  Shaan

Profession: Playback Singer, Bollywood.
Family: Wife

This long haired sensation made his appearance in the song 'Q - Funk' from the album 'Oorja'He burst into the pop scene with sis Sagarika, powered by pop-guru Biddu’s melodies and doing re-mixes. Shaan, the 'oh cho chweet' pop-star, has been wooing the audiences since he stepped into Indian Music industry. He launched 'Loveology' and gave everyone a well received lesson in the arts of lurrvee...

The track from his second album Tanha Dil, "Bhool Ja", which is an excellent ballad with superb lyrics written by the man himself! "Tanha Dil" catapulted to the charts within days of its release and was very popular on radio! "Dil Kya Kare," is a remix that caught everyone's eye thanks to its electrifying video and soothing melodies. "Mana Janab," is a fun and frolicky blast from the past that Shaan livens up with a latino groove. Induced with lots of emotional and groovy tracks, the album popped up the singer’s star rating, market value and of course ambitions.

He did a bit role in a Kalpana Lajmi film – Daman and the breakthrough happened not in the medium he started his career with, but in the mother of all commercial singing in India – Playback."Musu Musu" from the film Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi won him several offers from leading music directors like Anu Malik, A. R. Rahman while "Woh Pehli Baar" won the budding singer a lot of fans.Shaan took on an altogether different route when remixes became the order of the day. He remixed "Hum Bewafa" and the R D Burman "Roop Inka Mastana". After the success of Koi… Mil Gaya (where he sang In panchhiyon) Shaan got films like Zameen, Inteha and Sssshhh… lined up. “Film music, though, has its limitations – you have to sing the way the composer conceptualises. In an album you can experiment,” he says.

He’s excited about singing an item number with Asha Bhonsle in Bewafa. “She’s been my icon for ages. She has reinvented herself with the changing times,” he sums up.

Shaan loves to sing in English too. “Singing in Mumbai Matinee and Valentine’s Day gave me confidence. I have no training in classical music but I can pull off a semi-classical bandish,” says Shaan, who’s also planning to do fusion with alaaps on the chartbuster Koi kahe number (Dil Chahta Hai).

From an aspiring desk – top publisher to a pop singer Shaan surely has come a long way. He is currently host the show 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa' on Star Plus that hunts for young talent. Keen to pursue their solo careers at the moment, there are,

Shaan (singer)

Shaan, real name Shantanu Mukherjee (Bengali: শান্তনু মুখার্জি), is a popular Bengali Indian singer.

Personal life

Shaan is the son of the late music director Manas Mukherjee and brother of singer Sagarika. He is married to Radhika and has two sons, Soham and Shubh. He is the grandson of Jahar Mukherjee.

Career

As a child, Shaan began his career by singing ad jingles. After giving it up for a brief period, he soon returned to it, and also began to sing remixes and cover versions. In the 1987 movie Parinda, when he was only 15 years of age, Shaan sang a singular line in the song, Kitni Pyari Hai Dosti Hamari.

His career began in 1995 with his first release, the remix album called Q-funk. However, he first achieved real success with Roop Tera Mastana, a remixed version of R D Burman's hits. In 1996, Shaan and his sister, Sagarika came out with Naujawan, their first big release. The album received a positive response from the public. Later in 1996 Shaan went solo with an album called Love-o-logy, which did not achieve similar success.

After creating the album Tanha Dil, released in 2000, containing a mix of ballads and tunes, Shaan's career skyrocketed. The album established him as a distinctive and talented singer, as well as winning him the MTV Music Awards Asia, Best Solo Album award. Three years later Shaan launched his album Aksar which was again hugely successful. The album contained songs featuring international stars such as Blue, Mel C. and Samira Said. For both the albums Tanha Dil and Aksar, Shaan displayed his great talents by singing, composing and writing the lyrics of his songs. He plans to release an album remaking his father's compositions with his sister.

Apart from his albums, Shaan has sung playback vocals for various Bollywood films, including Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi, Lakshya, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Hum Tum, Dhoom, Dus , Salaam Namaste, Don the Chase begins again and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. He currently hosts his own television show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, which won the Music Programme of the Year award at the Indian Telly Awards in 2003. At the same awards function, Shaan won Best TV Music Director, for creating the music of the Zee TV show, Lipstick, for friend, Goldie Behl.

