Dhoom but I can't reveal anything about it. I am under a secrecy clause. A lot of times, I have been misquoted on Dhoom2 and I don't want that again. Yash Raj Films is very secretive about their projects. With the cast of Aishwarya, Hrithik, Abhishek, Bipasha, Uday and Rimi, it's definitely going to be bigger than Dhoom. The pressure is too much on me. But I think if Dhoom and Dhoom2 would have released at the same time, there would be no baggage of a hit on me and Dhoom2 would have been better.
You have worked with the Bhatts and the Chopras. How different are they in their style of working? Vishesh films and Yash Raj are completely different in their working style. In Yash Raj, Adi is a genius. I haven't seen anybody like him. He talks very less but whatever he says means a lot. It's too much of a pleasure to work with Adi. I look up to Adi for his judgment of every little part of filmmaking. I was protesting against Dhoom Machle but he liked it and now when I look back I feel that he was right. His judgments just never go wrong. It's very difficult to compare these two.
Tell us something about your forthcoming films. PNC's Pyar Ke Side Effects, Sachin Bajaj's Naksha, Subhash Ghai's Apna Sapna Money Money Money, Priyadarshan's Bhagam Bhag, Meghana Gulzar's next and Dhoom2 are my movies releasing this year.
From among your contemporaries, who is your favorite music director? It's very difficult to mention only one. Everyone comes up with good music. I love Shankar Ehsaan Loy. I am a big fan of A R Rehman, Vishal Shekhar, Salim- Sulaiman and Anand Raj Anand. I think Aryan is fabulous. Himesh is also doing well. They are more than composers and that's the reason I like their songs. But I don't think anybody has achieved R D Burman's style. Everyone had their own style in those days. The reason was that they had the same set of musicians playing for them. But now all films' music is so similar. All sound the same except for Himesh's because of his voice. It's difficult to make out the style of every music director because sometimes they are so similar.
Do you think any of them maintain consistency? I think everybody is talented. Every music director has a capacity. Otherwise they would not be here. If you get a good director with a good musical sense, he will bring out the best in you. The second is marketing. If you have a very good song it has to be marketed well. Songs have to gel with the screenplay. We are not here to make our own albums. My style keeps on changing every time. I compose according to the film.
Which is the most unusual or rare musical instrument that you have used in your compositions? It's an old Turkish flute called a Dudukh. It sounds like a saxophone and a flute. I have used it in Dhoom2.
Which music directors from the past have inspired you a lot? I am a fan of R D Burman, Ilaya Raja, Madan Mohan, Jaidev, Khayyam, and O P Nayyar. It's difficult to take one name. When I was in college, I absolutely loved R.D.Burman.
Are there any international stars you would like to work with? Given a choice, I would love to work with Shakira, Ricky Martin, Beyonce, Robbie Williams and Jennifer Lopez.

Music Director Pritam.!!
| "Mithoon is a phenomenal composer" - Pritam | Document.write('Joginder Tuteja, ') IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, February 20, 2007] |
|
| | In an industry where it is rare for one artist to be saying great things about another, it comes as a pleasant surprise to see hot-n-happening Pritam singing praises about new entrant Mithoon who has just got an award for the BEST DEBUTANT COMPOSER (2006) for his score of Bas EK PAL. Currently humming the songs of ANWAR, Pritam said, "I am hooked on to 'Maula Mere' for weeks now. Mithoon has created such great music that comes with an intense spiritual appeal. Just a couple of films old and what range! Look at 'Tere Bin' and 'Maula Mere'. They are simply superb. Mithoon is indeed a phenomenal singer and would go a long way." From Pritam who has himself come a long way since the days of 'Tere Liye', debut film of Sanjay 'Dhoom' Gadhvi, this is quite a compliment to cherish for Mithoon. |

