Shankar Mahadevan is carving a name for himself in the world of music with his debut album Breathless. An album that has made everyone sit up and take note of a man who can apparently sing an entire song in just one breath.
Breathless appears to be a steady stream of a song that goes on without a break, stanzas, verse or even a pause for breath
.

SHANKAR MAHADEVAN

G.P. SAMPATH KUMAR

FOR SHANKAR MAHADEVAN, life is a stage with no retakes. Breathless at that sound bite? Not if you're even half way on par with this talented singer. In town to sing at the Red and White Bravery Awards function, Mahadevan zeroes in on what his music means to him. "I strive for the best and something different each time." He feels that today's listeners are more discerning and "will not put up with rubbish". Mahadevan feels that they are more attuned to what they expect of a certain genre of songs and it is up to the artistes to provide the right scores. And while he "loves being on stage since he is the centre of attraction it is a bit scary at times — there are no retakes so there is hardly any scope for error." However with a talented singer like him that margin may yet never be needed.

“I would be lying if I said that I was not expecting a nomination. I was definitely expecting a nomination, now if we win the award I’ll be more than happy.”

Who do you think will win the award?
“We stand a great chance this year, honestly, because what Kajra Re has done, I don’t think any other song has done.”

What more can we expect from you in 2006?
“2006 is a very big year for us films-wise. We are coming out with Karan Johar’s film, Don – Farhan akhtar, and Nikhil Advani’s Salaam-e-Ishq. We also have a Hollywood production, Marigold . So things are looking good.”

“It has been wonderful because the director Willard Carroll is a sweetheart to work with. We have the pleasure to write the background score for David Numan who is in the US. Our theme is going to be used by him.”

GULZAR AND SHANKAR MAHADEVAN'S ANTHEM FOR INDIA

TOI gets a ringside view of composers Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy setting Gulzar's lyrics to music for the India Poised anthem.

The heart-thumping score reverberates in the plush recording studio in Bandra. As the crescendo rises and falls, fingers drum out a rhythm and three heads nod in satisfaction. After 10 days of experimenting and one very crucial “sitting session’’ with lyricist Gulzar, composers Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have the India Poised anthem ready for listeners. Rich with imagery and metaphors, the anthem embodies the upbeat mood of an India marching towards the horizon and beyond. Written by Gulzar, the lyrics (Phalak pakad ke utho Aur hawa pakad ke chalo) were already charged with the spirit of a movement. It was imperative that a great musical score be woven around them, a score that enhanced the tempo and built it up. And who better to do this than the leading composers of today, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy?

When TOI approached the young musicians to compose the score for the anthem, they got down to the creative process immediately. “The words emotionally charged us up. After all they are written by the great Gulzar,’’ says Shankar who has also sung the anthem. At first, the trio brainstormed on the approach they should take to bring out the beauty of the lyrics. They spent hours in the studio laying down the music track, editing it, inserting the voices and re-opening and looking at it. “The word ‘poised’ itself suggests something ready to take off, like a rocket. We wanted to create something that pushes the emotions into a different realm altogether,’’ says Loy Mendonsa. Two compositions — one a flowing melody and the other with three distinct

parts — were readied first. “But they were one-dimensional and did not bring out the emotional resonance of the lyrics,’’ says Shankar. Then the composers had a day-long ‘sitting’ with Gulzar, with whom they had worked in their first film Rockford. The four of them put their heads together and jammed, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy’s youthful energy synergising with the patience and encouragement of the veteran Gulzar.

The creative quartet decided to lay emphasis on the words ‘chale’ and ‘chalo’ to give the anthem the feel of a mass movement. Gulzar told TOI, “In earlier decades, music directors and lyricists would have a sitting and only then would the creative process begin. How else would we have got the classic music of those days?’’

