‘Dabangg’ Spectacular Opening Eclipses ‘3 Idiots’ | By R.M. VIJAYAKAR | | indiawest.com | |
|
MUMBAI — Showing the underestimated might of Salman Khan and the power of the lethal combo of superstar charisma and great music aided by power-packed marketing, Arbaaz Khan’s maiden foray into film production, “Dabangg,” opened Sept. 10 to a phenomenal response from the cinema-halls, paving its way to becoming the first blockbuster of the year because it has been made and sold at a reasonable Rs. 40-minus crore.
The film has smashed the myth that masala entertainers do not have a multiplex audience:
“Dabangg” (a negative connotation of “fearless”) has opened in 1,584 screens in India and has reportedly collected Rs. 14 crore on opening day, beating last year’s blockbuster “3 Idiots,” which had netted Rs. 13 crore.
In the U.S., the film opened at the Number 23 spot, with a gross of $628,137 on 62 screens — with a per-screen average of $10,131 that far outshone even America’s Number 1 box office opener, “Resident Evil: Afterlife.”
Reports from all over India show a bumper opening, and if Mumbai is a tad weaker (though still huge), it is only because the opening weekend is of the Ganesh festival, in which the three days from Sept. 10-12 (Ganesh Chaturthi fell on September 11) are essentially days of festival preparations, festivities and social calls. This year, Eid was also postponed in some parts of the country to Sept. 11, and traditional Muslim audiences stayed away till that date.
Salman Khan is now Mumbai’s answer to Rajnikanth, and the film will rewrite b-o history even if a repeat value may be there mostly for hardcore Salman fans.
More significantly, the film consolidates what this reporter has always maintained, that strong music with star-power and face-value can turn an average product into an extraordinary hit, and two, that even the so-called multiplex audience is fed up to the gills with pseudo, wannabe Western or noir cinema and faceless films that make them rue investing time and money on them. The Hindi film masala entertainer has struck again!
The film’s success comes with controversy, however.
Even as the Pakistan government banned the release of “Dabangg” during Eid, Khan said in a Pakistani news channel interview that the 26/11 attacks were “over-hyped,” but later apologized for his statement at his father Salim Khan’s behest, saying that he was misquoted by the media. The Shiv Sena called Khan’s comment “anti-national” and demanded that Khan apologize. Khan issued a brief YouTube video saying he never intended to hurt anyone and apologizing if he had

Re: Salman Khan Is Always Salman Khan.
New Delhi, October 11, 2010 Wonder why Salman is hiding his eyes under sunglasses these days? The actor has undergone a surgery to fix his eye bags, a sign of ageing, if reports are to be believed.
Salman was not only spotted wearing glasses on Friday and Saturday on Bigg Boss, he also walked the ramp for his Being Human show with the shades on.
While speculations were rife regarding what could have possibly gone with Sallu's eye, a Mid Day reporter clicked Salman sans his glares.
"I wanted to find out the truth so I started following Salman the moment the show got over. I found him sitting near his vanity van lying in a chair with ice on his eyes," says the reporter. Salman Khan has apparently got the procedure done in Dubai last week, reports Mid Day.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun An epitome of the typical Indian wedding complete with the rituals and the week-long celebrations, this film definitely showcased one of the most memorable on-screen weddings in Bollywood. Kudos to the director for the lavish sets and the surprise ending. The clothes worn by leading lady Madhuri Dixit, were remarkable in the way they filtered down to the streets. The purple brocade sari she wore for the song Didi tera devar diwana was a hit.

