Aditya is much ahead of me: Udit Narayan

Proud papa Udit Narayan is happy that his son Aditya is anchoring Zee TV’s ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ at this young age. Willing to make a good citizen of his son, Udit gives all his best wishes to Aditya

He knows well that there is a tough competition between ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ and ‘Indian Idol’ on Sony for which Udit is a judge. In a recent tête-à-tête, Udit talks about his son, his career and lots more. Here is the excerpt.

Q: On one hand, your son is an anchor in Zee and, on the other hand, you are a judge in Sony? This is indeed a tough competition between a father and son indeed.
A: He is quite young now, but seeing people’s love for him it feels nice as a father. Many people have told me that he is much better than me and as a father I too think so. But, I think that the competition between us, as an anchor and a judge, is intense.

Q: How do you feel when people compare you with your son?
A: Like any other father, even I feel proud when people compare me with Aditya. I might be his father, but feel that I am much behind him. At his age, he has learnt a lot and has many other qualities that I did not possess at his age.

Q: What advice do you give him as a father?
A: I want to make him a responsible citizen and a good human. Thus, I keep reminding him of his roots. I always tell him to respect his elders and teachers. He might have been born to a father who is well known, but he always has to remember that a good character and ethics help in building a good personality, which in turn leads to the progress of a person.

Q: Are you happy that he has chosen to anchor ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’?
A: Aditya always likes the show, but he once told me that it would be too early for him to anchor such a show. However, when the offer came to him, he had a talk with me and then decided to anchor the show.

Currently, he is in the second year at Mithibai College and is yet to complete his graduation. I’m happy that people like him as an anchor.

Q: What advice do you give him as a singer?
A: I have already told you that he is much ahead of me in some matters. So I do not have to give him any advice as a singer.

Q: A great singer like Asha Bhosle is giving him singing tips. What do you have to say for that?
A: The goddess herself is showering her blessing on Aditya. What else can I ask for? Since childhood I have seen a habit of research in him and now with the blessings of Ashaji, I’m confident that he will be able achieve whatever he wishes for.

Q: Aditya has done a diploma in English contemporary music? How much will it be of a help to him?
A: Since childhood, I have seen an urge in him to become a good singer. He has learnt Indian classical music and to do well in the international market, he has also learnt English contemporary music.

Today is a time for a versatile singer to have his hold on all kinds of music. Thus, I’m confidant that the course, which he has done, will be of great help to him in his career.

Q: You had once sung a song ‘Papa Kehte Hain’. Do you feel that Aditya is doing the needful on your behalf?
A: (Laughs) I think it is pure co-incidence. Aditya was born in August 1987 and it was on the same time that this song sung by me had become a hit. I had never imagined in my life that my son would make this song a reality for me. - Rajnee Gupta

‘Real’ wife stomps up to Udit’s hotel room
Stunned singer & wife lock themselves in

Patna, April 21: A woman claiming to be Udit Narayan’s “real wife” laid siege to his hotel room this morning, forcing the playback singer and wife Deepa to lock themselves in till police arrived to escort them to the airport.

Ranjana Jha breezed past Maurya Hotel’s security guards, a crowd of “supporters” and TV cameras in tow, and knocked on the door of room number 401, where the couple had checked in last night after attending the marriage of Narayan’s niece.

“Look the man has no courage to come out and speak to me,” Ranjana cried to the cameras as she kept knocking, ignoring hotel staff’s requests to leave.

She claimed she had married Narayan in 1984 when he was a small-time singer in Patna, and alleged Deepa was, therefore, not legally wedded to him.

“He kept me in the dark about his second marriage for years and now I have come to seek my rightful place,” she told reporters, holding up photographs of Narayan and herself.

As he was led out by the police, Narayan refused to answer queries. Followed to the airport by the media, he lost his cool and gave them a mouthful as his guards scuffled with camera crews, damaging three lenses.

Later in the evening, a news agency quoted him as saying in Mumbai: “I don’t know this woman and I have never met her before. These are attempts to malign me.”

“Everyone knows I am his wife,” Deepa said. “It (the allegation) is all rubbish and an attempt to gain cheap publicity.”

Although Narayan and Deepa are reportedly married several years ago and have a son, Ranjana claimed she was given to believe they were merely living together.

She alleged that after Narayan shifted to Mumbai, he got acquainted with Deepa, a fellow singer of Nepali origin and soon began living with her.

“Whenever I went to Mumbai, Deepa threatened Narayan with dire consequences and forced me to cut my visit short. As I didn’t want any harm to come to my husband, I stayed back at Patna. But I continued to enjoy the status of his wife. He used to send me money.”

