 Re: Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)
By Rima Bhatia - BollySpice.com 9 Feb 2010 Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. What can you say about a jodi who is just 5 films old, yet one of the most bankable jodi’s in Hindi cinema? A jodi that has not yet delivered a box office dud. A jodi that has produced some of Bollywood's biggest hits - earning her three Filmfare Best Actress Awards and him three Filmfare Best Actor Awards.
To celebrate the return of this jodi to the silver screen after eight incredibly long years, BollySpice is all set to take you on a journey down memory lane to look at the magic that has been created by one of the industry’s favourite jodi’s.
Baazigar
Directed by: Abbas Mustan Produced by: Ganesh Jain Written by: Robin Bhatt, Akash Khurana, Javed Siddiqui Music by: Anu Malik Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Shilpa Shetty, Rakhee, Dalip Tahil, Anant Mahadevan, Siddharth, Johnny Lever
Release date: 12 November 1993
Baazigar was the film that launched the Kajol – Shah Rukh Jodi. Based on Ira Levin's 1953 novel "A Kiss Before Dying", Baazigar is a contemporary thriller about a young man on revenge fueled mission - a man who will stop at nothing to make sure he gets what he wants. Starting of as a simple romantic film, what follows is anything but what is expected. The storyline in typical Abbas-Mastan style is focused and cohesive throughout, with attention paid to detail.
Baazigar was Shah Rukh’s first film as the sole lead as well as the first film in which he played a negative role. Although a departure from the formula, Shah Rukh received positive reviews and a lot of critical acclaim from the success of the film.
Baazigar was Kajol’s first taste of commercial success. Though Baazigar was her second film, her chemistry on screen with Khan was evident and a sure sign of good things to come.
When Baazigar was released, the Indian audience was shocked with the unexpected shake–up of the standard Hindi formula - the murder of the innocent heroine (Shilpa Shetty) at the hands of the hero (Shah Rukh Khan). It was a formula that worked for Shah Rukh, shooting him to prominence overnight.
Abbas-Mustan and good music go hand in hand. For Baazigar, they turned to Anu Maliik and it was a good idea. It was the soundtrack to this film that shot them into the spotlight. Filled with a variety of love songs, the soundtrack went on to become one of Anu Malik’s biggest hits.
Baazigar also proved one more thing. It showed that a group of lyricists and one composer could come up with a great deal of variety that is good. Full of melodious tracks, the soundtrack is a great listen for anyone looking for good music even today.
Karan Arjun
Directed by: Rakesh Roshan Produced by: Rakesh Roshan Written by: Sachin Bhowmick Ravi Kapoor Anwar Khan Music by: Rajesh Roshan Starring: Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Raakhee Gulzar, Kajol, Mamta Kulkarni
Release date: 13 January 1995
This 1995 Roshan offering was a drama that had a little bit of everything. It paired Shakrukh Khan in his avatar as a stable boy with Salman Khan as a muscle bound bare knuckle fighter as a pair of brothers who fought for their inheritance in this story of reincarnation.
But that is not what we are looking at here. Karan Arjun, though a story about two brothers, was another hit for the Shah Rukh-Kajol jodi.
Though the jodi was only a film old, the comfort level between the two was already evident. Shah Rukh had already given 6 hits, won a Filmfare Award and become a household name. Kajol was four films old and had provided a hit in the Sabrina remake, Yeh Dillagi, at the time of Karan Arjun's release.
The chemistry between the two was magical, even though they didn’t share that much screen time together what with all the vengeance fueled fighting that took place.
The music of the film was good. Rajesh Roshan tends to always save his best music for his brother and that continues to happen till date. The policy of keeping it in the family applies, I guess. The music of this film had a number of melodious hit numbers, like Lata Mangeshkar’s 'Ek Munda' and the Mamta Kulkarni’s item number 'Gup Chup'. However, the number I think most people will remember apart from 'Yeh Bandhan Toh' is Shah Rukh and Kajol’s 'Jhatti Houn Main', which I can’t imagine working as well with any other jodi…
Dilwale Dulhanyia Le Jayengaye
Directed by: Aditya Chopra Produced by: Yash Chopra Written by: Aditya Chopra Javed Siddique Music by: Jatin-Lalit Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Amrish Puri, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal
Release date: 20 October 1995
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The film that cemented the magic of this jodi. The chemistry between the lead pair in this film was something that would find them being cast again and again opposite each other. The two film old jodi now did not have very high expectations to meet from the audience, which in a way acted to their advantage.
