Now Bollywood composers are singing for each other: Vishal

Music directors in Bollywood are experimenting with new voices these days, but a new trend catching up is composers singing in one another's films, says Vishal Dadlani of music composer duo Vishal and Shekhar.

"Music directors in Bollywood are singing for each other a lot which is a beautiful thing. Shekhar (Ravjiani) just sang for Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. In the past, I have sung for Pritam (Chakraborty), Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Rakesh Roshan. So we are trading songs back and forth," Vishal told IANS in an interview here.

"It's really entertaining because it adds a whole new dimension to the song. Especially when a music director comes in to sing a song for you. For example, when Shankar (Mahadevan) sang 'Desi girl' in 'Dostana' for us, he took the song to a new level," he added.

The composer-singer recently lent his voice to the track of "Kaminay" for Vishal Bharadwaj and also for "Nazaara hai" in the film "8x10 Tasveer" for Salim-Sulaiman.

Vishal, who along with his partner Shekhar hit the bull's eye with "Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi" in 1999, managed a hit in his first film itself with the popular song "Musu musu".

The duo later went on to create chartbusters in films like "Jhankaar Beats", "Om Shanti Om", "Salaam Namaste", "Tashan", "Bachna Ae Haseeno" and "Dostana" among others.

Calling their journey in Bollywood a smooth drive, Vishal said: "Sometimes things just happen for you. A door opens and you walk through it and providence assures that it all happens for you. 'Musu musu' was the first commercial song I had ever recorded and it went straight to number one."

Vishal, who is also the vocalist of Mumbai-based electronic band Pentagram, has always worked to bring fresh talent in the forefront and he maintains that many other composers are also working towards the same.

"From Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to Pritam and A.R. Rahman, we all as far as possible are trying to nurture and groom new talent. It's a movement that has been going on for the last two-three years. Nothing is going to remove or replace the established singers because they are truly talented, but it's beautiful the way a new voice can refresh a song," said Vishal.

The composer, who has also penned down lyrics for the song "Kuch Kum" in "Dostana", has worked with industry biggies like Yash Chopra, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan. Associations with such films offer brighter future prospects, but is there enough creative freedom while working on such projects?

"Creative freedom is not a problem even when it comes to films for big producers. It's just that you as a composer should make sure that you can accentuate the emotions of the film musically.

"If you are working on a fun film, you don't set out to try to prove how much classical music you know. You try to make music that is young with an element of fun that works for the film and also keeps the director's vision which is most important," the composer explained.

Vishal-Shekhar is touted as one of the best in the business now and the duo has its hands full at the moment. Its first release of the year will be Amitabh Bachchan-starrer "Aladdin" in June. It is also working on various untitled films for Tarun Mansukhani, Siddharth Anand, Ravi Chopra, Tips and T-Series respectively.

Besides, the duo is judging a children's musical reality show "Amul Voice of India - Mummy Ke Superstars" on Star Plus.

Vishal-Shekhar to visit LA to meet top producers

The composer duo is on the verge of closing deals with major record producers in the US We are currently in various stages of negotiation with a big US hip-hop music producer.

After A R Rahman hit pay dirt with Slumdog Millionaire and then got Kylie Minogue to sing for him in Blue, the Indian music industry has been abuzz with talks of international collaborations.

But even as composers like Adnan Sami collaborate with Jermaine Jackson and ShankarEhsaan-Loy work with a Timbaland associate, the prolific music composer duo, Vishal-Shekhar, has been oddly silent, with no news about going international from their quarter. But from what Vishal Dadlani has to say, it is likely that the duo is on the verge of closing major deals with producers in the US.

Growing market "We have been having talks for over an year now and are currently in various stages of negotiation with a big hip-hop music producer in the US, as well as one of the world's leading r `n' b divas," says Dadlani.
"We have never spoken about any of this so far, because we haven't yet signed on contracts yet. We don't believe in making noise unless we can back it up."

Dadlani goes on to reveal that the duo has been to Los Angeles earlier this year, where they had several meetings with A-list artistes and producers, and are heading to the US again next week to possibly close a couple of deals. "A R Rahman has opened the way for Indian musicians," says Dadlani. "Western artistes look at musicians from India with great respect now and treat us as equals.