But when she learnt a few months ago that Narayan had married Deepa, she said she found it impossible to take it lying down.

Ranjana alleged she had conceived thrice but Deepa had got her to take medicines to abort the child.

Ranjana, who now stays with her parents at Balua-Nirmali village in Bihar’s Supaul district, claimed her parents-in-law, Harekrishna Jha and Bhuvneshwari Devi, “disapproved” of their son’s second marriage but were helpless as they were dependent on him.

Narayan said: “I had received threatening calls four-five years ago but I didn’t pay any attention to them.”

He said he would lodge a report with the police after consulting his lawyers in Mumbai.

Ranjana said she would seek an appointment with chief minister Nitish Kumar, and if nothing came of it, would move court. For now, she has refrained from lodging a case, preferring to wait for a patch-up.

Happy ending for Udit wife

OUR CORRESPONDENT

Patna, July 28: The drama is over ? Ranjana Jha and Udit Narayan are “man and wife”.

The playback singer today arrived at a “compromise” with Ranjana, who sparked a furore three months ago by claiming she was his first wife, before the Bihar women’s commission.

Avoiding the queries of reporters outside the panel’s office here this afternoon, Narayan walked in along with four personal guards and lawyer Majid Menon. Ranjana had reached the place by then, lawyer Y.V. Giri accompanying her.

The commission headed by Manju Prakash presented a draft agreement to the duo. It read: “Udit Narayan, son of Harekrishna Narayan Jha, has accepted Ranjana as his wife and agreed to provide for her maintenance and upkeep.”

Narayan and his lawyer read the agreement in which the singer said: “I, Udit Narayan, recognise and accept Ranjana Narayan as my wife and promise to look after her.”

Ranjana, too, submitted: “I have no complaint or grievances against the singer’s wife, Deepa Narayan, and their son Aditya, born on August 6, 1987.” She agreed to withdraw the complaint lodged against Narayan provided “Udit continued to support her financially and emotionally”.

They signed the agreement in the presence of Prakash, who said it was a “working arrangement under which the status of Deepa and Aditya would remain unchanged, but Ranjana would also be accorded the status of the singer’s wife”.

Asked if the arrangement did not violate the law, she said: “Narayan’s two wives had been living under the same arrangement for years. There could have been no better solution at this moment.”

Narayan said after the proceedings: “Samjhauta ho gaya (we have reached an agreement).” He left amid tight security, refusing to speak to the media.

Giri, the woman’s lawyer, said compromise was the best solution.

Ranjana, who stormed a hotel in April where Narayan was staying with the claim that she got married to him in 1984 in Supaul district, today said in a feeble voice: “Jo patni ka adhikar tha, mil gaya (I have got what a wife should have). My fight was for staying together with Udit. I will discuss it with him later.”

Udit Narayan

Birth: Dec 1st
Birthplace: Nepal
Profession: Playback Singer, Bollywood.
Family: Wife Deepa Narayan Jha and son Aditya Narayan

Udit Narayan is, without a doubt, the reigning king of male playback singers. He was born to on the border of India and Nepal.Udit's capability as a playback singer knows no bounds, as he has been magnanimously acclaimed in every kind of melody - soulful, romantic, fast-paced and recently, even pop. Udit has an extremely versatile tone which appears to flawlessly suit every Indian hero on screen. And today, innumerable awards and accolades later, Udit Narayan possesses one of the largest arrays of hit songs in the industry.

Udit Narayan was born on the 1st of December to father who was a farmer,Hare Krishna Jha and mother Bhuwaneshwari Devi. He belogs to the Brahmin caste. Narayan studied at Kunauli Bazaar (Saharsa), where he passed his S.S.C. and later obtained his intermediate Ratna Laxmi Campus (Kathmandu).

Udit Narayan began his career in Nepal singing for Kathmandu Radio Station where he used to sing Maithli and Nepali folk songs. Udit worked for Kathmandu Radio for almost eight years before the Indian Embassy offered him the chance to study classical music at a prestigious school in Mumbai,Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan on a music scholarship. He wasted no time and came to Bombay in 1978. But success did not come instantly. Only after years of study and several unnoticed recordings did he hit gold with his vocals for Aamir Khan in 1988's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Fans marvel at his versatility, but his trademark is his"golden smile," so called because, during upbeat songs, one seems to actually *hear* the smile on his lips.

