 Nachiketa Chakrabarty
Pregnant time has its toll on my inner self. The self in me saturated with subtle sequences over the passage of time, having its footprints on my skin. Although I was born in an ambience of singing with my mother and elder sister crooning sweet nothings, the faculty of singing in me encountered a hostility of dimensional horizons. The self got dissected with pangs when I discovered an incompatible relationship with music and the turbulent times. So,my psyche’ was torn between traditional sleep-inducing Bengali songs and the percussionist protest of the youth on the other hand.
An urge to resurrect was developing that records the protests. Contradictions in my milieu left a deep impression that honed my skill to represent the exact expression of the generation next who did not feel at home with melodies that swayed the ears of the Bengalees of the previous generation. So my search to create a composition for the growing generation consolidated. No doubt, I felt a passionate feeling to make my composition based more on rhythms and beats.
So,the turbulent time has its toll on me.I tried to break the traditional lullaby type Bengali song composition with more colloquial hypes that preferred the lips of teenagers and invariably the metallic lyrics. However I did not forget a nugget of my search that Rabindrasangeet was played for a cocooned band of listeners and as such it did not reach the masses who had a different perception of troubadour(folk)lyrics. As it happened,I also sang Rabindrasangeet for a rickshaw puller or a fisherman in an isolated village.
My experiments with reality in realm of Bengali songs made me a little bohemian in nature. But suddenly,I had my dream come true when providence had it that a section of young college students invited me to sing for them with an offer of Rs 100 as remuneration. That ended my quest for a liberation of Bengali song from its melodious past and no wonder I became a singer with my own effort.

 Re: Nachiketa Chakrabarty
Honest music
Soon after Chandrabindoo act, Nachiketa Chakraborty, one of the most popular singers in Bengal, put in a very entertaining performance. Nachiketa, who is inspired by Lata Mangeshkar on the one hand and Che Guevara on the other, peppered his songs and speech on love, relationships and politics with a lot of humour. "In each of these entertainment is important, but there should also be commitment, seriousness and honesty in what you communicate. If you are honest about what you want to say, people will like it. They can see it in your eye," says Nachiketa of his style of performance.

Ekla Chalo
Nachiketa Chakraborty, Sonu Nigam
Ekla Chalo - I've never been a Sonu Nigam admirer. This one made me. Classy Vocals leading to a high pitch and you hear the quick run of piano keys as the pitch comes down. Though the tune seems very similar to a song which I couldn't identify the mix of bengali lines by Nachiketa Chakraborty made it to the top.

 Re: Nachiketa Chakrabarty
Closing ranks against calamity
SUDESHNA BANERJEE
Usha Uthup at the rehearsal for a video album on tsunami at choreographer Sukalyan Bhattacharya?s studio in Dhakuria on Friday. Picture by Aranya Sen
A guitar lies on the beach, caressed by the lapping waves. A familiar figure bends down to retrieve the instrument and walks into the horizon. A familiar voice recites: ...From the grief and tears and pain/ Will rise again/ A new world united in hope.
The figure is that of singer Usha Uthup, while the baritone belongs to Amitabh Bachchan. Big B is among the 84 artistes from across the country who have come on board an album in the aftermath of tsunami.
?This is, perhaps, the first time that the musical fraternity in India has come together on such a scale after a natural calamity,? said S.F. Karim, business manager, Saregama India, which has released the album entitled We Believe in Now.
The credits list is a virtual who?s who: Shaan, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Shankar Mahadevan, Kavita Krishnamurthy? from Bollywood, S.P. Balasubramaniam and Chitra heading the 10-singer list from the south, members of local bands like Cactus, Bhoomi, Chandrabindoo and Krosswindz and a host of singers including Nachiketa, Shilajit, Indrani Sen, Sriradha Bandyopadhyay and Rupankar from Bengal.
And why only singers? Actors Jeet, Indrani Halder, Koel Mullick, June and Sabyasachi Chakraborty have pitched in as well for the second phase of the venture ? video recordings of the songs. ?Every artiste, right from Mr Bachchan, readily agreed and without any remuneration,? said Usha Uthup, whose brainchild the project is.
Recalling the interaction with Bachchan in Mumbai, she says: ?He took less than a minute to say yes but getting his date was the problem.? The recording ultimately happened in October.
While the music (by Sobhan Mukherjee, Andy Park and Raja Deb) was recorded here, voices of the outstation singers were recorded in Mumbai and Chennai.
Recalls Hariharan, speaking from Mumbai: ?I enjoyed singing for the project. When a disaster of this magnitude occurs, it is everyone?s duty to do his bit in whichever way.?
The project has brought the actor out of Nachiketa. Other than his voice and pen, he has lent himself to the role of a singer who has lost his family to the killer wave in the video that accompanies one of the 10 songs in the album.
Its Tamil and Malayalam version has singers from the south facing the camera.
?We are trying to bring out a VCD as these days, songs have to seen as well as heard,? said Uthup. A shoot with the Bollywood singers is also on the cards, revealed Karim.
The album has songs in Hindi and English as well, with musicians Bikram Ghosh, Tanmoy Bose, Nondon Bagchi, Anjum Katyal and Jayshree Singh pitching in. ?Such a project has a national audience,? Uthup points out.
The singer had started penning the songs three days after disaster in 2005.
?A year may have passed, but the extent of damage is such that rehabilitation will go on forever. I hope to take the show to every tsunami-hit part of the country, from Port Blair to Vailankani,? she tuned off.