In every conversation that we've had with labels in the US, we've found that they want to tap our industry as much as we do theirs." The composers, who have had only one release this year with Aladin, have been careful about choosing the right international projects and have even turned down offers to compose for a couple of disapora films. "We are very clear about one thing," Dadlani spells out, "We will not work on an international project unless we receive equal billing on it. We want to collaborate as artistes, and not as producers we would ideally like to bounce around in concerts with an artiste we end up working with. Till then, we are happy being big fish in a small pond" Even as things materialize on the international front with Vishal-Shekhar, the duo is happy working on its upcoming projects Dharma Productions' I Hate Love Stories, Siddharth Anand's Anjaana Anjaani and UTV's Arjun. But Dadlani particularly also seems to be enjoying his newfound innings as a playback singer.

The composer, who also doubles up as the lead vocalist for rock band Pentagram, has sung for Vishal Bharadwaj in Kaminey (`Dhan te nan'), Pritam in Dhoom 2(`Dhoom again'), Rajesh Roshan in Krazzy 4 (Title track), (Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy in various projects (including `Barson re' in London Dreams) and is now burning the airwaves with Salim-Sulaiman's new release, Kurbaan, where he has sung the angsty-rock title track. Then, there are the ten-odd tracks he has sung for his own albums.

No illusions Dadlani plays down his playback singing assignment, saying he just "happens to have" a unique voice and attitude, and he is singing only because he's friends with most of the composers. "I have no illusions about my voice as a playback singer," he laughs. "I'm a bad playback singer and everyone I work with knows that. I'm probably the flavour of the month, but the fact is that I'll never overshadow singers like Sonu (Niigaam), Shaan and K K."

Even so, the composer admits that singing for other composers helps him learn his craft better.
"When I work with a composer like Shankar Mahadevan, who is one of the best singers in India, I learn a thing or two about singing," Dadlani says.

But, of course, point out to him that he is the vocalist of one of India's biggest rock bands, and he instantly quips, "I was just talking about playback singing. When I perform with Pentagram, I'm the best f**king singer in the world!"

IIT students lash out at Vishal-Shekhar

Vishal Dadlani tweets about `PR mismanagement' at Mood Indigo as the reason for cancelling their concert at IIT, students allege the duo is being untruthful and dishonest `The duo's manager said that he's keep ing half the student's money as a cancel lation fee'

On December 20, four days before VishalShekhar were confirmed to play at Mood Indigo, IIT Mumbai's national level festival, Vishal Dadlani tweeted, "The status of the IIT show is not final yet.

We may not play at all. They messed up the PR, and we have certain rules" on his twitter account, V1SH4L.

The next day, Dadlani again tweeted, "We're not doing Mood I. They messed up on the PR." On the following day, Dadlani confirmed that the duo has pulled out, citing "poor management" as the reason.

Dadlani's version When asked what went wrong, Dadlani said, "When we were asked to play the concert, my first tweet was, "It's like going back home" since I have played on the Mood Indigo stage so many times."

"But Shekhar and I do more concerts than any music director and we have specific PR instructions that go out before a show," he continued. "These guys were not able to meet them and they mismanaged the PR, and they couldn't correct it. So we pulled out."

After the duo pulled out, the students roped in ShankarEhsaan-Loy at the last minute, and the concert, scheduled for December 24, went off smoothly. But the IIT students and faculty aren't pleased with Dadlani's comments.

When contacted, Professor P Gopalan, Dean of Students Affairs at IIT Mumbai, said, "They had a set of expectations which were beyond our control, and were not a part of our MoU with them. They told us about them two days ago, and said they'd pull out of the concert if they were not met."

IIT speaks out He added, "But I'd rather be happy that we got someone as big as Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy to play for us. They were more than gracious to come at the last moment. Thanks to their timely help, they are always welcome at Mood Indigo every year from now on."

The IIT students were more forthright with their comments, when contacted. They insisted that it had nothing to do with the PR, and provided us with records of the PR activities involving the duo.