Re: Gangster Is My Kind Of Music:Pritam
Starring: Shiney Ahuja, Emraan Hashmi and Kangna Director: Anurag Basu Music: Pritam Producer: Mukesh Bhatt
"Gangster" is not really a film about homicidal crime. Nor is it a film that dwells stylishly on the glossy exteriors of the high life. It focuses on the stark interiors of hearts that ruthlessly seek love in relentlessly self-serving places. Never shy of exposing the inner-most contours of a lacerated heart and soul, writer Mahesh Bhatt gives us a love triangle between a girl on the brink Simran (Kangna), her gangster-lover (Shiney Ahuja) and the man (Emraan Hashmi) who comes into her life to put balm on her frayed nerves. Simran [Kangana] is an alcoholic, heading towards doom. The only person who comforts her when she's feeling low in far-away Seoul [South Korea] is Aakash [Emraan Hashmi], a singer in an Indian restaurant. Their relationship gradually changes from friendship to love. And one night, Aakash learns of Simran's past and the prime reason for her loneliness. From a bar dancer in Mumbai to a lonely, pointless existence in Seoul, Simran's journey is full of thorns. She is the girlfriend of the dreaded gangster Daya [Shiny Ahuja], a man on the run. He is in Mauritius, then Dubai, later Seoul. He has no place he can call his own. When Daya learns of Simran's relationship with Aakash, he promises to mend ways and fulfill her dreams of a normal life. But there are complications. Simran discovers that she is pregnant; she is carrying Aakash's baby. She is now torn between the two men in her life. She has to make a choice! The first number itself is a superbly composed love ballad, "Tu Hi Meri Shab Hai", which appears thrice in the album and since it's fantastic, no one is complaining! K.K. is simply amazing. His trademark high-pitched vocals are brilliant. The intermittent use of the chorus makes the track soar to dizzying heights. Sayeed Quadri's lyrics (like Pritam's music and K.K.'s singing), are superlative - "Tu hi meri shab hai, subah hai, tu hi din hai mera, tu hi mera rab hai, jahaan hai, tu hi meri duniya." Hats off to the team's effort! Kangana is a remarkable find, the actress coming across with great conviction. Shiney Ahuja is potentially one of the finest young actors we have out there, and this film too sees him seethe and simmer, soften and sizzle -- mostly without words. Emraan character is an understated one, and Hashmi manages to keep it that way. There is no unnecessary bluster or melodrama, and he does a pretty believable job. Pritam's music is another highpoint. The songs have a different sound and the placement of each track in the narrative make you cherish them all the more. 'Tuhi Meri Shab Hai Subah Hai' and 'Bheegi Bheegi' are the best tracks. Even the song in the second half, 'Ya Ali', has a strong story running simultaneously. Cinematography [Bobby Singh] is consistent. The locales of Seoul give the film that extra zing. On the whole, Gangster is a solid film, and deserves both appreciation and applause.. |

Assam campaigns for Filmfare nominee Zubeen.!! | Guwahati, Feb 22 (IANS) Cities and villages in Assam are painted red with posters and billboards seeking votes for singing sensation Zubeen Garg of 'Ya Ali' ('Gangster') fame who has been nominated for the prestigious Filmfare Awards in the best playback singer category. Across the length and breadth of Assam, hoardings and posters with Zubeen's photograph have sprung up with his fan club going all out to seek votes through e-mail to help the local singing icon win the best Filmfare playback singer award to be announced Sunday in Mumbai. 'We have been mobilising support for Zubeen through various means like street corner meetings, poster campaigns, besides playing his songs in crowded areas with an appeal asking people to vote him through e-mail,' said Arnab Sharma, a young Zubeen fan in Guwahati. The classically trained singer shot into the limelight with the song of the year 'Ya Ali' that catapulted him to the big league of Bollywood playback singing. Last week, Zubeen won the Kenstar Setmax Stardust film awards as the best playback singer outshining other stars like Himesh Reshammiya. Voting through internet for the 52nd Fair One Filmfare Awards 2006 for the best playback singer (male) is open till midnight Saturday with the other nominees being Himesh, Sonu Nigam, Shaan and Kailesh Khar, and Atif Aslam. 'I am hoping for the best,' Zubeen said over the phone from Mumbai. People in Assam are a little peeved with the awards being decided through internet voting and not SMS. 'It would have been easier for us to SMS our vote instead of internet as not too many people have access to computers in villages. Zubeen for us is a craze, a phenomenon here,' said Anushmita Bora, a college student. |