 Re: Nachiketa Chakrabarty
If food be the love of music, eat on, sing on!
By Biplab Ganguli
What happens when a few friends, all from different walks of life, put their minds together to restore, preserve and perpetuate heritage from both sides of Bengal? Such grit and determination did these long-time friends demonstrate to achieve this end after a few serious brainstorming sessions, that they tasted success in a short while, three years ago?.
And for these three years, Calcutta is buzzing with one name, which made waves in culinary delicacies from Bengal ? Bhojohori Manna, named after a mythical chef, made immortal many years ago by the legendary Manna Dey when he lent his voice to one of the most popular Bengali film songs, Ami Sri Sri Bhojohori Manna.
Noted filmmaker Goutam Ghose, former SAIL executive Rajiv Neogi, ‘Topshe’ of the film Sonar Kella and portfolio consultant Siddhartha Chatterjee, businessman Ranjit DuttaGupta and former Tata executive Siddhartha Bose, are the brains behind the chain of these four extremely popular restaurants in the city.
These entrepreneurs along with HMV SaReGaMa have come up with CD of timeless appeal, Bhojohori Manna. In doing so, two of the most popular aspects of Bengal’s speciality have been bridged ? Food and Music. It is interesting to note that the palate has inspired the pen of Bengali songwriters for a long time.
Manna Dey is the only living member of the quartet of Ami Sri Sri Bhojohori Manna, which was composed by Pulak Bandopadhyay and set to tune by Sudhin Dasgupta. The actor who lipped this extremely popular number in the film, Prothom Kodom Phul, was Samit Bhanja.
All the 14 songs which find place in this handpicked collection, portray the gastronomic delight associated with the average Bengali. Apart from the title song by Manna Dey, other wellknown voices include Manabendra Mukherjee, Nachiketa, Anjan Dutta, Suman Chattopadhyay, Anup Ghoshal, Amit Kumar, Nisith Sadhu, Arati Mukherjee, Shakti Thakur and of course the doyens of Rabindrasangeet ? Asoketoru Banerjee and Hemanta Mukhopadhyay.
Timeless compositions of Pulak Bandopadhyay, Gouriprasanna Majumdar, Pranab Roy, Suman Chattopadhyay and Hiren Bose co-exist with Rabindranath Tagore, Rajanikanta Sen, Sukumar Ray and Satyajit Ray.
The music of stalwarts like Sudhin Dasgupta, Hemanta Mukhopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore, Satyajit Ray, Anup Ghosal and Soumitro Banerjee have added exquisite flavour to such songs like Jodi jote roj emni, Haridasher bulbul bhaja, Bhooter raja dilo bor, Ei dakho pencil, Dadar hotele khai and others.
The restaurant chain uses the catchline ‘Swade Gune Bhorpur Ahar’, meaning ‘Fine dining in great taste and appeal’ ? the first of this collection of CDs, go a long way in justifying the great taste and appeal of each one of the songs featured in the album.
Some of these are being hummed by Bengalis for years while some others are rarely heard but equally enjoyable in word and tune.
The CD pack, too, looks very attractive with the brand logo of Bhojohori Manna on it ? the chef ‘Kathburo’ ? a product of the timeless genius of Sukumar Ray in Abol Tabol. Recommended as a must-have for all connoisseurs of food ? and music.
