Sunidhi Chauhan

She shot to fame after she sang the hit 'Ruki Ruki thi Zindagi' in Ram Gopal Verma's Mast. Sandeep Chowta's first film got her ideal young voice in Sunidhi and her song became the most memorable number for that film. She has sold her solo album called Aira Gaira Nathu Khaira. She was the recipient to the RD Burman award for most promising newcomer in the year 2001.

She started her singing career at a very early age of four. She participated in many competitions and made her presence felt. Her family soon shifted to Mumbai when Tabassum, a TV host spotted her talent and expressed to her parents that she could further her career if they went to Mumbai. She became quite famous through the various competitions she participated in. Her performances were telecast all over India through the National Television channel Doordarshan, through the music show "Meri Aawaz Suno" where she won the "Lata Mangeshkar Trophy" for the best female singer of India along with Pradip Somasundaran in the male category. This was the first such televised contest in India in 1996. Her first break in a Hindi film was in the film Shastra followed by Gang, Veergati, Dahek, Bade Dilwala, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, Shyam Benegal's Samar and Vidhu Vinod Chopra film Mission Kashmir. She had no formal training before she entered into various national singing competitions. Lata Mangeshkar offered to train her when she won on the nationally-telecast "Meri Aawaz Suno"

Her singing career got a big boost when Sandeep Chowta gave her the first major break in "Mast". After "Mast" there was no turning back. Sunidhi Chauhan had been receiving criticism for a mature voice despite being young. However this criticism ended once Chameli came with her biggest song to date "Bhaage Re Mann" and today she is known as the most versatile singer after Asha Bhosle.

Her top songs include: Dhadak Dhadak (Bunty Aur Babli), Hey Shona (Ta Ra Rum Pum), Bhaage Re Mann (Chameli), Mehboob Mere (Fiza), Deedar De (Dus), Dhoom Machale (Dhoom), Le Chale (My Brother Nikhil), Sajna Ve Sajna (Chameli), Right Here Right Now (Bluffmaster), Kaisi Paheli Zindagaani (Parineeta), Ishq Samundar (Kaante), and Crazy Kiya Re" (Dhoom 2). She also sang the English language song "Reach Out" at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Asian Games at Doha, Qatar. She has also sung the songs in the Hindi-dubbed version of Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical. She sang the songs which were sung by Vanessa Anne Hudgens in the English version.

The Windows Vista Song

In Feb 2007, as part of it's marketing campaign and launch of Windows Vista in India, Microsoft hired Sunidhi Chauhan to sing the "Windows Vista Song" titled Wow is Now. This song features English and Hindi lyrics proclaiming the many glamorous features of the Windows Vista Operating System.

Rachana Dubey
Mumbai, May 08, 2007.

She’s been travelling across the country for recordings and live gigs. Right now, she’s at her swish home on the top floor of a skyscraper. And no... it’s been a wild goose chase to get her in the right mood at the right time.

I’ve heard you are turning into a music teacher.
What! Who told you that? I’m trained in music. I’ve learnt everything by listening to Lataji and Ashaji right from the time I was knee high. Obviously then, I can’t be imparting music education to anyone.

Tell me about your latest projects.
There are more than ten projects that I’m singing for.. including Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Shootout At Lokhandwala and Aap Ka Suroor.

Could you tell me a little more about the Delhiwala boy?
(Laughs loudly) Hello, I just told you there’s no man in my life right now. I’d been to Delhi for a recording. Frankly, one really gets bored reading sugary things written about oneself. Sometimes, crappy tittle-tattle can become a good source of jokes in the family.

How does your family react to the gossip about you in the media?
They’ve become used to it. They give it a deaf ear. They know the truth. Whether it is the so called link-ups with Sonu Nigam and Annu Mallik or my making frequent visits to Delhi because I’ve a business man in my life, my family knows the truth.

Thought of marrying again?
Not me! But certainly, like any girl’s parents, my parents have thought of getting me married. In fact they’ve been trying their best to convince me. I want to give it three years at least.

Is your ex-husband Bobby Khan trying to come back in your life?
Listen, my marriage is over... now legally as well. There’s no way that he can come back in my life. He can be happy in his own world and I’m happy in mine. I can only wish him good luck.

What do you look for in a relationship now?
Those days are gone for me when I could sit and dream about a Prince Charming. I’ve gone through a terrible period. If a good relationship comes my way and if I like it, I’ll accept it. I was strong enough to not let my broken relationship affect my work. I never sulked at work or sat teary eyed.

I believe you were offered Eklavya.
No yaar. Some other film makers did approach me for films which I politely turned down.