Re: Music Dirctor Pritam.!!
Pritam Chakraborty (Bengali: প্রীতম চক্রবর্তী), generally known simply as Pritam (Bengali: প্রীতম), is a Bollywood music director and composr. Biography Born to a Bengali family in Kolkata, Pritam is the son of Prabodh Chakraborty, who runs a music school for children. Pritam gained his early training in music from his father, and learned to play the guitar while still in school.
EducationAfter completing his schooling from St. James' School and college education from Presidency College, Pritam joined Bangla rock band, Chandrabindu. He left the band in 1997 to undertake a course in sound engineering at the Film and Television Institute in Pune. During this time, he was offered a chance to compose background music for a film by Hungarian filmmaker Isteran Gaal. He also learnt African music from musicologist Kedar Avati.
Career as Composer
With JeetHaving completed his education, Pritam moved to Mumbai to pursue a career in Bollywood. During his stay in Mumbai, he began composing ad jingles, and became friendly with a number of other young men struggling to make it big, like Shantanu Moitra, Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Gadhvi and Chandrajeet Ganguly, also known as Jeet, who played the guitar with Anup Jalota. Pritam got his first break when Gadhvi was signed on to direct Tere Liye and he, in turn, signed on his friends Jeet and Pritam as music composers. Though the music was well received, the film sank at the box office. However, in 2002 Yashraj signed Gadhvi up to direct Mere Yaar ki Shaadi Hai for which the Jeet-Pritam duo once again composed the music. All the songs from that movie were chartbusters, and the duo had hit the big time.
Solo CareerJeet and Pritam worked together for only one more film which was Mudda-The Issue, before amicably parting. After the separation, Pritam's career as a solo musician stalled as he signed a series of flops like Fun2shh - Dudes In The 10th Century and Agnipankh. The films sank at the box office and with them, Pritam’s music too. However, in 2004, Pritam composed the music for Sanjay Gadhvi's second film, Dhoom, which was a runaway success. The film did well and the music topped the charts. The song Dhoom Machale, sung in Hindi by Sunidhi Chauhan and in English by Tata Young, was a huge hit, and won him the MTV Award for Best Composer. Pritam followed up the success of Dhoom with a string of chartbusting numbers after a year for Chocolate, Garam Masala and Gangster. Most recently he composed the music for Dhoom 2, the sequel to Dhoom.

PlagiarismPritam's music is catchy and is very popular with younger listeners. However, he has often been criticised for plagiarism. Pritam counters that he is simply "inspired" by various musical sources and cites his sources whenever appropriate. A partial list is provided below:

Re: Music Dirctor Pritam.!!
Pritam gaan milo Indranil Roy November, 2005 The Dhoom music director on the highs and lows of musical notes Going by the market buzz, you seem to be the hottest music director today. I don’t know if I’m the hottest but I’m surely one of the most popular. Now that Garam Masala is a hit, I’m being called a bankable music director.
But after Dhoom, weren’t you under severe pressure to come up with similar soundtracks?
Even two years after Dhoom I meet producers who expect me to repeat the Dhoom sound. That’s frustrating and flattering. The title song was a hit because of the film’s packaging. I’m sure it wouldn’t have been a big hit if it was in a non-descript film.
Even after giving them a huge hit, you’re still not part of the Yashraj camp?
In Yashraj, directors work with their own teams. If they’re making Dhoom 2 they call me. If some day, they make a sequel to Hum Tum, I’m sure Jatin-Lalit will do that project. Yashraj works like a factory, everyone’s role is defined. I’ve no complaints.
Critics often remark that you’ve a major Viju Shah hangover?
I’ve heard that too but that’s not true. The perception must have found credence because I use a fusion of bhangra, Arabic and western groove like Viju does. But there’s no inspiration if any sort.
You were ignored at all the major award functions.
..And I’m still very upset about that. I thought I’d done enough to deserve at least one big award. Though I’m happy for my friend, Kunal Ganjawala, who won the most promising musician award at a major award function. That was one award I desperately wanted to win. I thought I was worthy enough.
You are also charged with having plagiarised two songs from the Pakistani band Jal in the Chocolate soundtrack? I would like to make it very clear that I have not composed the songs. Panahon mein and Zahreeli raatein were already recorded when I stepped in to compose the other songs of Chocolate. I got to know of them when I was mixing and mastering my songs. This question should be answered by the producer.
Earlier, you were a part of the Jeet-Pritam team. Why did you split?
Jeet wanted to work on his own, it was his decision to split. After Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, he felt he had it in him to carry a film on his shoulder. Contrary to rumours, it was a mutual decision, there was no ugly quarrel. It’s much easier working as a team.
Can you co-exist with other composers in the politics driven world of film music?
(Laughs) In spite of all the politics in the music business you can co-exist if you know your job. I know of a senior ‘copy cat’ music director who badmouths me continuously during his music sessions.
But when we meet socially, he’s cordial. And I laugh to myself. If hypocrisy is inevitable you might as well lie back and enjoy it.
How do you feel when music directors copy your style? It’s flattering no doubt. Everyone felt Salim-Sulaiman’s compositions for Kaal had a huge Dhoom hangover. That made me feel good.
Tell us a little about your background? I come from a middle class Kolkata family. I completed my MSc from Presidency College, then joined FTII, Pune to do sound engineering. I used to lie to my parents that I was doing engineering and it was only in the third year that they discovered the truth.
Though my parents were initially apprehensive, they’re now very happy with my success.
Lastly, are you trapped into repeating your grooves? Yes I am. I’m trapped into doing similar ‘disco’ kind of compositions. I’m fed up with that. I would like to compose soothing romantic numbers. I want to have a soundtrack like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in my kitty. Actually, soft numbers are my forte.