He also appeared as the guest in the first episode of the new show Antakshari The Great Challenge which aired on 9th Feb 2007 on Star One.

Popular songs by Shaan include his first hit, "Musu Musu", as well as "Tanha Dil" and "Bhool Ja" from his albums and the very popular song "Dus Bahane". Recently he has released an album with MLTR namely "Take me to your heart", which is on his latest album entitled Tishnagi.

Along with singing, Shaan has also acted in the movie, Daman, also starring Raveena Tandon. He has made appearances in his songs in the movies, Zameen and Hungama.

Shaan is also a very popular choice for 'Pro Shows' which are conducted as a part of the cultural festivals of various colleges. Among the prominent cult festivals where he has performed live recently are Mood Indigo of IIT Bombay and Raagam of NIT Calicut.

Post Re: Shaan...Shantanu Mukherjee

Shaan prefers crooning to playback singing
Vibhuti Mehta

AWARD-winning Indipop singer Shantanu Mukherjee, aka Shaan, prefers to croon his own tunes than go in for playback singing.

Ask him the difference between playback singing and cutting a pop album, he says, "In playback singing, you are singing for somebody else and while singing you’ll have to keep the actor in mind on whom the song will be picturised. Playback singing helps broaden your abilities and explore the best in you since you’ll have to sing songs in different styles."

Dressed in trendy casual clothes with hair falling on his face, Shaan, who was in New Delhi recently for a music concert, talked to UNI sitting relaxed in the lobby of a hotel. A bevy of teenyboppers hung around in the background, occasionally interrupting the conversation with requests for autographs which he complied to with a flourish.

After one such interruption, he quickly returns to the topic, "Even when I sing for somebody else, I keep inserting words in the song without affecting its flow. But in a pop album I have full liberty to do things my way."

"That is the basic difference — in playback singing there are some guidelines and a framework which you have to adhere to while in a pop album you are free to do what you want. That is why I prefer private albums from crooning for films because then I am my own master," he added.

"I will have the full liberty but then I will also have the responsibilities which come with writing lyrics for songs, composing music and singing them. I can’t tolerate any kind of interference from any quarter. I will be 100 per cent committed to the album whereas I’ll not have much say in playback singing. It is the music director who’ll decide finally," Shaan said.

"But I think I am very lucky because all music directors I have worked with have given me a free hand to do my own thing. Like the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio. A.R. Rahman just gives you the music sheet and asks you to let go," he added.

Shaan has not got any formal training in music. "I feel what matters is that song should be sung to its full potential. It doesn’t matter whether you have received any formal training if you are able to tap the full potential of the song," he said.

And no one is complaining either because music runs in his genes. His father Manas Mukherjee had scored music for films like "Shayad" and "Albert Pinto ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai".

Starting his career by singing ad jingles, Shaan came into the limelight with Biddu’s "Roop Inka Mastana", a remixed version of R.D. Burman’s songs and featured various singers. Then came his first pop album "Naujawan" in 1996 with sister Sagarika which did not do too well.

However, 1996 was quite a busy year for him as his another album — his first solo —"Lovelogy" followed soon. After four years of hibernations and solitude, he delivered a hit with "Tanha Dil" in 2000 for which he recently won Screen Videocon’s Best Pop Album award.

"Tanha Dil" is very close to my heart may be because I have penned the lyrics for eight songs in the album. It is my baby and I feel very possessive about it. I think this is the best album I have made so for because I gave it the best I had," he said.

Shaan, who made his debut in playback singing with "Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi", has lent his voice to hit songs from a sweet romantic Musu musu... and Woh pehli baar... from "PMKK", Ghanan shanan... his is one of the six voices used in the song from "Lagaan", to a soulful Tune mujhe pehchana nahin.... from "Raju Chacha", to a peppy Koi kahe kehta rahe... and Woh ladki hai kahan.... from "Dil Chahta Hai".

In "Bas Itna Sa Khwaab Hai (BISKH), he dominates the credits with five songs, including Yeh hawain... in his kitty.

About his recent movie "Dil Chahta Hai", he says it was fun working with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. "I had great time working with them. They are so flexible in their approach towards work that you feel very comfortable."

