'The fact that Bhansali gave me the break stamped my career with legitimacy'

I enjoyed the script so much that I thought it will be very good if my dad produced the film," she says.

"My first film was not produced by him. This is not the done thing in Bollywood where producers launch their children but I guess the fact that Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave me the break stamped my career with legitimacy. My second film was not produced by my father, either. But for the Jane Austen project [the working title is Aisha] I could not but resist asking dad. I think this will be a funny and entertaining film, a very different kind of film compared to his last production, Gandhi My Father. When I read the script I was howling and laughing at the same time," she adds with a chuckle.

The novel Emma has had many film versions including Alicia Silverstone-starrer Clueless. Gwyneth Paltrow also played the mischievous young woman who sets up her single friends in Emma in 1996. In the film, Emma does not realise she is not very good at it and it comes as no surprise when she makes tangled mess of everyone's lives. And then Emma falls in love herself. The question is if she will be able to let everyone go from her hilarious and misguided attempts at matchmaking?

The project is written for the screen by Devika Bhagat [Manorama Six Feet Under] and would be directed by a relatively little known but promising director Rajshree Ojha [Chaurahen].

"Devika wrote the screenplay with me in my mind," Sonam reveals. "She had read in a magazine story about how much I adored Austen's work."

Sonam joined the 'girls' -- including sister Rhea -- in making a presentation to her father. Sonam has become a part of the production team.

"We need love and nurturing as filmmakers and artists," she says. "Dad would give us much more than nurturing and love."

Why Delhi 6 shocked Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor hasn't recovered yet from the 'shock' she had watching Delhi 6 at its New York premiere at the Museum of Modern Art.

"I knew I had a few scenes in the film but they really stand out thanks to Rakyesh Mehra [director of Delhi 6]," she says.

The actress whose luminous performance and the ability to hold her own against the much experienced Abhishek Bachchan in the film consolidates her reputation as being one of the most versatile of the contemporary artists. She plays Bittu, a middle class woman, who finds her life suffocating and seeks a new future by entering the Indian Idol competition.

"What I saw on the screen was 500 times more than what the script indicated," she says of her character, and the film in general.

She is taking kudos from well-wishers and journalists on Monday, confessing that she is still flabbergasted by the events -- of being feted in New York, of being mobbed by eager fans, and of being told how much they admired her father's performance in the Oscar-bound Slumdog Millionaire.

She says that if Delhi-6 happens to be her only release following her debut in Saawariya over a year ago, it was a matter of choice.

"I was given many good scripts following Saawariya," she continues. "But I would like to do one film at a time. I give to each film so much of myself that I am afraid I cannot do justice to more than one film at a time -- at least for now." Her next will be an adaptation of one of her all-time favourites Jane Austen's Emma and it is being produced by her father, Anil Kapoor.

'My brother threatened to leave the house if Dad did not act in Slumdog'

Anil Kapoor, whose career is enjoying its biggest hit [Slumdog Millionaire is approaching $160 million, with many countries including Japan, Germany and Spain awaiting the film], is quite excited over the Jane Austen project.

"I listen to young people all the time," he says with a chuckle.

It is well known by now how much his children, particularly son Harshvardhan, were responsible for making him accept Slumdog Millionaire.

"Dad often gives us the scripts that are offered to him," Sonam continues. "He is always asking for our feedback. He wants us to be the filters. He recognises our intelligence and instinct for good scripts. But he did not give us the Slumdog Millionaire immediately. I think he was quite surprised that someone called Danny Boyle had sent over the script to him and for some time, he was puzzled over it. My brother, who is a big fan of Boyle and has a huge poster of Boyle's film Trainspotting in his room, not only insisted father acted in the film but also threatened to leave the house if he did not."

'I told Dad that he should do Slumdog even if Danny Boyle were not going to direct it'

When she read the script, Sonam says, she was astounded by its humanity and the theme of a young man striving to overcome his seemingly desperate destiny.

"I told Dad that he should do the film even if Danny Boyle were not going to direct it," she says. "The script was utterly compelling."

"I also told him that not only did he have a complex role in the film but he is also the only one who is in it from the beginning to the end," she adds. "Besides, there was a cautionary element. Dev Patel plays the idealistic young man but who knows what success can do his character. He could become someone like, Prem [Anil Kapoor], who too came up from the slums but became a very different person when he became a millionaire and a celebrity."

Sonam was not able to see the Slumdog Millionaire shoot because while it was being shot, she was near Jaipur shooting for Delhi-6. The first time she saw the film was when it had the UK premiere at the London film festival.

"I have seen the exceptional work dad has done in such films as Mashal and Lamhe," she muses, "but in Slumdog, he soars much more."

Sonam finds her nickname embarrassing

It would be nice if you did not refer to the lovely Sonam Kapoor as 'Kabootari' or 'Massakali' the next time you see her.

The actress is not amused. But the names seem to have stuck on after promos of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Delhi 6 went on air and showed her with a pigeon (named Massakali) on her head in a song composed by A R Rahman.