Re: Music Dirctor Pritam.!!
Monday March 5Kay Kay Menon
Joginder Tuteja, Bollywood Trade News Network Barely 5 minutes into a conversation with Kay Kay Menon and you realize that he is not a typical filmi sorts that you speak and meet on a regular basis. With intelligent vibes generated by the actor, you know that here is one actor who is just waiting to burst into the film world in a big way, provided the makers who matter realize the immense potential that the man possesses. He speaks to Joginder Tuteja about life post 'Black Friday' and HTPL and how he is not really desperate to see his 'Paanch' seeing the light of the day. Q. Your natural act as a middle class Bengali character Partho in 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd' has come for much appreciation. Was there a reference point somewhere that made the character appear so believable? A. Not really. Even for this role I went ahead in my normal mode. It wasn't as if I had gone out to some research. For me the script is what guides me while the director's inputs are most important. From hereon I come up with my own interpretation but that too within the parameters of what the script and director have to offer. Q. So in HTPL was it the script that drove you most? A. Exactly. Once you follow the script and have an exciting role cut out of you, you end up doing something unique. Also, since no two people are same, something similar holds good for the characters as well who are bound to be different. Q. Something like that holds good for you too since one saw you in different light first in 'Black Friday' and now in HTPL. A. And for that I must repeat that I am absolutely proud of my audience, especially when I look at the response 'Black Friday' has generated. Audience has palled up the film with open arms and an open heart. This has gone on to prove that both Indian audience as well as Indian cinema has come of age while the level of film making too has changed. Q. You sound really happy... A. Yes, I am. See, 'Black Friday' released two years late and anything could have happened due to a delayed release. For someone like me who is an actor, the delay may not hamper much but the same cannot be said about the writer/director Anurag Kashyap since he was waiting for his film to hit the marquee. I felt bad that the film was stuck but thankfully everything is good now. It is good to see that the film has been received well with the audience maturing up too. Q. Doesn't this make you believe in the corner of your heart that 'Paanch' too may eventually see the light of the day? A. [Laughs] Of course I would want to see the film releasing at theatres before I die. We all would before we all die! Every film is made for an audience to watch it; that's the natural cycle for any film. Once this cycle is complete it is up to the audience to either accept or reject it, but the least is that the film should be seen. Having said that the producer unfortunately doesn't have the guts or the mettle to bring the film up for release. The film is ready and has been cleared by Censors for ages. Still it's a pity not to see the film being released. Q. That sounds quite disappointing.. A. Yes, we all are disappointed since everyone from the cast and crew worked so hard on the film. It is the only genuine noir genre film and even though many other films claim to be so, they actually do not belong to the genre in entirety. But anyways, let's leave it. None of us are pining any hopes on the film anymore. If it releases, then it will be great for us and the audience but that's about it! More on bollywood at glamsham.com

Re: Music Dirctor Pritam.!!
Pritam excited about Metro music

Music director Pritam has completely gone agog with the success of his latest compositions for the film Metro. With positive reviews from all over the country, no reason why one should hide their excitement. "The music of Metro is the top seller at music store in the last three days. This is the first time this is happening to me", says he.
Seems like Pritam has given his heart and soul out to the music of the film. "In college I used to be doing this kind of music and this is what I actually enjoy."
From Raga to Rock
By now it is common knowledge that Pritam had formed a Rock band for the music of the film. "It was necessary that the whole sound track of the film be completely Rock as there is a Rock band in it. Initially I was very skeptical in terms of how we could pull this off as Rock is a new sound in Bollywood. If it was just a band album, it would have been simpler. All you have to do is form a band and make the music. However, a film almum is going to compete with other film albums. So making a band and keeping the flavour of the film was challenging", he went onto say.
"Hot funk, cold punk, even if its old junk, it's still rock and roll to me." - Billy Joel
Is it you regular Band baaja? We think not. "Anurag told me to be a part of the band and James came in as well. Then I started auditioning for the band. Sohail and Soham who had sung with me earlier were roped in. This band was formed only for the film but after we shot a video, I felt that we should take this band forward. So we are going to cut another album which will be independent of Metro. The reason for this is because we can create good sound with the members and with my music capabilities. Milatri is also part of the band and is a great guitar player. His sound is an integral part of Metro and will continue with the band. Eric Pillai does the mixing completely."
"Rock and Roll: Music for the neck downwards." - Keith Richards, Rolling Stones.
The whole idea of In Dino Dil Mera has come from Anurag. In Dino Dil Mera is the fastest song I have ever made in my life. Kar Salaam has also got a very funny story around it. It was based on a Bodo tribe of Assam. They have a typical dance form called Bagarumba. We were discussing different dance forms of India and my Assamese assistant was showing me how they do their typical Assamese dance. The melody he was humming with it sounded pretty catchy. So I said let us make a rock version of it. So Kar Salaam is the rock version of thousands of years old Bodo folk song.
Composing for Kareena for Kya Love Story Hai.
"Director Lovely Singh has done excellent work in making the video. I think it is going to rock the nation."
On a parting note: Mixing Music and marriage.
"I'm working like a mad person. My wife will leave me soon because she is already getting upset that I return home at four in the morning."

