'I am very protective about my family'

Rajul Hegde in Mumbai

Shah Rukh Khan was in full form on Thursday as he cracked jokes with the media during a press conference to announce his wife, Gauri, as the brand ambassador of a furnishing brand, D'decor.

The actor, who seems to have lost a lot of weight after returning home from a 70 day hectic schedule of Ra.One in London, shot for the ad with his wife. He even tweeted about how nervous he was about shooting with her: 'Preparing for a "big shoot" 2maro. No it's not ra.one with ten cameras. it is with Gauri for D decor brand furnishings. very nervous (sic),' he tweeted a day earlier.

But there was no sign of nervousness at the launch where Rajul Hegde got to fire some quick questions at the star and his wife. Excerpts:

How did you convince Gauri to do the commercial?

The decision was entirely hers. That is what trust and love is all about. Gauri did not feature in this ad for money. She has interest in furnishing. The owners of the brand are family friends, so she was comfortable. I am very protective about my family and would not let them work in an uncomfortable environment.

Do you give any inputs to Gauri in decorating the house?

I can tell whether it looks good or bad but I cannot make any decision.

Which is your favourite corner in your house?

My children's bedrooms. Whenever I have time, I am either in my daughter's pink bedroom or son's blue bedroom. Both of us end up spending more time in our children's bedrooms. I like spending time in the library as well, to do all my creative work.

There were reports that everything is not fine between you and close friend Farah Khan.

If I am not doing any film with my friends, it does not mean that we are no longer friends. When I am shooting with someone, I am more in touch with him or her. This time I am not in touch with Farah but wish her all the success and hope her Tees Maar Khan becomes a bigger hit than Om Shanti Om. I want to see everyone doing well.

Will you watch Salman Khan's upcoming film Dabangg?

The promos and songs look interesting. Last week, I saw Lafangey Parindey. I will watch Dabangg at home after my children's exams.

'I watch regional movies on DVD at home'

Last updated on: August 27, 2010

Can you comment on the demand of prime slots for Marathi movies in multiplexes?

Regional films are made with a small budget and should be encouraged. I am speaking as a film person and do not want to get into the political agenda. I watch regional movies on DVD at home. Even though language is a problem, I feel the best stories come from the regional industry. There should also be sub-titles so that these movies can get more recognition.

Are you doing anything on television?

I am discussing a few shows but nothing is finalised as yet. I am busy with my film shootings.

'I'm too old for films'

Talking about her experience shooting for the ad, Gauri said "I have not worked so hard in my life. I am so tired that I have been sleeping for two days straight."

Asked if she would have featured in the commercial with any other actor, she replied, "I am in this project because of my husband. It was a home concept and it would be awkward for me to feature in it with any other man."

When quizzed whether she would want to try out acting in a film after working in a television commercial, she shot back, "I am too old for films. If I was younger, I would have considered."

Bungling Games eye Bolly rescue
Will he come?

New Delhi, Aug. 29: If the song can’t, surely the dance Khan?

The Commonwealth Games organisers may fall back on tried-and-trusted Bollywood to make the October 3 opening ceremony a success after A.R. Rahman’s theme song failed to impress the Group of Ministers (GoM).

The two names being considered are both Dilli da puttars and big international brands: Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Till now, the Games committee’s policy had been to keep Bollywood out, but sources said it may just have been an excuse to keep Amitabh Bachchan out. Now, with the preparations suffering one setback after another, the temptation to draft in tinsel town is growing.

There’s hallowed precedent too, although when Bachchan was the brand ambassador for the 1982 Delhi Asiad, there was no hip-shaking. That was a different era, when official opening ceremonies were all about official “culture”.

But when the BJP’s V.K. Malhotra mooted Big B’s name for Games 2010 five months ago, Suresh Kalmadi quickly nixed the suggestion, no doubt mindful of the changed Bachchan-Gandhi equations. Both Shah Rukh and Akshay, though, pass the Congress-Gandhi test comfortably.

SRK not only comes from a traditional Congress family but is also close to Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra. Akshay is the son-in-law of veteran actor and former Congress MP Rajesh Khanna, who lost narrowly to L.K. Advani in the 1991 polls but won the by-election a year later against the BJP’s Shatrughan Sinha.

However, there is a hitch: Shah Rukh may be abroad around the time of the opening ceremony.

“I have not been asked to lead any aspect of the Commonwealth Games from my line of work, to do a dance to promote it, but if I were asked, I would have done it,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying on Thursday.

He denied having been offered a huge fee to perform at the Games inauguration. “I am yet to be asked... but I am out of the country in October shooting for Don 2.”