Kajol and Shah Rukh are superb to watch. The chemistry they exude feels that it will last for a long time. DDLJ worked largely because of Shah Rukh and Kajol understanding that the script of the film that they were working on was based solely on the romance of the two young characters they were playing. Their scenes together and the build up to their romance are what take up most of the film, and the way it is handled and portrayed is what makes it even more magical. Had there not been the magic of their pairing, the film would have probably turned out to be different from the way we now know it.
This is why Shah Rukh and Kajol will forever be known as Raj and Simran, which is probably why we will see the film celebrating 1000 weeks in the future.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Directed by: Karan Johar Produced by: Yash Johar Written by: Karan Johar Music by: Jatin-Lalit Starring: Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerjee, Farida Jalal, Reema Lagoo, Salman Khan, Anupam Kher
Release date: October 16, 1998
Written and directed by the debutant Karan Johar, KKHH was the trio’s first venture together, though it was the fourth outing for on-screen pair Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Rani Mukerji bagged a role that was originally offered to Twinkle Khanna, Tabu, Shilpa Shetty, Urmila Matondkar, Aishwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor. Saif Ali Khan was offered the role of Aman Mehra, but he turned it down and it was essayed by Salman Khan.
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is a film with a very simple message. Widower Remarriage - though it is pure escapist cinema at its best. The story is novel yet presented in a simple manner which looks at human relationships - a trademark of the Karan Johar Style.
Looking at the performances, Kajol was simply brilliant as the gawky, outspoken tomboy who transforms herself into the demure, sexy siren. Shah Rukh is Shah Rukh. His performance is heartbreakingly honest at times, and at times he hams it up, but isn't that why we love him? It must be noted, however, that the Shah Rukh and Kajol define chemistry in this film having already established it in DDLJ.
KKHH is the second film to win the 4 major awards (Best Movie, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress) at the Filmfare Awards, and I don’t think that would have been possible without the Kajol–Shah Rukh pairing.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham
Directed by: Karan Johar Produced by: Karan Johar Written by: Karan Johar Music by: Jatin–Lalit, Aadesh Shrivastav, Sandesh Shandilya Starring: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Rani Mukerjee, Farida Jalal, Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor
Release date: 14 December 2001
Karan Johar’s second offering Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham was the highest grossing Indian film overseas till 2006, when its record was broken by Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. The film brought back the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai cast comprising of Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji.
K3G is another Johar film that revolves around human relationships. Yash (Amitabh) and Nandini (Jaya) have raised their children, Rohan a.k.a. Ladoo (a young Hrithik Roshan) and Rahul (Shah Rukh) who was adopted when he was younger with a lot of love. Circumstances intervene and Shah Rukh falls in love with the wrong girl, Anjali (Kajol), a peppy girl from Chandni Chowk. Exasperated at his audaciousness, Yash is torn that Rahul refuses to marry Naina (Rani Mukherji), a person Yash feels is of much better class than Anjali. Yash and Rahul part ways unaware of the pain they have caused all of the others in their loving family. Come post-interval a changed and grown Rohan and a promiscuous Pooja (Kareena Kapoor), Anjali’s sister, who join forces to bring together Rohan’s torn family in the name of Yash’s dying mother, played by Achla Sachdev.
Released three years after KKHH, the audience had high expectations from the Kajol-Shah Rukh pairing. Though the chemistry was evident, to think that this was going to be another DDLJ would be a mistake. Kajol as Anjali and SRK as Rahul are perfectly cast. Kajol’s punjabi accent is commendable, and her well balanced act between comedy and emotion strikes a chord with the viewer.
Dharma Productions managed to deliver on its promise of giving us a lovable film for us to remember in coming times.
Which is why I guess there is so much pressure on Karan Johar to deliver a film that is nothing short of excellent. May Name is Khan is one of the most awaited films of the year. Not because it is another SRK film or because it is a Karan Johar film. It is because it has been eight years since the last SRK–Kajol release. He is giving the audience an opportunity to see the much loved jodi in action after such a long time.
Lets hope that My Name Is Khan adds another hit to this jodi’S*** list. And we don’t have to wait long! With the film releasing on the 12th of this month, I know where I am going to be…