SALMAN-KATRINA WHAT'S BREWING NOW? WHAT'S BREWIN NOW? HHello hello my mazedaar marzipans! Idoknowthat it's thattime of the week Hwhen youwant to lazeunder your sheets awhile longer... But Ihavesuch piping hot gup thatyou'll discard the Mondaymorning blues in ajiffy.Soreadon my sweetums... Seeing the way Salman Khan took Katrina Kaif's case in Bigg Boss recently,Ifelt she shouldhavegiven it back to him. So imagine my surprise when Sher Lock Holmes told me abouther visiting him at his home.
Maybe it's because theywon't be ableto meet on his 45th birthday, which is today, that Katlanded at the Khan household at 9:30pm on Saturdaynight.
And after about one and half hours, the lissome lass left, but not alone. The hunkydude too hadstepped out, to escort Kattoher car.
But she didn't zoom off immediately.I'm told thatthe two stood by her gaadi, chatting agood 20 odd minutes.Apparently, their body language gave the impression thattheysharemorethan just good friendship.
When their conversation ended, Sallu chivalrously openedthe car's door forKat to get in, shut it and bid her farewell, beforeshe drove off.Sowhat's cooking, good lookings?

Re: Salman Khan Is Always Salman Khan.
Dabangg breaks box-office recordsDebangg, the 'fearless' movie produced by Arbaaz Khan has made Bollywood history. Featuring Salman Khan as the hero, the film has surpassed Amir Khan's '3 Idiots' the previous film to break box office records in India. By Amit • September 18, 2010 Source: http://www.desiblitz.com/ "The opening day collections are tremendous."
The Bollywood movie ‘Dabangg’ made its way straight into the Bollywood record books on the first day of release. Superseding takings for Amir Khan’s ’3 Idiots,’ this Salman Khan masala movie grossed over 480 million rupees ($10.4 million) on its opening weekend in India – September 10th-12th 2010. It is the highest opening day grosser as well as the highest weekend grosser to date, at the Indian box office. This has brought Salman Khan into limelight in a very massive way, giving him and his brother Arbaaz Khan, who produced and starred in the film, something to be extremely pleased about. The overall budget of the film is Rs. 30 Crore and the return on it is very healthy. Dabangg is directed by first time director Abhinev Kashyap, who narrated the original story of Dabangg to Arbaaz Khan. And Arbaz who heard the script for over 40 minutes, realised that it was the first project waiting to be produced under the ‘Arbaaz Khan Production’ banner. He took it to Salman Khan who firmly agreed that it should be a family in-house production and subsequently, engaged into the movei as its hero, which Salman says was important since it was Arbaaz’s first production.
Debangg which means ‘fearless’ is about a corrupt cop, Chulbul Panday (Salman Khan) who is fearless, arrogant and makes his own rules. Set in Lalgunj, Uttar Pradesh, the story portrays the complexity of Chulbul’s relationships after having a bitter childhood, losing his father early, having to experience the re-marriage of his mother Naini (Dimple Kapadia) to Prajapati Panday (Vinod Khanna) who subsequently have another son, Makhanchan (Arbaaz Khan) – favoured by his step dad. The story continues to the stage where Chulbul breaks all ties with family and meets his love interest Rajo (Sonakshi Sinha), who turns his world upside down in her own unique and positive way. But he has detractors to deal with, especially Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood) who plays Makhanchan against Chulbul. And the value of family is tested with lots of masala, hit songs and dance sequences. The film also stars Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Tinu Anand and Mahesh Manjrekar.
Daughter of the veteran Bollywood actor, Shatrughan Sinha, Sonakhshi Sinha plays the role of the heroine, Rajo. Her selection for the film came about after Salman Khan met her at a fashion show where she was issuing tickets for the event, as a student. Salman then spoke of Sonakshi to Arbaaz at a music sangeet event which she also attended. Arbaaz had only seen Sonakshi in the past when she was overweight and could not see her playing the role. But after seeing her and meeting her, he was convinced with Salman’s choice. Sinha went on a special diet and trained for two years in order to get into shape for her role as Rajo. Salman said the the role of Rajo was very pinnacle to the film because she had to portray to the public that a son should marry and bring her type of a girl home. Hence, playing the ‘ideal’ daughter-in-law, wife and partner for the hero, Chulbul. One of the key differentiators of Dabangg is the action content. The film is jam-packed with lots of modern style ‘dishoo dishoo,’ very well performed stunts and hero charisma on the screen. Vijayan is the fight master/action choreographer for the action scenes of Debangg. Proud of the action scenes in the film, Arbaaz said, “People make films in about 60-65 days, we’ve taken 55-60 days only to do the action in this film.”