After the session, the composers came up with the final score that effectively conveyed the emotionally stirring words.
Shankar Mahadevan got Sukhwinder Singh, one of the few singers in the country who can render emotions in a high pitch, to sing a part of the anthem with him. “One phone call and Sukhwinder came over to the dubbing studio in 20 minutes,’’ says Shankar. The two singers pumped up the anthem with their distinctive styles, the differing grain and texture of their voices contributing to the creation of an inspiring piece of work. “It is a very strong and well-rendered melody if I may say so myself,’’ says Shankar.

Shankar gets a song as B'day gift
By IANS
May 03, 2007, 04:08

Mumbai, May 2: Very few know that singer Shankar Mahadevan, who is a part of the terrific trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, is also a part of the fabulous 30-year-old band called Shakti that boasts of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and famed guitarist John McLaughlin.

On his birthday this year, Mahadevan received a most perfect present - his friend McLaughlin gifted him a song called "The voice" and flew to Mumbai to be with him on the special day.

For Mahadevan it's one of the biggest honours he's received.

"He flew down especially for my birthday. There are certain people, the minute you meet them, you know they are great and John is one of them," said Mahadevan.

The duo have been a part of the fusion group for a long time and have performed more than 150 shows all over the world.

"I knew his birthday was approaching and thought of the song," said McLaughlin. "I write for people I admire and love and Shankar is one of them. To me Shankar is THE voice. I was talking to Zakir Hussain about my desire to get a vocalist for Shakti. He suggested Shankar, who sent me a CD. Three minutes after listening to it, I called him."

It was a great birthday for a great singer!

Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy strike it rich in 'Salaam-e-Ishq'

After the impressive score in 'Don', the troika of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa come up with another imposing offering in 'Salaam-e-Ishq', a film that deals with 'six different couples, 12 different lives and one common problem - love'.

Album: 'Salaam-e-Ishq'; Music Director: Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy; Lyricist: Sameer; Music Label: T-Series; Rating: ***

After the impressive score in 'Don', the troika of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa come up with another imposing offering in 'Salaam-e-Ishq', a film that deals with 'six different couples, 12 different lives and one common problem - love'.

'Salaam-e-Ishq' by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghosal, Kunal Ganjawala, Sadhna Sargam and Shankar Mahadevan sets the tone for the album.

Marked by a unique blend of bagpiper music and Punjabi folk, this peppy number truly brings out the exuberance of the composers.

The there is the impressive love song 'Mera Dil', sung by Shaan and Zee TV 'Sa Re Ga Ma' finalist Nihira. Their voices gel nicely in this high-pitch number.

Shilpa Rao, Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa lend their voice to 'Saiyaan Re', a fun-filled number with a qawwali touch.

'Dil Kya Kare' is a soulful ballad by Adnan Sami who does no injustice to the number.

One gets to listen to a different Kailash Kher in the emotional 'Ya Rabba' with the singer crooning it at a very low pitch.

After recreating a number of oldies in 'Don', Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy try again in 'Salaam-e-Ishq' with O.P. Nayyar'S*** number in 'Aar Paar', 'Babuji dheere chalna'.

Though Nihira lacks the depth of Geeta Dutt's voice and fails to relive the song's seductive essence, the song is quite likeable.

The album ends with a marriage song 'Tenu Leke' crooned by Sonu Nigam and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy were undoubtedly the leading composers of 2006 ('Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna' being the other score) and 'Salaam-e-Ishq' proves that they are one of the best in business in Bollywood right now.

Kank has been our toughest assignment: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy

Their major adda on any given day (other than a weekend of course) is their studio Purple Haze, located at the end of a narrow winding lane at Hill road Bandra.

A week ago, they were at the Yashraj studio to complete the background score for Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

Here’s the story of Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa in their own words:

Shankar Mahadevan:

I travel from Vashi to Bandra every day. Believe me, it’s a blessing. In those one and a half hours, I can make phone calls, organise my appointments, complete interviews and think of some compositions.

Right now, we’ve almost completed work for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. We’re also working simultaneously on Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Pe, Sajid Khan’s Heyy Baby, Anil Kapoor’s Shortcut and a Tamil project.