About his future plans, Shaan says, "I am working on my next album which will hopefully be out in December this year. The name of the album hasn’t been finalised yet. But the album will feature 12 to 13 songs by seven to eight singers. I’ll pen the lyrics and compose music for the album. At this stage, I am in the process of selecting songs. After the songs are finalised, we’ll decide on the singers for the album."

"As far as playback singing is concerned. I have one song O rey kanchi... in Santosh Sivan’s ‘Asoka’ under the banner of Shah Rukh Khan’s Arclightz and Films. Then I have Deewana main ho gaya... in Sunny Deol’s home ‘Indian’, Main prem diwani hoon... with Anu Malik, and Vashu Bhagnani’s ‘Rehnaa Hai Tere Dil Mein’ and ‘Deewanapan’," he said.

Shaan, who has crooned for almost all young actors like Dino Morea, Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan and Abhishek Bachchan, dreams to reach great heights in the music industry and with a track record like his, he would be one to reckon with in the coming years. UNI

Post Re: Shaan...Shantanu Mukherjee

Music profile: Shaan

In search of meaningful music Singer Shaan comes from a musical family. His late father, Manas Mukherjee, was a music director while his sister Sagarika is a popular singer. Shaan is decidedly a singer who appeals to youth and his songs are geared towards younger audiences. It seems like he has been around forever but of course, he only made his debut in 1999 with ‘Musumusu hasi’ in Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi in 1999. He hit the spot with ‘Nikamma kiya iss dil ne’ from Kya Dil Ne Kahaa and after that there has been no looking back for Shantanu Mukherjee aka Shaan.Shaan (14K)

The music industry, according to Shaan, is moving from trend to trend these days. Unfortunately, most of them are just that - trends. He feels that it needs to slow down a bit to produce good quality music. Music companies seem to dominate with music directors under severe pressure. The demands are for music which is ‘in vogue’ and considering how producers and music companies pressurize music directors, they do extremely well, declares the singer. Songs seemed to be aimed at city audiences and the focus is only on giving a hit. How then, will there be any meaningful music? Good lyrics will never shine if the music is not meaningful. The singer says that it is about time the music industry woke up to these harsh realities.

The singer says this affected him. He gave good music in Tishnagi and again in Aksar. None of the soft, melodious songs ever got rave reviews. In an era when loud beats are the norm, softer music is being pushed away, he says. He also does not understand marketing gimmicks. He has never marketed his CDs and extensive promos are not his forte. Many albums are often hyped to unnecessary levels and even if they are not hits, he says that the publicity campaign claims they are! He confesses that he still does not have a PR Manager and does not feel the need for one. Talent should speak for itself. He also never goes out of his way to call music directors, not even those who are his friends. If they need him, they will call.

Of course, these trends do affect him because he is a playback singer. According to him, he is an old-fashioned singer who believes that certain singers suit certain actors. In those days, actors had very specific requests as to which singer would render their numbers. Think Rajesh Khanna who insisted on Kishore Kumar. These days, though, any singer sings for any actor and the results are deplorable. A deep-voiced actor singing in a thin voice? The tragedy! And more such tragedies are happening, he says. The diction and the melody too, are not paid attention to.

Still, Shaan is in an enviable position. His numbers appeal to youth and the singer courts younger audiences. When talking to him, though, one realizes how much he really respects the old-timers and their evergreen numbers. He hopes that more people will take the time to enjoy the songs of great singers like a Mohammad Rafi or a Kishore Kumar. Not many, he says, understand that film music owes them a great debt and that their songs shaped the future of music in Hindi films. The media is also responsible to a certain extent for promoting only certain artistes or composers but that is infinitely better than the cacophony that is being promoted as popular music today. Shaan himself has been singing old songs in his shows. He loves those numbers and feels that they are far superior to 'modern music'.

He recently won the Hero Honda Star-Screen Award for Chand sifarish from Fanaa so he must be doing something right. He hopes that more knowledgeable individuals will decided the fate of the music of a film rather than giving in to the whims of a particular actor. He certainly hopes to get better songs now that he has a prestigious award in his pocket but also makes it clear that he has never chased awards in his entire career. Good music by a big banner is his dream because big banners promote their music far better than a smaller banner would. Trends or no trends, singers like Shaan are here to stay and continue to enthrall audiences.

