The Slumdog Millionaire team
The Golden Globes Winners

We will forever remember the 66th annual Golden Globes as the ceremony that pushed Indian cinema over the top, albeit indirectly.

British director Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, often called his 'Ode to Mumbai', swept the awards show, winning all four categories in which it was nominated (Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Director, Best Motion Picture -- Drama).

With Anil Kapoor, Freida Pinto and A R Rahman (whose work in Slumdog won Best Original Score), and Shah Rukh Khan introducing the film, it was really and truly an Indian affair.

Let's take a look at some of the big Globes winners.

Slumdog Millionaire was pit against a star-studded line-up -- Brad Pitt's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Kate Winslet-Leonardo DiCaprio's Revolutionary Road and Philip Seymour Hoffman's The Reader.

Yet, the underdog film about an underdog gameshow contestant managed to upstage them all.

British Director Danny Boyle -- who showed his penchant for grittiness in Trainspotting -- took the world into Mumbai's bustling slums, to tell us the story of one Jamal Malik and the love of his life, Latika.

Though pre-show buzz indicated that Slumdog Millionaire had a great chance at bringing home the trophy, it was almost impossible to believe that this independent film, without a major release, was going to top Titantic juggernauts Winslet and DiCaprio? It did. And all of India celebrated!

Bollywood lauds composer's Golden Globe win

A.R. Rahman delivers his acceptance speech after receiving the Golden Globe award

The whole of Bollywood, including the Bachchans, Gulzar and Javed Akhtar, have reacted with joy to A.R. Rahman winning the coveted Golden Globe awards for his musical score "Jai Ho" in "Slumdog Millionaire" and they feel this is just the beginning for many more international awards to come for the talented composer.

Aishwarya Rai: This is absolutely fantastic news. Superb in the superlative. Heartiest congratulations to Rahman. He's truly blessed. An incredible talent, a wonderful soul and has always been and will be the pride of our country.

Pritam Chakraborty: Wow! I was kind of expecting this. Congratulations to him. It's a proud moment for any Indian specially the music fraternity. I pray that it's just the beginning for him."

Amitabh Bachchan: Congratulations. A reward most deserving.

Abhishek Bachchan: What a glorious moment for him. He continues to make us proud. I'm very lucky to have worked with him in "Yuva", "Guru" and "Delhi-6". My congratulations to him.

Gulzar: It's the horse that has won the race. The one riding the horse was Rahman. My lyrics for "Jai Ho" were just the lagaam (rein) for the horse. Rahman has always been a clutter-breaker. He broke the antara-mukhda-antara (stanza-intro-stanza) mould in Hindi film songs. Now he has broken into the international arena. I'm working with him on the new Mani Ratnam project "Ravan". As always it's a pleasure. All I can say for Rahman is, "Jai ho".

Bappi Lahiri: It's a great honour for Bollywood. We're all proud of Rahman. God bless him.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra: I guess on the way to the Oscars he has picked up a Golden Globe. The best thing about his music in "Slumdog Millionaire" is that his work in the film is so revolutionary and potent, he made the jury's job easier. God bless Rahman for bringing India back on the cultural world-map. This will pave the way for bigger things from him and from our country.

Javed Akhtar: I'm thrilled, happy and proud, but not at all surprised. It's inevitable for a genius like Rahman to get international acclaim.

Shekhar Ravjiani: Rahman is a genius. The music of "Slumdog Millionaire" is outstanding. It deserves every award on this planet. I'm extremely happy for him.

Udit Narayan: I've had the pleasure of working with Rahman many times. In fact, I had sung for "Lagaan" that had his music. He's a fine human being and composer. I always say good things happen to good people. This honour that he has brought to the country proves it. Today when I have cut down on my singing, but he's one of the composers I'd want to sing for even if I would stop singing.

Ashutosh Gowariker: Rahman and I have worked together in "Lagaan" and "Swades". We're now doing "What's Your Raashee". In one word he is fantastic! He's a trailblazer. I'm so very proud of him and too thrilled. And his speech at the Golden Globe ceremony was superb, short, sweet and full of gratitude for his fans. Wow! I'll exhale only when I meet him.

Sunidhi Chauhan: When I heard Rahman saab had won a Golden Globe, it didn't register for a while. It took me time to understand what he has done. I'm too too happy to say anything. I haven't sung too many songs from him. Recently, I sang a Hindi song for him in an English-language film. Singing a Rahman composition is a privilege. I'm glad the West is realising his worth.

Shreya Ghosal:
I'm extremely happy and thrilled to hear this. It's a huge achievement. I'm very proud of Rahman sir. This is just the beginning for him.

Farhan Akhtar:
I'm very happy for him. The recognition is truly deserved. Congratulations to Rahman and Danny Boyle.

Vishal Bharadwaj:
Things just won't stop here for Rahman. The genius shall now bring an Oscar for us.

Bipasha Basu:
He's an absolute genius. He deserves every award. And the applause he's getting globally is richly deserved. I feel immense pride.

Anand Raj Anand: He deserves it. He's the only music director who got opportunities to work with big banners and super talented directors. I wish him many many more achievements.

Sameer Anjaan: It's a proud moment for every Indian. I'm lucky to have worked with him. He deserves much more.

Himesh Reshammiya:
He deserves it. He's my favourite.

Kunal Ganjawala: This is just the beginning of many more international awards to come for Rahman.

Thank You Rahman: You have done us proud

A couple of days before Pongal which also incidentally is the first year that we will be celebrating (by government order) Tamil New Year on the first of Thai, A.R. Rahman gave us the perfect reason to celebrate. The Mozart of Madras is no longer the Mozart to Madras alone. We knew that it would come, but were not sure when it would happen. International recognition in the form of a reputed award is perhaps the only thing that has eluded this prodigiously talented musician from our part of the world. He has done almost everything that a composer might want to, Indian movies in many languages, Broadway musicals, Hollywood epics, live concerts and much more, only official recognition remained. It has come and it is just one step below the biggest awards of all, the Oscars.