The song is already popular, but people with an unkind bent of mind have started teasing her by that name, and the sensitive Sonam is embarrassed. ''Everywhere I go, people are calling me Massakali, Kabootari and all,'' complained the actress. Papa Anil kapoor, who in the West is affectionately referred to as the 'Slumdog' man, has not reacted so far.

Delhi 6 vs Saawariya

Sonam walked out of the station and exchanged her desi look for a funky avatar in Delhi 6, looking as rocking as can be, but the first time we saw her in Saawariya also had its own charm as she looked exotic and otherworldly.

Sonam says no to Abhishek

Oi oi.. what is this I'm hearing now? A trade types khabru buzzed to tell me that Sonam Kapoor khabru buzzed to tell me that Sonam Kapoor was also in the reckoning for the female lead in Ashutosh Gowariker's next period saga. Yeah, that Khele Hum Jee Jaan Se, set in preindependence India, in which Abhishek Bachchan is playing a freedom fighter.

Apparently, Ms Kapoor was approached for the role after Asin opted out. But she didn't take it up. And there are a couple of reasons for her refusal, says my source.

One of them is the unavailability of the dates required, since she's committed them to her other films and Gowariker can't postpone Bachchan's dates. Another cause, says my khabru, is that Sonam was skeptical about her pairing with Abhi. Kyun? Kyun ki she wasn't sure how their reel jodi would be received after Delhi 6 had ken a drubbing at the box-office. taken a drubbing at the box-office.

And that's when Deepika Padukone was approached and finalised for the role. Really now!

Pros:

Arguably the most talented actress of her generation, Sonam is a natural performer who really seems to know what she's doing. A stunning girl with definite personality, she relaxes completely in front of the camera and it is this self-awareness and screen-comfort that will get her far.

Cons:
She distracts big-name directors to the point of dementia. You can't blame a young girl for signing her first film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and her second with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, but the lesser said about those films the better.

Abhay and I have similar acting styles: Sonam Kapoor

New Delhi :Actress Sonam Kapoor, who is playing the female lead in dad Anil Kapoor's home production "Aisha", says she and co-star Abhay Deol have similar acting styles, making it easier for her to give her best."It was great working with Abhay. I feel we have very similar acting styles that made working with him so easy. It's always nice to work with someone who has done the kind of work you would want to do," Sonam told.

Based on Jane Austen's novel "Emma", "Aisha" is being directed by Rajshree Ojha and produced by Anil Kapoor and his younger daughter Rhea Kapoor. It is expected to release in April next year.Asked if she too would like to don the producer's hat like her father and sister, Sonam said: "I don't want to get into production or anything. I have left that for my sister and my father. I am a more creative person and thus acting is what is more suitable for me rather than the production side of a film."

Before embarking on an acting career, Sonam worked as an assistant with Sanjay Leela Bhansali during the making of "Black". Later she made her big screen debut in Bhansali's "Saawariya". Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's White Nights, the film also introduced Ranbir Kapoor. Her second film was Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Delhi-6" with Abhishek Bachchan. The film received mixed reviews, but her performance was highly praised. The 24-year-old is also working on "I Hate Luv Stories". Produced under Karan Johar's Dharma Productions and directed by debutant Punit Malhotra, the film also stars Imraan Khan.

Asked how she felt when people referred to her as the thinking actress, she said: "It's nice that people think this way. Every woman and artist would be happy if people think like that about her. So am I. I think it's because of the kind of work that I have done that this image has been created. It makes me happy." Apart from acting, Sonam endorses brands like Mont Blanc pens and L'Oreal and said that endorsement increases the visibility of an artist.

"Brands give you visibility. They not only give you monetary benefits but helps audience connect to you in a better way because you are not your character while endorsing the brands. You are yourself," said the actress, who loves diamonds. "I love jewellery like most girls. Diamonds are my favourites. Solitaires and even unconventional large pieces are what I usually like and wear," said the actress, who is also the brand ambassador of Anant diamond jewellery.

The film might have been clueless, but the striking Sonam Kapoor made a mark once again in her role as Bittu, an old Delhi girl.

Raised in an extremely conservative family, Kapoor wants to rebel and change her life, but her defiance doesn't stretch beyond Indian Idol. An impressive balance of spunk and sobriety.

One of the prettiest girls in the Hindi film industry, fashion magazines, designers, audiences and filmmakers can't get enough of Sonam Kapoor.

With her latest I Hate Luv Storys due in theatres Friday, here's a look at some of our favourite Sonam looks:

Fiery siren

With wet look curls and smoky eyes, Sonam looks utterly irresistible in this still from Aisha.

The dress is red, the lips are parted, and there's really nothing one would change about this.

Wearing an all-white outfit, this Sonam look has tease written all over it.

The hair is disheveled just a bit, the dress is tantalisingly lacy near the thighs, and don't miss the wings on the ankles.

Kapoor looks a complete knockout in this half-executive, half-cocktail avatar.

The white skirt is plain as can be, as are the black heels -- but that sexy black top works a lot of charm, as do the bright red lips.