We’re also in the process of cutting our private album.

After almost a decade of being together, I’ve realised it’s important to respect one another’s work. There’s a wrong notion that I call the shots in the group. In fact, all of us sit and criticise each another’s ideas when they’re bad, rework them.

Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has been our the toughest assignment. We’ve had the highest number of creative bad days with that film. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna has been our the toughest assignment. We’ve had the highest number of creative bad days with that film. Last year was particularly good for us. We composed for Don. The songs are still playing on radio stations and in discos.

So if someone says that the music wasn’t upto the mark, he needs to take a walk. And also those who feel our music is repetitive. As for our friendship, we’re work pals. Ehsaan has the upper hand with guitar Loy sings all our English lyrics.

Ehsaan Noorani:

I’ve studied music in America. I’m heavily into guitar. Some day, I wish to put together a site of my own where guitarists from all over the world can connect with me, exchange ideas and thoughts.

I’m slightly closer to Loy than Shankar because we’ve known each other longer. We’ve worked on ad jingles and continue to do that. Some people have an impression that I’m media shy. I’m not. In fact, I let Shankar and Loy do the talking. But if I have something important to say, I do it.

Otherwise, its no point repeating what they’ve said. I choose to keep shut. I’m quite moody as well. If I feel like, I speak. I’m proud that at a time when music directors are breaking up, our team has survived.

Loy Mendosa:

I certainly miss spending time with my kids and my wife. My son is a guitarist. Like Shankar, I also travel a long distance  to work. It takes the life out of me. The positive side is that I get some time with myself.

We’re quite spaced out in terms of work and personal relations. You wouldn’t find us hanging around with one another at our homes for family functions.

We’re doing an international project Marigold. God knows what’s happened to it. Inquiries keep coming in. But I guess we’re better off ruling our arena here than look for elsewhere.

I’m a keyboardist, Ehsaan a guitarist and Shankar has trained in Hindustani classical. So whenever there’s something pertaining to western music, Shankar leaves it to us.. we leave the classical to him.

The system in India is quite biased. Singers are paid peanuts compared to actors who only lip sync. Otherwise, the music industry is the place to be in.

Daler or Shankar – who stole the show?
By MIO Team
Jun 07, 2007

While the tracks of Shaad Ali's ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ are raging the charts, there is a controversy raging within singer  Daler Mehendi and Shankar Mahadevan. Daler has accused that he has originally sang the title track of ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ and was surprised when he found that his voice has been replaced by Shankar Mahadevan in the audio. The title track of the film is already a chart topper and other songs are also garnering attention. Amitabh Bachchan’s energetic performance to the lively rendition of Shankar Mahadevan adds more zest to the track and the picturisation.

Though Shankar can be heard rendering the song, in reality Daler Mehendi was the first choice for it and has crooned the lively Punjabi flavoured track. He was not even aware that his voice or name does not appear on the audio and that his voice has been replaced. He was neither informed about the same. He was very excited about the song until be finally discovered that it has been subsequently replaced by Shankar Mahadevan. The trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have composed for the film.

When asked about the sudden change, Ehsaan says, “Daler had sung the song earlier but the song was re-recorded by Shankar Mahadevan later. Actually Mr Bachchan asked for the change as he did not want to break the series of hit he has got with Shankar as the

in the form of chartbusters like Kajra Re (Bunty Aur Babli) and Rock and Roll (Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna).” Daler and Amitabh shared screen space with the hit track 'Na Na Na Re' from ‘Mrityudaata’ but seems over the years many things have changed and now the trusted lieutenant for Amitabh seems to be Shankar Mahadevan. But this is not enough to sedate Daler at the moment, who is fuming over the sudden ouster from the track.

Kolkata, June 12, 2007

He juggles his work in Bollywood and as an independent singer with remarkable ease. Singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio was in town on Sunday for the Get Breathless with Shankar Mahadevan Show organised by Diagio.

HT City caught up with him.