 Re: Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)
Shahrukh Khan's men off to a dream start Monday, March 15, 2010, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan must be pulling a wide smile to himself, as his Indian Premiere League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has taken off to a dream start in IPL 3. His team has won the two matches played so far. KKR, which was at the bottom of the table last year, bounced back in style by beating the champion and runners-up teams last year. Shahrukh's team defeated defending champion Deccan Chargers in the opening match. Proving that they are not 'one match wonder', they beat last year's runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore too.
Shahrukh must be happy that his team is in good form.

International pop stars lured by BollywoodLast updated on: March 10, 2010 17
Sukanya Verma in Mumbai Music speaks a universal lingo. Be it from any corner of the world, melody, beats and rhythm find a note to connect with one and all. Perhaps that's what tempts international singing sensations from across the border and seven seas or down under to do their bit in Bollywood. More often than not, it's been a successful collaboration. Inspired by this promising statistic, actor-producer Shah Rukh Khan has roped in American R&B singer/songwriter Akon to work his magic in the upcoming superhero fantasy, Ra.One. A grand-scale SFX adventure, the Red Chillies production directed by Anubhav Sinha (Tum Bin, Dus, Cash) features Kareena Kapoor as SRK's leading lady with composer duo Vishal-Shekhar pitching in to helm the soundtrack. The Grammy-nominated artist hit the popularity charts with zingy singles like Smack that (featuring Eminem) and I wanna love you, to name a few. After a warm welcome from SRK and Co, Akon enthusiastically stated, 'For Ra.One, I will be composing and singing a song. I will also appear in it. I want to give Shah Rukh different versions of the same song to choose from.' Before Akon, a considerable number of artists have come forward to work on the Hindi music scene. Take a look: Image: Shah Rukh Khan and Akon

 Re: Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)
How to be a good father: SRKJune 18, 2010 King Khan weighs in on what it means to be a great dad. Since he is the face of Pepsodent toothpaste's 'Pappu and Papa' ad campaign, Shah Rukh Khan decided to give us his take on Father's Day in his own inimitable style: Someone said 'Any man can be a father but it takes time to be a dad'... and that someone was just right! Who is Dad? He's the mess-maker, rule-breaker, risk-taker and the opposite of Mom, who is usually seen as the creator and nurturer. But for all their mischief, dads are doing something quite right! I am happy to know that most of you have joined me in the 'Pappu and Papa' campaign and have made a move towards being the family man and spending quality time with your kids. Father's Day is our day, to celebrate 'being dad'. This day gives us the opportunity to show and express our love and care. It's an appropriate platform to look at our children and credit them for bringing joy and happiness. After all, a child gives birth to a father as well. But even though it's celebrated once a year, it's the ever-after effect of being a father that will keep us connected. A father's role means different things to different people, so I cannot do justice by trying to define it. But in the traditional way, we hold the role of being the head of the family, protector and role models to our children. We are definitely the more unpredictable lot with our kids. At times we may have rocked our kids more than their moms have and rolled on the floor foolishly to play. So moms and dads are indeed different. And we know we cannot be like the mothers, but we do know that we can make all the difference by being right there. I understand it's not easy but I appreciate the effort that's being put in by all fathers, as more and more fathers are becoming aware and taking their role and responsibility seriously and turning into great dads. For this moment, I dedicate a song for our special day, Will Smith's Just the Two of Us, which celebrates fatherhood And...dear dads, you can do more...Wish you a Happy Fathers Day!

 Re: Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)
This actor may be at an event or a party till the early hours of the morning. But if he is in town he almost always makes it a point to drop his kids to school. The busiest star in India who dons the hats of producer, actor, and entrepreneur simultaneously will rework his schedules at the eleventh hour and not hesitate to make even the bigwigs wait if he has to honour a commitment to his son or daughter. While Saif's kids are passionate about award functions, SRK's kids Aryan and Suhana love watching movies and TV shows. A few years ago SRK accompanied them to the sets of Jassi Jais Koi Nahi so that they could meet Jassi (Mona Singh) in person. And recently Shah Rukh personally called up Amitabh Bachchan and asked for extra passes to the Paa premiere as Aryan's friends were keen to attend the event. Amitabh of course being the perfect gentleman was only too happy too oblige. Image: Gauri Khan, Aryan, Shah Rukh Khan and Suhana

 Re: Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)
N Radhakrishnan, Editor and Publisher Man's World Favourite cover: Without a doubt, Shah Rukh Khan. He has been on our cover five times in the 125 or so issues that we have done over the last 10 years. He readily agreed to be our first cover in 2000 when the magazine was still on the drawing board and he was already a big star. He was on the cover of our 100th issue, and also on the recent 10th anniversary issue. So in a sense, he has been our lucky mascot. His cover photographs always reflect the tone of the story inside. The 10th anniversary cover, for example, was shot around the time when he took a firm stand on Shiv Sena's threat to My Name Is Khan. He is very professional. An issue with him on the cover always sells. Abhishek Bachchan is also a good seller even though he hasn't had that many successful films.
Star Fuss: From what photographers and stylists tell me, it varies from actor to actor. Some are more professional than others. Everyone wants to look good so they are generally cooperative. The bigger stars always insist on working with their favourite stylists, fashion designers and photographers because of their familiarity factor.

