Lataji is my Saraswati: Rekha Bhardwaj

Her voice is husky and sensual, very different from that of the singing legend Lata Mangeshkar, but playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj still considers the nightingale of India her idol and describes Lata as Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning.

"Lataji is my Saraswati. I am very fortunate that I got a chance to see Lataji's recordings and the way she prepares for a song. She is something else. Nobody can be her. We cannot reach that level," Rekha told IANS.

The singer says every song by Lata is a lesson in itself. "Whenever I need to learn something, I listen to her songs and see where she breathes out, where she breathes in, etc," she said.

Rekha feels that such was Lata's talent that she used to lift even mediocre compositions with her voice.

"Even at that time there were some mediocre compositions, but when someone like Lataji used to sing it she used to take it to some other level altogether - such is her talent."

Rekha, who is married to filmmaker-composer Vishal Bhardwaj, has musical roots that lie in Sufi, folk and classical genres. She released her first album "Ishqa Ishqa" in 2004 to critical acclaim. However, it was her song "Namak ishq ak" in her husband's directorial venture "Omkara" that really won her accolades.

The singer has carved a niche for herself and is known for hits like "Genda phool" from "Delhi-6" and "Pehle baar mohabbat ki hai" from "Kaminey".

When asked what took her so long to showcase her talent to the world, Rekha said that she was waiting for the right songs.

"I am very glad I started getting songs that I like and fit my style and understanding. I waited and it paid off," she said.

"Today there are no limits or confines for a singer. Any singer can sing any song. So even though I have a different voice, I can sing a romantic number or may be something else, provided I like it," she added.

Rekha, who is planning to launch her second album next year, was in the capital to attend the 11th Osian's Cinefan film festival and to give a surprise performance of selected Gulzar songs at the inaugural ceremony in honour of the lyricist.

"I am attending this festival for the first time. Gulzar saab got the lifetime achievement award here. It's an honour to be able to do something for Gulzar saab. My performance was a surprise and we managed to keep it a surprise till last moment - that was a great thing," Rekha said.

The singer will be next heard in films like "Radio", "Ishqiya" and "Raavan".

Music profile: Rekha Bhardwaj

Spreading her Wings

If you are the wife of an ace director-music composer, making a debut in Bollywood must be a breeze, right' Wrong. Not when you are Rekha Bhardwaj and your husband is Vishal Bhardwaj. Although Vishal helped his wife to make her debut, it was only after he was convinced that she truly had the talent to shine in his production.

Rekha Bhardwaj arrived in Bollywood with the number Namak ishq ka in Omkara, composed by her husband Vishal Bhardwaj. She confesses that her husband has been her friend, philosopher, and guide. And when it comes to career, she first consults, you guessed it, Vishal. He is both, her most ardent fan and hard-hearted critic. His constructive criticism helps improve her style and it is because of him that she has been able to become a successful singer, she smiles.

Rekha has been singing exclusively for her husband 1999 but now sings for other composers too. The industry simply assumed that she would not be willing to sing for anyone else. That, she says without bitterness, is typical of the film industry. Again, considering that Vishal was a hugely successful music composer, that assumption may have been justified. Now, other music composers are approaching her and she obliges them if she likes the song. She smiles again.

However, it was with Namak ishq ka that Rekha truly arrived. Her album Ishqa Ishqa released earlier did not make waves in the market. That may have been because the album lacked Western nuances favored by today's music buffs. Namak ishq ka changed all that and she is now concentrating on learning current trends so that she can sing accordingly.

To those who believed that Rekha could perform only under the tutelage of Vishal, her answer was the title track in Aditya Chopra's Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. Music director Shamir Tandon has the knack of bringing out the best in her, she smiles. She had worked with Shamir in Red Swastik and Superstar earlier. She is now awaiting Raiv Chopra's film, in which Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have given her a great number. She has also recorded for A.R. Rahman in Dilli 6 and for Nitin Soni, a new music director.

She is thorough in her approach and needs two or three days to prepare for a song. Although there are singers who learn songs in an hour and record them on the same day, Rekha prefers not to be one of them. Any music composers she would like to work for' Himesh Reshammiya, she answers in a blink. And why' Because he uses Indian melodies successfully. Not many composers can do that now.

What next' A new album. That smile again.

Priya Rajendran, Hindustan Times
New Delhi, October 26, 2009

RekhaOne can still hear every third person on the street singing or humming Raat ke dhai baje (Kaminey) or Genda Phool (Delhi 6). That’s the effect Rekha Bhardwaj has on people’s minds. She has certainly struck a chord with audiences. Her songs have brought back an earthiness to Indian music – especially Bollywood that was gently veering itself towards western music.

Rekha Bharadwaj received critical acclaim for her first album in 2004 titled Ishqa Ishqa. Her songs in Omkara, especially Namak, which were written by Gulzar and composed by Vishal, was well-appreciated.

Rekha opened the 11th Osians Film festival with her famous Namak song and further went on to sing a medley of all Gulzar songs in the lyricist’s honour as he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Osian's on October 24.

Very clearly one can see the happiness and gleam in her eyes as she talks about music and her life. Though her husband is surrounded by media for interviews, she sits calmly, appearing to be much above all the hype and attention.

Rekha Bharadwaj unravels her hidden self to Priya Rajendran

Rekha Bharadwaj as Vishal Bhardwaj’s wife or as a singer? How would you like to be identified as?
Rekha as a human being and as a mother of my only son

Are earthy numbers your speciality?

I have not chosen this genre, it came naturally to me. I have a classical background and have grown up listening to thumris, semi-classical music too. Basically from Delhi, I studied music in the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya for 8 years. Right from childhood, I had this special liking towards singing tragic songs.

Your journey began with Ishqa Ishqa. Your experiences?

The song Raat ki Jogan from the album Ishqa Ishqa was conceived in 1994, almost 10 years before it released, when Vishal had started composing Bulle Shah's poetry for my album.

Your career graph till now has been good till now. Does it help being the wife of Vishal Bharadwaj?

Yes, it definitely helps. Till now I have been singing songs for all his films. My career started with Ishqa, Ishqa in 2004. It helped me explore my inner self. Gulzarji and Vishal have also encouraged me a lot in my career. I used to go with Vishal for music sittings with Gulzar for his movie Maachis and one day Gulzarji said he will write for my album. The rest as you know is history. My album won many accolades.

Singers generally do not have a say in the songs that are given to them, but as Vishal’s wife, you must have found it easier.

That’s an entirely wrong assumption. In fact, just like any singer, I also do not have a say in how many songs I can sing or the choice of songs etc. The only choice I have is the range of the song (high or low).

So who are your musical idols?

Lata Mangeshkar, Begum Akhtar, Rashid Khan and many others…

Music you love to unwind with...

I love the feel of Sufi music and can listen to it anytime. My first album gave me a chance to enter the world of Sufism. For me, music is my soul and I begin my day with riyaaz even before my first cup of tea. I feel complete only then. Nahi to kuchh adhura-sa lagta hai!

Any upcoming projects…

I am singing many songs for the Vidya Balan-starrer movie Ishquia. The songs are sung in Raag Lalit and have a classical touch to them. Other than that, I am also learning Jazz and Blues.
