'Junoon made me a face'

September 29, 2008

Harshdeep Kaur

Harshdeep Kaur from Sufi Ke Sultan was crowned the winner of NDTV Imagine's Lux Junoon Kuchh Kar Dikhaane Ka at its grand finale last weekend.

The episode featured a spectacular battle between the three finalists: Abhas Joshi (Bollywood Ke Badshaah), Malini Awasthi (Maati Ke Lal) and Harshdeep.Harshdeep left everyone spellbound with her matchless performance that got the maximum number of viewer votes.

A graduate in Mass Communication, this 21-year-old playback singer had also won the MTV video GAGA contest 2001, at the young age of 14. She is also the voice behind the beautiful Sikh prayer Ikon kai Onkaar in the blockbuster, Rang De Basanti.

Harshdeep talks to Rajul Hegde about her win.

How was the experience?

It has been a fantastic journey. In the beginning, we were just enjoying the activities. But it got tough towards the end, and we got more serious. The judges were critical of my singing but the public always supported me.

So you think you won only because of public voting?

Yes. I have nothing against the judges. I have learnt a lot from them. I am thankful to them because their comments helped me improve. The public must have voted for me because I always experimented. We hear Hindi songs everyday and they become repetitive.

When I was offered this show, the first thing that came to my mind was I should sing Sufi because I am a big fan of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. My voice suits Sufi music and I had never tried this before.

Did you think you would win when you entered this show?

I was confident about winning the show and today, I am very happy that my hard work has work paid off.

Who has been your inspiration?

A R Rahman! He is my idol and has inspired me.

How has Junoon helped your career?

Junoon was an important platform for me, as it gave me recognition. I have sung many songs as a playback singer, but this show has made me a face. Today, people not only know me for my voice, but also recognise me by face. That is good.

Your most memorable moment on the show?

When my mentor Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was asked to save one singer, and he chose me. I thank him for supporting and believing in me. The second time was when we had to perform in front of Amitabh and Abhishek Bachahan at the grand finale.

Junoon has not fared as well as the other musical reality shows.

I agree. But it did well with a certain set of audience. We got good feedback from the viewers.

What next?

I will cut a Sufi album very soon.

Also, I am getting acting offers in films, and I am considering that. I have sung the title song for Himesh Reshammiya's Karzzzz and two songs for Kajraare. I am getting offers for musicals.

Ali Abbas eliminated from Junoon

His fellow countryman and Sufi Ke Sultan mentor Rahat Fateh Ali Khan helplessly stated that India has showered love but not enough votes on his protegee. Pakistan's Ali Abbas fell way behind in votes to his Sufi Ke Sultan team-mate Harshdeep. As a result, he'll not be making it to the grand finale of Junoon.

A source informs, "Ali has always lagged behind in votes and it would have been a miracle for him to beat Harshdeep, who's emerged as the most popular with the public. It isn't a surprise as one expected Ali to go out. That leaves us with three Indians Harshdeep, Abhas and Malini in the final."

It must be recalled that Ali Abbas has been liked by all the judges but the Pakistani was always lagging behind in votes. Mentors of Mati Ke Lal and Bollywood Ke Baadshah, Ila Arun and Anand Raj Anand, haven't hesitated in saying that they found Ali much better than Harshdeep, who would now be hoping that the public continue to vote for her in large numbers.

Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan will be the guests for the grand finale of Junoon that will take place on 27 September.

Post Re: Talent Hunt & Musical Show

India's first complete talent hunt underway
The talent hunt started out as a show, but it's now become a movement on its own.....

Ianother step taken by the ndian Music Academy (IMA) to consolidate the position of traditional Indian music amongst youngsters today, founders Durga Jasraj and Vikram Shankar have conceptualized India's first complete music talent hunt. The talent hunt is unique since it will tap the genius of musicians across India, across genres like ghazal, bhajan, sufi, qawwali, folk, Indian classical vocals and instrumentals, and across age groups (from five to 45 years). There is also no SMS voting, and only the judges will decide the winner.

Three mega finalists each have been chosen from four cities (Chandigarh, Kolkata, Chennai and Bhopal), while the Mumbai leg of the competition will take place tomorrow. The response so far, says judge Durga Jasraj, has been overwhelming. "It started out as a show, but it's now become a movement on its own ," says Jasraj.

Great response "For example, in Chandigarh, the local associates were so overwhelmed with the talent unearthed, that they asked us to select 30 best talents, which they would promote on their own in the North Zone. And in Bhopal, the Madhya Pradesh government will provide scholarships to six best participants."

These rewards have come as a welcome addition to the main prize that the show offers to the six winners an episode each on DD's Ideal Jalsa, showcasing their talent, and a one year music scholarship from the IMA. "And if they do well, the scholarships can also be extended to three years," says Jasraj. "But in cities like Kolkata, the zonal winners are already being asked to sing in concerts."

Young participation "The winners will also get to share stage with noted musicians when they perform," adds Pt Ratan Mohan Sharma, who will be judging the Mumbai round with Jasraj and sitar maestro Niladri Kumar. "That's how they'll learn to stand on their feet."

But most of all, the fact that the maximum participation for the talent hunt is from youngsters, has the judges beaming the most. Says Jasraj, "The media has raised concerns whether youngsters are taking up these genres, so it's heartening to see so many youngsters step up. In fact, we've seen that the younger people are far better in terms of creativity, quality, content and confidence. In fact, one of the finalists is an 11-year-old boy!" The judges are also not worried about any doubts that the contestants may have about the selection processes, since various Indian genres are pitted against each other. Explains Pt Sharma, "Ultimately, music lies in seven `surs'. Whoever is most knowledgeable, and does best within these `surs', is clearly the best."

Fair judging Jasraj concurs, adding that only those finalists who had an indepth knowledge of their respective genres were chosen. "Plus, even the audience would loudly applaud the deserving participants. Whoever has won so far, has touched the hearts of everyone in the audition."

The six winners of the competition will be selected by an eminent jury, consisting of Pt Jasraj, Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia and Jagjit Singh, on December 11 in Mumbai.
