Genius godfather for Prateik...

AR Rahman is highly impressed by the actor's talent

Prateik may have none other than composer AR Rahman to thank for his role in his latest film directed by Gautam Menon.

Prateik

Apparently, when Gautam decided to remake his Tamil superhit Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa, the late Smita Patil's son was just one of the many young actors under consideration for the lead role. Buzz is that Rahman helped narrow down the search.

Says a source, "Gautam had a few young faces in mind for the role, including Jackie Shroff's son Tiger. However, it was Rahman who insisted that he shouldn't bother looking for anyone else but Prateik."

Though the actor made an impressive debut with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, his career has not exactly been on an uphill since.

Especially, his last two films Aarakshan and My Friend Pinto did little for the actor's resume. In fact, in all these years, Rahman has never really recommended any actor for a role, so naturally this comes as quite a surprise.

AR Rahman

Adds the source, "Rahman first met Prateik during Jaane Tu ¦ and he instantly took a liking to the boy. He was pretty impressed by his performance in the film and had even predicted that he will have a bright future."

Apparently Rahman even told Gautam that he was so sure of the actor that even a screen test would be unnecessary.

Confirms the director, "It's true that Rahman had very good things to say about Prateik. He strongly suggested that I should only look at him for this role." Menon and Rahman have known and worked with each other for years together and not surprisingly he trusts Rahman's judgment a lot.

Concludes the source, "They have been friends for years now and Rahman knows how important this film is for Gautam." Only when the film releases, we'll know if Prateik has proven worthy of the maestro's trust.

  • Impressed by Indian actor Prateik’s acting skills in “Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa,” A.R. Rahman suggested his name to director Gautham Menon for “Ekk Deewana  Tha.”

  • Rahman, 45, has composed seven tracks for Prateik’s first solo love story, which marks Menon’s return to Bollywood after the cult romance “Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein” in 2001. “Prateik is a brilliant actor. He has got brilliant acting  skills. I worked with him three years ago in ‘Jaane Tu...’ and his fresh acting skills appealed me. As Gautham was looking for some fresh talent in his film, I suggested his name to him,” said Rahman on the sidelines of the music launch of the film here Dec. 21.

  • The film, which is a remake of Menon’s own Tamil film “Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa,” has got two original tracks written by lyricist Javed Akhtar. “I felt singer Leon D’Souza’s voice fits Prateik and apart from him there are other new voices in the film. It is a love story, so it demanded some fresh talents in it. The five songs in the film were the Hindi remake of Tamil tracks and a track, ‘Mohabatein...,’ was written by Javed saab within an hour’s time,” he added. Asked to share the experience of working with one of the biggest filmmakers in the South, Rahman said, “Gautham Menon is my favourite director. I consider myself lucky to work with him.”

I’ve always had a fascination for the word Hosanna: Rahman

Oscar winner AR Rahman's latest love song, Hosanna from Ekk Deewana Tha, is gaining popularity. The soundtrack of the film, starring Prateik and Amy Johnson, has other sentimental and dreamy numbers as well.

Speaking about the music, which was launched at the Taj Mahal in Agra, Rahman said, "This is my favourite romantic album in recent times. While I have been doing music for many young actors, I haven't composed a full-blown romantic album for a while. You can say that this marks my comeback to that genre."

Of Hosanna, he said, "I've always had a fascination for the word. I kept hearing it in a church and I had no idea what it meant. Then I found out it means 'glory'."

Since Ekk Tha Deewana is a South remake, most of the original tracks have been retained along with fresh tracks in the Hindi version.Director Gautham Vasudev Menon, who also helmed the Tamil and Telugu versions, added, "I am glad to see that the track has become popular and is being played across the country. This film is very close to my heart and I wanted to share its magic with the Hindi audience. I am happy I have the support of Rahman and Javed Akhtar." Vijay Singh, CEO, Fox Star Studios, said, "Rahman's soulful music has connected with people in a big way. The film will strike a chord with audiences across the world."

Ekk Deewana Tha will release worldwide on February 17.

Please note that comparisons to the original Tamil soundtrack (“Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaa”) are fully justified when you try and understand why certain songs have translated well into the Hindi version compared to others. Otherwise the fact that “Ekk Deewana Tha” is a remake should not be to its detriment! If you haven't heard the original then listen to this with a clear conscious and enjoy!

