Music maestro A R Rahman is back after double glory at the Oscars. And it was a welcome that could beat any red carpet at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

He returned to Chennai by an Emirates flight at 2.30 am and hundreds of fans turned up to welcome him.

There was a virtual stampede at the airport and Rahman almost got mobbed. He said that he'd never experienced such a welcome.

The musician, who first made a splash with Mani Ratnam's Roja, bagged two Oscars at for Best Original Score and Best Song for Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman wins, family rejoices

Celebrations erupted on Monday in Chennai from where A R Rahman hails.

Rahman won two Oscars -- Best Original Score and Best Origina Song, Jai Ho -- in Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, becoming the first Indian composer to strike gold at the annual Hollywood awards.

The award for Jai Ho was shared by Rahman and renowned lyricist Gulzar.

Resul Pookutty also walked away with the golden trophy for Best Sound Mixing.

The critically acclaimed film has also won an award for the Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography and Best Film editing each. Danny Boyle has been honoured with the Best Director award for Slumdog Millionaire.

Mann Chandre is one of my favorite songs from Connections. Sharadha Pandit’s soft and sweet voice pierces into my heart. Sukhwinder Singh and his vocal range and ability to express like no one else always leaves me astonished and wondering. Very few instruments seem to be used (sitar, tabala). The Punjabi lyrics are quite moving, it is simply beautiful. I wish could understand the meaning of the whole song.

This movies is called Punnagai mannan, a Tamil movie. In this movie only Ilayaraja and A.R. Rahman worked together. This is the first tamil movie to use computer music. A.R. Rahman helped Ilayaraja in arranging for this compostion. He also played key board for illayaraja for many films and punnagai mannan is one of the very notable in that. This movies was directed by K. Balachandar, a legend in Tamil film industry.

The musicians’ union of Tamil cinema congregated a grand function to felicitate AR Rahman for winning the Oscar awards. The function was held at the music academy auditorium on 1st March, Sunday.

Musicians, singers and technicians gather in entirety to congratulate Rahman on his glorious moment. Veteran composers MSV praised him for achieving the dream of every Indian and Illayaraja said that he and Rahman are still pupils of MSV.

'Rahman had no airs at all'

We asked readers if they had ever met Oscar winning composer A R Rahman, and we got quite a response.

Arvind Narayanan writes in to say that he ran into Rahman twice in a day. He shares his memories:

I met A R Rahman twice at the Mumbai airport last September.

While I landed in Mumbai in the morning, I saw a crowd at the car pickup area. When I got closer, I realised that Rahman was being mobbed for autographs.

I waited my turn and even though I was one of the last in the queue, he was gracious enough to sign an autograph and pose for a photograph with me.

I wanted to talk to him but held back as he was looking hassled. Plus, he was busy speaking and texting on his mobile.

Later, when I went to the airline lounge, I ran into Rahman again. He was sitting all alone, waiting for a flight to Chennai. I sat next to him and spoke for about 10 minutes. He was very polite and humble and answered my questions patiently. I would have continued talking but there were a few more fans who wanted to talk to him so I bid him goodbye.

Looking back, I realised that he had no airs at all. He was such a nice gentleman. It was a dream come true for me.

'Rahman is the best'

We asked readers if they had ever met Oscar winning composer A R Rahman, and we got quite a response.

Shyam Shivadas writes in to say that he met Rahman during a reality show a few months ago. He shares his memories:

I was fortunate to meet A R Rahman during the launch of a band hunt reality show -- The Big Band Hunt -- held in Delhi a couple of months back. Rahman was conducting the reality show in association with Phat Phish across seven countries. I was coordinating the media interviews at the event and had to occasionally approach him to inform him about the schedule and mode of interviews.

He was very down-to-earth with no airs of being a maestro in the field.

He was in Delhi only for a few hours, and so he requested me to rush up with interviews. Very soft-spoken with a soft and gentle smile, he obliged whoever approached him for an autograph or photograph. He made me comfortable enough to put my hand across his shoulders for a snap with my colleagues Deepika and Garima.

I often interact with stars in my profession but not someone like him. He is the best.

A R Rahman, as you didn't know him

The struggles and celebrations of A R Rahman's life will be documented in his first ever biography, titled A R Rahman: The Musical Storm, which releases June 10. It has been penned by Chennai-based Kamini Mathai, who has worked in newspapers like Indian Express and The Times of India. This is Mathai's first book.

The 32-year-old tells Patcy N how she got the shy Rahman to open up to her, and reveal himself.

How did you decide on writing about Rahman?

I had no plans of writing a book. Penguin Books India contacted me in 2003 and commissioned me to write this book. Actually, they were looking out for people to write the book on Rahman. They had short-listed some journalists; I was among them. They had seen my articles in the Indian Express. Christin Sabraini, from Penguin, asked me to give her a brief, and how I would go about it. I did, and was selected.

How did you go about it?

I read up as much as possible on Rahman. I read whatever material I could get on him, so that I would know where the biography would start from. I jotted down names mentioned by him in his interviews, like Sudarshan master [music director], M K Arjunan master [music director, and his father R K Shekhar's colleague], L Vaidyanathan [music director] and Thomas Isaac Kathukapli [ad filmmaker, who composes music as well]. I started tracing these people and found managed to talk to most of them. I also spoke to people who knew his father.

I bought Rahman's music as well.

What was the toughest part of the biography?

Rahman's past -- his childhood and growing up years. Getting details on his father was difficult. But as I met more and more people, I started getting the details I needed.

Rahman began his own music recording and mixing studio in 1992. The studio, called the Panchathan Record Inn, was built alongside the backyard of his house. The studio has now been developed into India's most advanced recording studio. He composed music jingles for advertisements and Indian television channels during the initial stage of his career. His first big break came in 1992 when film director Mani Ratnam approached him to compose the music for the Tamil film 'Roja'. Rahman's music in the film won him the Rajat Kamal award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards. Rahman has won three more National Film Awards since then.

Musician A R Rahman created history by becoming the first Indian to win two Oscar Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song for Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. RAHMAN’S AND SHANKAR’S MOM FELICITATED

Sri Krishna Sweets had arranged for a function at the Kamaraj Arangam in Chennai to felicitate the mothers of AR Rahman and Shankar. The event began at 6 pm and was attended by a host of celebrities.

The function was held to honor the mothers that were instrumental in making their children world famous. Rahman’s mother Kareema Begum, Shankar’s mother Muthu Lakshmi and Kamala Theatre owner Nagu Chidambaram’s mother Kamala Chidambaram were honored during the event.