Your closest competitors today.
I don’t think there’s competition for me. There are some fantastic voices in the industry today. I’m proud to say that I’m the most versatile singer today.

Whom would you attribute your success to?
To my parents and Sonu Nigam. My parents have gone that extra mile to help me reach this far. My father was doing theatre in Delhi and was quite well off. He left his thriving career there and came to Mumbai with me. He took me to composers to get me work. I just had to go with him, sing and shut up. He maaroed more chakkars of composers’ studios than I did. Sonuji acted like a catalyst to my career. He introduced me to Sandeep Chowta for Mast. He’d always tell me about my plus points. I had the talent but he helped me groom it.

You were planning a private album.
It’s on. The songs will be in Hindi with English words as well. I’m making a comeback on the private album scene after six years.

You’re known to be punctual and hate composers who’re late.. some even say you have a bad temper.
Who told you that? I think I’m the only singer who doesn’t have a temper. The only time I got angry was at a music studio when I was made to wait for three hours without being informed about the delay in the recording.

Has the film industry’s attitude changed towards you?
Yes, it has. My success has made them behave really well with me. No one even thinks of rubbing me the wrong way now. Chadte suraj ko sab salaam karte hain. Today, I’m popular.. tomorrow I may not be. I’m prepared for that phase..when they will just look at me and move away. Believe me, its important to be prepared.

Have you ever come across singers bitching about you?
Several times. Initially, it would hurt me a little because they were colleagues who would do it. Now, I give it a deaf ear. I know that inevitable. It's the price of popularity.

Mysoreans swing to Sunidhi Chauhan's tunes

Special Correspondent

SPECTACULAR CONCERT: Sunidhi Chauhan performing in Mysore

Mysore: For a city reckoned to be a bastion of art and culture and given to appreciating the ragas — be they Carnatic or Hindustani — Friday evening proved that the city is just as likely to rock.

Ample proof was provided by the thousands who gathered to watch Indipop and playback sensation Sunidhi Chauhan. The singer regaled crowd with foot-tapping numbers and left them crying for more.

Described by her fans as a singer who can weave magic, the versatile singer in the making has a string of hits to her credit.

On Friday evening, she created magic with her mesmerising voice that rocked the young and the old alike. And perhaps proving that Mysore has another face to it and can swing to hip-hop and Indipop.

If one imagines this is just a one-off event then think again. An enthusiastic crowd egged on versatile singer Krishna Kumar, better known as KK, at an event filled with razzmatazz recently.

That the city has a young and swinging crowd that is as much at ease with rhythm and raag as it is with rock and roll is a testimony to Mysore's multifaceted character that continues to evolve and is not fossilised in time.

A similar response greeted the Colonial Cousins, Antaragni, Vasundhara Das, Shivamani, Louis Banks and Neeladri Kumar at recent concerts in the city. They presented a series of memorable concerts that played to full houses.

That the cultural czars of the city do experiment and are not hesitant to create new tradition is proved by the novel initiative that resulted in the evolution of the Yuva Dasara.

The event gave a new dimension to the Dasara festivities and infused an element of youth and modernity to age-old customs.

So it was with the introduction of adventure sports that gave a new facet to the festivities this year.

And Sunidhi Chauhan's concert and the public response to it only reiterates this aspect of the city.

Post Re: Sunidhi Chauhan Is A Bollywood Playback Singer.

‘I am 24, single and happy’

She doesn’t even remember when she started crooning. She was a singer even before she learnt reading or writing and the stage became her playground. That’s Sunidhi Chauhan for you. Very few people know that Sunidhi who’s a pro at singing any kind of songs hasn’t learnt singing at all. So, how does she know it all? Well that just because she seems to have an uncanny ability to learn music all by herself. And that’s probably the reason why she is so confident every time she is in front of the mike or is on stage. But that doesn’t mean that she keeps working 24x7, Sunidhi is known for her brilliant sense of humour and can have a person rolling on the floor with her brilliant imitation of some singers. She speaks to BT about making it big at such an early age and her future goals.

At the age of 11, Sunidhi won the music show Meri Awaaz Suno and got her award from Lata Mangeshkar and the world noticed her for her brilliant rendition of songs. A frock-clad Sunidhi was definitely excited but not nervous when she walked on the stage to receive her trophy. And Sunidhi was noticed by many, but at that young an age few offers came her way. She remembers singing her first playback number for Aadesh Shrivastav for the movie Shastra. Having performed with music directors Kalaynji-Anandji’s troupe called Little Stars, Sunidhi was noticed by many people. So did the victory of Meri Awaaz Suno help her at all? “Of course it did. Firstly people like Lata Mangeshkar heard me; secondly I reached so many homes. Also, I got my first playback break after that,” she says. Her second big break came with Mast, where Sonu Nigam recommended her to Sandeep Chowtha. “ Mast made a huge difference to my career. I got to sing some great songs, which are remembered even today. A beginner can’t ask for more,” she smiles.