While he was still training in classical music Udit had also started doing the mandatory rounds of music director’s offices. Like all aspiring singers he too had to face the bitter disappointment of false promises from the music directors who kept saying that they were impressed by his voice. However it was Rajesh Roshan who gave him his first break for the film Unees Bees in 1980 starring Rakesh Roshan and Mithun Chakraborty. Even after he sang for Unees Bees nothing clicked for him as the film flopped and the struggling period continued. For over a decade he had to work very hard and nothing seemed to work for him.

In 1988 came Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and with songs like ‘Ae Mere Humsafar’, Akele Hain To Kya Gham Hai’ and of course the evergreen ‘Papa Kehte Hain’for which he won his first Film Fare award. Surprisingly the film had a totally new set up except for Producer Nasir Hussain and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. The film launched the careers of quite a few people. Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla the lead pair were one of them, composer duo Anand Milind another, director Mansoor Khan, female Playback singer Alka Yagnik who was languishing after Laawaris and of course Udit Narayan.

The musical success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak made Udit Narayan an overnight star. He was hailed as the ‘screen voice’ of Aamir Khan particularly after the songs of Dil and songs like ‘Pehla Nasha’ from Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar once again proved to be chartbusters. But Udit went on to sing hit songs in films starring other actors as well a case in point being Beta and Laadla starring Anil Kapoor which had songs like ‘Koyal Si Teri Boli’ and ‘Ladki Hai Kya’ respectively. Of course who can forget ‘Jaadu Teri Nazar’ and ‘Tu Mere Saamne  rendered for Shah Rukh Khan in Darr. He went on to sing other hit songs like ‘Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna’, ‘Ruk Ja O Dil Deewane’ and ‘Najaane Mere Dil Ko Kya Ho Gaya  for Shah Rukh Khan again in the mega musical blockbuster Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge. After the songs of Dil To Pagal Hai,Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and ‘ Ae Ajnabi’ from Dil Se he is now being hailed as the screen voice of Shah Rukh Khan. But he has also sung super hit songs for actors like Govinda, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar making him one of the few male playback singers to have sung for all the top actors.

He is married to Deepa Narayan Jha and has a son named Aditya Narayan. Udit Narayan lives with his family in Mumbai, India. During his career, he sung in more than 2600 Hindi films and in 15 indian language films like Hindi, Bengali, Assamess, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Gujarati, Marathi, Kannad, Telegu, Garwali, Manipuri, Haryanvi and Maithili. Udit Narayan also acted in two Nepali films : Kusumey Rumal and Peerati.

Some of his private albums are Bhajan Sangam ,Bhajan Vatika ,I love You ,Dil Deewana , Yeh Dosti ,Love is Life,Jhumka de Jhumka, ,Sona No Ghadulo , Dhuli Ganga , Ma Tarini, and many more… Udit Narayan has performed approximatively 1050 stage shows in India and abroad like U.S.A, Canada, West Indies, Far East, U.K, South Africa and many European countries.

Udit was kissed at 16, Aditya at 19!

Singer Udit Narayan was just 16 when he was kissed for the first time by a fan while son Aditya experienced it at 19 when a female fan planted a kiss on his cheek while he was hosting the singing competition Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

Having enjoyed the adulation himself, Udit isn't too perturbed about the unbridled attention his son is getting. As an artist, he feels it's a part of glamour world. "It's a new generation where hugging and kissing is a very normal expression of love and warmth. Moreover, Aditya has been brought up in a very cultured manner. I have full faith in him and he knows his limits."

Recollecting his own experiences, Udit says, "I was only 16 when I was kissed by a fan. I was also very good looking in my teens so wherever I used to go, I was given compliments and people used to get attracted towards me when they saw me singing. But we are from a very reserved family so I was very shy and always tried to avoid them."

"My wife Deepali was the first person I hugged without hesitating," the singer blushes.

Like every father, Udit also feels that his son should be more successful than him. "I am happy that he is doing much better than what I was when I was of his age. His future is very bright."

Aditya delivered his first hit with the song chhota bacha janke humko na samjhana re in Masoom and went on to sing many other songs which were appreciated. At present, he is hosting Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007.

What plans does Udit have for his son? "Aditya has full freedom to build his career the way he wants."

"I am always there to guide him," says the reassuring father.

Singer Udit Narayan was on Tuesday booked for allegedly assaulting a music director inside a recording studio in a north west suburb during a scuffle.

Vishnu Narayan registered a case with the Versova police station alleging that he was assaulted by Udit following a heated argument inside the studio in MHADA colony this evening, police said.