Re: Music Dirctor Pritam.!!
Pritam and his band in Metro
![[]](http://entertainment.oneindia.in/img/trans.gif)
Courtesy: IndiaFM May 09, 2007 One aspect of Metro that everyone will take note of is the way in which music is placed in the film. By now its common knowledge that music director Pritam has made a band for the film and given rocking music. What's interesting is that Pritam along with two members of his band, James and Sohail, makes appearance in the songs of the film. And not just in one or two songs, but in all six tracks of the film.
Metro, as such, is a film which has no scope for music. But director Anurag Basu has very tactfully seeped in songs into his screenplay, without any song looking forced. That's primarily because none of the songs are lip-synced by any characters in the film and are just used as transition tracks. And more interestingly every time a song plays onscreen, the trio of Pritam, James and Sohail turn up on screen singing the songs in the backdrop of the actual scene.
The director says that the basic idea of using the band in film was inspired by the long forgotten forlorn folk music coming from the theatre background. "Similar to Bhavari and Banwani form of drama where singers are used as sutradhaar's to narrate the story and take it further, I have moulded the concept to contemporary scenario and fitted into my screenplay," explains Anurag Basu.
While music video for a film are a common phenomena in Bollywood off late with almost every film playing a promotional track in the opening or end credits, what sets Metro apart is the fact that the songs don't come across as separately shot videos but are integral portions in the film. One does wonder if Pritam and band actually shot for the songs while the making of the film or their portions were separately shot and edited into the film. Anurag clarifies our doubt "It was from the nascent stages of drafting Metro that I had planned to plot Pritam and band. They were actually present during the shoot of the movie and we filmed them simultaneously when the film was shot. In fact during the shoot Pritam was completely harrowed considering the weird and funny spots I have placed him in."
Didn't he meet with opposition with such an unusual concept? "Oh, don't ask me that. When I told people about this concept, they could not understand or relate to the basic idea. Besides Ronnie, Pritam and my assistant who believed in me and agreed to go ahead with the idea, everyone else opposed. But finally I am glad it has worked for the film."
Shooting for Metro has also encouraged Pritam to take his band to the next level. The music director admits, "This band was formed only for the film but after we shot for the film, I felt that we should take this band forward. So we are going to cut another album which will be independent of Metro."
You can't resist asking Pritam about the inspiration behind his songs. The musiciandoesn't deny an answer this time around. "The whole idea of In Dino Dil Mera has come from Anurag. It's the fastest song I have ever made in my life. Kar Salaam has also got a very funny story around it. It was based on a Bodo tribe of Assam. They have a typical dance form called Bagarumba. So I said let us make a rock version of it. So Kar Salaam is the rock version of thousands of years old Bodo folk song".

| "Anurag didn't let me cut my hair" - Pritam | Document.write('Joginder Tuteja, ' ) IndiaGlitz Friday, May 11, 2007 |

| Would Pritam finally be having a hair cut now? That's a question that his fans and friends have been asking him ever since he adopted a rock Star persona by keeping long hair and a beard. Pritam has been carrying this look for time immemorial now and on being asked the question, he replied - "This was a look I was carrying for quite a few months before the BAND METRO happened. Since it was a rock band my look was suiting the image that we wanted to give to the band so I stuck to it." He laughs, "Now even when I am done with creating the music and being a part of the music videos, Anurag (Basu), film's director, has given me strict instructions not to cut my hair and shave my beard till he gives a green signal. He wants the look to remain till the release of LIFE IN A..METRO and God knows for how long more!" |