When asked why she didn’t learn music, she says, “The age when one is supposed to learn I was already performing and now I hardly have any time to learn music. But I am a quick learner and what better teacher than onthe-job experience?” At 23 years of age Sunidhi is already independent girl. So how does that make her feel? “I don’t feel proud, but yes it makes me feel really good. It’s a huge boost to my confidence. At my age some girls are still undecided about the career they want to choose. But I can make my own decision,” she points.

But becoming a playback singer was not a conscious decision, says Sunidhi, who believes in going with the flow. “I never plan anything. Singing was more of a hobby that turned into my profession. Had I planned too much I would have missed out on the fun I had doing what I knew to do,” she says.
But it wasn’t smooth sailing all the while. Sunidhisss voice was very different from the saccharine sweet voices that people were used to among female playback singers. “But the good thing was that no one said she can't sing. Yes, after Mast I was offered a lot of fast numbers. But luckily that changed when Annu Malik offered me Meri zindagi mein song in Ajnabi. People suddenly realised that I can sing romantic numbers as well. Then things changed and I got to sing all kinds of songs. It got be a lot of appreciation. I think an artist has to be versatile. Thank god I was able to deliver. I have more than item-songs to sing,” she says. The passion for her music helped her survive even when she was going through crisis in her personal life. After her a brief courtship, Sunidhi married Bobby Khan, who’s choreographer Ahmed Khan’s brother. However, the marriage did not last long. But Sunidhi did not falter; she picked herself up and moved on with her life. Sunidhi is happy to be single at the moment. Doesn’t she have any plans to settle down? “No, not at the moment. I am 24, single and happy. I not in any hurry,” she laughs. Sunidhi doesn’t have any reason to hurry. The world is already crooning her songs.

But looks like some colleagues have a grudge against Sunidhi. Her growing popularity seems to have become an eye sore for some. Alka Yagnik has often been said to making unflattering comments about Sunidhi. So how does she deal with such malice? “I don’t deal with it all. The thing is that no one has come up to me and said anything to me. Alkaji is my senior; she has been nice to me whenever we’ve met. So, I don’t get upset over such petty things,” she says.

Many Indian singers often say that they don’t ever receive the kind of adulation that singers in other parts of the world get. And one of the main reasons for that is that there isn’t much of a market for music other than Bollywood music. Sunidhi says, “Bollywood music is pretty much the thing for us. And there isn’t anything to complain about. Nobody and nothing can change anything. One person cannot do anything. People for whom you are making your music have to like it and accept it. Till then you just have to do whatever you can to the best of your abilities.”

Seems like this 24-year-old is speaking words that are beyond her age. Does she miss growing up the way other girls her age do? “I don’t regret it at all. I am independent. If by growing up you mean hanging out with friends or going for movies or having fun, I am doing all that now. I don’t have a reason to crib about the way things have shaped up for me,” she says. So does that mean she has realised all her dreams? “No, I want to cut an international music album. Of course there are dreams that are to be fulfiled,” she dreams on.

Post Re: Sunidhi Chauhan Is A Bollywood Playback Singer.

Sharing notes with Sunidhi

Author: Dr.Mandar

It’s always good to boast- ‘I told you so’! When it comes to Sunidhi Chouhan’s singing success, I have that kind of feeling. It seems like a long way ago but actually it was just seven years back. I was reviewing an Indipop album- Aira Gaira Natthu Khaira by a debutante singer named Sunidhi Chouhan. I was so impressed by that young singer’s vocal range that I specifically mentioned in my review that this singer would go places!

Times have changed and they have proved me right. The same young singer has now become Bollywood’s reigning diva, belting hits at will, sweeping awards by the dozen. Verve and versatility have been her strong points and songs like Beedi Jalai Le and Mere Haath Mein Tera Haath Ho are recent examples. Recently she was in Dubai for her show – ‘The Don and the Diva’ and I got my opportunity to meet her and discuss a few things about her life and career.

At close quarters, she looks short- and sweet! She is just 23 but she handles the questions with a veteran’s assuredness. Not surprising, when you consider that her showbiz career started almost a decade and a half earlier, when she was just a small kid! Now she has blossomed into a young and beautiful- and confident and successful woman and not to forget- an exceptionally talented singer! Here is Sunidhi Chouhan- up close and personal!

