Salim & Suleiman defends!
By MIO Team
Nov 15, 2008

One has been expecting highly from the soundtrack of the most awaited film of the season, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. Coming from Salim and Suleiman, the composer duo who have stirred magic formerly with the YRF banner for ‘Chake De’, there was high expectations laced with the album this time too. Sadly the music has been panned by critics all over the world. However the composers defend lacklustre soundtrack. They have been praising the music of the film throughout.

They say, “The reactions are very good and people have loved the Shah Rukh Khan promo, it’s really different from what we’ve done before.” This statement comes in complete contradiction to what the critics’ view of the music of the film.

For the unimpressive 'Dance

Pe Chance’ number, Suleiman defends, “It’s a situational song and as the release date will come closer, I’m sure people will take to the number in a big way. The important thing is that we are both happy and satisfied with the end product.” About the small number of songs in the film he says, “That was because it required only four songs. We’ve stayed true to the film. And this is something we’ve always done; we never try to push a number when it’s not needed in the script.”

‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ soundtrack comes as a disappointment; the musicians

might agree or may not!

Going strong: Despite the allegations that the song Haule Haule has been lifted from an Adnan Sami number, Salim-Suleiman seem to be going really strong. Besides the music for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye and Roadside Romeo, the director-duo have the soundtrack of the Imran-Shruti Haasan starrer Luck under their belt.

After A.R. Rahman did the nation proud by bagging two Oscars for his Slumdog Millionaire score, it's now the turn of ace music composer duo Salim-Sulaiman to bring some more laurels to the Indian music industry.

In case you are wondering what we are talking about, then let us tell you that the talented duo Salim-Sulaiman have bagged a nomination at the under the 'Outstanding Original Song- Children's and Animation' category.

Sulaiman Merchant who was all excited said, "Yes….Although the feeling hasn't yet sunk in, we are thrilled on bagging the prestigious Emmy nomination. The nomination is for a track called 'We Like Being Small' which we composed for a special episode of Nickelodeon's T.V. show 'The Wonder Pets'. Since the episode 'Save The Bengal Tiger' had an Indian flavour to it, we were approached to do the music and we are glad that we took it up. It can't get more exciting for us now that we have bagged the prestigious Emmy nomination."

While the composer duo are busy with their current lot of Bollywood assignments which includes the background score of Kites, and the music of Teen Patti and Luck, they surely would be gearing up to attend the grand ceremony scheduled to take place on August 30.

We wish Salim- Sulaiman all the best and hope that they indeed come home with the coveted statue and give us all yet another reason to celebrate.

A sound brotherhood

The musical duo Salim-Suleiman has re-defined the world of background music in Bollywood. They first hit the limelight with the film Hamesha. But their biggest turning point came with the background score for Bhoot directed by Ram Gopal Varma. After the success of Bhoot, there was no looking back for the talented brothers as they went on to compose music for films like Darna Mana Hai, Ab Tak Chappan, Teen Deewarein and Dhoom. At present, their background score for the film Kaal is on everybody?s lips and is already a chartbuster. They attribute the success of the song Tauba Tauba to the wonderful picturisation and of course Karan Johar?s conceptualisation of the song. Right now, the brothers are busy composing music for a yet-to-be-titled film from Yash Raj Productions and they have a slew of other films in their kitty too like Boney Kapoor?s Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya and Nagesh Kukunoor?s Iqbal.

SALIM ON SULEIMAN

Honestly speaking, both of us were not on talking terms when we were kids. We used to have crazy fights and our parents had to constantly intervene to calm us down. Being the youngest, I was always at the receiving end as my elder brother, Suleiman used to bully me a lot. But I also was brash with him sometimes. Things became so bad that we almost didn?t speak with each other for three years. We had no reasons for the fights and given an opportunity we used to bring the whole house down. I think that?s because we went to the same school and college.

Both of us have different personalities and are quite opposite in nature. But what brought us together was our shared passion for music. Though I don?t have good memories of playing with Suleiman as a kid, we shared common musical interests. We even had a band of our own and it was our musician-father S.L. Merchant who brought us closer. When we grew up and matured a bit, one day our mother called us and advised us to take up music as a calling. Both of us liked the idea and so we thought of pairing up to compose music. That?s how our musical journey began and today, we don?t have any regrets whatsoever.

