A hiatus later, the band came together as Remember Shakti, with mandolin maestro U. Shrinivas and kanjira artiste Selvaganesh taking the place of L. Shankar and Vikku Vinayakram who were part of the original band. Shankar Mahadevan joined in for vocals. Remember Shakti will perform in Hyderabad this Friday. Ahead of the concert, Zakir Hussain talks about the journey of Shakti and Remember Shakti and its brand of music that crossed boundaries defined by genres. What were the challenges when you and John McLaughlin came together?#ed_op#/B#ed_cl# #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=body#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#Shakti was one of the first combinations of musicians trying to do something that crossed all musical boundaries. John Mclaughlin and I met in California in 1973. I was living in the Bay Area. He wanted to meet Ali Akbar Khan, with whom I was playing at the time and also teaching at his music college. So I took John to his home in this small town of Fairfax. They met, and at some point Ali Akbar Khan said, �Well, play something for me.� John had his guitar with him and he asked if I would play with him. We didn't approach each other thinking �Okay, you (L. Shankar) play South Indian, I play North Indian and John plays Jazz and let us see what happens'. We just jumped into the wagon and took a ride together. The record companies had no idea what to call Shakti, which category of music to fit into, or which bin in the record shop to put it in. So they looked at it with great hesitancy. We keep talking about doing a new album but the team of Shakti is making a lot of music individually and it keeps us all very busy. It is difficult to find time for all five of us to be able to spend time together to record an album. Shankar was nowhere to be found. Vikkuji was getting old and was finding it difficult to tour, so he asked us if we could take his son Selva Ganesh instead and we were more than happy. And U. Shrinivas took the place of L. Shankar with his mandolin. But this demographic change has already changed social, cultural and political attitudes. These have great significance for the future. The numbers of the young are large and, for over 30 years, will dominate the population. They have transformed the ways in which the young think and work. Older generations have always talked about how different the new generation is. In two months (that is, till January 21), 38 million had downloaded from YouTube the song, �Why this Kolaveri Di�. It is sung in �Tanglish� (mixed Tamil and English). Another two million had downloaded take-offs in other languages and with themes other than the angst of a young man ditched by his girl friend. Many more millions in other countries have danced to its tune (for example, Japan). It has had many imitators in other countries as well as in India � the most interesting being the one from Pakistan titled, �Where is democracy ji?�. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#The words, the tune, the singing, the video, the 20-something-aged singers, are not traditional or classical. It is a song that expresses anguish, challenge and the use of other stimulants to forget a hurt. But neither the song nor its content is the object of my comments here. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#This is perhaps the first instance of a message or a song that went �viral� on the internet in India. Within a week of its release on YouTube, it had been seen by five million on the social media. The traditional media recognized it only some time after it had spread on the social media. For older people, accustomed to the traditional print and television media for news, the news of the swift and unseen spread of the song was a jolt. It told us that the internet as a �viral� disseminator of information was not merely a phenomenon confined to the Arab world, where it caused the downfall of dictatorships, or to the United States of America, where it enabled an unknown black candidate to raise more money than any other candidate and go on to win the presidential election. The internet helped the mobilization of large crowds in support of Anna Hazare and the jan lok pal bill. Its unique ability to mobilize millions on the streets at short notice was hidden from many because of the 24x7 television coverage. The runaway dissemination and success of this song tell us that internet-based revolutions could happen in India. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#We can confidently expect that some Indian leader will soon organize mobilization on the internet for building mass support. The internet enables information dissemination, education on what is wrong and what can be done about it, and calls for action. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#In the early 1990s, I edited books and wrote articles on the market demographics of India, highlighting the numbers in the emerging consuming classes and the crucial importance of the poor as a market for goods and services. In the 20 years since then, India has experienced significant growth in gross domestic product and per capita income at constant prices, a large portion of this consumption being done by the below-35 age group. While inequalities have increased (some rich getting much richer), the distribution of income has also changed. The number and proportions of the destitute have been falling while higher levels in the market pyramid are rising rapidly (�aspirants� and �climbers�, as well as the large middle of the �consuming classes�). Another classification of markets shows that the number of households in the lowest socio-economic classifications, D and E, has remained the same but the higher A, B and C classifications have risen sharply. Ownership and purchase of manufactured consumer products and durables have risen among the low income groups. The attraction is more towards speedy action and an �in-your-face� attitude. Among this growing young demographic category, the music tends to be Western pop, Indian film songs, Indian pop. The content of Indian film music has changed and is possibly less soulful and with more of a beat. The young of today, especially the urban, are sold on products that feature new technologies (iPod, iPad, smartphone, laptop and so on). Dress styles have become more casual, and it is the rare young woman who wears a #ed_op#I#ed_cl#sari#ed_op#/I#ed_cl# every day or a little more old-fashioned #ed_op#I#ed_cl#salwar kameez#ed_op#/I#ed_cl#. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#The attitudes of this growing demographic category of the young will determine the future of India. During the Emergency under Indira Gandhi and before the internet, censorship and blanking out of the media did not prevent news from spreading. The urban intelligentsia saw and spread news about the Emergency�s doings. The message spread especially over north India and devastated the Congress in the next elections. Now there is the social media, the internet and the mobile telephone that can, almost instantly (�virally�), spread the values and attitudes of the largely urban youth to the rest of India. #ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl##ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl##ed_op#/FONT#ed_cl# #ed_op#/P#ed_cl##ed_op#P class=story align=left#ed_cl##ed_op#FONT size=4 face="Arial Narrow"#ed_cl#These attitudes and values may not be rebellion as much as rejection of venal leadership, and a demand for speedy and coordinated development. The turnout for Anna Hazare�s campaign, within days of his entering Delhi in August 2011, and in assemblies in other big cities shows the desire for a less corrupt India. The new social media will enable such a movement to rise again. It will be better planned and more effective. They will not surrender their gains easily. It does not. But in the context of the changes in the last 20 years, it enables a reflection on the speed of likely future change. In the past decades, there was not as much contrast between generations as there is today.