Whining with Shaan

i wanna fly, too! Shaan and Radhika
We’re told that singer-composer Shaan has a huge passion for adventure sports, for recently, he went with his wife Radhika for a spot of paragliding to Kamshet.

However, a source reveals that our man was quite upset about the whole thing and wouldn’t stop whining through the day.

The reason? He didn’t get enough time in the air as opposed to his wife!
Tee hee!

SHAAN
STRAIGHT SPEAK
screen More than the genetic inclination towards music, Shaan’s fame today rests on youth appeal and his vocal skills. Viju Shah, who first recorded him in Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat, stated then that Shaan is one of the fastest singers on the uptake and makes value-added contributions to a song.

Shantanu Mukherjee, or Shaan as he is known to the world, is a second-generation artiste in the film industry - his father, the late Manas Mukherjee, had been a music director, even as Shaan’s sister Sagarika is also well-known as a singer.
But more than the genetic inclination towards music, Shaan’s fame today rests on youth appeal and his vocal skills. Viju Shah, who first recorded him in Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat, stated then that Shaan is one of the fastest singers on the uptake and makes value-added contributions to a song.
The singer made his debut with ‘Musumusu hasi’ from Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi in 1999, though it was ‘Nikamma kiya iss dil ne’ from Kya Dil Ne Kahaa that really got his career going.
The winner of the Hero Honda Star-Screen Award for ‘Chand sifarish’ from Fanaa is also a family man, with no controversies or affairs to his name. When we meet up at his residence on a Saturday evening, he is squatting on the floor, playing with his kids Soham and Shubh on one of his rare ‘off’ days. He has to leave at six - his sons have to be taken to a park by daddy - so the interview must be over by then. We quickly move to his music room. Excerpts follow.

It’s been nine years in the field. Where do you see yourself?

Earlier, I had never felt that I had missed out on awards, though my first-ever award was from Screen for my album Tanha Dil that released in 2000. But this award has been a turning point in my career.

Could you elaborate on that?

Well, I really had not realized how important it was till I was swamped by congratulatory messages from my fraternity. I was used to my songs from films becoming hits, from ‘Koi kahen’ and ‘Woh ladki hai kahaan’ from Dil Chahta Hai to ‘Dus bahaane’ for which KK and I were jointly nominated for the Screen Playback Singer award last year. The song that really got my career moving was ‘Nikamma kiya’ from Kya Dil Ne Kahaa, which got epidimic popularity and set a new tone for songs in Hindi cinema, but even that did not get me the kind of new respect that ‘Chand sifarish’ got me. So as a song it really sticks out among my work, and as I said when I was nominated and after I won, everyone had told me that this was not just a great song but the kind that was award-worthy.

Who else among the nominees did you yourself rate high, in the sense that though you had hoped to win, you saw a possibility that another singer could have snatched the trophy instead?
I think that all of them were good. But I also feel that the overall impact works more, and that if you justify the calibre of the song you have a higher chance of winning. I think that singing se zyaada the awards are dependent on the song itself. Like Sonu Nigam was nominated for ‘Bawari piya ki’ - now that is a singer’s song because it is a semi-classical number, and I am sure that uss safai ke saath I could not have sung it. Agar mushkil gaana gaane ke liye award diya jaata then Sonu would have won it. But the overall package worked in favour of ‘Chand sifarish’.

Speaking of this, isn’t it true that none of the songs that we hear today are recorded live but are ‘assembled’ vocals from digital recordings? Would you say that this can be a valid reason for stopping all awards in the Singer category?

I do not think so at all. In that case all actors’ awards should also be abolished as they give retakes and only the best shots are retained! I feel that agar mehnat karke koi bhi gaana dil tak pahunchta hai then it deserves a pat. What is the point if someone has worked hard on something that fails to connect with the audience or listener?

You said that you were flooded with congratulatory messages. Did you get calls from the other nominees?

Zubeen Garg congratulated me at the show itself. And among the SMS-es there was one that from the language was almost certainly from KK. The trouble is that most people send messages assuming that you will remember their numbers! A name at the end woul help matters!!

Have the kind of songs you are now getting improved?

I think that will take some time to happen, it’s too soon now after the awards to start getting that result. But I definitely realize that I am on a slightly higher level. For example, I was doing a show in West Bengal last week where the guest of honour was a Member of Parliament. After the show’s anchor had finished with my introduction, the MP grabbed the microphone and told the audience that my introduction wasn’t complete, and added that I had just won the prestigious Screen award!