Vishnu, who composed music for lesser-known film Chand Ke Paar Chalo, had booked the studio for his new music album after confirming Udit's dates.

But the playback singer allegedly came late to the studio due to which the music director had to bear more expenses as hiring charges, police said.

They said the two got into a verbal argument after Udit showed up around 5 pm and a scuffle ensued.

Udit had not yet approached them with any complaint, police said.

Udit Narayan's son to make movie debut

Even as the media splashes news of Udit Narayan joining his father on the home medium to anchor a music-talent show, Aditya Narayan seems poised for a career as an actor. "I'm waiting for the right offer. If I get it I'll surely do it."

Aditya's father Udit also starred in a couple of Nepali film before he called it quits. While Zee TV has announced the 19-year old son of Udit Narayan as replacement for Shaan on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, young Aditya Narayan denies having taken a decision on the matter.

"Yes, I've been approached. But I haven't said yes as yet. I'm giving the matter a lot of thought. I may or may not do it finally," says the young man who has just done a three-month acting course in London.

"Acting is another option," says Aditya who as a child did pivotal roles in Jab Pyar Kissise Hota Hai and Pardes. "If I get good offers I'm open to acting. In the meanwhile my riyaaz is going on every day. Music and singing are in my genes. So I may end up dividing my time between acting and singing."

Udit gets notice for bigamy by women’s body
Tribune News Service

Patna, April 23

The Bihar Women's Commission has reportedly sent a notice to Bollywood singing sensation Udit Narayan today to depose before it within next fortnight after a case was registered against him yesterday on charges of "bigamy" as levelled by his first wife, Ranjana Narayan.

After 22 years, the first wife of Udit Narayan, Ranjana Narayan, had surfaced on Friday at a private hotel in the city, where the Bollywood singer had been staying with his present wife, Deepa Narayan, in connection with a marriage ceremony.

While Udit Narayan originally hails from Saharsa district of Bihar, Ranjana Narayan stays in the adjoining Supaul district.

After a high melodrama at the hotel for five hours on Friday, when his first wife made abortive bid to meet him and even staged a dharna in front of his room, the police had to escort Udit Narayan out of the hotel to board him on the flight to Mumbai.

Despite the claim by Udit Narayan and his wife Deepa Narayan that it was a case of "blackmail" against them to defame the reputation of the singer, the Bihar Women's Commission found "prima facie true" following the complaint by Ranjana Narayan who claimed to be Udit Narayan's first wife.

According to Ms Manju Prakash, the chairperson of the commission, the case was registered for breach of marriage solemnised in 1984 with Ranjana Narayan.

After interacting with Ranjana Narayan, Ms Manju Prakash was reportedly of the view that the bank passbooks, ration card and other circumstantial evidence suggested that the singer was married to her.

The commission now plans to legally contest the case.

In tears, Ranjana argued before the commission that Udit had betrayed her and married Deepa, a Nepalese national.

Dismissing Udit Narayan's accusation that a conspiracy was hatched by his rivals, Ranjana Narayan said she possessed all the photographs of the marriage solemnised at her house in Supaul.

On Friday, she had shown the photographs of her marriage with Udit Narayan to mediapersons.

Ranjana Narayan also met the state Chief Minister, Mr Nitish Kumar to seek justice for herself.

Ranjana's struggle pays off, Udit Narayan accepts her as wife

Patna, July. 28 (PTI): In a happy ending to a bitter spat, Bollywood singer Udit Narayan today accepted as his wife Ranjana Jha, whom he had earlier refused to acknowledge as his spouse.

Narayan today turned up before the Bihar Women's Commission along with his counsel Majid Memon and accepted Ranjana as his wife. Both Narayan and Ranjana signed a document in the presence of their lawyers and Commission Chairperson Manju Prakash, accepting each other as 'man and wife'.

Prakash said it was a "working arrangement" under which Deepa Narayan, Udit's another wife, and son's status will remain unchanged but Ranjana would also be accorded the status of the singer's wife. She said this agreement was reached with the consent of Ranjana.

Asked whether this arrangement was not against the Hindu Marraige Act which prohibits second marriage without divorcing the first wife, Prakash said "Narayan's two wives were living under the same arrangement for the past 20 years. There could have been no better solution to the problem at this moment".

Ranjana expressed happiness over the compromise and withdrew her complaint to the Commission. She had approached the Commission after Narayan refused to acknowledge her as wife on April 21 at a posh hotel here. She had blocked his way seeking restoration of her rightful place as a duly wedded wife.

Udit did it!