People often ask us whether we have any disagreements or differences of opinion while composing now. Disagreements are bound to happen since as individuals, it is normal to have our own opinions. But over the years, we have realised our strong points and our weaknesses and so when we rehearse, we keep all these things in mind. What I appreciate in Suleiman is that as a composer he has a very good sense of sound. He can engineer the whole musical arrangement brilliantly. But what I dislike in him is the fact that he?s not punctual. Suleiman is very lazy. He sleeps a lot and turns up late when we have musical sessions. This attitude of his makes me angry and I often shout at him for being late.

Another interesting thing is that you will not spot us together because have different sets of friends. Also he?s more outgoing and parties hard late into the night. I?m more of a homebody and love to stay at home when I have no work. But inspite of so many differences, at the end of the day, it is music which we are really passionate about. We hope to continue doing good work together in future.

SULEIMAN ON SALIM

As a kid I couldn?t relate to Salim and had fights almost every day. I remember once I had collected Goldspot crowns and got Jungle Book free with it. I was very excited with this offer as I had put in a great effort to collect all these crowns. But one day when I returned from school, I saw that my book was torn into pieces. I got so angry that I caught hold of Salim and twisted his arm. We had such huge fights during our childhood that I could actually write a book on it.

When we decided to compose music, initially we didn?t want to join the Bollywood bandwagon. But it was director Sanjay Gupta who saw the potential in us and offered us a chance to compose music for his film Hamesha. Our next milestone was Bhoot and after that there was no looking back. It?s only when we started composing that we realised our hidden talent.

Although we don?t have fights now like when we were kids, we do have creative differences sometimes. Nowadays, if we fight, it is towards the betterment of a song. Today every argument only brings us closer. What I like about Salim is the fact that he has an enormous amount of energy and is very focused about his work. Unlike him, I am very chilled out and tend to take life as it comes. Salim gets hyper and worried very easily. Therefore, I always advise him to take things easy.

The competition today is far fiercer than before and we have so many talented music directors in the industry. I always tell Salim to be positive in life and continue doing the good work he?s doing. Though we have our own studio in Mumbai, in future we want to shift to a new studio and probably compose music for Hollywood films.

´Luck´ -Why Salim-Suleiman Did Not Do The Background Score!

- Planet Bollywood Special Correspondant

While Salim-Suleiman's soundtrack of the Soham Shah-directed 'Luck' has scored good reviews for hit tracks like "Jee Le" and "Khuda Ya Veh", people were surprised that the background score of 'Luck' has been credited to the well-known Amar Mohile. After all, Salim-Suleiman have always scored the background music of all the films for which they have composed the main soundtrack.

'Luck' happens to be the first film for which they have not scored the background and there were unconfirmed reports that the composer duo were not pleased with the situation.

However, Salim Merchant clarified, "We were tied up with a number of assignments and couldn't find the time to do the background. It was unfortunate that we had to let go especially given that we had done Soham's 'Kaal' earlier."

Says Soham, "Amar Mohile's background music is the highlight of the film. Amar is one of the behind-the-scenes heroes of 'Luck'. I'm happy with my decision to use Amar." 'Luck' releases worldwide on Friday 24th July by Studio 18.

'With a script like Kurbaan, the music just flows'

Last updated on: November 23, 2009

Nithya Ramani in Mumbai

Kurbaan's rave reviews extends to its foot-tapping soundtrack as well. The brother duo Salim-Suleiman, who have belted out hits like Shukran allah and Ali maula, have scored earlier in films like Dor, No Entry and Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya.

Nithya Ramani caught up with the composers and quizzed them on their Kurbaan tunes.

Kurbaan's songs have a Sufi touch.

Salim: Karan wanted the songs to have a Sufi touch.

We were working on Koochi Koochi Hota Hai [an animated film, based on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai] when Karan came to us with the script of Kurbaan. Though it is mainly a background score, we have composed songs too.

Suleiman: The story floored us -- it was thrilling and most importantly, it had Saif [Ali Khan] and Kareena [Kapoor].

Salim: With a script like Kurbaan, the music just flows. For example, Shukran Allah is a song where Saif's character is thanking God for giving him the love of this life, Avantika [Kareena]. In the song he is saying, 'thank you Allah, and all the praise in this world is for you'. It is a beautiful prayer which we decided to turn into a love song, and I think this touch made this song a little different.