Another year another Rahman soundtrack! Just like he ended the previous year with a bang, delivering a superlative effort for Rockstar, a soundtrack that eventually turned out to be the best of 2011, he sets an early benchmark for 2012 with a romantic soundtrack for Ekk Deewana Tha. The fact that the film and music is a remake of his award winning soundtrack to Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaa works in favour of the composer because it allows him to transfer the best songs for the Bollywood film and add some fresh songs at the same time. This genre is arguably the most challenging for any music composer but we all know that nothing phases the meastro although his choice of lyricist (Javed Akhtar) is critical to the outcome of the Hindi version. Rahman's last great romantic soundtrack in Bollywood was Saathiya which was released almost a decade ago (2002) so can he repeat the magic in “Ek Deewana Tha”?

The album commences with an original song not taken from the Tamil soundtrack. It’s a pleasant orchestra based ode on love called “Kya Hai Mohabbat” . The music is very slow and soft creating the ambience of bliss and and serenity, adjectives you normally associate with the feelings of love and mohabbat. While the music soothes your senses, the purity in Rahman’s vocals will cleanse your soul with the help of a lovely chorus in the background. Javed Akhtar has written better romantic lines but their simplicity works for Rahman’s vocals. This is just the type of song to get you in the romantic mood so a good start but you expect better things to come.

“Dost Hai (Girl I Love You)” tries to experiment with the original song but the end result is an average translation. At the core there is a romantic vibe provided by the melodic strings of a viola and the vocals of Naresh Iyer who sounds very much like Javed Ali! Remixed onto this core is a modern rap song with beats and mixing composed by new age musicians Sachin Jigar and rap vocals by Jaspreet Jasz. Was this remixing necessary? Maybe it was but the effect is that Javed Akhtar’s lines are just overpowered by the rap portions so hold very little impact. Just give it a try and it might click otherwise move on. The original was a lot better.

Listen closely and you will quickly sense the outstanding qualities of “Aromale (My Beloved)” which are the hallmarks of classic Rahman! Like all his classic compositions, the music consists of multiple layers of instrumentation but the guitar riffs are undoubtedly the highlight. In fact the guitars are strummed so precisely and expertly here you can feel the tension of each TWANG explode in your ears! Then there’s the wonderful integration of multiple languages (in this case Hindi lines by Javed Akhtar and Malayalam lines by Kaithapram Damodaram Nambuthri) through the use of Alphonse Joseph (who also sang in the original). His stunning vocals deliver powerful mood swings throughout the song with some amazing alaapsthat are tagged onto the end of words such as “Aromale”. There is intensity and angst through the highs and there is a sense of loneliness and despair through the lows but deep down all these emotions are underpinned by one feeling…Love. He is brilliant but his performance is made possible by Rahman’s ingenuity for what is easily, the BEST song of Ek Deewana Tha. If you haven’t heard the original now is your chance to savour…

Imagine a super slow version of “Aromale” with a temptress at the helm? Well that’s exactly what awaits you in a quite stunning rendezvous of this song called “Broken Promises” which is found later in the soundtrack (Track 9). Rahman just unplugs the music here and allows Shreya Ghoshal to intoxicate proceedings with her mesmerising alaaps...just close your eyes and allow it to consume your senses.

Love is definitely in the air with the fabulous “Hosanna” , a song that was the biggest hit from the original Tamil soundtrack and listening to it here in the remake, you can understand why. The infectious music just lifts you off your feet and makes you want to fall in love (again and again)! The fitting atmosphere is provided by a serene orchestra topped with a mesh of peppy beats and guitar strumming together with English verses by Blaaze, giving it a truly modern setting. Leon D’Souza’s youthful vocals are perfect whilst Suzanne D’mello provides background chants and alaaps. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics do the trick but again one expected better from him. Overall “Hosanna” is another highlight from the album and if your in the right mood expect it to hog your playlist for a long while.

“Phoolon Jaisi” is a background song depicting the feelings of our lover who is totally besotted by his newfound love. The dreamy music is pleasant enough but rarely keeps your attention however the fact that it’s a background song means it might work better on screen. Clinton Cerejo and Kalyani Menon (Malayalam lyrics) sing well but unfortunately Javed Akhtar’s lyrics are pretty drab throughout. This makes it one of the weaker songs here with very little replay value. It’s a shame because the original version worked a lot better.

