Resul Pookutty: The man who treasures silence
24 Feb 2009, 0216 hrs IST, Priya M Menon, TNN

CHENNAI: Not even in my wildest dreams did I think I’d win an Oscar nomination,” said Resul Pookutty, hours before he flew out of the country to the 81st Academy Awards. When he finally held aloft the prized gold statuette, it was the grand climax to a career that began in a Kerala village.

The youngest of PT Pookutty and Nabeeza Beevi’s eight children, Resul attended a government school in Vilakkupara in Kollam district. He was fascinated by films but never thought he would work with some of the biggest names in world cinema. “Nobody in my family has any connection to the world of entertainment or films,” he said.

The physics graduate’s entry into films was pure chance. “When I applied to Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, I thought it would be a natural progression of physics,” says Pookutty, who went to MSM College, Kayamkulam. It was only after the week-long orientation course at FTII, which all candidates are given on cinema and filmmaking, that he realised what the course was about. “That’s when I understood the role sound plays in film.”

He didn’t get through the first year, so he returned to Thiruvananthapuram and spent the next year preparing to take the entrance exam again, while also studying law. Joining FTII in 1991 was a major turning point. “It is not a technical institute but an art school with a major focus on film and allied arts,” he said.

His desire to do live sound took him to Mumbai. “I always wondered why our films sounded so bad while Western films sounded so natural. I realised that our films do not give that experience because of the way sound is done,” said Resul.

He got his first break on Rajat Kapoor’s Private Detective. “He insists on absolute silence on the sets,” said cinematographer Ravi K Chandran, who worked with Resul on Black, Saawariya and Ghajini.

While Resul was working on Saawariya he got a call from the Indian producers of Slumdog Millionaire. “As a student in FTII, I had a picture of the cult film Trainspotting in my room. I couldn’t believe I was going to work with the same Danny Boyle,” Resul said. “When I first met him, he had a list of films I’d worked on and asked me which of them he should watch; I was struck by his humility,” Resul said. . “I told him he could have his pick since a part of me is there in every film.”

Doing live sound for Slumdog was no mean feat. “It was shot in a very unconventional way, to capture live sound in the city of Mumbai was very challenging,” he pointed out.

“Since post production was done in London, I had no direct interaction with Rahman though we did exchange a lot of material,” he added. Resul, who also won the BAFTA, is the first Indian to win the Cinema Audio Society awards. And he is glad technicians in Indian films are getting the attention they deserve.

Resul rushing back home to attend daughter's birthday
Bureau Report

New Delhi, Feb 24: Kerala-born technician Resul Pookutty, who bagged an Oscar for sound mixing in "Slumdog Millionaire" and was appreciated for his acceptance speech, does not want to miss his daughter's first birthday party and is rushing back home.

"Last night was really exciting. It was like a dream. So many things happened in a short span. I could not sleep for more even two hours," Pookutty, who was awarded along with fellow re-recording mixers Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke, said from Los Angeles.

The Film and Television Institute of India graduate said he will reach his Mumbai home on February 26 to attend his daughter Falina's birthday.

"Falina will be a year old on the 26th. And I have to reach home," he said.

Pookutty also said that his acceptance speech was dubbed the most eloquent by American Broadcasting Corporation.

"I was informed by Vikas Swarup that ABC termed my speech as most eloquent at yesterday's ceremony," he said.

A beaming Pookutty had yesterday said on stage that the Oscar was a piece of history handed over to him.

"I come from a country and civilisation that gave the world the word that precedes silence and is followed by more silence. That word is 'Om'. So I dedicate this award to my country," he had said in his speech.

It feels like I’ve gone from Black to black-out: Resul

ResulMinutes After Winning The Oscar For Sound Mixing Resul Pookutty Spoke to Subhash K Jha.

“It feels like I’ve gone from Black to black-out,” Resul punned on one of his finest works in sound mixing for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black and the state that Resul was in on Oscars night

“I’m holding the Oscar statuette in my hand and I’m staring at it in utter disbelief. I can’t believe that a boy from the backwaters of Kerala is today holding the most coveted statuette in his hand.Like I said in my speech I’m a holding a piece of history in my hand and I’m so glad to have made my country proud.”