Has all this increased your desire or any kind of lust for awards from now on?

I think that I completely lack the ‘lust’ element! Waisi bhook mujh mein kabhi bhi nahi thi. I am just happy that log bulaate hain. I also do my shows and my albums. In 2006, I also had popular songs in Don - the title-track - and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Even one or two songs in Jaana - Let’s Fall In Love were quite well-known. I just hope now that I am called more by big banners too, because then the song is well-promoted.

You have been very reticent about hype, PR etc.
Yeah, I am like that. I get so many calls asking me whether they could be my PR managers! But I do not understand why I should do that. I never even call music directors, not even Salim-Sulaiman or Pritam, who are more of friends really. It would be embarrassing for me to say something like, “Mujhe bhi yaad kijiye, sir!” and they would be bound to say “Zaroor yaad karenge” and then not call at all! The message would be embarassingly loud and clear! I think that it is very simple - if they feel the need for me, they will call!

How do you see the music scene today?

It is too dynamic - we are moving from trend to trend very rapidly. That makes me realize that a solid song like ‘Chand sifarish’ will not happen very soon!

Are today’s music directors under-equipped to give good music or are they good men working under undue pressures?

They are our saving graces, but under undue pressures, definitely. I think that what they are doing today despite the odds is really impressive. The hold of the music companies has increased and trends are driven by business insecurities. Making a regular good song is difficult - every song is gimmicky and in some way targeted at the metro-centric audience because that’s where most of the business is. No one is catering to songs for the rest of the country. No songs are situational and the challenge is only to give the next audio hit. Lyrics are not given importance at all. Even the few good lyrics are not given the respect due to them. We even have hook-lines repeated again and again, the way it would happen only with ad jingles so that the product’s name would sink in! That is how a song makes a mark today!

Does this rankle you?

It does - in different ways. My last two albums are examples: in Tishnagi I gave a soul-searching number in the era of ‘item’ songs and remixes, and it boomeranged. I gave a soft number in Aksar during the time of pounding beats and that went unnoticed too! I now realize that I did not create the hype by marketing. I did not even buy back my own CDs to show higher sales!

As a playback singer, does all this affect you?

It does, because finally I am a playback singer. My thoughts in this respect are a bit old-school - but I think that there must be some logical connection between a voice and an actor! I know that the days when a Shammi Kapoor would want only a Mohammed Rafi or a Rajesh Khanna would insist on Kishore Kumar are gone, but you cannot have a thin voice for a star’s baritone, or a deep voice for a thin-voiced actor. These cases would be exceptions before, but now they are happening too frequently! Another sore point is the diction - words are pronounced in a wrong manner and are passed because no one gives importance to Hindi and Urdu diction!

You are in a vantage position to be objective - you have a hep, even Western image, but you have interacted with old-timers on your TV show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and observed how old songs are predominant in talent competitions and antaksharis.

Even there the ratio has changed - if you watch today’s shows there is a complete swing, and 80% of the songs are new. I do not agree with the observation that all this is a passing phase. I do not see a revival but only the beginning of the end! Today, there are people who have never heard of the giants in music. I have personally been witness to an incident where a fan of mine did not recognize one of our veteran singers who is an institution and condescendingly said that she could pose with me for a keepsake photograph because she saw me and came over to greet me! It was not only terribly insulting but a portent of what is to come - like I said, I see this as the beginning of the end!

Maybe the media is responsible as only specific old artistes, composers and songs are being promoted.

That’s possible, but the fact remains that these are now being closeted under the label of ‘Retro’! I have seen 40-plus NRIs addressing me as ‘Bro’, touching my feet at the same time (!) and saying that they listen to only new songs!

But haven’t you been singing old songs on your shows?
I have - and you know what? I find them easier to sing. This is because they have proper gaps for breathing, and a proper beat structure. The programming done today joins phrases that are humanly impossible to reproduce vocally !

What would be the last straw?
I am not sure if it hasn’t already come. We have heard of musically-conscious or knowledgeable actors having a say in the songs in the past, like Rajesh Khanna again. Today, music directors talk of actors telling them, “I am tone-deaf, but I don’t like the song, give me something else!”