Ishank Gupta, Overall Coordinator of Mood Indigo revealed, "We had six hoardings, 4 ads on buses, presence in Baristas and McDonalds outlets across the city, presence on more than a 1000 out of home media screens, radio coverage for 10 days and posters in 3500 colleges across the country, involving VishalShekhar exclusively. I don't understand how they could still complain about the PR.

Maybe they don't know the meaning of the term."

Gupta, who has led the team of students at IIT to put up the country's biggest college festival, said that the duo's manager wanted another full page article in newspapers after the entire publicity campaign, two days before the festival, and pulled out when that didn't happen. "I was in touch with their manager, Abhishek," Gupta said. "In spite of the publicity, he still wanted an article.

When we explained to him that we don't own city newspapers, he said that he was keeping half our money as a cancellation fee."

"I think Vishal-Shekhar are unlucky to have the worst manager ever, who tries to manipulate students into giving them money. In fact, we could introduce this as a busi ness idea in the next festival - to tie up with people for a con cert and cancel it at the last minute, keeping half their fee," Gupta added sarcastically.

Students angry The students also alleged that the entire incident seemed like an excuse and that Vishal Shekhar may have had anoth er concert, where they were getting more money. "The manager eventually returned the money but said he was doing a favour by doing so. I find it hard to believe that such wellknown artistes like Vishal-Shekhar would be so dishonest and untruthful in their dealings with students."

"I'm just glad they didn't cancel on the day of the con cert. More than anything else, I'm very thankful to Shankar Ehsaan-Loy for agreeing to a concert with just two days notice. In a sense, we are lucky that Vishal-Shekhar left us in a lurch, since we could get better artistes instead."

Vishal's judging it right!

Vishal Dadlani
Vishal Dadlani
Vishal Dadlani, who was in town recently for a performance of Pentagram, talks to TOI about his musical preferences in the city and the recent composers, whose music he loves

What is the best and the worst part of performing in Kolkata?
The worst part is that all flights to Kolkata are really really early in the morning. We have to sacrifice our sleep in order to catch them. The best part is of course, the crowd and the mind boggling response that we get each time we play in the city. The same thing happened this time too. So we are very happy to be here each time.

What is the music scene like in Kolkata?
The music scene is pretty cool out here. There is whole bunch of Kolkata bands, whose music I admire, like Skinny Alley, Pink Noise, The Supersonics and Prachir. The urban music scene is also pretty strong in the city. Musically, this city has always been much ahead of others. It has been the breeding ground of some of the greatest musical talents that India has produced so far. Our National anthem too is from this place. Look at RD Burman, Kishore Kumar and even Shreya Ghoshal...they are all Bengalis! I wouldn't have been a composer if not for RD. He is a true legend. KKR still remains our (mine and Shekhar's) favourite team, no matter what. After composing the theme song, Korbo Lorbo Jitbo, for KKR many other teams approached us for their theme songs as well, but we said no to them, as we are both very loyal to KKR.

A composer, a singer, a VJ or a member of Pentagram — What do you prefer being most?
Though there are many sites like Wikipedia, which says that I was a VJ, I want to clear this once and for all. I was never a VJ. I used to host a programme on rock music for a music channel. That's it. Don't believe anything and everything that's available on the Net. It isn't always true. Now coming back to the question, I enjoy doing all three that is composing, singing and being a member of Pentagram. The ultimate aim is to create good music for the listeners and that is what I am striving for, everyday. Basically, it's all the same and I don't see them as different job responsibilities.

What about being a judge of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa?
I never consider myself a judge. My basic aim is to have some good time through good music and listening to some real good singing. This year's participants are phenomenal. You will get to see and hear some real talents this year.

Post I Hate Luv Storys, what are your forthcoming projects?
There's Anjaana Anjaani coming up. The promos are already on air. They are just a few days old, but we are getting huge response for the same. Then there is.

Recently, you tweeted about Amit Trivedi composing super scores for Aisha. Who are the other composers of recent times, whose music you really like?
There is a long list of names including, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Pritam, AR Rahman (he is a genius) and Amit Trivedi, whose music I admire.

Bollywood music composer Vishal Dadlani is defending Oscar winner A.R. Rahman against all negative comments for the latter's composition Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto, which is the official song for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

"The only infallible one is god, who sends music to us all. Everyone else is human, including Rahman. We're all allowed off days. Be nice. All you doubters, and haters, please understand that Rahman has done more for music and India's international image than almost anyone else," Dadlani of music director duo Vishal-Shekhar posted on Twitter.