Chennai spent an evening with Udit Narayan. So did SUDHISH KAMATH and AKHILA SEETHARAMAN. Their report...

If you thought B to the A to the B to the A was the best rap ever, wait till you hear this one.

U-D-I-T. North, South, East, West. N for National, A for Award, R for Regularly, A for Aatey Rehtey, Y for Yours, A for Always, N for Narayan.

Taaliyaan, Chennaaaiye! (Duh? Clap, Chennai) Ramba Ramba Santhosham Vanthaacha? (Duh again? Are you very happy now?) What was that again? It's Taa-mil silly, as heard at the Udit Narayan show at Saarang, IIT (held in association with e-serve).

Never mind, the junta got the message.

So what if the anchor-comedian-entertainer-dancer-singer-poet Shakeel Ansari spoke non-stop Hindi. And to make it verse, Hinglish.

Chennaaaiye loved it. The `Taaliyaan' kept coming. And nothing could stop the 8,000-strong euphoric crowd from setting the Open Air Theatre ablaze.

Bollywood's "Number 1" singer made his entry a little late but in style — concealed behind multi-coloured peacock screens fitted on male dancers as he walked on to the stage saying: "Doston, Aaj College Ka Aakhri Din." `Papa Kehtey Hai' brought the house down and the crowd exploded as he went on to sing `Tu Hai Meri Kiran' and `Pehla Nasha' (with a little starting trouble).

"I consider myself lucky because in South India also they like Udit Narayan songs and voice. It is a big achievement for me. The credit goes to Tirupatiji er... Tirupati God and my well-wishers," the smiling singer said.

It was a colourful show all right with the guest singers Aparna, Nayan Rathore and Shalini enjoying themselves on stage and host Ansari's antics that had the crowd howling. Paisa vasool entertainment. "We paid for a light music concert. And got stand-up comedy free," said Dylan, seen with a bunch of revellers who spent their time making funny faces back at Ansari throughout the concert.

Udit did his bit too as he tried a step or two, part-Daler part-Rajesh Khanna style. And when he wasn't singing or dancing, he was combing his hair and touching up his make-up.

`Kathal Pisaasu' (with Shalini), in spite of Udit's flawed pronunciation was the highlight of the first half of the show. Thrilled by his attempt, the crowd cried out for Telugu. "I will sing Telugu song also. Please give five ten minutes," the unsuspecting singer said.

With the "body hilaane waala Universal superhit song Nikla Gaddi Leke," the frenzy reached new heights.

After the break, Udit post dress-change, obliged his fans with the Telugu number, `Ra Ma Chelukamma.' And suddenly, Chennai looked like Hyderabad.

Soon, it was time for the duets when Udit was joined by Deepa Narayan after Ansari came on to recite yet another verse: "Pyar bheed main hota hai. Pyar tanhayee main hota hai. Lekin sabse zyaada pyar Chenaaaiye main hota hai!" With `Kaho Na Pyaar Hai,' `Bole Chudiyaan' and `Mehndi Laga Ke Rakhna' for a finale, the crowd had had their fill of Udit. But the people who really stole the show from below Udit's nose were the "Joshilay" dancers who sweated it out right through with their energetic choreography. `Saare Jahaan Se Accha' blended with the National Anthem as huge sections of the crowd dispersed to avoid the traffic jam.

He ventured into Bollywood playback singing twenty years back with the young anthem ‘Papa Kehta Hai’ for the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ and since then it has been one incredible ride for the songster. We are hinting at Udit Narayan, who over the last two decades has managed to pile up quite an impressive number of hits to his credit.

Udit Narayan who mostly shone through the nineties with hits like ‘Pehla Nasha’, ‘Jadoo Teri Nazar’, ‘Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ and plenty of other hits to boast of is keeping low for sometime now owing to numerous personal controversies.

Nevertheless, Vishal-Shekhar is in no mood to let go of such a talented singer. After ensuring a chartbuster topper with the celebrity track ‘Deewagi Deewangi’ from the film ‘Om Shanti Om’ that shoved Udit Narayan back to limelight once again, the composer duo is making sure that Udit wins the numero uno slot once again. In fact, they had already roped Narayan for two dashing numbers for their forthcoming venture ‘Tashan’.

The tracks titled ‘Dil Dance Maare’ and ‘Falak Tak’ will get Narayan under two different grooves. While the first one is a brew of desi beats and rock music, the next will bring Narayan at his romantic best. With two different promising tracks in his kitty, Udit Narayan can surely look ahead to another rocking musical innings ahead.