 Re: Shah Rukh Khan (SRK)
SRK is an angry man: Nasreen Diksha Kamra, TNN, Aug 7, 2010, Having chronicled the lives of many personalities, how does she decide which great personality to take up for a documentary or a book is determined largely by the “impact the person has had on people over a period of time.” In addition, she says that one does require a period of time to be able to know a person and to analyse his works. “If someone turns out to be a one-film or a few-films wonder, why will I spend my time on him?”
At the same time, she also believes that people and their impact — change with time. She explains, “You are not what you were yesterday. You change a bit everyday. I don’t say the core person inside you changes, but such is life that everyday-experiences, combined with the changes happening around us, brings in us a different person everyday.”
If that is so, Big B and SRK, to begin with, must have changed too — planning another documentary on them? She agreed with the idea, but said, “If I film another one right now, it will not have the right impact,” explaining the reason, “It was a few years ago, when people had less access to film stars, that such documentaries aroused interest and left an impact. But today, you see the film stars are seen so often, they are on television — doing advertisements, anchoring, they are just everywhere. For that matter, how much would one get to see AR Rahman earlier, as much as you get to see him now? It does make a difference. Also, there should be a healthy gap and I should wait for the right time, which will not arrive before 2015.
And next, whose life would she chronicle or capture under her lens? “I think Aamir has done some really great work. And, it will be interesting to make one on him,” said Kabir, who is currently working on a biography of Allah Rakha Rahman, elaborating, “Aamir has done 20 years in the film industry and his works are well thought of, and yeah, they do make an impact.” So when is she planning to begin? “Oh! I haven’t planned it as of yet, it’s only that I have it in mind to do some day.” We could not see Aamir’s wax statue in Madame Tussauds. But hope the reclusive actor nods his head for this one, whenever Kabir ‘plans’ it out. Kabir, as of now thinks she “should write these days, so I am doing exactly that,” she remarks with a smile.
Nasreen’s documentary Bismillah Of Benaras, Maestro Of The Shehnai, was screened at the Pravasi Film Festival in New Delhi. Her book The Dialogue of Awara: Raj Kapoor’s Immortal Classic was released by Randhir and Rishi Kapoor.
She recalls those six weeks when she was filming the second documentary The Outer World Of Shah Rukh Khan (the first one being The Inner World Of Shah Rukh Khan) “I’m sure SRK is an angry man, but he doesn’t show his anger. He keeps it to himself. Otherwise, he is very respectful.” Does that mean she missed to observe his aggressive side? “I did see him angry, but only once, while we were shooting in USA, when he went, ‘Please don’t shoot me while I’m eating’. And from that day onwards, we never shot him while he was having meals — he hates to be shot while eating.
Did you feel restricted? “Well, no. If one has a request to make, you respect that. In fact, I think it’s absolutely normal to have had such an objection. After all, haven’t you seen people shying away from their plates when they are being clicked. So just because he is a star, it doesn’t rob him of such a discomfort. Even you and I will not be comfortable to have been clicked when our mouth is disproportionately open, right?”

Sukhwinder sings for SRK | Rachana Dubey ■ rachana.dubey@hindustantimes.com |
TheRa.One song is his thirdnumberforthesuperstar after‘Chaiyyachaiyya’and‘Haule haule’ PPlayback singer Sukhwinder Singh has recorded asong Pto be lip-synched by Shah Rukh Khan in Ra.One. ThisisSingh’s thirdsong for Khan in 13 years. ‘Chaiyya chaiyya’(Dil Se..) and ‘Haule haule’(RabNeBana Di Jodi) were chartbusters.
Would this song hit high notes too?“I’mnot an astrologer,soIcan’t predict that. With my experience as a playback singer forthe last 15-16 years, Iknowthatthis song, likethe previous two, matches ShahRukh’s personalityand might become synonymous with Ra.One,” assertsSingh.
The song has been composed by South stalwart Ilayaraja. “It’s the first time in my career thatIrecorded a song fornine hours, non-stop The song is worth our effort becauseitsounds fresh and different from the work I’ve done lately. It’squite subdued,”Singhadds.
Sporting encounter Singhalso recorded the title trackfor Chak De! India, which featured Shah Rukh Khan but he didn’t lip-sync it. The playback singer is not disappointed.“The song was filmed in such away thatit still hadShah Rukh’s energy and the enthusiasm of the girls in the hockey team. It wastheir anthem. Haditbeen picturised only on Shah Rukh it wouldn’t have translated well on screen and the country-wide impact the song made would have been lost,” explains Singh.
So,which South stalwart does he prefer: Oscar-winner AR Rahman or Ilayaraja? Singhanswersdiplomatically, “It’s unfair to comparetheir style of working or their compositions. I’ve worked closely with Rahman and he hasn’t changed as aperson and professional. Ilayaraja is someone Ilearnt tremendously from in the course of this song.” Singh, popular forhis highpitched numbers, wasexpected to be present forthe launch of the Rafi Academyin the cityonthe weekend. “I’m aRafi fan.