Sources in Delhi, though, hoped that an approach from the “right quarters” would persuade SRK to participate.

Yesterday, Rahman had unveiled the Games theme song, Yaaro Ye India Bula Liya, 12 days behind schedule. At an earlier preview at a GoM meeting, he had been requested to tweak it a little. Today, Malhotra said people expected a better song from Rahman.

Many old timers feel the song isn’t anywhere close to the one for Asiad 1982, Swagatam Shubha Swagatam, whose lyrics were recited by Bachchan at the inauguration.

King Khan is the king of vulgarity

Shahrukh Khan

Actress Neha Dhupia rightly said that only Shahrukh Khan and S** sells in Bollywood. Tickets for the Shahrukh’s show in Dhaka were sold out like hot cakes and a 30000-strong crowd thronged the Dhaka's Army Stadium on December 10 to see their star perform live. But a Bangladeshi newspaper called King Khan as ‘The King of vulgarity'.

Weekly Blitz, a leading local newspaper, came down heavily on Shahrukh’s show, which also featured actors like Arjun Rampal, Rani Mukherjee, Eesha Koppikhar and Dia Mirza. It alleged that Shahrukh did things that hurt the sentiments of the Bangladeshis.

The newspapers slammed Shahrukh for smoking in public and alleged that he did it intentionally to drive a point that he doesn’t care the Bangladeshi authorities. It questioned why the actor was allowed to use the VVIP terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while he doesn’t enjoy such privilege even in his own country.

Shahrukh also received flaks for uttering Bangla slang on the stage. He also spoke in Hindi and English at the show. The newspaper also alleged that the Russian dance troupe that accompanied him, indulged in illicit activities with the locals

Just when one got fed up of seeing Shah Rukh Khan in soppy, syrupy roles, the man's changing it up. And how!

After a longish break, we'll finally get agood glimpse of the superstar in superhero mode, no less.

The self-produced Ra.One is expected to be a state-of-art SFX bonanza led by Khan battling out the baddies of the world with Kareena Kapoor in tow.

Let'shope all those numerous bucks he has invested in making Ra.One a lavish deal wil lfetch rich dividends too.

After all, with great power comes greaterresponsibility.

Plus, there's Don 2,a pumped-up sequel to follow the remake of Amitabh Bachchan's 1978 classic. Clearly, fans of King Khan are eagerly awaiting this action-packed double bill.

SRK and Devgn ‘virtually’ at war

The plot of Toonpur Ka Superhero is almost identical to that of RA.One. SRK is livid and has ordered for topnotch special effects to combat this

The effervescent Kajol may be the only binding factor between the two warring superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn. But even the never-say-die Kajol would find it hard to deal with the latest bone of contention between SRK and Devgn.

It now turns out that Ajay Devgn’s prestigious home production Toonpur Ka Superhero featuring Devgn with Kajol has a near-identical plotline to RA.One.

In Toonpur Devgn and Kajol have a young son who wants his seemingly ordinary dad to be a superhero. To prove himself a hero in his son’s eyes Devgn vanishes into the boy’s favourite cartoon world.

In RA.One Shah Rukh and Kareena Kapoor play a married couple with a son (same age as the boy in Toonpur…)who thinks his dad is too wimpy to be a true hero. To prove himself a hero Shah Rukh vanishes into a video game named RA.One.

In both the films the hero enters a gaming world, gets involved with characters in the virtual world and doesn’t know how to get back into the real world. How did the two superstars so distanced in their attitude to career and life, end up producing and starring in two films not only of the same genre but nearly identical in theme and characters?

Says a source very close to one of the projects, “I think the working-class dad wanting to be a superhero in his son’s eyes is a format that works universally. We don’t know who though of it first, Ajay or Shah Rukh. But we are only hoping that the audience will forget Toonpur Ka Superhero by the time RA.One shows up in theatres.”

Being a perfectionist to the core Shah Rukh doesn’t see it that way. Apparently he’s now stepping up the effort to pump up the excellence level even more now.

Says the source, “First Shah Rukh had to reckon with similarities to Rajnikanth’s Robot. Now there’s the similarities with Toonpur which have come from nowhere. He has now asked his director Anubhav Sinha to add more special effects to the project.”

While Shah Rukh and Ajay Devgn remained unavailable for comment the RA.One, sound engineer Resul Pookutty confirms the plot of RA.One.

Still from Toonpur Ka Superhero

Still from RA.One

As for Toonpur Ka Superhero the story is there for all to see. Including Shah Rukh, who is seething at the duplication and wondering who gave his plot away.