Post Re: Shaan...Shantanu Mukherjee

Shaan is a natural, born singer

Monika Adlakha

February 8, 2007

It took several odd jobs for Shaan to realise what he was meant to do. Call it a process of elimination for arriving at the real truth.

“I’m a singer by default. Looking back, I don’t think many around me would have believed that I could make it. Besides doing all kinds of odd jobs, I used to accompany Sagarika to her recordings and was sometimes offered a line or two. Rest is history,” says Shaan.

The singer, who is deluged by acting offers these days, says, “I would love to act, provided I get an exciting role. I keep getting offers but nothing worthwhile considering as yet. I’m planning my next album and a video with Sagarika is also on the to-do list.”

Seven years in the industry and Shaan is still simple and affable. “That’s the way I am. Even now when I go for recordings I scribble my notes on scraps of paper. I don’t have fancy letterheads, or a song diary and I still can’t grasp the business aspects of the industry .”

Shaan has only one regret. His numbers, like his adaptation of international pop group Michael Learns To Rock’s Take me to your heart and the Blues track One love didn’t fetch him the desired response. But now that his contract is over with the music company, the singer wants to be a part of the big league. Way to go!

Shaan is one of the fastest singer
By MIO Team

Shantanu Mukherjee, or Shaan as he is known to the world, is a second-generation artiste in the film industry - his father, the late Manas Mukherjee, had been a music director, even as Shaan’s sister Sagarika is also well known as a singer. But more than the genetic inclination towards music, Shaan’s fame today rests on youth appeal and his vocal skills. Viju Shah, who first recorded him in ‘Pyar Ishq Aur Mohabbat’, stated then that Shaan is one of the fastest singers on the uptake and makes value-added contributions to a song
The singer made his debut with ‘Musumusu hasi’ from Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi in 1999, though it was ‘Nikamma kiya iss dil ne’ from Kya Dil Ne Kahaa that really got his career going.

The winner of the Hero Honda Star-Screen Award for ‘Chand sifarish’ from Fanaa is also a family man, with no controversies or affairs to his name, busy with his kids Soham and Shubh. Being in the industry for nine years now Shaan has a number of hits to boast of and is going from strength to strength.

ShaanShaan moves with Gajendra Singh!

Rajeev Paul, telly actor and also Delnaaz Paul's husband, has undergone eye surgery a fortnight ago to correct his poor vision.

Shaan will be moving along with the producer of Zee's Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Gajendra Siingh, to host Star Voice of India-Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa (SVOI) on STAR Plus.

Shaan says: "They (Zee TV) were keen to continue with me, but I wanted to be loyal to Gajendra. As he was the one who helped me to get into this profession and position. It was Gajendra who approached me and not the channel. There is nothing like fall out or bad weather between me and Zee. I'm always going to be grateful to Zee for giving me world wide popularity because of this show."

Star Voice of India-Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni SaStar Voice of India-Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa (SVOI), a musical reality show
, is starting next week with its auditions. The first round of auditions will start from Kolkatta on 29 April and after that it will be held in five other cities. The uniqueness of this show is that the elimination of contestants will start from auditions and that will be broadcast for viewers to watch.

"All these reality shows provide a platform and recognition for talented people. Hard Work
is the only thing that can make anyone a good singer and nothing else. They need to prove themselves to be in this music industry. Two to three musical reality shows are happening every year on television, but the music industry can only absorb few of them. At this moment the music industry is ruled by only handful of people. If this programme was there during my days of struggle then it would have only provided me with a platform. It would have provided me that push which I would have required at that time. But for my further progress I would need to work hard to shape my career. I would need to put in true efforts to achieve my goals."

Hosting does not come naturally to this singer…
"Hosting is surely difficult. You can be natural singer but not a natural host. Singing is natural; it can make you hero out of zero. Hosting is definitely not natural so it is difficult. With hosting you can learn from experience and proper guidance. If four people come together they will have different opinions on the same issues. It is very normal. We are human beings so we tend to have different views. We are not robots who can behave the same with everyone. As far as our show is concerned arguments are generally based on music. Parents of contestants and judges are not
actors so we can't give them dialogues. This show is not like Bigg Boss or Big Brother where five actors stay in a same house and read certain lines and behave in certain way to some people. In this type of reality show either you can sing or you cannot sing. You can't trigger it. In our show arguments take place in front of 500 people. So there is no scope for any fakeness."