From a field that consisted of internationally reputed composers, two of who were former winners of many honors and one surprise entrant, the legendary actor, director and now also a composer Clint Eastwood, Rahman was picked. The honor is indeed great and it is also proof that music in true Indian style can actually be accepted and liked by an international jury. Slumdog Millionaire (if you have heard it) has music of an Indian sensibility, a style of music that we all are familiar with and can instantly fall in love with. In fact, a piece from Slumdog Millionaire has been compared to a more than decade old Hindi superhit. The ‘Jay Ho’ refrain is instantly inspirational in an Indian way and yet, it has managed to impress the Golden Globe jury and get the better of some world class competition.

Rahman’s journey has been special and we know all about it, no point going over it all over again. It is what lies ahead that interests. No one has ever doubted his abilities on the international stage having seen and heard his amazing body of work and we are also sure that this award will be a tonic for the man to enthrall us even more. Winning the Golden Globe was special, but what is more special is that he is the first Indian to do so. Few others would have been so worthy a representative of Indian art and music because few others have held the whole of the country in a thrall with their creations like Rahman has. Rahman maybe the first music director to break through the Kollywood-Bollywood barrier and become the unanimous favorite of India. In films and music, Indians’ favorites are dictated by regional and linguistic preferences. Only Rahman has managed to transcend all such preferences and that speaks a lot about his abilities and it is the same ability that has helped him enthrall an international audience while remaining true to the traditions of Indian music.

Rahman does not get easily excited, not even when he wins the Golden Globe. His acceptance speech was a studied list of thank yous to many people who mattered a lot, but the biggest of all was reserved to the billion people of India.

To Rahman we say, ‘Thank you, you have done all of us proud. This was the perfect Pongal gift. And, about the Oscars, well, we hope you do and we are sure about it too.

A.R Rahman

The Huffington Post
A.R. Rahman, From Bollywood To Hollywood
January 12, 2009

NEW DELHI -- Calling India's A.R. Rahman -- who won a Golden Globe award for the score of "Slumdog Millionaire" last night -- the best composer you've never heard of is beyond understatement.

Known locally as "the Mozart from Madras," Rahman has sold over 200 million albums worldwide: more than Madonna and Britney Spears combined.

But the truth of the matter is you probably can't hum one of his songs. That's about to change.

"There are a number of gifts that single [Rahman] out as special. His handling of rhythmical elements is astonishing and his solutions very South Indian," said Ken Hunt, one of the authors of the upcoming third edition of "The Rough Guide to World Music." "His melodies are catchy, clever and reveal a command of theatrical music techniques," Hunt adds. "He was pretty much ready for the big time from the get-go."

And now the big time is ready for him. With a multicultural soundtrack unlike anything he's ever done for Bollywood, the 43-year-old composer-singer-producer might be on his way to becoming America's hottest new hand on the mixing board. Indian-origin DJs in New York and London have been saying it for years, but now it just may be true. Brown is the new black.

As far as Indians are concerned, it's about time. Audiences here, where "Slumdog Millionaire" has not yet been released, have been overjoyed by the film's surprise victories at the Critics' Choice and Golden Globe awards. Here's one tribute:

Only three Indian films ever have been nominated for an Oscar in the foreign language category, "Mother India" (1957), "Salaam Bombay!" (1988) and "Lagaan" (2001). None took home the prize.

So even though "Slumdog" -- written by Simon Beaufoy and directed by Danny Boyle -- is not technically an Indian production, or even a Bollywood-style film, the accolades for Rahman have provided some validation for the larger-than-life musicals that Indians often simply call "our films."

Rahman, who started to learn the piano at the age of 4, is something of a Slumdog Millionaire himself. After his father died, he was forced to start work as a keyboard player to support his family at just 11 years old. He later dropped out of high school to pursue his music career. About that same time, he converted from Hinduism to Islam, a brave choice in a country where Muslims often face persecution. But he says Islam "set [him] free."

From his humble beginnings, Rahman swiftly became one of Bollywood's biggest money spinners -- a kind of Indian Quincy Jones -- virtually owning the industry for more than a decade. His hits, like Chaiya Chaiya, Chhoti Si Asha and Thee Thee, have as much enduring appeal as any Beatles standard, and not only for Bollywood fans. "A.R. Rahman is nothing short of a melodic genius," Andrew Lloyd Webber has said. "I admire his unique sense of harmony, his staggering rhythms and his melodies that take an unexpected twist that no Western composer would dream of."

Bollywood insiders know that kind of staggering genius can make or break a film in India. "In Indian cinema, the music is such an important part of it that music can save a mediocre film," says film critic Jai Arjun Singh. "With Rahman, it happens frequently."

That's not an overstatement. Marketers use song-and-dance numbers from movies for the trailers, videos on Channel V and MTV drive repeat business, and soundtrack sales and music video rights account for a significant part of the picture's revenue.

That's why Indian producers swear by him. "He has demonstrated fusion of west and east more than most musicians over the world," said Ronnie Screwvala, chief executive of UTV Motion Pictures, one of India's most successful film production companies. "All our tent pole [productions] have always been Rahman [films]--from Swades to Rang De Basanti to Jodha Akhbar and Delhi 6."

Nevertheless, though he performed with Michael Jackson and wrote the music for Webber's Broadway musical Bombay Dreams and the stage production of the Lord of the Rings, Rahman was virtually unknown to Western fans until last night.

Now he has to be considered a frontrunner for an Oscar, and a raft of offers from record companies and producers in the U.S. music industry.

Here comes the close up.