How difficult or different was growing up as a child artiste?

It wasn’t too normal. When other teenagers were going out for movies, I was busy doing shows or recording in studios. So my childhood was different but looking back I would say- I have no regrets for that. Because what I am today is because of what I did back then and not everyone is lucky enough to achieve what I have managed to do.

From a child prodigy to a talent hunt contest-winner to Bollywood’s premier playback singer, not many artistes have successfully managed this transition. What do you attribute your success to?

I will contribute it to the X-factor. There are many good singers- sureele (tuneful) singers but may be they lack that extra something- call it commercial angle or whatever, to succeed at the highest level. That quality also comes to you with experience. I wasn’t as good as I am today but over the years, slowly I have improved. I strongly believe that if you are good enough then no one can stop you from getting your due. It might take some time but it will finally happen.

What do you think of the parents pushing their small kids into these musical talent hunt programs?

These programs have certainly provided a great platform for new and young talents but one thing that bothers me is the haughty attitude they develop after proving successful in such programs. Recently in one of the functions, one such little champ singer just looked through me as if I were nobody! Man, I never had this attitude!

I feel such attitude problems happen mostly because of their parents or the surrounding people who keep praising them sky-high! They have to keep their heads on their shoulders and accept the criticisms in right way.

You have always been labeled as an item numbers-singer, which I feel is demeaning in a way, considering your immense versatility. Have the Bollywood composers done full justice to your versatility?

I think this ‘Item song’ situation was there around one and a half years ago. Then I was singing a lot of item numbers and many people thought that I was unable to sing other types of songs. But since then my songs in films like Ajnabee, Chameli, Sur and Fanaa have changed this perception. Now I am singing around 80% romantic melodies and 20% item songs, so there is a good balance. It is nice to hear people now praising my versatility.

It must be difficult to get that energy and attitude into an item song to make it click. What are the challenges of that genre?

Item song is perhaps the most difficult song to sing. When I am singing a romantic song, I can just sit and hum but for an item song, I have to give it my all into that mike, I have to sing it powerfully! I don’t really understand why people call it an item song- it is always the most important song, which is chosen for promoting the album. If it becomes popular, then it becomes an item song. I think I am lucky to get so many item songs because all of them become popular! When I am on stage, people always demand my item numbers, that time they don’t want to listen to Kaise Paheli (a softer number).

So what do you feel when your good numbers are not appreciated?

I feel sad. Actually 70% of my numbers have been wasted in such a manner but I have learnt not to crib and take it into my stride because on the other hand I have got so much of success!

Do you think that there are good composers in Bollywood today?

(Smiles) Yes, I am working with them! I won’t ever compare the old times with current times. That era was too good and this one is not so bad!

Do you feel that contemporary composers are open to improvisations from a singer?

There are a very few composers who are open to such suggestions. Composers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Vishal- Shekhar and Anand Raj Anand just give me the tune and tell-“Sunidhi, now it’s your song, your baby!” But there are others who don’t like these things. I don’t blame them- because finally that song is their creation, their vision. But when they give you that freedom, you have to grab it. Like in Beedi Jalai Le, Vishalji (Vishal Bhardwaj) just told me to imagine as if I was on a stage, surrounded by a raucous, whistling crowd and then render the song. I did just like that and it worked!

Do you feel that advanced recording technology- like separate recording the male and female parts of the duet, takes away something from today’s songs?

Nowadays, we all (singers) have got so used to this technology that it doesn’t feel odd. I just imagine that there is another singer singing with me and accordingly give my expressions. It is more difficult than before.

Earlier the singers would rehearse for fifteen days before the song and even do rehearsals at the take. Now in fifteen minutes I learn the tune and if it is a solo, I take around an hour to record and for a duet, it takes 40 minutes. Sometimes in that time, I even do the harmonies and double-tracking. So in just one and a half hour’s time, we have to get into the mood of the song and record it. It has become very mechanical. This way, it is very difficult to put your soul into the song but somewhere along the road, that magic take does happen!

Once you had said that you would like to be a performer like Mariah Carey. Is that dream still alive?

(Laughs) No, now my thinking has changed. Now I have stopped thinking about who I want to be. I do not dream now. Let’s see where my destiny takes me. I could be more than what I want to be or I could be nowhere. Now, I just work hard without bothering about where I want to be or who I want to be.

So is this the new spiritual, philosophical Sunidhi that we are seeing now?

(Laughs) Yes, you could say that. Now I feel Mariah Carey is too good to emulate. I just want to be Sunidhi Chouhan and carve my own small niche internationally.