Films with lots of action content do not usually fare well in multiplexes but Debangg seems to have opened the doors for such films to be in fashion once again. Bollywood trade analyst, Amod Mehra, places Debangg in the league of the 1970s trend of action-packed entertainers and said, “All Amitabh Bachchan starrers like Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqaddar Ka Sikander and Sholay were films that had huge action packed with loads of entertainment,” predicting that Debangg will revive that era. The songs from Dabangg also have been a major hit. The soundtrack of the film was composed by the music director duo of Sajid-Wajid and Lalit Pandit and the lyrics by Faiz Anwa. In August 2010, the song “Tere Mast Do Nain”, as performed by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, reached Number one on the Official Asian Download Chart in the UK based on legal downloads. Other hit songs include, “Munni Badnaam,” “Sachi Sachi” and “Hud Hud Dabangg.” Watch the video trailer of the huge hit song ‘Tere Mast Mast Do Nain’: < type=text/java>jwplayer("jwplayer-2").setup({flashplayer: "http://www.desiblitz.com/wp-content/uploads/jw-player-plugin-for-wordpress/player/player.swf", width: "570", height: "348", "file": "http://www.youtube.com/v/6SyTi2vcLnA", "image": "http://img.youtube.com/vi/6SyTi2vcLnA/0.jpg", "controlbar": "bottom", config: "http://www.desiblitz.com/wp-content/uploads/jw-player-plugin-for-wordpress/configs/desiblitz.xml"});> Dhilin Mehta, CEO of Shree Ashtavinayak – the financial producers of Dabangg said, “The opening day collections are tremendous. We have surpassed the collections, which were there as far as the previous films are concerned—the blockbusters films. We were on the money on the first day itself and whatever upsides we are adding to the revenues as well as the bottom-line.”
The movie has definitely been a hit with Indian audiences who have liked the film for its more ‘traditional’ Bollywood flavour and masala touch. Suniel Wadhwa, distributor of the film said, “Dabangg’s first-week net box-office collection is the highest ever figure for an opening week. It has surpassed all major circuit business, leaving 3 Idiots behind with big margins in Delhi, UP, east Punjab and Rajasthan.” Dabangg may well be the movie that was needed by Bollywood to resurrect audiences that are still very much interested in family, masala action and hero orientated films. Possibly giving Bollywood a path away from just producing very modern films with perhaps too much westernised content. So, if you want a taste of ‘real’ Bollywood, Debangg should be one to watch.

Re: Salman Khan Is Always Salman Khan.
Over the last few years, the Khans have each taken up a particular festive weekend, and made it their own. Aamir Khan, for example, has cornered the market on Christmas -- after hits like Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and Three Idiots -- while Shah Rukh Khan likes coming to our screens every Diwali. And while Diwali was always a big weekend for Bollywood films, Salman Khan has actually made Eid releases important, largely starting with Wanted in 2009.
Here's a look at how he has slowly and surely made a dent into the Eid market and given fans something to rejoice about. Image: Salman Khan in Wanted

Bodyguard: Movie Review Gaurav Malani, TNN Aug 31, 2011, 07.15pm ISTTags:Siddique|Salman Khan
While it's no guarded secret that Salman Khan's Bodyguard is remake of a South film, what many might not know is that it also liberally borrows its love story from Aamir Khan's Ghajini and climax from Shah Rukh Khan's Kuch Kuch Hota Hain .
So you have Lovely Singh (Salman Khan) as the newly-appointed hot-n-happening bodyguard of Divya (Kareena Kapoor) who follows her everywhere from classroom till bedroom. To divert him from duty, Divya starts flirting with Lovely on phone posing as an anonymous caller. Until she expectedly falls in love with him!