“Sharminda Hoon” is pretty hardcore from the onset but give it a chance and you will find a beautiful love duet between Madhushree and A.R.Rahman. With a strong melodic core provided by the piano, A.R. uses a number of traditional instruments to give sincerity to the song including the flute. He also tries to invigorate Javed Akhtar’s poetry with some haunting choir chants of Allama Iqbal’s poetry (in the interludes) and the effect is welcoming. Madhushree’s performance is the highlight of the song and Rahman acts as supporting singer. The only question mark against the song is the replay value which is quite limited but no doubt it will have an important role to play in the film. This is a good translation of the original.

For something a bit livelier try “Sunlo Zara” which breezes through the blocks from start to finish! The music isn’t anywhere near as intricate as other songs from the album but the purpose is to get your feet tapping with the protagonists of the film who are brimming with mutual happiness! And thanks to fantastic vocals by Rashid Ali and Shreya Ghoshal you feel their enthusiasm and sprightliness. The lyrics could have been better but we only feel that because the bar has been lifted by the likes of Amitabh Bhattacharya. Not a bad translation overall and will sound damn good on the screen no doubt.

“Zohra-Jabeen” belongs to the group of slow love songs from the album that will act as a background song in the film. Again while the music is pleasant enough particularly the use of multiple string instruments, it is unlikely to light any fireworks due to the slow pace, short length and mundane lines. Again the original worked a lot better than this.

The rest of the tracks are instrumentals but as with all Rahman instrumentals they are not just any instrumentals. They are composed with a lot of finesse and attention to detail. “Broken Promises” is an awesome revisit of Aromale as discussed previously. The romantic theme just exudes from “Moments in Kerala” and “Jessie’s Land” where the piano and violin are used to ethereal effect. Background alaaps are provided by Prabhakar and Mehga. Lastly, “Jessie’s Driving Me Crazy” is a short but rocking tune with vocals by Sanjeev Thomas and Timmy.

Comparisons are unfair but sometimes necessary. “Vinnaithandi Varuvaayaa” was an award-winning soundtrack. After hearing “Ek Deewana Tha” you can appreciate why the original Tamil version was such a big hit – songs like “Aromale”,“Hosanna” and “Sharminda Hoon” sound refreshing even for the romantic genre! Unfortunately half the songs have not translated well. These include “Dost Hai”, “Phoolon Jaisi” and “Zohra-Jabeen” mainly because Javed Akhtar’s lines just don’t have the same effect with the original music and with all due respect, maybe A.R. should have gone with a modern lyricist who is better equipped to deal with such songs? As a result the soundtrack will not be as big a hit in Bollywood but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s a failure, in fact the decision to do a remake was the right one given that it was the only way of ensuring the original soundtrack reached a wider fan base and audience. But questions remain. Could more original songs have been added to the remake apart from the instrumentals? Yes. Could more experimenting have been done? Maybe. Does it have the replay value of his previous Rockstar? No!

AR Rahman may have shied away from the camera for years, but the music maestro will soon be seen in the first-ever music video of the romantic number, Mohabbatein from Ekk Deewana Tha (EDT).

The multiple Oscar-winning composer sung the song himself. EDT director and Rahman’s friend, Gautham Menon has shot the video for him. “AR has been extremely excited about the entire album. In fact, it was his idea to shoot the song,” says Vijay Singh of Fox Star Studios, producer of EDT.

Previously, Rahman made a cameo in Akon’s music video of the popular hit, Beautiful. However, this time, he will be seen singing the song and playing the piano. Mohabbatein is Rahman’s favourite song from the film’s soundtrack. “It’s a very romantic song. And since the film is all about romance and love, Rahman sir’s involvement with the song has made it (the song) special for all of us,” says a source from the production unit. Makers plan to unveil the video at the success party of the song, Hosanna.

Ek Deewana ThaStarring Prateik and Amy Jackson, EDT is a remake of Menon’s Tamil film, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. Rahman composed score for the Tamil version too. He and other cast members released the soundtrack album at Taj Mahal in Agra.

