Re: Ustad Zakir Hussain -- ’WAH TAJ’

I don’t see myself winning Grammy: Ustad Zakir Hussain Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain has said that Grammy nominations for three Indians including himself is a proof that the world is recognising Indian art but the veteran is not too sure of himself grabbing a trophy. “Three Indian representations for Grammy nominations is incredible and something that has never happened before,” Mr. Zakir told PTI. But, he feels Ustad Amjad Ali Khan who has been nominated in the best traditional world music category for “Ancient Sounds” made in collaboration with Iraqi Oud Soloist Rahim Alhaj has a good chance of winning. “Even A. R. Rahman has a decent chance. But, I don’t see myself winning,” he said. Ustad Zakir Hussain has been nominated for the 52nd Grammy award in the Best Classical Crossover album category for the album ‘The Melody of Rhythm’. The album consists of artists like Leonard Slatkin, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer apart from Mr. Hussain. The Tabla icon said the album has an element of western classical, American folk music and Indian music. It is for the first time that an Indian musician has been nominated in this category. “I don’t see me winning because this category has three of the most popular albums in the western classical category and feature three greatest western classical musicians. We are the outsiders and it will be difficult to breach that aspect. However, it has been an incredible honour just to be nominated,” he said. “Awards for me are confirmation by colleagues and peers what you are doing is good and you have to go further,” he said. In 2009 also, Mr. Hussain had won the Grammy for the Contemporary World Music Album category for his collaborative album ‘Global Drum Project’ along with Mickey Hart, Sikiru Adepoju and Giovanni Hidalgo. Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Oscar-winning composer A. R. Rahman are the two other artistes from India to have bagged the nominations for Grammy awards, known as the Oscars of music industry. The 52nd Grammy awards will be presented on January 31, 2010 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

Re: Ustad Zakir Hussain -- ’WAH TAJ’
Music is not restricted to a few: Ustad Zakir Hussain Friday, January 29, 2010 Mumbai: Tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain has said that the media can do a yeoman service to Indian art and culture if they highlight the bench strength of Indian music rather than concentrating on individuals. "The tradition of our music is rich, and is not restricted to a few individuals. Our music is enjoying incredible popularity at present. But, this will go away if the next generation is not recognised," Zakir told PTI. He felt it is upto the media not to get caught with what's written on the marquee, but also see what is behind it. "Then they will realise the bench strength of Indian music," he said adding, musicians should be helped to get visibility. Zakir said among his contemporaries, there are about 10 to 12 tabla players, who were as good as him if not better. "Some of them are even better. But, I am in the public eye," he said. Zakir said when Pt Ravi Shankar was younger and became popular, people did not realise that there are other sitarists too who are good. Zakir said he played and practised for 25 years before being accepted as a top tabla player. "Classical music is not a one-hit wonder. You have to prove yourself for 15 to 20 years to emerge as a genius." "The young generation of tabla players are good, and they have the makings, but it is too early to say whether they will evolve into the geniuses of yesteryears. They have to prove themselves over a period of time," he said.

Re: Ustad Zakir Hussain -- ’WAH TAJ’
Hariharan, Zakir Hussain together after a decade!Diksha Kamra, TNN, 6 February 2010, | | Ustad Zakir Hussain |
My first performance in Delhi was in 1978, at the National Award Festival. Since then, it has always been a pleasure to perform in this city. I also feel a connection with Purana Qila – this will be my third concert there,” smiles Hariharan, who’s set to perform at 7pm today at Purana Qila, with tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, for the Delhi Festival 2010.
He recalls, “It’s been a decade since I performed with Zakir. The last time we played together was for Hazir. I’m certain that even this time, it’s going to be great.” Talking about Delhi’s audience, he says, “Audience ek hi hai. Wherever I go, I get the same reception.”
The singer feels that the concept of live concerts is growing in India. “People wish to see the singers right before their eyes and enjoy it to the maximum,” he explains. But are we lacking in terms of international standards, when it comes to concerts? He sounds positive, “We have the spirit, the enthusiasm and the energy. Only the technicalities are missing. But that’s okay. We’re getting there. We don’t need to worry.”
Having been in the music industry for the last three decades, he feels great as “people have accepted me as a musician who can sing all genres of music – ghazals, fusion, pop, etc, and entertain them.”
So how does the singer feel each time he performs live? “I pray to my gurus, my mother, and to the Almighty, saying, ‘These people have come to hear me. Help me excel in my performance.’”
He had once been asked why his name was Hariharan, and he’d replied that he had been told that if repeated thrice, it feels like one is echoing. “Goonj hi hai,” he recalls. And insists we echo his message to all, “Music is a great tranquiliser. Keep listening to music. .”

His nimble fingers cajole the dayan and bayan just like a deft lover teases his paramour, creating molten melodies in the aftermath, which transcend the boundaries of the physical terrain and gently glide towards divine ecstasy. But then, what else would you expect from Zakir Hussain, the greatest living legend of tabla, who has enraptured music aficionados for decades with his mind-blowing renditions. Yet, try addressing him as “Ustad ji” and he quickly rejoinders poker faced, “Who’s Ustad ji?” We get him talking on Bollywood, controversies and romance...
‘Rahman’s a complete package’
Has he congratulated AR Rahman on his double whammy at the Grammy’s? Zakir says, “Of course, I did! After the Oscars, it was expected. He has done India proud and now the west’s waking up to the importance of outstanding Indian artistes. Rahman’s a complete package!”
‘Gulzar’s Grammy will arrive’
Speaking of Grammy’s, what’s his take on Gulzar’s missing award? The Grammy award-winning tabla exponent says, “If Gulzar saab had gone to the US for the award ceremony, he would’ve received it along with Rahman. Since he didn’t, it will be sent to his place and the process may take a couple of months. It happened in my case too, so it’s not Rahman’s fault!”
“Beyonce has won all the six awards for one recording in different categories, so singers like her have more awards for much lesser body of work,” he explains, “Beyonce is a great entertainer, but it’s sad that an artiste like Amjad Ali Khan didn’t get the award.”
‘Bollywood? Yes, of course!’
Interestingly, the man who has been “brought up on Bollywood capers” hasn’t composed music for any Bollywood film till date. Ask him why this aversion and pat comes the reply, “No one gives me the chance! Jokes apart, due to my frequent travelling, I can’t devote much time to Hindi films. Smaller crossover films, which wrap up fast, suit me better.” And what about appearing on screen as an actor again? “If I’m offered a role to play Aamir’s or SRK’s dad, I will surely do it,” he laughs.
‘Wife makes me blush’
With Valentine’s Day approaching, the ustad is in a mushy mood. So, can he still make his wife Antonia blush? He smiles, “I hope so, but she surely makes me blush!”