Microsoft recently chose you for the Windows Vista song and you are also singing for Disney’s High School Musical’s Hindi version. So is this your foray into English music?

My ultimate dream is to cut an English album on a huge international scale. These recent efforts are just small steps towards that goal.

What’s your daily schedule like?

I wake up at 9 o’clock, go to work by 11 am and come back home by 10.30- 11 pm. On an average, I am singing 2-3 songs, sometimes even 4 songs in a day. Sometimes I also have some Page 3 appointments. I practically have no time for myself.

How do you train yourself as a singer?

I have not officially learnt music but since I was very young- from about eight-nine years of age, I have been listening to Lataji’s (Lata Mangeshkar’s) songs and singing with them. That has been my only training. So far I have never had a formal Guru in music but I would love to learn classical music.

What is next on Sunidhi’s radar?

I am planning to do my own album where I can show different side of my singing. Mostly by the end of 2007, I should be able to manage to cut that album. There are many interesting soundtracks like Ram Gopal Verma’s Sholay, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Cash lined up for release. In fact, in this year practically in every soundtrack you will be hearing my songs.

Sunidhi replaced by new singer

Many times we get to hear that a popular and famous singer has dubbed the song of a newcomer singer. But probably we get to hear for the first time that the voice of a famous singer like Sunidhi Chauhan has been dubbed by a new comer singer Khushboo Jain. Music director Nikhil had recorded a song in the voice of Sunidhi Chauhan for ‘Deshdrohi’.

The song was supposed to be picturised on Kim Sharma. When producer/ actor Kamaal R. Khan heard the song, he completely rejected it. New comer singer Khushboo Jain came on the scene to dub the Nikhil gave another song for Sunidhi in ‘Deshdrohi’ along side Sukhwinder Singh. When Kamaal R. Khan heard the song, he rejected it again and this time too Khushboo Jain replaced Sunidhi, dubbing the song in her voice. This song has been picturised on Rosa Catalano in the movie.

Sunidhi must be as much shocked as we are to hear this piece of news!

Songstress on a roll

Till a few years ago, Sunidhi Chauhan was known as a feisty singer who sang only item numbers. Then she was known for her soft, soul-stirring tracks like Le chale (My brother Nikhil) and Bhaage re Man mera (Chameli).

And just when you thought you could slot her as a typical female playback singer crooning romantic numbers, she gives super hit, peppy numbers like Shut up and Bounce (Dostana), Lucky Boy (Bachna Ae Haseenon), Beedi Jalaile (Omkara) and the title track of Cash.

So what exactly is her mettle, you may ask?

"Versatility," says the singer. "I have sung almost all kinds of songs. At the beginning of my career I sang only item numbers and peppy dance tracks. It was Sonu Nigam who told me that I should strive towards being versatile and sing soft numbers too. I practiced diligently and today I'm singing softer, sentimental romantic songs than ever before."

The singer, who first shot to fame after crooning Ruki Ruki si zindagi from Mast, has sung various genres for almost all music composers. "I like to experiment and I'm always on the lookout for something different. If you remember, the title track of Bhoot was neither a soft track nor an item number."

Childhood dreams

The artist's tryst with music started from childhood. She grew up listening to stalwarts like Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle. What started as a hobby, soon turned into a passion. She won Meri Aawaz Suno, a national music talent hunt show, and was flooded with Bollywood offers.

Big break

At the age of 11, she got her first break from music director Aadesh Srivastav. Later, Sonu Nigam introduced her to Sandeep Chowta, who was composing music for Ram Gopal Varma's Mast.

Sunidhi recalls the experience vividly, "I was 15 at that time. I was very excited, in fact I was dying to go the mike. It was great fun. In fact, after I sang the song, I cried since I couldn't believe that I had actually sung for a film. I couldn't sleep for two nights out of sheer excitement."

Future plans

The 24-year-old, who has sung in almost all languages, enjoys listening to hard rock, pop, R&B, soul and jazz and admire Beyonce Knowles, Alicia Keys and Paul Simons. Right now, though she's busy with her film projects, she is keen on pursuing her dream project - an international album.

And yes, though she would like to be remembered as a versatile singer, she would hate it if she's known as an artiste who can sing only in a typical style. We are not complaining! Meanwhile, we can't wait to hear what this lovely songstress has in store for us in the near future.

Freudian slip:

Music:
Life

Rhythm: Soul

Passion: Music

Dream destination: Koh Tao in Thailand

Turn ons: Great video, nice fragrance

Turn offs: Liars