The selection process starts from next week
"We will start auditions from next week. I'll be present there during every audition
. We'll be conducting auditions in six prime cities. In these cities we'll select 12-15 contestants. Out of which we'll select five from every single city and then final competition will be among 30 contestants. The elimination of contestants will start from audition level where we'll select 15 contestants. This will be the first time that viewer's can watch auditions and from that they will be more involved in the competition. In mid May the actual competition between 30 finalists will start."

Alka Yanik, Aadesh Srivastav, Abhijit Bhattacharya and Jatin-Lalit will be judging the contestants. Gajendra Siingh's production house Saibaba Telefilms is producing this show. On the other hand Zee TV is also soon coming up with their musical reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, which will be hosted by Marathi Sa Re Ga Ma Pa's winner Abhijit Kosambi. Himesh Reshammiya, Ismail Darbar, Bappi Lahiri and Vishal-Shekar are going to head the judge's panel.

Stepping into Shaan's shoes;
Aditya or Babul?

The Zee-Star war is officially out in the open; Shaan quit anchoring Sa Re Ga Ma Pa to join a panel of judges on Star's Voice of India Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa. The most obvious question now is; who will step into Shaan's shoes?

The buzz goes that Zee has approached Babul of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai fame and Aditya Narayan of Rangeela fame. The first is a seasoned singer with a couple of albums to his credit and the other is a novice with a promising future.

"We are talking to various singers, Babul, Aditya Narayan and Adarsh (a new name), we have not finalised as yet," reveals Ashish Kaul, Senior Vice President Zee Telefilms.

So, with the hunt for a new anchor on, will the format change with innovative changes? "The format will essentially remain the same, but we're trying to always spice it up and the show will be innovative," says Kaul.

Season two has head for a change in judges as the previous scholars of music industry have been lured by Star. The new panel will have the Rock-RnB Hip Hop -Bollywood specialists Vishal and Shekar; the eternal nasal voice of mass appeal Himesh Reshamiya, the legend of melody Ismail Darbar and the man in gold Bapphi Lahiri.

Babul, who had just returned from Calcutta, confirmed, "Yes, I have been approached for the show, but we have not signed it. We've been on talks for a while now."

Well, Aditya Narayan, on the other hand did not sound so decisive, "Yes I have been approached for the show; however the decision has to be taken as yet. I might do it or I might not!"

Why the uncertainty? "Well, because, TV takes up a lot of time and I have still a year of studies to finish. I want to practice on my classical music as well." There's a bright side to it though; won't it work like a launch pad? "Yes, of course it will change a lot of things, it's a brilliant opportunity." However, his tone is significant that he doesn't want to be stuck with TV. So, is he pursuing acting, he laughs "Yes, I love acting but music is my first love, I am looking forward to doing both."

As the real story unfolds, we're putting our bets on Aditya Narayan since he's young and charming, though Babul is a seasoned and experienced singer. Aditya would also appeal to the audience as a new face on the small screen and can definitely pool in young audiences' to watch the show.

A jog down the memory lane shows a similar strategy that was followed for Sonu Nigam and Shaan in the past. Let's us hope that the new anchor Zee chooses breathes new life into the show.

Shaan steals the show

Talking to the The Hindu on his way to the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-C) on Friday evening, Shaan sounded a bit apprehensive. He had a bad cold and a bad throat. "I never knew how I would be if I had a nasal voice. I guess I will find out that tonight," he said.

He absolutely rocked on stage at NIT-C as he presented what was easily a fine live music show. "This was certainly one of my best shows of late," he said over telephone later, just hours before catching a flight to Pune, for another show. "The full credit goes to the great crowd. I am quite happy that my bad cold did not trouble me at all." The evening's programme, part of NIT-C's annual cultural festival Ragam, had got off with Chhavi belting out a couple of immensely popular Sunidhi Chouhan numbers, including `Beedi... ' (Omkara) and `Crazy kiya re... ' (Dhoom 2).

Shaan, singing the Don song, articulated a couple Shah Rukh Khan dialogues. After `Main hoon Don... ,' he moved to songs like `Sunona... ' (Jhankar Beats), `My dil goes mmmm... ' (Salaam Namaste), `Musu musu... ' (Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi) before singing `Chand sifarish... ' (Fanaa), for which he won the Filmfare award and the loudest cheers.