On Monday morning from the Oscars venue in LA , trying to make himself heard above the glamorous din of cinema’s glitterati gathered to honour what turned out to be the Slumdog Millionaire night, Resul couldn’t believe what was happening to him. “I’m talking to you watching the best and most glamorous talent from American and world cinema passing by. I can’t believe I’m here with my wife. Our kids are in Mumbai and they saw their father getting the Oscar. It’s a moment of pride that my family will treasure forever.”

Screaming to be heard above the noise of excited Oscar winners and congratulations Resul says, “The response to an Indian winning a technical award at the Oscars is so encouraging. You know, for decades we Indian technicians have been fighting to be seen and heard in Indian cinema, using old equipment and dodging the belief that the more visible aspects of cinema(like the actors ) are all that counts . I’m so glad to see the technical aspect of filmmaking come into its own.”

At the Oscar venue Resul was swamped by congratulations. “Angelina Jolie just congratulated me. And the technicians who were nominated along with me for sound mixing for The Dark Knight and Wall E also congratulated me. It feels good to find such acceptance on such a prestigious global platform.”

Resul plans to return to India on Tuesday to be with his family. “I need to share this little beauty with everyone out there. It doesn’t belong only to me.After that I’ll see where this new turn in my destiny takes me.”

'I dedicate this award to my country'

Rajaneesh Vilakudy
February 23, 2009

Resul Pookutty

This is an incredible moment. My life will never be the same again!" Resul Pookutty exclaims. "Not even in dreams did I imagine that I would get such a big honour. I am particularly happy that I got an award for a film that was shot in my favourite city, Mumbai.''

Minutes after he bagged his award, the Oscar winner was on the phone with rediff, talking about his big win for Slumdog Millionaire in the Best Sound Mixing category.

He added that he would like to dedicate the award to India, especially to the film industry.

''I am really proud that I could do this for my country. I'm thrilledthat I am winning this award for India," Pookutty said.

Vilakkupara, a tiny hamlet in Kerala, where he was born, erupted in cricket-style celebrations when the news was flashed on television channels. Almost 1,000 peopleturned up at his house, where mediapersons were part of the celebrations.

When informed about the celebration in Kerala, he said, "I am really happy. This could be one of Kerala's biggest moments. It is the perfect Shivratri gift for Keralites."

Pookutty is now planning to direct a Malayalam film -- an adaptation of well-known writer Anand's Govardhanante Yatrakal --starring Mammooty.

For those who missed Resul's acceptance speech at the Oscars, here it is: 'This is unbelievable. We can't believe this. Ladies and gentlemen... sorry... I share the stage with two magicians, you know, who created the very ordinary sounds of Bombay, the cacophony of Bombay, into a soul-stirring, artful resonance called Slumdog Millionaire.

I come from a country and a civilization that given the universal word. That word is preceded by silence, followed by more silence. That word is 'Om.' So I dedicate this award to my country. Thank you, Academy, this is not just a sound award, this is history being handed over to me. My sincere and deepest gratitude to my teachers, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, Paul Ritchie, Pravesh... and everybody who has contributed to this film, Glenn Freemantle and all the sound mixers. I dedicate this to you guys. Thank you, Academy. Thank you very much.

Resul Pookutty: The Keralite Oscar nominee

Resul Pookutty: The Keralite Oscar nominee
Baiju NT January 24, 2009

Resul Pookutty is possibly a name that you've seen only on posters and credit rolls of films like Gandhi, My Father (2007), Saawariya (2007), Ghajini (2008) or Slumdog Millionaire (2008). How many of you really know what exactly he does in the world of moviemaking? This Keralite, aged 37, is one of the best known sound designers in the country.

Hailing from Vilakkupaara village near Anchal, Kollam, Resul is the man in limelight today for winning an Oscar nomination for his work in Slumdog Millionaire, a film in the Oscar race with ten nominations, including three for music director A.R. Rahman. Pookutty has also been nominated for the 2009 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award for best sound in Slumdog Millionaire.

A graduate of Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, Resul Pookutty has been in the music industry for 13 years now with a filmography of more than ten blockbusters. He started his career with Rajat Kapoor's little-known Private Detective in 1997 and came into the limelight with his work in Black (2005).