Amy is a very hard-to-please girl: Prateik

    February 06, 2012 16:10 IST
    Ankur Pathak in Mumbai

Amy Jackson, PrateikThe upcoming Gautham Menon-directed musical Ekk Deewana Tha, which has songs composed by Academy Award winner A R Rahman, landed in a controversy when a Catholic group wanted the word 'Hossana' removed from a popular song in the album.

To clear the air about this and also promote the film, the producers called a press conference in Mumbai. Present were the film's cast and Fox Star's CEO Vijay Grover. Rahman's flight was delayed so he couldn't make it on time.

"The song has become a chartbuster and this is a great achievement for not only the film but also for Rahman. The song is charting at number one on radio in three languages," Grover announced.

He claimed that, "Hossana is a term of endearment which has a lot of positive value. The reality is it is a beautiful love song. This film along with the music video has been approved by the Censor Board. There is no doubt about what we have put out. The song has been sabotaged by people who have their own interests and agendas.

"Javed Akhtar and A R Rahman are highly regarded people in the industry who wouldn't do anything that would insult anybody or hurt sentiments," Grover stated.

Lead actor of the film Prateik (Dhobi Ghat, Aarakshan) said the film's music had a magical effect on him. "I get in a very romantic mood. The songs of the film put me in an altogether different state of elation."

There are reports that Prateik and his leading lady, British model Amy Jackson, are romantically involved. Any truth in that?

Amy Jackson"Look, she is a very pretty girl and I am truly fond of her. I'm trying, but she happens to be a very hard-to-please girl. What to do?" Prateik quipped.

Amy Jackson then took the mike and said, "Ever since I moved to Mumbai from London, Prateik has been very, very supportive. The film happened and I must say we have come very close. It's a very intimate relationship.

"He is a very special person. We have a great chemistry. It is a romantic film, so sparks are bound to fly. We enjoy each other's company."

Asked if he is living with Amy in her Bandra apartment, Prateik said he wished the report was true.

"I feel really good about myself when you say that. Look at her; she is gorgeous (points at Amy). But, no, I haven't moved in."

Asked if she was using the relationship merely to accelerate her Bollywood career, a visibly displeased Amy said that was far from the truth.

"I had no clue about Bollywood and my knowledge about the industry was non-existent. After this film happened, I'm enjoying every moment to the fullest. I don't think I would need any false report to strengthen my career. I can manage it on my own."

About Bollywood, the latest British entrant said, "It is one of the largest film industries in the world and I knew nothing about it. But, now, after this film and meeting the media, I feel I have always been a part of it."

The fans of the music of Ek Deewana Tha were eagerly waiting for the full song video of Phoolon Jaisi Ladki, and here the video arrives, making waves on the web. Catch how Prateik Babbar is trying to woo Amy Jackson by singing Phoolon Jaisi Ladki.

With A R Rahman’s melodious music and romantic lyrics by Javed Akhtar, the track Phoolon Jaisi Ladki is a Hindi version of the popular Tamil track Omana Penne from the movie Vinnaithandi Varuvaya.

As Bollywood’s fascination with the foreign hotties continues, no wonder, we see the ‘Ek Deewana Tha’ girl Amy Jackson as the next big thing in Bollywood. This British girl, who has earlier won the title of Miss Teen World in 2008, can now boast of a huge fan list, thanks to her desi avatar in the film.

Amy plays Malayali Christian girl Jessie in the film and has a simple yet very striking face. The song Phoolon Jaisi Ladki is beautifully picturised on her and Prateik at various foreign and Indian locales. Also one can notice Amy’s fair complexion shown a tone darker to make her look very Indian.

The addition of Malayalam lines in the end of the song adds drama to its dreamy sequence.

We found Prateik Babbar and his rumoured girlfriend Amy Jackson in quite a romantic mood at the rocks in Bandra's Carter road, in surbuban Mumbai. The actors, who will co-star in Ekk Deewana Tha, talk about love, S** and dhoka and get ready for Valentine's Day.

The romantic shores of Bandra's Carter road have played catalyst to many love stories in the city. So the setting seemed ideal for Prateik and Amy Jackson to talk love, marriage and of course, their forthcoming movie Ekk Deewana Tha.

Prateik went on to sing to Amy as well, even as he admitted he would love to be a playboy for the rest of his life.