There’s been a lot happening for you in Bollywood…
Yes, we are going great now and are really busy. We hardly get time to perform live. I will fly to Malaysia on Monday for a show with Shakti and Zaakirbhai (Hussain) will come all the way from Los Angeles. I will be back in the studios the next day. I am really enjoying doing so many things.

You’ve had three hits, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Don and Salaam-e-Ishq in the last few months. Don’t you feel that Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is following a formula with a disco, a romantic and a hip hop number in all films?
But that is what the crowd demands. We always have to keep this aspect in mind before composing. We have composed one disco, one romantic and one hip hop funky number in all the films but the content is different. Though Where’s the party tonight?, It’s the time to disco and Aaj ki raat are picturised in a disco, the music and content of the songs are different.

So you do cater to what the director and audience demand…
Of course, the director is the captain of the ship. I always follow his instructions but that doesn’t mean I am ready to compromise on quality.

I really don’t think it was a big issue. A singer’s voice can always be removed if the director thinks it doesn’t fit. It has happened in the past, too. There has been quite a controversy with Daler Mehndi alleging his voice has been removed and replaced by yours in Jhoom Barabar Jhoom….
I really don’t think it was a big issue. A singer’s voice can always be removed if the director thinks it doesn’t fit. It has happened in the past, too. Even scenes of the actors get chopped during editing. The matter is in court and it will be solved.

What is the status of the first studio album by Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy?
We are working hard on it. The album will be ready this year. The music’s going to be broadly definitive ranging from hip hop, lounge to club and will be full of energy.

While other composers are splitting, how do you three hold together?
We come from different musical backgrounds. It’s our USP too. We work more like a band rather than just composers. All our compositions come out during jam sessions. I am sure we will never spilt because we understand and respect each other’s creativity.

Do you plan to launch your son, Siddharth? The audience has already heard him in Bunty Aur Babli.
This is something I am never going to do. If he wishes to take up music he can do it but he will have to do it on his own. I can only guide him. Truly speaking both my sons are musically inclined and at times I feel proud. My younger son, Shivam, is only six and a few days back I was taken by surprise when I saw him composing a tune on his piano.

Daler's Take on the Jhoom Barabar Jhoom controversy:
A miffed Daler Mehndi recently got vocal about being dropped from the music credits of Shaad Ali’s Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Yash Raj Films, the producers issued a one-line explanation — “Yash Raj Films had got Daler Mehndi to sing for one of the Jhoom (Punjabi version) songs, but the terms and conditions did not work out….”

The irate singer reacted by saying that he was “completely shocked at their statement”. He elaborated: “I went out of respect to sing this song for Yashji and Gulzaar saab. During dubbing, Shankar, Ehsaan, Loy, Shaad Ali were all present. They were very pleased after I finished dubbing and were happy with the result.”

Interview with S-E-L on the music of ´Don´
By:

Following are excerpts from a recent interview with the composing trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy regarding their music for ‘Don.’

Q: ‘Don’ was an eagerly awaited soundtrack. Now that it’s out, how are you feeling?

A: We are very excited because we’ve worked very hard on ‘Don’. It’s not easy especially when the previous ‘Don’ with Mr. Bachchan has been such a classic. We had a lot to live up to and judging by the fantastic response we’ve received to the album, our efforts have paid off.

Q: What would you say is the defining characteristic of the music of ‘Don’?

A: It’s very contemporary, stylish and racy. We have taken care to maintain the essence of the old ‘Don’. We have retained and redone two of the old songs – ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ and ‘Yeh Mera Dil’, sung by Udit Narayan & Shah Rukh Khan and Sunidhi Chauhan respectively. We’ve composed three new tracks.

Q: While reworking the original tracks how much work went into keeping the sound similar to the old tracks but also modernising it at the same time?

A: To put it simply, we have retained the melody but changed the dressing besides adding surprise elements.

Q: Give us an example?

A: In the ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ song, Shah Rukh has sung an entire part! Listen to the album and you’ll understand what we mean! There are many more surprises. We don’t want to give them away in our interview!