Interestingly, Black was a film without songs, but the sound got everyone talking. His next venture, Gandhi My Father, was a challenging experience in his career since the film demanded extreme attention on the variations in Gandhi's voice from his youth to old age. However, his hard work paid off when he got an opportunity to work with one of his favourite directors Danny Boyle in Slumdog Millionaire.

Talking to a newspaper over phone from his house at Andheri, Mumbai, Pookutty said he was sure that his nomination “will make us rethink the way we look at technicians.” Except for the work of three foreigners, Slumdog Millionaire is an Indian film, he added. Resul Pookutty will arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on January 27

Resul Pookutty at the Oscars

'I blanked out when my name was announced at the Oscars'

From a small village with no electricity to Los Angeles where he bagged an Oscar award for Sound Mixing, Resul Pookutty has truly come a long way.

Resul has worked in films like Black, Gandhi My Father, Saawariya, Traffic Signal, Dus Kahaniyan and Ghajini but it was Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire that put him on the world map.

Resul talks to Patcy N about winning the Oscar experience.

Did you expect to win the Oscar?

When we went there, we knew we had 50-50 chance. But when the award for Best Sound Editing went to The Dark Knight, we got dejected. There was complete silence in our row. I thought our chances of winning were dim.

Resul Pookutty at the Oscars
'Steven Spielberg shook hands with me, Brad Pitt saluted me'

What was your first reaction when your name was called out?

When the category was announced, I kept repeating Slumdog in my mind. But as soon as my name was announced, I blanked out. Then I regained my compsure, and spoke.

Did you prepare your acceptance speech?

Not really. I did not give any speech at BAFTA or Golden Globes. The only thing I wanted to say was Om, as that is the first sound and it comes from our cultural background. I said it because I represent this country. The rest was not planned. BBC rated my speech as the most eloquent speech.

What was the biggest high of being at the Oscars?

Steven Spielberg shook hands with me and said that it was a well-deserved award. That was the biggest honour. Brad Pitt saluted me. Ben Burtt, who was also nominated with me for WALL-E, said that he many many trophies at home but he thought that this belonged to me, as my work was better. Just imagine someone telling you that!

What happened after the Oscar ceremony?

After the show, there is customary thing called the winners walk, where they take you through long corridors. Photographs of former winners are hung on the walls. After you finish, a champagne is offered to you. Then, they take you to a room where photographers are waiting for you. Adjoining that is the press room, where the media talks to you.

Later, there was a lot of partying from the Governor's Ball to Vanity Fair. Fox Searchlight threw a party as well. I partied till 5 am!

When you arrived in Mumbai, there was a grand welcome waiting for you. You had to be taken in a police van because of the crowds.

I felt like Jamal, when he is taken in the police van for interrogation. I never expected to travel in a police van. It was scary, as my children were with me. And I didn't where my luggage was.

'80 percent Indians are always in recession, and we are talking of recession now'

What was the reaction at home?

Unfortunately, my parents are no more. But I consider my in-laws to my parents. They were happy and proud of me.

My wife was shocked with the kind of response I got. She never expected people to come and talk to me.

When I had reached Los Angeles, my name was randomly picked up by the computer for an additional check as I have been frequenting America. When they realised that I have been nominated for the Oscars, for Slumdog Millionaire, all of sudden there were people started surrounding me. They spoke to me for half an hour about the film. I did not expect that.

You have come from a lower middle class background to this place in life. Tell us about your journey.

My village -- Vilakkupara, a tiny hamlet in Kerala -- had no electricity until I was in Std 12. I had to walk to school. But I don't want people to think of my rag-to-riches story. I don't want the media to project that. More than 70 percent Indians living in villages still don't have electricity at home and have to walk to school. So I am like any other boy.

About 80 percent of people in our country are always in recession, and we are talking of recession now. People in the West get depressed when they don't have money. But in our country, even if you don't have money, you can dream. And that dream is taking our country forward.

If you want to project anything, project my dreams and aspirations. I dreamt big and worked towards it. I studied in a government school. The biggest attraction of going to school was the free lunch that we got. It wasn't that was there was no food at home. But sitting and eating with your friends and having fun is something else.

My villagers don't know what the Oscars are, and what I am today.