Rahman, who is said to have charged over Rs.5 crore to compose the song, is receiving flak for lack of any catchy phrase a la Waka Waka.
Nevertheless, a lot of his fans are also supporting him.

Dadlani is looking forward to meeting Rahman on the sets of Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar.

"Today's guest on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa... is the man himself, Mr. A.R. Rahman. Oddly, I've never met him before! Can't wait," he posted.

While Dadlani is one of the judges on the show, Rahman will be a special guest in one of the upcoming episodes

They may be big names in the Bollywood music industry, but music director duo Vishal-Shekhar did not shy away from asking music maestro A.R. Rahman for his autograph.

They met Rahman on the sets of Zee TV's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar -- the music maestro came with actor John Abraham to promote their upcoming project Jhootha Hi Sahi.

Vishal was especially enthusiastic about his first meeting with the Oscar winner and urged Rahman for an autograph, said a source from the sets.

Vishal ShekharOn meeting Rahman, Vishal said: "Each decade in the Indian music industry has an identity - the melodious 60s, the swinging 70s, disco of the 80s and the 90s was a one man show - A.R. Rahman who pioneered a distinct phase in Indian film music combining western influences with Indian sounds, ranging from classical instruments to folk music."

Vishal even asked Rahman to sing the latter's version of Vande Mataram. But Rahman couldn't fulfill his wish.

"I will not be able to do justice to our national song today because it needs to be sung in a high pitch, and it will be difficult for me to summon that amount of energy on an empty stomach. It's the holy month of Ramzaan and I am fasting," Rahman said on the day of the shoot, Sep 7.

The special episode of the music reality show will be on air Friday.

Imogen Heap with Vishal Dadlani

When Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani, two popular Indian composers, got together with Grammy award-winning British singer-composer-producer Imogen Heap in the luxurious Samode Palace in Rajasthan, the only thing on their minds was to push the boundaries of music as they are familiar with, further. So the trio worked on a composition based on Rabindranath Tagore's Where The Mind is Without Fear, in which Heap introduced the audience to a variety of instruments, (some of which were played and recorded in a shop for musical instruments in Samode), and a group of schoolchildren sung the chorus. There were also distinct influences of a village band and local nagara players.

It was the kind of experimentation that Samira Kanwar, founder of Mumbai-based production house Babble Fish Productions, was hoping to achieve when she conceptualised the programme, The Dewarists, along with event management firm Only Much Louder and Dewar's. The series, a music documentary-meets-travelogue, was launched a fortnight back on Star World. It takes artists out of the studio, to destinations that form a fitting backdrop to the kind of music they produce, and gives them complete creative freedom and full rights to the music they create on the show.

Vishal-Shekhar make music with Imogen Heap

Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani got together with Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Imogen Heap to create a track called Minds Without Fear - for The Dewarists, a new original television series.

"The trio worked on a composition based on Rabindranath Tagore's Where The Mind is Without Fear, in which Heap introduced the audience to a variety of instruments, (some of which were played and recorded in a shop for musical instruments in Samode), and a group of schoolchildren sung the chorus. There were also distinct influences of a village band and local nagara players," reports Zaira Arslan of Indian Express.

The trio shot this video in the luxurious Samode Palace in Rajasthan. The music they created sounds fresh and transports you into that region in a refreshing manner.

The Facebook page of the concept reads: "The Dewarists is a movement that recognizes and celebrates those who have changed the rules of the game. We identify and promote those individuals who have followed their hearts and shifted the paradigm through their original approach. The Dewarists encourages individuals to do what they believe in, because some things are just worth doing."

Plot Outline, as stated on The Dewarists' Facebook page

The Dewarists, produced in a never-been-done-before music documentary-travelogue format, will see musicians from distinctly different musical backgrounds coming together to explore beautiful destinations across India. By the end of the journey, artists would have composed a track that will reflect not only each other’s genres and influences but it will also rope in the sounds and culture of the place they travel to. The Dewarists represents a melting pot of all the sounds simmering under the mainstream.