Q: Tell us about the other singers in the soundtrack of ‘Don’?

There is a song called ‘Mourya Re’, sung by Shankar. That song is big in Mumbai because it is a Ganpati track. Then there is a track called ‘Aaj Ki Raat’, sung by Alisha, Mahalakshmi Iyer & Sonu Nigam. It has a very interesting club feel to it. We have a new title song, ‘Main Hoon Don’, by Shaan. You already know about ‘Khaike Paan Banaraswala’ and ‘Yeh Mera Dil.’ DJ Randolph has done a wonderful job of the title song of ‘Don’. We have also made a dedication to the earlier Don title song. We have incorporated that in this track. Then there is a remix of the title song, which has been done by the Midival Punditz. .

Q: Which track in your opinion will be the most popular?

A: I can confidently say that all of them will become huge. Even in the past, our albums have worked in totality rather than because of one or two tracks – ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’, and more recently, ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ are examples and now there’s ‘Don’.

Q: Have you seen the movie yet?

A: Yes, we have seen the film since we have done the background score as well!

Q: Tell us something about the film.

A: All we can say is that it rocks!

Post Re: Shankar Mahadevan Singer And Music Director

We’re music designers, not directors’

Musician Shankar Mahadevan, who was in the city over the weekend, says songs have be tailored for films

PIALI DASGUPTA

IF Move your Body from Johnny Gaddaar is your caller tune, you’re doing your bit to send the musical trio of Shankar Ehsaan Loy laughing all way to the bank. The trio, according to Shankar Mahadevan, are the first composers in India to receive royalty from their music and says they’re making more money this way. “Johnny Gaddaar is the first film in which the music directors became music co-producers. We sold the music of the film for 1.75 crores and we’d be earning from the compositions for the rest of our lives. But we didn’t charge a penny for our compositions. The money received is equally distributed between the three of us. We’ve always believed that the creators should get a royalty of the music that they compose. We’d like to work like this more often from now on,” says the lead singer. But the trio also believes in giving back a bit of what they receive from the masses. “We support a few causes. Although we can’t be present in different situations, we do a lot of shows at subsidised rates and sometimes even free shows,” reveals Shankar. The music of their first international project Marigold was panned, but Mahadevan is quick to defend his composition. “I don’t think the music was bad. There were certain songs that were typically Bollywood since the director wanted it that way. We’re very proud of the song Yeh Pyar Kya Hai,” he states.

    But occasional let-downs like

Marigold

haven’t prevented them from bagging big banner projects. The biggest directors in the industry always bank on them and Shankar says the idea is to customise their music to suit the director’s tastes. “We always keep the director’s headspace in mind since every director is crazy about the film he makes. For instance, KJo’s taste in music is distinctly different from Farhan Akhtar’s. We’re music designers, not directors,” declares Shankar.

The ‘designers’ have designed a unique way of staying closely knit and keeping the group intact. “We’ve never had any issues among ourselves. We keep our personal lives separate from our professional lives. We’re not the kinds who would hang out in the studio post work. My family is any day more important than creating music. Moreover, we respect each other’s musical ideas and give each other enough space,” says Mahadevan.

But if they’re doing well, it’s because of their integrity and sincerity towards their profession. The musicians spend sleepless nights if they sense that the music that they’ve composed resembles the tune of any other song. “We feel paranoid even if a single line of our songs sounds like anything we’ve heard before. But there are only 12 notes and there’s a high chance of your music sounding like somebody else’s. But whenever we’re in doubt, we call singer Mahalaxmi Iyer, whom we jokingly call ‘testing meter’, who instantly tells us if our composition resembles any other tune,” smiles Shankar.

As of now, the trio’s just finished scoring the music for Aamir Khan’s home production Taare Zameen Par and they’re totally kicked about having worked with the perfectionist. “Aamir’s a sweetheart to work with. He’s like a child, yet is completely focused on his work. The music of Taare should get noticed,” says Shankar.