`Woh ladki hai kahan... ' (Dil Chahta Hai), during the rendering of which Chhavi and Shaan did a jig choreographed by Farah Khan originally for Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Kulkarni, enthralled the crowds.

The other songs were were `Nikamma... ' (Kya Dil Ne Kaha), `Dus bahane...' (Dus) and `It's the time to disco... ' (Kal Ho Na Ho). He also sprung a surprise by rendering Bryan Adams's immortal `Summer of 69.'

 A full-scale campaign

Ranjib Mazumder

After Antakshari, Star is coming up with a new show, Star Voice of India — Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa, Sargam Ab Puri Hogi, on the lines of Zee TV's already existing Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. And no points for guessing, the show on Star will be produced by none other than Gajendra Singh (the creator of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee).

Shaan will host Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa

The show, to be hosted by Shaan, will be aired on Star Plus in the primetime slot and promises to be different from the one on Zee TV. According to Gajendra Singh, the format of the new show will be entirely different from his earlier show. He says, "This time, we are going to do ground events in different cities of India with local judges. We are going to select a few singers after the auditions and take them to Mumbai. These kids will then be trained by musical gurus and industry bigwigs."

But, doesn't it sound similar to shows like Voice of India on Zee and Fame Gurukul on Sony? "I can't comment on other shows. But, my show will definitely bring in a new twist in the genre of Indian reality music. The show on Zee TV was also conceptualised by me. I am only taking my idea forward to another channel now," he adds.

Incidentally, Antakshari on Star is not doing well compared to Zee as far as TRPs are concerned. Moreover, Zee is also coming up with its new season of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. So, how confident is Gajendra about Star Voice of India? "I can't comment on Zee's show but undoubtedly our Antakshari is doing great. Our Voice of India will be a different take on music altogether," he says.

Gajendra Singh

Interestingly, the new show boasts of names like Aadesh Srivastava, Jatin and Lalit, Abhijeet and Alka Yagnik as judges on the show. But if one recalls, last time, Gajendra had a huge fight with Abhijeet on the sets of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee. To this Gajendra says, "Sometimes, when we work under severe time constraints, conflicts are bound to take place. But we share a good rapport now and that's the reason he is in the show. And Shaan is the only host I could think of," says Gajendra.

Who will be the next anchor?
April 17, 2007

ShaanThe erstwhile blue eyed boy of Zee TV, Gajendrra Singh has struck again with his own creation yet another time to prove his mettle on musical shows after 'Antakhshari', which is being telecast on Star One. Singh has announced 'Star Voice of India- Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa' as his new vehicle for Star Plus and as expected the team of judges remains the same as before on Zee. This time too the host is Shaan who was earlier speculated to be close to Zee. However, Zee which is yet to confirm its show's (Saregama) host and was banking on Shaan till date is suddenly taken aback by Singh's announcement of his team.

According to a spokesperson from the Zee, the channel has shortlisted three names for the host of 'Sa Re Ga Ma' but is yet to arrive on a decision for the final name. Sources close to the channel informs this correspondent that at present there are two front runners - Aditya Narayan, son of veteran playback singer Udit Narayan and another playback singer Babul Supriyo, for the coveted role.

Aditya Narayan with mom Deepa during his school DaysWhile a source close to Babul has confirmed the news of Zee approaching the singer for the anchor's job, Deepa Narayan, mother of Aditya Narayan has approved the query of this correspondent. Narayan says, "The show's director, Santosh Shinde had actually come to meet me to sign Aditya as 'Sa Re Ga Ma's' anchor and was very much determined for him."

The proud mother also praises her son and informs us that, 'Aditya has just returned after completing his graduation from UK and has successfully secured three distinctions in his western music course from the reputed Vocal Tech music school.' However Narayan states, "We have to think twice before landing any decision for our son's career. I hope by next month you will be informed about any such news."

After being successful with a new comer like Himani as 'Antakshari's anchor, Zee's strategists are very much keen for Aditya given his telegenic personality. He has already achieved success as a child playback singer as well as actor. As the show is also very much targeted towards young talent of the country Aditya's appeal may very much add to the channel's hope of getting successful again without the original creator of the popular show.
